The opening story of Eternal Summer of My Homeland (Epigram Book, 2023) the debut story collection from Singaporean author Agnes Chew, is about grief. Hui Shan loses her mother right before the birth of her first child–and gradually cuts her father out of her life after he refuses to do the traditional things one does to commemorate the death of a family member. Until she learns what her father has actually been doing: Growing a garden, illegally, on Singaporean government land. Agnes's stories are all about Singapore and its multiculturalism, tradition, and modernity. And, as she explains in today's interview, the collection is in fact Agnes's attempt to reconnect with the city, after moving away to Germany. Agnes Chew is also the author of The Desire for Elsewhere (Math Paper Press: 2016), a collection of travel essays. Her work has appeared in Granta, Necessary Fiction, and Wildness Journal, among others. She holds a Master's degree in international development from the London School of Economics; her prizewinning dissertation, which examines inequality and societal wellbeing in Singapore, was featured in the Singapore Policy Journal. Agnes can be followed on Instagram at @_agneschew. You can find more reviews, excerpts, interviews, and essays at The Asian Review of Books, including its review of Eternal Summer of My Homeland. The current upheaval in Afghanistan has left many local Afghan people scared for relatives they left behind. Many have been trying for months, even years, to help relatives leave Afghanistan, but the process is incredibly slow and difficult.Humanitarian Parole allows folks to enter the US, with opportunity to then apply to regularize their status through family adjustment, asylum, or other legal pathways. Unfortunately, it is extremely expensive, costing $575 PER PERSON per family– even infants. We are raising funds to be able to cover this tremendous cost for 25 families at our upcoming pro se Humanitarian Parole clinic.Thank you for your support of our local immigrant community!”DOWNLOAD RECORDINGsubscribe to the podcast here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/5432fun(intro by omar)Peach Kelli Pop “King Size” Gentle LeaderCool Maritime “Mossage” Sharing WavesFlasher “Pressure” Constant ImageEternal Summers “Oblivious” Every Day It Feels Like I’m Dying…Alex Macfarlane “Good With Little Numbers” Planetarium NightsFreezing Cold “Shape of Escape” Demo 2017Bike Crash “I Discovered South Philly” Surprise!Braids “Burdock & Dandelion” Collarbones / Burdock & DandelionHot Tang “Secret Beach” Mostly MallardsScrim “Avocado” ScrimCozy Slippers “Not Hard To Say Goodbye” Postcards EPJulian “Car” Real DistancePaperman “talkingtoolong” dialogue with a new motherPrinsess “Made It Better” FaithDusk “Done Nothin” DuskSediment Club “Hydraulic Saint” Stucco Thievesmothpuppy “Kilgore Falls” Cool & PrettyThe Shifters “Cope With A Half” Just Sat Down 7"MALL WALK “Out To Lunch” Rose B/W Out To LunchHana vu “Shallow” How Many Times Have You Driven By

On today’s show, we take a good look at the recent WHO evaluation of red and processed meats, which resulted in them being classified as carcinogens by the IARC. What exactly did they say? What do the classifications mean? Did the media get it right? What are the takeaways? All that, plus “Eternal Summer” in the Shinrin-yoku segment, “More than you think” in the Moment of Paleo, and compelling "Thoughts About Silence" in the After the Bell segment. On this week’s podcast, Apple music finally jumps into the streaming music pool, but is it too little too late? Does the hardware giant have what it takes to deliver a “revolutionary” product that will save the music industry, or is this just a warmed over Beats destined to go the way of the Ping. PLUS! Kevin and Patrick talk bad practices in music journalism (we’re looking at you Pitchfork), unleash a new track from Dale Watson, and review the latest album from dream-punkers Eternal Summers. It’s all high speculation and old-school vibes on Episode 120 of ChunkyGlasses: The Podcast! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Will, Barrett and Chris discuss new music by Hop Along, Hot Chip, and Eternal Summers, plus a Pitchfork review controversy and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

A Way with Words — language, linguistics, and callers from all over
