In observance of International Holocaust Rememberance Day (Jan. 27) we're listening to and discussing Silent Tears: The Last Yiddish Tango, the acclaimed 2023 CD with new music and songs based on poetry and other writing by several women who are, or were, Holocaust survivors in Toronto. These songs recall their terrible and traumatic experiences during the Holocaust, including sexual abuse and torture. Some of the songs were collected and adapted by Dr. Paula David, a social worker, from a group of survivors in the Terrace Holocaust Survivors Group at the Baycrest Centre for Geriatric Care in Toronto who wrote poetry together to deal with their trauma. Others were adapted from the diary of Molly Applebaum, a Holocaust survivor in Toronto. The music, which is mostly new for this CD, is performed by Toronto's Payadora Tango Ensemble along with several soloists. Our guest to discuss Silent Tears is Vicky Ash-Shifris. She lives in Jerusalem and works as a Yiddish teacher and translator. She translated four of the songs on the CD into Yiddish. Matthew and James sit down with Tom Gillespie, long time Leonard resident.  Tom has lead an incredible life, from growing up in an orphanage to serving in Vietnam and on to being a Police Officer, Judge, and now Author. His two books "Silent Tears" and "Vietnam A Week in December 1969" explain what made Tom the way he is and the decisions he had to make.  Press Release:  One Week in December 1969, is a compelling read that appreciates a group of soldiers who served in the Vietnam War 1969. This book explains the event that took place in a matter of a week and was important enough to impact a certain timeline in history. Without these soldiers and their efforts, the world may not have been the same. These events have been sworn to secrecy, up until now. Tom Gillespie has finally been able to openly discuss all of the important events that took place during this time. He explains all of the precautions and the details that are necessary takes in this story. Tom Gillespie has been a law officer, a Constable, a judge, and the owner-operator of his own private security agency. In his book, you will learn more about his experience as a government contractor with a Top Secret Clearance. Tom Gillespie is not a famous person, but he should be. Few, if any, people in history have impacted world events on as large a scale as Tom Gillespie did in one week and gone completely unnoticed. Get copies of this particularly interesting read and enjoy a book that will help you realize how big the world is and how we remain unaware of the truth and sacrifices people make daily. Vietnam – One Week in December 1969 is out now on Amazon. About The Author Tom Gillespie is a noteworthy man who has lived with secrets no one was made aware of. He is not one to brag and certainly keeps himself busy. Vietnam is not his first book, and his previous release, “Silent Tears,” is his story about his childhood which is equally impressionable. He is a simple man who has stuck by his vows and lived a peculiarly secret life.

A love of history grew out of listening to her parents’ stories of growing up in an isolated region of the Smoky Mountains. She began writing in high school, an obsession that eventually led to a career in journalism with detours into engineering, law enforcement and teaching. In 2009, Smutz retired to work on publishing some of the sixty-plus manuscripts she had written over the years. Her first three books were non-fiction works on the American Civil War, a subject she knows well after more than forty years as a civil war researcher. Her first historical fiction, Silent Tears, is the story of an abused wife learning to stand on her own in a Victorian society that allowed women few rights. Her next book, as yet untitled, is about a young woman who becomes separated from her family when the American Civil War erupts. She takes on the guise of a boy and earns her way by spying while she tries to find her way home. “As unlikely as the story sounds, hundreds of women dressed as men and joined the army during the civil war,” Smutz points out. “Spies who were female weren’t at all uncommon.”Frequent travel is part of life for Smutz, thanks to her husband’s career as a federal law enforcement officer. Sustainable success lies at the intersection of your self, your health and then your wealth. And if you don’t master yourself then you can forget about the other two ‘ealths’. This is where today’s guest comes in. Lisa Bondarenko is an acclaimed counsellor, author, speaker and just an awesome human! Early on, she spent many years enjoying a successful corporate career in Human Resources, Marketing & Event Management. But like all of us, there was a moment in life that forced Lisa to take a step outside of safety and to jump into something new. So as a mature age student she walked away from her successful career to immerse herself at university for four years in all things “social science and counselling”. There she was able to solidify her lifetime love of human wiring and behaviour, with knowledge and understanding that has equipped her with a stronger and deeper framework. A framework that helps her to work with individuals, groups and organisations in health and wellbeing from a holistic mental, emotional and physical perspective.  Lisa now drives her successful business Eshé Counselling where she specialises in infertility, grief and loss, self-esteem and marriage and relationship counselling. In early 2014, she launched Adelaide’s first ever health retreat, Mind Heart Body - working with some of Adelaide’s leading experts in health and wellbeing. Lisa helps you to live consciously and proactively, as well as develop increased self-awareness, insight and skills to not only survive but thrive in today’s challenging world. She has also written a fantastic book called ‘Silent Tears’ – her personal account of the highs, lows and everything in between that is experienced by a growing number of families facing IVF and fertility crises.  It’s a story that has you laughing and crying at the same time. It’s a real life road map for surviving, overcoming and finding hope amidst pain and despair. Lisa is a proud wife, mumma bear, blogger, author, public speaker, budding musician with an awesome singing voice, a lover of fresh flowers and a talented power shopper! Lisa always tells it how it is with humble and side-splitting humour, so if you are looking for that catalyst for your courage then you’re really going to enjoy this great conversation with Lisa ‘Bondy’ Bondarenko.   Lisa's book recommendation: The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman Get Invested is the podcast dedicated to time poor professionals who want to work less and live more. Without stories there is silence. Without stories told, we are voiceless. Without our stories heard, we are invisible. The topic of violence against women with disability is only now entering the conversation on gender-based violence. Recognition that violence does happen to women with disabilities and that violence causes disability is the first step in creating environments of social and economic sustainability for all women who are impacted by violence. Their lived experience is multi-faceted and formed at the intersections of their identity, gender and culture, making gender based violence difficult to resolve unless a holistic approach is undertaken. In this panel discussion we hear directly from some of the women with disability who have experienced violence and look at an inclusive and holistic approach that recognises diversity.
