Goncharov is a movie that needs no introduction. We all know it. We've all seen it. It's the greatest mafia film ever made. So what could Megan and Beth possibly have to say that hasn't been said a million times before? Why a whole lot about the showstopping performance of one four-year-old Timothy Omundson that's what! Uncredited for years, Megan and Beth stumbled upon this role completely by accident but who are we to pass up an opportunity to talk Gonch? So get packed because we're headed to Naples!Watch a trailer for Goncharov here! Music: Noah Smith, "Bandero" Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
This week, I'm recommending four movies that have some connection to Ireland, whether through folklore, setting, or just a certain Irish sensibility. There's a mix of fantasy, horror, family-friendly adventure, and romantic drama, so no matter what you're in the mood for, you might find something here to check out.The Secret of Roan Inish (1994) – A quiet, beautifully filmed story about a girl uncovering her family's past on a small Irish island. Directed by John Sayles, it weaves folklore into everyday life in a way that feels completely natural. The cinematography captures the beauty of the Irish coast, and the film has a slow, almost dreamlike quality. It's based on the book Secret of the Ron Mor Skerry, but Sayles changed the setting to Ireland and made it feel like an old story passed down through generations. If you like films that take their time and let you soak in the atmosphere, this is one to watch.Note: I am not sure why I cannot properly differentiate the syllables when I pronounce Roan Inish. I kept trying to say it with two syllables in a natural way, but when it did it blends. Not sure why.Leprechaun (1993) – A horror-comedy that leans into its absurd premise and I love it! Warwick Davis plays the title character, and his performance is a big part of what makes the movie memorable. The film was originally meant to be more of a straight horror movie, but as they shot it, they leaned into the campy humor. This was Jennifer Aniston's first film role, before Friends made her famous, and it's fun to see her in an early ‘90s horror setting. The movie spawned a long series of sequels so if you enjoy this kind of thing, there's a lot more to watch. The Luck of the Irish (2001) – A Disney Channel Original Movie that a lot of people remember from childhood. It follows a teenager who finds out he's part leprechaun, which leads to some strange changes in his life. Like a lot of early 2000s Disney Channel movies, it has a mix of comedy, adventure, and a little bit of sports. The villain, played by Timothy Omundson, gives an over-the-top performance that makes the movie more fun than it probably should be. If you grew up watching it, it's a nostalgic rewatch, and if you haven't seen it, it's an interesting look at the kind of family movies Disney was making at the time.Only the Lonely (1991) – A romantic dramedy starring John Candy in a more low-key role. In it, he plays a Chicago cop dealing with his overbearing mother, played by Maureen O'Hara, while trying to start a relationship with a shy funeral home worker, played by Ally Sheedy. O'Hara came out of retirement for this film, and she still had the same screen presence she had in movies like The Quiet Man. Chris Columbus directed this, right around the time he was making Home Alone, and you can see a similar mix of warmth and humor. It's an underrated John Candy performance, showing more depth than his usual comedic roles. If you like movies that balance comedy with a little drama, it's worth checking out. That's this week's recommendations. If you end up watching any of these, let me know what you think and remember someone will be back behind the counter next week with four more recommendations. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast!