This week on "A Way with Words": Some of us can't go anywhere without a book or something to read. And one fast food joint hears you: Chipotle is now printing the work of famous writers on their paper cups. Speaking of fast food, saying that someone is “two plums short of a Happy Meal” is one way to joke that they're not quite up to snuff. Plus, every first grader plays that little flute known as a "recorder"—but haven't you always wondered why it's called that? Plus, a word quiz for the summertime, South Carolina lingo, flout vs. flaunt, silent B's, a rare word for worry in the wee hours, and a big congrats to the Class of 2K14!FULL DETAILSYou haven't played in the mud until you've done it in South Carolina, where a particularly fine, silty mud is called pluff. In the 1930's, the catch phrase Now you're cooking with gas, meaning "you're on the right track," was heard on popular radio shows at the behest of the natural gas industry, as part of a quiet marketing push for gas-powered stoves. If you can make neither moss nor sand of something, then if you can't make sense of it. This phrase is particularly common in Northern England. If someone is two plums short of a Happy Meal—or more commonly, two french fries short of a Happy Meal—they're they're not playing with a full deck. In fact, such good-natured teases are sometimes called fulldeckisms. The class of 2014 is totally hooked into the future, which is why they're writing Class of 2K14 in their Snapchats. Our Quiz Master John Chaneski has a seasonally appropriate game based on the first concert he ever attended: The Beach Boys' "Eternal Summer."Count on the Germans to have a picturesque term for a pout: Schippchen, that face you make by sticking out your bottom lip, comes from a word that means "little shovel."In South Carolina, if someone offers you a broadus or something for broadus, say "Yes, please!" It's a little extra something a store clerk might give to a customer. As we discussed in an earlier episode, this kind of "gift thrown in for good measure," is often called a lagniappe.A kludge, or kludge, is "an inelegant workaround" or "a quick-and-dirty solution." This term comes from the world of computing. Joggling boards are no ordinary benches — they bounce, and you find them mostly in South Carolina. Hours of fun for the whole family! The word climb has been sneaking by with that silent b for a while. But speakers of Old English pronounced the b in its predecessor, climban.Dayclean, meaning "daybreak" or "dawn," is common among speakers of Gullah in South Carolina and Georgia. If you suffer from abibliophobia, or a fear of not having something to read at all times, then Chipotle is the fast-food burrito joint for you. Thanks to a suggestion from writer Jonathan Safran Foer, prose by the likes of Toni Morrison, Sarah Silverman, George Saunders, and Michael Lewis is now printed on their cups and bags, and some of it's pretty good.Rare word fans: uhtceare, from Old English words that mean "dawn" and "care," is a fancy term for those worries you fret over in the wee hours. Next time you find yourself lying awake at night worrying, try reading the melancholy 10th-century poem "The Wife's Lament," which contains a poignant use of uhtceare. That little instrument we all played in first grade is called a recorder because in the 15th century, the word record also meant "to practice a tune," and was often applied to birds.A listener from Bozeman, Montana, wonders: Is it lame to add the letters th to the end of adjectives to make new nouns like lameth? To spit someone a big is to do someone a favor. Try that one out on your boss! The word flout, originally meaning "to show contempt," pops up in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Here's a hint to help you remember the difference between flout and flaunt: You can flaunt your bikini body on the beach, but if you do so in church, you'll flout the rules. This episode was hosted by Martha Barnette and Grant Barrett.....Support for A Way with Words comes from The Ken Blanchard Companies, celebrating 35 years of making a leadership difference with Situational Leadership II, the leadership model designed to boost effectiveness, impact, and employee engagement. Free Energy feed your ears with twin guitars (also known as guitarmony) and rock writer Stephen Davis shares one of the most meaningful songs to him. We press synth legend Gary Numan about a certain lyric to a classic song of his, and we formally introduce you to Eternal Summers, Oberhofer and Brian Bonz. We also challenge you to guess who's giving thanks in the MMMPod medley! If you can see the image associated with this episode, that's Bonz thinking about Free Energy, Oberhofer rocking out below Eternal Summers, who are watched over by a trio of Gary Numans, and Stephen Davis chats about the Lizard King.
