Shannon Shaw and I go super deep on this week's episode as she talks to me about the tragic loss of her partner, Joe Haener, almost two years ago, just prior to their wedding date. This unimaginably horrible accident formed the basis of the new and absolutely wonderful Shannon and the Clams album, The Moon Is In The Wrong Place. This is a sad yet hopeful conversation about the power of music and performance to heal, the profound and enduring qualities of grief (and how to manage it), and the quixotic juxtaposition of Nature which shows us lessons we can all learn in order to truly value the brief but wonderful life we all have the opportunity to live. This is one of the most precious, touching, sad, and yet hopeful conversations I've had on Roadcase, and Shannon demonstrates strength, resolve, resilience, gratitude, and an enduring human spirit that can serve as an example for us all. And… the new album is truly an amazing GEM!! This is one for all-time, and I'm so incredibly honored to share it with you!!For more information on Roadcase: https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comOr contact Roadcase by email: info@roadcasepod.comRoadcase theme music: "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer

Playlist;(sintonía) FRANÇOISE HARDY “Comment te dire adieu” (1968)FRANÇOISE HARDY “Tout les garçons et les filles” (1962)FRANÇOISE HARDY y JACQUES DUTRONC “Puisque vous partez en voyage”FRANÇOISE HARDY e IGGY POP “I’ll be seeing you” (Clair obscur, 2000)FRANÇOISE HARDY “La maison où j'ai grandi” (1966)NICK LOWE “Sensitive man” (The old magic, 2011)NICK LOWE with LOS STRAITJACKETS “Went to a party” (adelanto del álbum “Indoor safari”)LES GREENE “Can you keep a secret” (single 2024)THE FUZILLIS “Greemie bread” (single 2024)THE PEAWEES “Banana tree” (adelanto álbum “One ride”)THE LOONS “Candlelight” (Memories have faces, 2024)THE DARTS “Are you down” (Boomerang, 2024)THE UNKNOWNS “Thinking about you” (East Coast low, 2023)HOOVERIII “Guillotine” (2018)SHANNON AND THE CLAMS “Dali’s clock” (The moon is in the wrong place, 2024)THE COURETTES feat LA LA BROOKS “Run run runaway” (single 2024)Escuchar audio

On this week's episode, I talk to Jon Muq, whose extraordinary tale is one of resilience, courage, fate, and his deep desire to simply “follow the sound.” Raised in Uganda and now living in Austin, Texas since 2018, when he disembarked from a months-long gig with Norwegian Cruises and found himself in the middle of the SXSW Festival, Jon is set to release his debut album, Flying Away, produced by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys on Dan's own Easy Eye Sound label. We talked all about growing up in a very challenging environment and the chance encounters that shaped Jon's musical experience in a place where he literally had to “sing for his supper.”I'm psyched to bring you this amazing conversation that will surely change your perspective of what is truly possible, and what it means to be destined to follow your true path — whatever it may be — and Jon is an amazing example of all that. The Oakland-based band Shannon and the Clams recently released their seventh album, 'The Moon Is In The Wrong Place.' The entire album touches on the loss of Shannon Shaw's finance Joe Haener who died in a car accident in August of 2022, about two and a half months before their wedding. Shaw talks about Haener's life, shares stories behind the tracks on the new record, and reflects on how she's been processing her grief.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/sound/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Shannon Shaw was on her way to check out an alternate venue for her upcoming wedding and then to her bachelorette party one August day in 2022 when she got word that Joe Haener, Shannon's fiancé, had been killed. His pickup had collided with another pickup and he died right outside the fields of his family farm. Shannon joins us to talk about the pain, the loss, the grief.and the joy of knowing and loving Joe in the first place. One of the ways she processed all this was to do what she does best: create music. Our good pal Anna Goldthorp joins us this week and takes us into a genre of music we have not yet covered with Shannon and the Clams' third album, Dreams in the Rat House. Hailing from Oakland, Shannon and the Clams are part of a rather deep, and popular, retro garage rock revival scene. They've been going since 2009 and have six albums in that time to critical acclaim. The band themselves are very well respected in this scene, and the boys had really great fun immersing themselves in an entire genre of music they'd never really explored before. A genre which is somewhere between 60s do-wop, RnB, garage rock, psychedelia and rockabilly. There's a lot to be said about this genre - and believe us, we do say a lot about it - but what's pretty clear is that when it comes to recreating that 1960s feel, Shannon and the Clams stand head and shoulders above their peers. The resulting conversation covers a lot of ground, which is why this episode is a bit of a bumper edition because when Anna is about, we can't help but have a good old chinwag. In this episode we talk about the death of the American dream, Elvis Presley, the allegations around Burger Records, beauty standards in music, David Lynch, punk rock melancholia and way more besides. So do come with us on the journey, and at the end voice your opinion as to whether you think Dreams in the Rat House is an unsung classic by voting in our poll below. Next week - MORE GUESTS!