Prophecy Radio episode #108 finally discusses Chalice of the Gods chapters 12-14, which we've been promising for a couple weeks now! We also do a deep dive into the brand-new, full-length Percy Jackson and the Olympians trailer. The show is almost a month out now, and we're getting more excited than ever! New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:09:46) We spend a good part of our intro talking about the fact that Goodreads removed the middle grade & children's, poetry, and graphic novels categories. Timothy Omundson wrote a beautiful message on Instagram about playing Hephaestus. Andrew Alvarez FINALLY confirmed he's playing Chris Rodriguez. We found out that the review embargo lifts on December 14. Liam gives us some pretty amazing stats about the Percy Jackson and the Olympians trailer. Okay, it's time to talk about the full-length Percy Jackson and the Olympians trailer. We cannot get over how much Azriel Dalman looks like a young Walker Scobell! Seaweed Brain Podcast mentioned how they went to NYCC and found out that Percy and Sally's relationship will be expanded for the show. There are a bunch of blink-and-you'll-miss-it flashes of footage before the title hits the screen. We're totally supposed to hate Nancy Bobofit, but we really love this actress. Gotta be careful about how trailers are cut because it could be misleading! Is that shot of Blackjack from the opening seven minutes of the show? We also see Chiron give Percy Riptide, which was another scene they got to see at NYCC 2023. Did you catch that quick flash of Cerberus jumping for the red ball in Percy's hand? What do you think of Luke's scar? It definitely looks like the minotaur comes down from the sky. Still laughing at the choice to make Poseidon's shirt so wrinkly. Did you notice that the top of Poseidon's throne looks like waves? We discuss what the thrones actually look like according to the book. Placing the master bolt down in from of the Empire State Building guard was SO exciting to see! Clarisse's spear is BADASS. Is that dark forest the underworld? If so, could what we thought was the oracle actually be something else? Could we possibly see Hestia? Percy's shirt is SO MUCH BRIGHTER than everyone else's. We're so glad this trailer gives us some more humorous moments. Is that hydra target a reference to the first movie!? Did you catch the demigod in a wheelchair? What lit up the tunnel of love ride? Annabeth is amazing, but we're not telling you anything you don't already know. Unlock your destiny. Unleash your power. Hold fast. Brave the storm. OUR HEARTS. That chimera looks terrifying! Chalice of the Gods discussion (00:45:39) This week, we're starting off with Chalice of the Gods chapter 12. We really love how much of a slice-of-life story this is. Percy was impressive, but not TOO impressive. The Mist really works wonders! We're kind of obsessed with Standard Olympian Beverage Number 5. Percy fills Ganymede in on the plan, and even though Ganymede is nervous, he's choosing to trust his elected demigod. Percy and Annabeth chat via Iris Message, and we love their relationship so much. But we still have a lot of questions about how they earn drachmas! Imagine being Annabeth's roommate lol. In Chalice of the Gods chapter 13, the trio meets up with Blanche. Grover is obsessed with Blanche. Karen is obsessed with Blanche. Everyone is obsessed with Blanche. We get a really specific description of Iris, and her eyes sound absolutely mesmerizing. Reptile guys and goth girls really go together, if you didn't already know. Is complete indifference the best way to get your godly parent's attention!? We discuss the favor that Annabeth now owes Blanche for introducing them to her mother. Next up is Chalice of the Gods chapter 14, in which Iris gives Percy a big stick! Imagine that, Iris is actually a good listener. And being a cupbearer is a thankless job. The goddess doesn't give information away for free, so they have a quest within a quest to accomplish. We also get an official deadline for Ganymede's quest, and it's pretty long compared to most of the others Percy's had to deal with over the years. Where is the River Elisson and how can they possibly find it!? Now the horned serpents and all the rainbows on the Chalice of the Gods UK cover make so much more sense. Feedback (01:13:15) Sean has another guess as to what could be in the box. Nicolaas may have fallen behind (it's okay!), but he was excited to jump into our discussion of all the recent Percy Jackson and the Olympians footage. And Ms. Bobbilicious also wrote in to tell us her idea for Rick's cameo—and we LOVE IT. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 109, in which we'll discuss Chalice of the Gods chapters 15-17! