The switch to boxers, a LimeWire situation, and doctor money. Fredrick James Mullis Jr. (Early James) EARLY JAMES- MEDIUM RAW ["WELL DONE" STANDARD VINYL]: https://easyeyesound.com/collections/early-james "Early James recorded his first two Easy Eye Sound albums, Singing For My Supper (2020) and Strange Time To Be Alive (2022), at the studio inside the vaunted label's Nashville headquarters. But for James' third release, Medium Raw, producer and Easy Eye Sound label head Dan Auerbach envisioned something quite different for the Alabama-bred singer-songwriter-guitarist's rawboned, sometimes scarifying music. “Day of the first session, I had my GPS routed to Easy Eye,” James recalls. “We ran into some traffic, and I texted [engineer M.] Allen [Parker] — ‘Hey man, sorry, we're gonna be about 15 minutes late.' And he said, ‘It's OK, we're still getting set up at the house.' And I was like, ‘What house?' "We're recording at this house, it's really cool.' It was news to me! It felt unusual in the moment, which I think makes you play the songs differently. But I'm really happy with and proud of the results.”" Excerpt from https://easyeyesound.com/collections/early-james?filter.p.product_type=Vinyl Early James: Bandcamp: https://earlyjamesandthelatest.bandcamp.com Instagram: @earlyjamesandthelatest Website: https://www.earlyjames.com Records: https://easyeyesound.com/collections/early-james Merch: https://earlyjames.creator-spring.com The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSn17dSz8kST_j_EH00O4MQ/videos
On this week's episode, I talk to Jon Muq, whose extraordinary tale is one of resilience, courage, fate, and his deep desire to simply “follow the sound.” Raised in Uganda and now living in Austin, Texas since 2018, when he disembarked from a months-long gig with Norwegian Cruises and found himself in the middle of the SXSW Festival, Jon is set to release his debut album, Flying Away, produced by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys on Dan's own Easy Eye Sound label. We talked all about growing up in a very challenging environment and the chance encounters that shaped Jon's musical experience in a place where he literally had to “sing for his supper.”I'm psyched to bring you this amazing conversation that will surely change your perspective of what is truly possible, and what it means to be destined to follow your true path — whatever it may be — and Jon is an amazing example of all that. It appears 007 is about to come with a trigger warning. At a new season of classic movies at the British Film Insititute in London, all Bond films have the following warning - “Please note that many of these films contain language, images or other content that reflect views prevalent in its time, but will cause offence today.” John Fardy, Presenter of Screentime on Newstalk

Welcome to Roadcase!! We're totally psyched to have Early James on the show for this Episode no. 170! On the heels of his latest album, Strange Time To Be Alive, released last August, James embarked on his first headlining tour last Fall, and has not looked back. Once again produced by Dan Auerbach, who also produced James' first album, Singing for My Supper, James expands on his Americana and Blues roots with a smooth and poetic manner that combines folk-oriented hooks with cutting insight into today's crazy world. James knew he wanted to perform from an early age, and began to sing for strangers -- anyone who would listen -- as early as six years old! This amazing and unique artist comes by his expression in the most wholesome and organic way possible -- touring constantly and playing shows is his vibe. James loves to turn people on to his music and is grateful to be able to bring joy into others' lives. This type of honesty and forthright desire to make the world a better place is unique among performers and a part of who he is as an artist and a human. So hop on the Roadcase bus for this amazing interview and learn more about the one and only Early James. It's gonna be a great ride!!For more info:https://www.earlyjames.com/For more information on Roadcase: https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comContact: info@roadcasepod.comTheme music: "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer
Welcome to the first Podcast of 2023. Two guests - From the Gulf Islands of BC The Family Curse and from the US deep south Early James. You may not have heard of A Family Curse but you've certainly heard of the Family Father – Neil Osborne. Founder, singer, songwriter, and vocalist for 54.40. He's joined by his daughter Kandle. I love the fact that they imply that their music is “found material”. That's where some of the best music lives. Kandle has been making music and finding herself in Montreal but at heart, Kandle and Neil are west coast islanders. Check out their self-titled album and crazy videos. FYI – 54.40 play The Grand Prairie North Winter Festival next Saturday, Jan 14th March 3 at Midway in Edmonton March 4 Deerfoot Inn in Calgary The second guest is Early James from Birmingham, Alabama. Early got a guitar in his hands at a very young age and started writing songs and gigging with friends. He came to the attention of Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys, who offered to produce his first album What a strange time to be alive! His songs are strong but his voice is very unique. Like a young/old Tom Waits. I just looked at his tour dates…he's crazy busy All over Europe, then Australia, and mid-year everywhere in the USA. Please welcome Early James to the Mulligan Stew Podcast NEXT WEEK – Doug and the Slugs Documentary

