Joining us today is the directing great Neil Marshall (Dog Soildiers, The Decent) and the inspiring actress and producer Liz Farahadi to talk about SHORT film making, the things that can go wrong, why they are important, why planning is vital and how you always need to be ready to adapt. AND their short film Keep Young and Beautiful. We also talk applying for film festivals, why you might or might got get selected, producing short films, what goes into them and the difference between shorts and features for directors. Neil burst onto the scene and punched us all in the face with the cult werewolf action-horror classic "Dog Soldiers" and then, he plunged us into true claustrophobic terror with "The Descent" a film that won critical acclaim and cemented his status as a master of modern horror. He then unleashed the post-apocalyptic action mayhem of "Doomsday" and the brutal historical epic "Centurion,". More recently, he directed the period horror "The Reckoning" and the creature feature "The Lair." And it's not just features! He's brought his distinctive, cinematic vision to some of the biggest TV shows out there, directing two of the most epic battle episodes in "Game of Thrones" history – "Blackwater" and "The Watchers on the Wall" – which earned him an Emmy nomination. He's also helmed episodes of "Black Sails," "Constantine," "Hannibal," "Westworld," and "Lost in Space. And also joining us today, we have an incredible talent in Liz Farahadi, who truly embodies the spirit of independent filmmaking: an accomplished actress and a dedicated producer who champions diverse voices and impactful stories. You might know her from her acting roles in compelling independent films like "Losing Grace" (where she also served as a producer) and "Wild Bones," as well as various theatre productions and commercials. She's also had roles in the well-loved British soaps, "EastEnders" and "Coronation Street," along with other dramas like "Two Thousand Acres of Sky," "Miss Marple," and "Doctor Who. She's a passionate advocate for filmmakers, recognizing the need for support, especially for those from marginalized backgrounds. This drive led her to found and direct The Soho London Independent Film Festival (SohoLIFF), a fantastic platform dedicated to creating opportunities and celebrating films with social and environmental impact. She's currently in post-production on new short films like "Losing Grace" and "Daughter," and developing features like "Xenos" and "Polly." Her latest film as an actress and producer, "Keep Young & Beautiful," delves into the darker world of beauty standards with a powerful and humorous edge. This week, we're diving into the current season of Love Island—but not just for the drama. We're unpacking how the villa has become a mirror for modern dating: no one wants to commit, everyone's playing it cool, and real emotional connection is treated like a red flag. Enter Amaya—the rare contestant who actually feels things and isn't afraid to show it. We're talking about what it means to love loudly in a world that rewards detachment, why vulnerability feels radical, and how girls who care “too much” are actually the ones getting it right.---Stream Hannah's album, PHASES!Watch Emily's Short Film, All We Were!Emily's TikTok ShopEmily's Substack: third martini thoughts---Emily's Captivation: F1Hannah's Captivation: The BearShop CLEARSTEM and 15% off with the code GALSGUIDE at checkout---Welcome to The Gal's Guide — a weekly dating and lifestyle podcast created to empower radical self-love and bold relationships. Investing in yourself is the ultimate career hack. When you believe in your vision enough to create something - even on the side, even without guaranteed success - you open doors that might never have existed. Joseph Kosinski didn't wait for permission; he made a CGI short in his apartment, submitted it to festivals, and that single act of creative courage launched his entire career. His journey proves that investing in YOURSELF, developing your unique POINT OF VIEW, and then putting your work out into the world can transform everything. Don't just dream about your creative potential - invest in it, showcase it, and trust that your distinctive voice will find its audience. Daniel Bibby's short film Half Past Midnight follows two strangers - Harper (Miah Madden) and Marcus (Mitchell Bourke) - who meet in a cinema and decide to head out for drinks after the screening. In the bar, their relationship is revealed to be something more, something where romance once flourished, a romance that is now withering, yet for both Harper and Marcus, it feels as if it's still in reach. There's a tenderness to Half Past Midnight, one that underpins the films understanding of two adults growing to realise that the person they thought was 'the one' is not exactly that anymore. It's written by Daniel Bibby and Kelly Holden, and comes from Daniel's own experiences with a partner he had when he was living in the UK.This episode features two conversations; the first is an extensive dive into Daniel's work, his influences, what it was like working with producer Luisa Martiri, and how he navigated the deeply personal narrative and worked his way alongside Kelly to bring it to life on screen. The second conversation is with Miah and Mitchell, two friends who have known each other for a long time, but work together for the first time on this film. Half Past Midnight is beautifully shot by Julian Panetta, with their camera lingering and observing with tracking shots and close ups that feel, at times, almost too personal. Their camerawork is complemented by Adrian Diery's score, a score that gives a grand sense to the relationship between Marcus and Harper.Half Past Midnight will be screening at the Vision Splendid Film Festival, which kicks off in Winton, Queensland from 27 June to 5 July. There's a moment in Mel Brooks' “History