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Prophecy Radio episode #79 discusses our favorite references to Egyptian mythology in pop culture. We also catch up on all the latest Riordanverse news, including that Read Riordan article about Hypnos, which we'll see in The Sun and the Star. Lastly, we continue our journey through The Kane Chronicles with The Red Pyramid chapter 6—and finally get some answers! Remember, we're keeping this discussion spoiler-free! New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and updates (00:05:56) Have you played Immortals Fenyx Rising? Read Riordan reminds us about some minor Greek gods and goddesses we forgot existed. They also did a spotlight on Hypnos, who we'll meet in The Sun and the Star. There's not as much information in here as there was in the Amphithemus article, but Karen's looking out for all those Nyx references. There's apparently going to be a Lightning Thief tie-in edition. Plus another Camp Half-Blood Confidential? It's been one whole year since Walker has been cast, and it feels both like an eternity and no time at all. Did you catch the video of Timothy Omundson talking about being cast as Hephaestus in Percy Jackson and the Olympians? Because it's pretty great. Are you Team Kristen or Team Kristen's Brother? Egyptian mythology in pop culture (00:20:13) Kristen kicks us off with an Easter classic—The 10 Commandments. She explains what it's about and some of its shortcomings. Apparently there are a lot of drapes? It doesn't have mythology, per se, but there are a lot of cultural aspects to the film. Karen's gotta talk about The Mummy (1999), of course. This kicked off her interest in Egyptian mythology. The flashbacks to Ancient Egypt were probably not super accurate, but interesting, nonetheless. We don't talk about The Mummy 3. Or the Mummy reboot. Or The Scorpion King. Next up is Prince of Egypt, Kristen's second pick. This one is animated! It also contains a chariot race explaining why the Sphinx is missing a nose. Moon Knight is a much more recent property dealing in Egyptian mythology. Watching this show really got Karen excited about reading The Kane Chronicles. They also highlighted a lot of lesser known Egyptian deities. You can't talk about Egyptian mythology in pop culture without mentioning Indiana Jones! Specifically, The Lost Ark. They also have to find the last piece to the Staff of Ra! The Map Room at Tanis shows a lot of hieroglyphics and iconography. Have you ever heard of the book series Everworld by K.A. Applegate? Gods and monsters and heroes from different pantheons all exist in the same world! Egyptian mythology definitely existed, but Karen mostly remembers Hel from Realm of the Reaper. Next up is Night at the Museum, which actually did a lot of things right by Egyptian culture and mythology. Karen also learned something knew about SHAZAM and Black Adam. Do you have any other suggestions of books, movies, or TV that talk about Egyptian mythology? The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid (00:56:39) This week, we're reading The Red Pyramid chapter 6. Kristen totally called that sleeping without the headrest was a mistake. We got our first Prophecy Count of The Kane Chronicles! How many gods were released? How many are on the board right now? Is Bast the one that's weak and easily manipulated? Karen went down a rabbit hole about dreaming in black and white. Karen knows what it's like to wake up to a cat on her chest. What's up with Sadie and Carter's clothes? We really enjoyed the moment where Carter discussed why he dresses the way he does. Khufu's meal choices are interesting… What do we know about lapis lazuli, and will it be important? We are big fans of Philip of Macedonia. Will there be invisible pets in the future? We finally, FINALLY get some answers!! Are Egyptian gods still worshipped? Can you compare the supercharged relics to the Spoils of War from Percy Jackson? It's sad that Carter never knew the stakes when it came to his life on the road with his father. We finally know why Sadie and Carter were separated! The Duat is such an interesting concept, with such incredible imagery. Someone's totally gonna trick them into opening the door. Feedback (01:27:09) Seaweed Brain Podcast got us thinking about the future of Nico and Bianca. Remember to send us your unhinged The Sun and the Star theories! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 80, in which we'll talk about The 39 Clues: The Maze of Bones (the graphic novel) and chat with Ethan Young before discussing The Red Pyramid chapter 7. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Prophecy Radio episode #58 sees the hosts talking about food. Specifically, what kind of food represents each of the main Olympian gods (plus Hades)? In addition to this, the hosts discuss all the latest news in the Riordanverse, including the casting of Hades and Hephaestus for Percy Jackson and the Olympians, as well as reread and discuss Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 12. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:03:23) Read Riordan released another OTP timelines article, this time about Nico di Angelo and Will Solace. Then, we try to guess which gods said what in the Riordanverse. Did you do better than us?? You probably did. Let's talk about the November 11 blog post. What moments from The Lightning Thief do they need an underwater set for? The Underworld set is going to be AMAZING. It's so interesting to think which gods we're going to see this season and which have to wait. It has been confirmed and confirmed again: No actors from the Percy Jackson movies will appear in Percy Jackson and the Olympians on Disney+. It's so amazing to hear that the studio partners keep giving them excellent notes and that everything has been super collaborative. We got another update for Daughter of the Deep! How long do you think it'll be until that movie comes out? Make sure you've ordered The Sun and the Star by Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro. Hopefully we're able to go to an in-person tour stop for this book, but if not, maybe we can catch the virtual event. Okay, it's time for the November 18 blog post, which is all about new casting. First