We recorded this episode in person at AmericanaFest in Nashville. Early James released “Strange Time to Be Alive”, his second album produced by Dan Auerbach at his Easy Eye Studios, earlier this year. We hear about the process of working with Dan and his band of legendary musicians as they interpret James' songs, working with Sierra Ferrell on their duet “Real Low Down Lonesome”, how he developed his unique singing voice because he did not like or trust the sound of his “church voice”, and how his songs are like Japanese video games.

Episode 220: Early James pushed himself to find a singing voice and songwriting style all his own, and it certainly got the attention of Nashville's Dan Auerbach. The Birmingham, AL artist was invited into Dan's Easy Eye Sound studio to write and produce his debut album Singing For My Supper in 2020. That release was acclaimed by stymied by the pandemic. Not so the new one, Strange Time To Be Alive, with its surreal, suggestive language and fevered country noir soundscape. I sit with the 29-year-old James in the same room where he cut these two special and unique recordings and talk about Alabama, stage fright and Howlin' Wolf.

You can hear the signature production values that Dan Auerbach sprinkles over Alabama native son Early James' work on his forthcoming album “Strange Time To Be Alive,” due Aug. 19. But when you listen to the lyrics, it's all James. “Harder To Blame” tackles how we take responsibility for ourselves as we mature.

Here's a little old-time sounding ditty from our Americana jamming friends Early James called “Tumbleweed,” produced by Black Keys' madman and producer Dan Auerbach.
It's been noted that Trump's Big Lie and the violence it produced is reminiscent of the Lost Cause of the Confederacy — a potent narrative of grievance after the Civil War recasting the South's stand as heroic and patriotic. Undergirded by racism, the Lost Cause apologia would stymie Reconstruction, justify decades of lynching and throughout the South, and prove as impossible to uproot as Kudzu. When it comes to art identified with the Lost Cause of the Confederacy, “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” by The Band may be pop culture's most celebrated, and misunderstood, contribution. Despite its charged subject matter, the song is rock-and-roll canon, listed as one of the best of all time by Time Magazine and Rolling Stone. On paper, its lyrics read as if lifted from the Lost Cause playbook: a nostalgic retelling of the end of the Civil War history seen through the eyes of a downtrodden Southern farmer, laden with grief but not a trace of white supremacy. But the song is not what it seems, or what it seemed when it was first loosed upon the world. The Band's lead guitarist Robbie Robertson, a Canadian, hadn't logged much time in the South when he penned “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” in 1969. But in the ensuing decades, some have claimed it as a Neo-Confederate anthem. This uncomfortable fact led Early James, a songwriter from Alabama, to alter the lyrics when he performed the song at an annual The Band tribute concert last summer. Inspired by last summer's racial reckoning, James sang about toppling Confederate monuments. According to Jack Hamilton, Slate pop critic and author of Just Around Midnight: Rock and Roll and the Racial Imagination, the meaning behind the song is both more and less complex than many fans know.

Michael Beller is a podcast producer, host and writer for The Athletic, and along with Derek VanRiper and me, he is the co-host of The Athletic's Fantasy Baseball in 15 podcast. Off air, Michael has talked to me a lot about The Band, so it was high time for us to have a longer conversation about one of his favorite musical acts. This episode focuses on the Band's self-titled second album, also known as The Brown Album. The first few minutes of this episode features birds. It's not a tribute to the great album by Quasi; it's just that there were a lot of really loud birds outside my window when I was recording. In this episode, I made a reference to a cover of The Band's The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down by Early James and The Marcus King Band, in which James changed the lyrics in order to clearly reflect a rejection of the Confederacy. I put a brief clip from a performance of this version in the episode. James Mullis followed his sister’s lead: he got out of the small town in which he was born and raised - Luverne, Alabama - where his music was not really accepted. Once reestablished in the big city (of Birmingham, Alabama), he was quickly joined by upright bassist Adrian Marmolejo: a jovial, rollicking instrumentalist who tracked James down after hearing him interviewed by Esther Ciammachilli on Birmingham Public Radio. The duo - called Early James and the Latest - sits with Ferrill and Abe to tell their whole story, LIVE, at The Listening Room in Downtown Mobile.