of the World Part 1” where we're told that shortly after the first artists came the first art critics…..I'll leave you to determine what happens…. The music world is certainly not short of people with opinions in regards to others' ability to perform and provide nuance to the work they present for us as music lovers to listen to. In the classical world, interpretation of the canon of baroque, classical, romantic and modernist music can be a mystery to some of us who are not classically trained musicians. There's no shortage of classical soloists who've captured the wider public's imagination, yet have their critics as well. Welcome to episode 128 of See Hear Podcast. Glenn Gould is regarded as one of the great pianists of the 20th century, known in particular for his love of and heavy focus on the composition of J.S. Bach. However, he wasn't unanimously revered. Pianist Alfred Brendel was vocally not a fan. Even Leonard Bernstein who did love Gould's approach covered himself before a TV broadcast of a Brahms piano concerto by saying Gould's approach was not going to be for everybody. Therein lies the heart of the matter – when you depart from an accepted orthodox style of playing of the canon, you're going to upset people. Glenn Gould upset some people. BUT….the reason he is still being talked about was for what he DID, not what he didn't do. He's most famous for his first and last released recordings, Bach's Goldberg Variations (1955 and 1981). Even there his recordings are wildly different, and the latter upset some who championed the earlier recording. He's also remembered for his intellect and could discuss may other issues outside of music – something he did on radio and TV specials. In 1993, film director Francois Girard released a brilliant biopic / documentary called “Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould”. Like its subject, the film takes a wildly different approach from the accepted norm of musician biopic. As the name implies, the film comprises of 32 shorts featuring narratives, interviews, performance and experimentation that provide a strong sense of Gould's character. There is a 3 act structure, but not in the usual way that you get in a conventional musician biography. June 2025 sees the reissue of the film by Criterion, and I was thrilled to welcome Francois to the podcast to talk about this film and Gould in general. Unfortunately, we couldn't coordinate the timing to have Tim or Kerry available, but I still had a fascinating conversation with Francois that I hope you find illuminating. We're going to take a break from politics and the voices of older adults on today's podcast and talk with the younger generation that keeps us inspired.I was recently introduced to a compelling new voice in filmmaking, a bold young screenwriter and director whose creative vision and storytelling instincts mark him as one to watch. At this year's NYC Short Film Showcase at New Plaza Cinema, audiences were treated to a standout debut from the rising young screenwriter and director behind the sharply observed short film Thank You for Your Interest. With a confident voice and a keen eye for detail, Ethan explores the awkward, often absurd dance of job hunting in today's world—delivering a story that is as poignant as it is darkly funny. Front and center in the film is the talented young actress, a compelling new face whose performance is equal parts raw, relatable, and refreshingly real. Carmel brings the lead role to life with quiet power, capturing both the frustration and hope that define so many of life's transitional moments. A breakout performer whose screen presence is impossible to ignore, with nuance and depth far beyond her years, Carmel delivers a performance that anchors the film and lingers with the audience long after the credits roll. Together, Ethan and Carmel mark an exciting new chapter in independent film—two emerging artists with voices worth listening to and stories worth telling. Now, full disclosure — today's guests are very special to me, not just because they're incredibly talented, but because they also happen to be my grandchildren. So if I sound a little extra proud today… well, I am. I apologize in advance for any grandparental gushing.Thank you for supporting new talent — and for indulging me just a little.

ENTERTAINING SHORT FILMS is a new category on the RPA Network, which features indie short films for your enjoyment! We applaud these creators! Heresy. Millennia of enlightenment and expansion ended as the leaders of each faction hardened over their ideology of the civilizations. Henceforth, conflict reigned supreme. The two powers succumbed to their hubris and an age of war dawned. This struggle caused unspeakable horrors. Billions perished and the war forced both parties to morbid means. A war lasting over ten thousand years followed, and a divine entity drifted off into the cosmic void. With irrepressible will, he explored the grotesque dimensions of the cosmos and discovered secrets that would never have come to light. Under the watchful eye of Nyghil, Zephid decided to put an end to this madness with deception and to induce a new era."
ENTERTAINING SHORT FILMS is a new category on the RPA Network, which features indie short films for your enjoyment! We applaud these creators! A faint whisper echoes through the abandoned corridors of a forgotten planet. An effigy of the bygone days of wealth and splendour before decay and failure. Memories of infinite darkness, utterly out of the cosmos, yet parallel to the mundane spheres of the mortal. Lurking in the deep, a maze of time – a closed gate opened by the words of the unspoken abysmal evil. Blazing through the vastness of the universe, an Eldritch Sentinel summons the power of existence. A bearer of light and dark is gathering the forces to complete an endless cycle of recreation and the rise of a new eon.