up is Jay Duplass as Hades. Do we know Jay from anything? One of our friends is definitely excited for this one! We've also got Timothy Omundson as Hephaestus! Is there a better, more prolific actor for this role?? We think not! Kristen makes a confession that SHOCKS Karen to the core. We do a lot of speculating about how Hephaestus' role could be expanded for the show. Divine recipes (00:40:41) It's almost Thanksgiving here in the United States, so let's talk about food! Despite the fact that Zeus' recipe inspired Karen to come up with this series, Kristen had the most trouble with him! We both definitely tried to incorporate weather somehow. How do you turn Hera's personality into a recipe?? We agreed it had to be something homemade and comforting. For Poseidon, is there really any choice other than seafood? Kristen went for freshness and Karen went for abundance, but both work really well! And no, there's no blue JELL-O with goldfish inside. Hades definitely demands some sort of MEAT. We both also incorporated fire in different ways. And maybe the Italian flag?? Athena was a little bit of a tricky one, but we both knew it HAD to involve olives or olive oil in some way. Plus, it had to be light and have enough substance to sustain you during battle! Kristen's pick for Ares was honestly the best recipe out of the entire list. We both knew it had to be meat, and it had to be violent. Kristen also describes Ares in the nicest way possible. Next up is Dionysus, and we go in two different directions for this one. Kristen was thinking parties, and Karen was thinking wine. How could you go wrong with either? Kristen knew she HAD to work oranges into her recipe for Apollo. Karen had a similar reasoning for going with her choice for Apollo as well. Artemis is next on our list, and Kristen had a really clever way of working one of her major symbols into her choice. Why did we both think Artemis was vegetarian?? She's the goddess of the HUNT. And yes, Karen found a way to incorporate mushrooms. Obviously. Hephaestus is such an interesting god to find a recipe for, and apparently Kristen had NO trouble with this one. That being said, we think of Hephaestus VERY differently. For Aphrodite, are there any options other than chocolate?? Callie interrupts us to eat a little bit of dinner. Whatever Aphrodite gets, it has to be elegant and decadent. Demeter is an interesting one, but Kristen found a really good recipe for that. Meanwhile, Karen went with something a little more classic. Hermes was another god who was really fun and interesting to come up with recipes for. Seriously, tacos are so versatile and they're good to eat on the go! Our last god on the list is Hestia, and we knew from the get-go it would be a little bit difficult. Whatever her meal is, it's gotta be roasted over an open fire! Was this fun? Did you like it? Should we do some more? Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (01:24:45) It's time to talk about The Last Olympian chapter 12. Is this the first time we're meeting Will Solace? He must be an excellent healer if Percy is allowing him to look after Annabeth. How much does Pompona look like Demeter? Watch out for that foreshadowing! It'll bite you right on the nose. We really wanted to root for you, Ethan! We're really feeling the Percabeth vibes in this chapter!! There was a point in time where Luke wanted to run away from Kronos and everything he had to do. How do we feel about this? Grover returns to deliver some bad news and eat some furniture. Karen totally forgets the word for hellhounds. We're officially up to Prophecy Count #27. Nico needs to learn the delicate art of listening to your elders. Did Maria di Angelo make the right call, or was she being naïve? Zeus would totally kill children. Poor Persephone would've been forced to live with Hades' mistress. YIKES. Hades goes full God of Death on the Oracle, and we just feel so bad for her. Rachel's father is kind of the worst. Kristen has ANOTHER confession. Feedback (02:00:40) Henry lets us know that there's a Mythic Quest/Percy Jackson crossover…in Becky's dreams. Phoebe tries to help us out with the whole sand dollar problem. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 59, where we'll do a Monster Guide on pit scorpions. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. This week on the Cinema Gold Show as we get closer to the end of our Psych review, we take a look at Psych 2, "Lassie Come Home." Psych: The Movie, when it was released in 2017, was clearly a love letter for the avid Psych-Os missing fake psychic Shawn Spencer (James Roday), his platonic life partner Burton Guster (Dulé Hill), and the rest of the Santa Barbara Police Department after the series wrapped in 2014. From a David Bowie-loving villain to a #TeamGrimmie T-shirt, it was the best kind of fan service. Psych 2: Lassie Come Home, then, is undoubtedly a love letter from the cast and crew of Psych to one of their own: actor Timothy Omundson and his grouchy yet heroic alter ego, detective Carlton Lassiter, both undergoing recovery for a stroke. This week we continue our series I Know You Know with a review of Psych The Movie. The first of three movies that came out of the success of USA Network's hit show Psych! Psych: The Movie is lively and lightweight, buoyed by Roday and Hill's bond, which hasn't diminished at all in the last three years. Its structure is classic Psych, with mystery assailants, a break-in or two, a little self-reflection, and