There are few living musicians as influential and wholly original as world-renowned recording artists, producers and DJs, The Avalanches..Their debut album 'Since I Left You', released in 2000, laid the blueprint for the future of sample-based music in the 21st century. The band have performed main stage at some of the biggest festivals in the world. Big believers in the life-changing power of music, wherever they're playing and whatever they're spinning, The Avalanches' sets will always be joyous, raucous and celebratory affairs. This episode I chat with The Avalanches about their 3 incredible records - each album with a  distinct personality - and the evolution of the bands sound. We discussed the bands approach to finding and selecting samples, some of the challenging aspects of their production process and playing the upcoming Heaps Good festival over the new year period of 2024. Support the show

Episode 201 is a journey through some of the last 35 years in music through the medium of the sample, from the Amen break to famous sample-heavy albums to our own personal favourite sampled songs. We discuss how an obscure 1960s B-side became the most sampled song in history and helped birth genres like drum and bass and jungle. We explore the sample art of albums like DJ Shadow's Entroducing, Beastie Boys' Paul's Boutique, J Dilla's Donuts, Girl Talk's Night Ripper and The Avalanches' Since I Left You.And then Niall and Andrea share their favourite samples including but not limited to music from Steely Dan, Super Furry Animals, Kendrick Lamar, Kanye, Burial, Kate Bush, ABBA, James Blake, Skepta and a disco Beethoven true original. The track that kicked off the idea was Rory Sweeney and Emby's 'All My Life' which samples Kendrick's 'Backseat Freestyle'.Shout out to Tracklib on Youtube for some of the audio sample beds.Songs referenced on his episode, and their samples are listed here. Welcome to the episode with the hardest album to find! De La Soul's seminal 3 Feet High and Rising is, notoriously, not streaming given the legal mess of its remarkable amount of samples. Matt's fully in his bag here talking the construction of music and interrogating what music entails. We discuss the theoretical underpinnings of Assemblage as a concept and process, then talk the legacy and impact of 3 Feet High and Rising, the joyous muchness of The Avalanches' Since I Left You, and the radical franken-music of Amon Tobin's Foley Room.

Join Jesse and special guest Holly Boson (@fireh9lly) for our Halloween mega-special, where we examine the scariest thing anyone could imagine in the year 2000: a 28-year-old white guy with a bad case of sassmouth! Is Eminem, despite still being one of the most popular musicians in the world, still essentially a Dustbin artist? Should The Marshall Mathers LP actually have been an LP? If you want to hear a rich white guy with a massive platform complaining about being cancelled, is this still technically the best possible way you can do that? Is Eminem, in his heart of hearts, a "fun dad Resistance lib"? Join us as we come to no particularly conclusive answers to any of this over a long, long period of time. Content Warning: This is the clean version of the podcast — if Eminem has taught me anything, it's that that's the one you give away for free — so all cuss words have been replaced by audio elements from the Hanna-Barbara sound library, a bit I bitterly regretted committing to approximately two hours into the editing process. (Anyone who wants the uncensored version is welcome to venmo me $16.99 for a burned CD. Great for parties!) However, this is still The Marshall Mathers LP, so there will of course be discussions of violence, sexual assault, emotional abuse, clown rap, homophobia, and miscellaneous other unpleasantries. Critical/Commercial Stats: Then: • 2000 Album of the Year in LA Times, Rolling Stone, Face, Melody Maker, and Muzik • #3 in Spin, # 4 in the Village Voice Pazz & Jop poll, #5 in Uncut, #7 in NME, #8 in Select, #13 in Mojo • Grammy Nomination for Album of the Year, loses to Steely Dan's Two Against Nature. Wins Grammy for Best Rap Album, and Best Rap Solo Performance for "The Real Slim Shady" • #1 for eight weeks, ultimately sells 21 million copies worldwide Now: • Acclaimed Music has TMMLP at #3 for 2000 (Top 5: Kid A, Stankonia, TMMLP, Stories From The City, Since I Left You), #15 for the decade, and #192 all-time. • It also has "Stan" as the #5 song of 2000, “The Real Slim Shady” at #12, “The Way I Am” at #34, and non-single “Kim” at #57. • Eminem himself is the 104th ranked artist: rappers ahead of him are Outkast (#64), Public Enemy (#42), Jay-Z (#36), Kendrick Lamar (#32), and Kanye West (#13). • The biggest selling album act of the 00s, with sales of over 32 million. Has a current streak of nine consecutive albums debuting at #1. Late last year The Avalanches released their third album, We Will Always Love You. It’s the follow-up to 2016’s Wildflower, an album that almost defined the very idea of a troubled second record – it arrived 16 years after the band’s classic debut, Since I Left You, a period characterised by false starts, illness, and the departure of band members including Darren Seltmann. It was also a period in which co-founder Robbie Chater relapsed into the alcoholism that almost killed him in his early 20s. Now The Avalanches have returned triumphant with We Will Always Love You, which merges their sample-based approach to making music with contributions from an incredible list of guest artists. Robbie talks about it all – and the LP's incredible concept – in this interview.

We apologize for the delay in getting this week’s podcast up—we had some technical issues that couldn’t be resolved over the weekend because apparently some people don’t work on the weekend [glares in the general direction of Cast]. This is a lengthy one but we cover a lot of ground. We recorded in three parts, which is how we recommend listening: Part One (23:22): the Leonys DFA, reviewing the Barves series, the team’s unfortunate proclivity for injury, previewing the Yankees series (spoiler alert: John is Nostradamus) and discussing the Orioles series, and what makes last year’s Orioles so much like this year’s Mariners. Part Two (23:22 - 44:35): an interview with Casey Catherwood, in-game entertainment manager for the Tacoma Rainiers and overall delightful human. Casey talks about his love for Tacoma and his passion for record stores that lead to Hi-Voltage Night (which conveniently overlaps with LL Night at Cheney this year). He also gives us an insight into the twisted mind of The Inspector, and provides live updates on the ballpark wedding rehearsal he’s watching. Part Three: Questions! We talk September callups, Ben Gamel’s struggles, Mitch Haniger’s future, and HAHAHA NOPE LIES. This audio just doesn’t work at all and until Cast gets back to me [glares harder in general direction of Cast] this is just going to have to chill the heck out. But in the interest of getting this published before LL Night/Record Store Night at Cheney, I’m sending this out in the world now, with hopes we can eventually recover the audio with the questions later. Get your act together already, Cast. Music: "Love on Me," Galantis & Hook N Slink; "Since I Left You," the Avalanches; "Day I Die,” the Nationals Learn more about your ad choices. Bonus episode, in which Andrew, Carlo and William recording in the same room for the first time ever spend roughly a minute discussing The Avalanches’ Since I Left You, and then Universal Studios for the following hour. Rough, sleepy voices await you!