We should start by warning you, this might have you rethinking things. In this episode, Matt and Garrett dive deep into a 15-minute short film called "Full Time" that completely shifted their perspective mid-recording. In fact, they had such a major epiphany about what this film was really saying that they scrapped their entire first recording and started over.Fair warning, they give away the entire film during their discussion. To get the full effect - which you want! - we recommend you watch it for yourself here, before you listen to the conversation. : https://vimeo.com/groups/storytellers/videos/903723252This isn't just about employee vs. entrepreneur - it goes much deeper. The film explores the hidden costs of staying in your comfort zone, the boxes we create for ourselves, and what happens when we trade our autonomy for the security of a paycheck. Whether you're building your own business or working for someone else, this conversation will challenge you to examine: Are you serving your mission, or just serving the system?Ready to question everything? Hit play and prepare for some uncomfortable truths about the real price of playing it safe
In Part 2 of our conversation with Lynnsey Robinson, we go deeper into the woo (and the why) — decoding what our dreams are really trying to tell us, how to approach tarot as a tool for self-reflection (not fortune-telling), and how to actually use affirmations so they don't feel like empty words. We talk about what it means when you keep having the same dream over and over again, how tarot can help you get unstuck, and why slapping “I am confident” on your mirror isn't enough if your subconscious isn't on board. Sarah got mixed up in a felony and for a second was going to take matters into her own hands and try to apprehend the bandit because she "loves justice." Thankfully she realized Ann Taylor Loft's Loss Prevention isn't worth fighting for. Scientists turned a spider web red, and while we want to be excited we can't figure out why we should care. We discuss our least favorite creatures and we realize Susie's hatred of stink bugs is the insect equivalent of Sarah's fear of things that scurry. We learn the connection between golf courses and a neurological disease. Sarah watched a short film about people who dress up in crane costumes and dance to help the species, and she loves it so much, but Susie can't get past the documentary's name. But the real magic happened at the end of the show when Susie found out the Cheers' actor George Wendt died, and we lose our minds about the crazy coincidence of her finding out today.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comRead this week's Newsletter: https://mailchi.mp/thebraincandypodcast/photograph-scandal-turning-point-how-to-be-happyConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodSponsors:For 20% off your order, head to https://www.harvesthosts.com and use code BRAINCANDYFor 15% off your order and a special gift, head to https://pacagen.com/braincandyCancel your unwanted subscriptions and reach your financial goals faster with Rocket Money. I remember sitting in the Mercury at the Adelaide Film Festival and watching Unspoken and getting to see a rare talent emerge on screen in the form of Kat Dominis. Her lead performance left me moved, shaken, and stunned by the depth of emotions she presented on screen. As the credits rolled, I saw she was the co-writer of this award-winning short film, a credit she shares with Mariana Rudan and director Damian Walshe-Howling. Unspoken is a story about family, it's a story about division, and it's a story built on intergenerational trauma.Kat plays Marina, a Croatian born young woman living with her family in 1979. She's in a secret relationship with a white Aussie man, with the two keeping the relationship hidden from her parents. Marina's brothers also live under the same house, with the two brothers falling into the political unrest that unfurls on the streets of Sydney in the form of protests and demonstrations. Acting as a thematic layer to Unspoken is the true story of the Croatian Six; six Croatian-Australian men who were sentenced to 15 years jail in 1981 for a conspiracy to bomb several sites in Sydney.Much of the evidence that was used in the trial of the Croatian Six was fabricated, with the men being set up as part of a sting operation by the Yugoslav foreign intelligence service. The weight of this event sits in the background of Unspoken, with tensions emerging throughout the film between family members, between Croatian-Australians and white Australians, and between girlfriend and boyfriend.Underpinning this tension is that stunning central performance from Kat Dominis who commands the screen with a guiding, lived-in understanding of the weight of her characters lives and the societal and political upheaval they're undergoing. As Marina, Kat presents the conflicted nature of wanting to fit in to a new culture while also trying to navigate the familial heritage of her homelands culture. In this regard, Unspoken becomes a universal story that many migrant families can relate to, especially from the frequently xenophobic landscape of Australian culture and society. These notions, and a lot more, are explored in this expansive interview with Kat Dominis, recorded ahead of Unspoken's screening at the St Kilda Film Festival on 7 June. Unspoken has screened nationally around Australia, and took home the Grand Prix at the Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival earlier this year, a rare achievement for an Australian film. Less prestigious, but notable still, is that Unspoken featured in my personal Best Australian Films of 2024 list. It marks the grand arrival of actor-turned-director Damian Walshe-Howling, of producer and co-writer Mariana Rudan, and of course, Kat Dominis as actor, co-writer, and producer. It's a stunning filmic achievement.Follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and Bluesky @thecurbau.