Shannon Shaw of Shannon and the Clams didn't start playing bass and writing songs until she was 25. It's hard to believe listening to her songs today, but she was raised in a Jack Mormon household with limiting beliefs about what women and girls could and couldn't do that shaped her way of thinking early on. One night, feeling alone and desperate, a song came to her out of thin air. She picked up a bass, and her musical career started almost immediately after that. After her story, Shannon talks to Chelsea about her upcoming album The Year of the Spider and the growth she experienced in the last year. Shannon gave a shoutout to NAACPPDX, Punks with Lunch, Stroll PDX, and Basic Rights Oregon. Curated by Talkhouse intern Lauren McGrath, the episode sees Shannon Shaw of Shannon And The Clams and Hunx and his Punx chop it up with Happy Fits' singer/cellist Calvin Langman. Their revealing backstage convo takes in the time Shannon met Andre 3000; Calvin’s experience having his very first single blow up on Spotify; recording with The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach; and even Shannon's job working at a mental institution for the criminally insane. Check it out, and catch Shannon and The Clams on tour with the Black Keys through November: all dates @ http://shannonandtheclams.com/ This episode was recorded and co-produced by Mark Yoshizumi. 011 - Shannon and the ClamsIn episode 11 James speaks with Cody Blanchard (guitar and vocals), Nate Mahan (drummer and aspiring luthier) of Shannon and the Clams. Over the last decade, Shannon and her chief collaborator guitarist Cody Blanchard have released four albums of 60s-inspired pop on indie labels, toured tirelessly and have gradually solidified a lineup of devoted Bay Area musicians. In this current iteration, Shannon and the Clams, consisting of Shannon Shaw on bass and vocals, Cody Blanchard on guitar and vocals, Nate Mahan on drums, and Will Sprott on keyboards, have developed notoriety for lively and genuine stage performances and a zealous following that craves their particular authenticity and innovation on classic sounds. Their latest album Onion, produced by The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach at his Nashville studio, finds a finely tuned and tour-tested band stretching out from the 60s-inspired, surf inflected rock that has defined their previous releases, and delves into genres including soul and psychedelic pop. http://shannonandtheclams.com I also have a rare treat to speak with their tour manager Mary Claire Ginn who apart from tour manager duties also was the talent coordinator for the Hangout fest in Alabama. She has a lot of insight into the rigors of road and how the talent selection process works for the festival community. Please like, comment and most of all share this podcast with your friends. Bottlerock Festival 2019
Released in June, Shannon in Nashville finds the singer embarking on her own for the first time, after a half-dozen albums with backing band, The Clams. But Shannon Shaw still had plenty of support. The singer/bassist’s solo debut was produced by Black Key Dan Auerbach, who played on the album, alongside an all-star cast of Nashville studio musicians. But Shaw’s smoky vocals and dreamy songwriting are the stars of a record that is at once forward looking and firmly rooted in the past. The musician has come a long way since tentatively picking up an ex’s bass in college and honing her craft at karaoke bars and open mics. Shannon and the Clams have quickly become one of Oakland’s best and most fascinating musical ambassadors over the last decade.

Shannon And The Clams released their fifth album, "Onion," earlier this year. The Oakland quartet teamed up with producer Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys for the record, which features the retro rock and pop sound of the band's previous work. Singer Shannon Shaw's lyrics pay tribute to the victims of the 2016 fire at the Ghost Ship venue in the band's hometown. Shannon And The Clams stopped into the CPR Performance Studio before a pair of Colorado shows. The band members played three songs from "Onion" and spoke with Bruce Trujillo about writing about friends who had died in the Ghost Ship fire, playing the songs from "Onion" in Oakland for the first time and how Auerbach's support has affected their career.

Shannon Shaw almost catfished me, but I finally got to talk to her between recording the new Clams album and touring! She told me about the books that keep her worrying about serial killers, her love of illustration, metal smithing and girl bands including the Ronettes! She is a black eyeliner afficianado and likes a good beehive but isn't going 'full banana' on any one look. Her influences include girl groups, John Waters' heroines, Minnie Mouse and Daisy Duck, and her own basic aversion to looking too perfect. Please check out the band at www.shannonandtheclams.com and the podcast home at www.dresscodecracker.com Thanks Shannon and thanks everyone for listening!~