rapid-fire pop culture references to make up for their absence. Roday has called the movie a “love letter” to the fans, and it is definitely an enjoyable continuation of the original series. Virtually all the main and recurring players, including Timothy Omundson, who's recovering from a stroke, are worked into the story, which centers on Juliet (Maggie Lawson). The San Francisco cop has been targeted by the Thin White Duke (Zachary Levi) and his goons, including WWE star Charlotte Flair. The antagonists threaten to spoil not just Christmas, but possibly even Shawn and Juliet's engagement, which remains jewelry-free. This dashing man is a magnificent actor, father, and husband who also happens to be a dear friend. Timothy Omundson's career spans decades. You know him from his brilliant roles on Psych, Galavant, and my favorite because it is where we met, Jericho, among so many others. Four years ago this April, at the height of his career, while promoting a film in Florida, Tim suffered a major stroke in the airport bathroom. In this episode, Tim speaks very candidly about his perseverance throughout his recovery, the love he has for his family and friends who supported him and his family, the gratitude he has daily, and how special it is to be back on TV on the NBC hit show This Is Us. Well... This Is Tim... For more information about stroke prevention and recovery please visit https://www.stroke.org/
Timothy Omundson (Psych) joins me this week and pours it all out about his heartbreaking experience with the freak accident stroke he suffered during the zenith of his career and the best shape of his life. Timothy opens up on making the conscious decision to stay strong and overcome this obstacle for the sake of his family and the desire to not let his wife down. We get into his positive state of mind throughout this experience, how his Psych family was there for him at his lowest, and how he’s able to stay grateful for being so awesome.
In search of inner peace, Gabrielle leads Xena to a mystical and exotic land of snake charmers, sword swallowers, and a rainfall of dismembered limbs! We've been dreading this arc for years, but, devi or not, it's finally time to talk about Xena's trip to India. In this episode, Chris and Ally admit to some of their own mistakes while also exploring the mistakes of Xena Warrior Princess, a show that existed in a time where people had different cultural biases. We're putting out a hot dad alert for Timothy Omundson, as well as a missing persons report for this show's sense of its own characters. So we couldn't wait to watch when we heard that the show would focus their second movie “Lassie Come Home” on the stroke recovery of one of its main characters, Lassiter, mirroring the real life stroke recovery of the actor of Timothy Omundson who plays Lassiter. Featuring old college pals Timothy Omundson and Richard Speight Jr. - separately, not together, unfortunately. We ain't that fancy. Also, we promise the title comes from one of our guests and does not reflect our own sentiments. Along with our main chat about creating Kings of Con and directing Supernatural, Rich draws back the curtain on the reality of conventions as a business and what makes a con guest succeed or flop, and also delves a little deeper about his character Gabriel and the canon of Supernatural's angels in general. Tim joined us at Oz Comic-Con 2016 where we discussed transferring Galavant from screen to stage, the entire messy world of television ratings, cancellations and planned series endings (Psych, Supernatural...) and the fact that his eagerness has caused a certain Hamilton cast member to take out some extra insurance against sabotage. For context, we've bracket these live-recorded interviews with our own discussion of the craft of interviewing at conventions and some of our best and worst personal experiences. You can skip to 17:08 for Richard's interview and 1:02:17 for Timothy's. The Richard Speight recording really showcases just how much great content gets lost when turning a lengthy interview into a short feature article and our as-yet-unreleased Timothy Omundson content is a great example of how non-time-sensitive interviews sometimes get put on the backburner and don't get the time in the sun they deserve. Each episode, our Not About The Weather hosts and their guests will bring an obsession to share and a grievance to air from the their experiences in the world of pop culture, fandom, or sometimes, just plain old life. #ANA - Ask NATW Anything: "What's your favorite kind of interview? Timothy Omundson (Supernatural's Cain, Psych's Carlton Lassiter) is our special guest for this podcast. Looking to reclaim his place as King of Hell, Crowley (Mark Sheppard) asks Dean (Jensen Ackles) for help finding “The First Blade,” the only blade that can kill Abbadon (guest star Alaina Huffman). Knowing he owes Crowley a favor for helping Sam (Jared Padalecki), and also wanting Abaddon dead himself, Dean reluctantly agrees and the two set off on a road trip. However, Dean and Crowley are completely unprepared when they find out who has the blade – Cain (guest star Omundson), the first son. Meanwhile, Sam is back at the bunker with Castiel (Misha Collins) who notices there is some leftover grace inside Sam. If they can extract it, they can use the grace to track Gadreel. The only problem is the procedure may do permanent damage to Sam. John Badham directed the episode written by Robbie Thompson (911).
