Ageless Athlete - Fireside Chats with Adventure Sports Icons
Steve McClure is one of Britain's most accomplished rock climbers, and at 54, still continuing to climb at an elite level, defying the notion that performance inevitably drops with age. We dive into his unconventional training philosophy, how he balances pushing his physical limits with enjoying family life (and even the occasional late-night party), and why he believes that loving the process of climbing is the best key to long-term success.About Steve McClureBritish Climbing Icon: Known for first ascents of some of the UK's hardest sport routes, including “Rainman” (Malham Cove).Lifetime of Experience: Began climbing at age two or three with his parents, leading to an all-round approach—sport, trad, bouldering, and big walls.Author of Beyond Limits: Details his philosophies, early expeditions, and the mindset shifts that helped him exceed every boundary he believed he had. This is one of my all time favorite books! Buy it here! Family Man & Mentor: Balances fatherhood, route-setting, and coaching, all while still climbing at the highest levels. What You'll LearnWhy “Failing” Can Be a Good ThingSteve explains how falling off a project is a chance to “get more attempts,” keeping the process fun rather than frustrating.Unstructured Training for Older ClimbersWhile he's never stuck to rigid periodized programs, Steve's focus on real-world climbing, targeted strength work, and plenty of active recovery has kept him sending hard.Embracing the Three PillarsSteve breaks down how technique, mental game, and strength are equally crucial. Older athletes often excel in technique and mindset, so bridging minor strength gaps can keep performance levels high. The Power of Good Habits (Even Quirky Ones!)From his no-milk, chocolate-in-granola breakfast to dancing past midnight, Steve's lifestyle reflects a balance between discipline and enjoyment—he does what keeps him energized without sacrificing fun.Balancing Family and Epic GoalsSteve shares how climbing with his kids or taking on smaller outdoor adventures keeps the spark alive. He believes maintaining varied styles and intensities of climbing can help avoid burnout. What Really Causes Performance Drop-OffsTune in for Steve's insights on why many climbers plateau—often due to too much focus on one aspect of training (e. g., pure strength) and neglect of mental or technical skills.Practical Fixes for Staying on Your GameDiscover actionable tips—like identifying your weakest link (finger strength? dynamic movement? fear of falling?)—and systematically addressing it in short, focused sessions. If you've enjoyed the show, please hit 5

Two of the legendary routes from the 90s are now at odds with each other (sort of). One of them was likely the first 9a in the world, but which was it? Hubble or Action Directe? In this bonus episode from Written In Stone, we examine the circumstances, discuss where the debate began, and hear from the only two people in the world who have climbed both routes – Alex Megos and Buster Martin – to try and decide once and for all... ...which route was really the world's first 9a? Cameos by Adam Ondra, Steve McClure, Ben Cossey, and Ben Moon himself. In 2000, Steve McClure completed a project Ben Moon had spent 120 days on and left unfinished, calling it Northern Lights and giving it 9a. The torch was passed. A few years later, he climbed a route that completed his journey - Hubble - saying that it might be more important to him than his own first ascents. One of which was Mutation, a candidate for the first 9a+ or even 9b in the world. In this bonus episode, Steve and Kris discuss the impact of Ben Moon and Hubble, the passing of the torch, and how it felt to have Ben return to form by climbing Steve's 9a route Rainshadow. Steven Dimmitt AKA ‘The Nugget Climbing Podcast' is the founder and owner of one of the hottest (and most interesting) interview shows in the climbing industry right now. It has only been going just over 2yrs but has already had a huge impact on the climbing community and features tonnes of well-chosen and crafted interviews with pros, coaches and climbing personalities. His show has featured some of the great climbers of all time and clients we've also tested or trained ourselves - including people like Ben Moon, Hazel Findlay and Steve McClure. Steven was also a client of ours at Lattice, some years ago, but connected with us again recently with Tom Randall as a guest on his own show. This got us thinking, if we've got someone who's spent the last 2 years interviewing some of the world's best climbers and most interesting members of the community, then surely he's observed some patterns and commonalities between all these individuals? In this episode, Tom chats to Steven about some of the guests on the show, how he pulls information from his sources and has utilised it in his own climbing or with his own clients and finally what he's learnt from his experiences of living and working on the road whilst trying to perform. Find out more about Steven's podcast here and his Patreon here. You can also find him on Instagram here! The world's first 9b? Maybe.... maybe not! Or is it just a really hard 9a+?! Will Bosi recently made the long-awaited 2nd ascent of Steve McClure's "Mutation" at Raventor which was first put up in 1998 - yes that's before Will was even born! On the back of an incredible run of form from Will - multiple 9a to 9b+ sport routes, and countless V12-V15 boulder sends this year, he's been on the form of his life. Yet despite this, Mutation took some serious effort to complete and pushed Will to really get everything just right. Tom Randall sat down with Will to chat through the whole story behind his ascent of Mutation. When he first started trying it, what the process involved and what he really thought about the grade. They dive into the nuances of vertical-style limestone crimping, how some things are just "hard to do" and what lies ahead for Will's next season. Don't forget to check out Will's YouTube channel 'William Bosi' for some awesome send footage from his brilliant season so far and more.... www.youtube.com/WilliamBosiSpecial thanks to Birds of Birds, Will Bosi, Adidas and Five Ten and photo credits to Band of Birds.

In this episode of Walking Distance presented by The Trek and hosted by Blissful Hiker (Alison Young), we are joined by Rebecca Olson, a team leader volunteer with King County Search and Rescue in Washington State, and Steve McClure, a board member of The Mountaineers, an alpine club and nonprofit in Seattle. The Mountaineers, founded in 1906, has trademarked the 10 Essentials and offers a book that's called the ‘bible' of mountaineering. Blissful Hiker covers how to use search and rescue services if needed, the 10 essentials and how to plan a hike, plus in depth gear recommendations that cover the 10 essentials. Interview with Rebecca Olson 0:59 - Introduction to Rebecca Olson 2:44 - What happened in your own ski accident that led to you becoming a search and rescue team leader? 4:20 - I imagine that most of our listeners know what search and rescue (SAR) is, but can you describe what you do? 5:10 - This is important to understand for hikers, to imagine that the person coming to rescue you is walking to you, so it takes some time. 6:18 - What are the majority of problems that you receive? 7:20 - Do you have any search and rescues that stand out to you? 8:40 - That should teach us to make sure we have the 10 essentials anytime we go out, and to ask ourselves “could I spend the night?” because most of us don't do that. 10:40 - These two people sound very lucky, and made the good decision to hunker down when the found a good spot. But you also do recovery, if you need to transport someone who has died in the backcountry. What is that like? 12:23 - Is doing recovery hard on you? 13:08 - You mentioned two situations where people pushed themselves too far or didn't have the right gear, but accidents do happen. What should you do if you find yourself in a dangerous situation outdoors or have an accident? 14:55 - What are some of the key things that people have done that led to their survival, in your experience? 17:04 - During COVID, there has been an increase of use in the backcountry, especially people that aren't as experienced. You said there has been an increase in calls during these past two years. Do you think there's a responsibility of hikers to not call if they really don't have to? 18:45 - Rebecca Olson's top tips for avoiding rescue or surviving in the backcountry. Interview with Steve McClure 20:00 - Steve McClure reads The Mountaineers 10 Essentials Limerick 21:35 - Background on the 10 Essentials 22:55 - Paradoxically, taking everything you need to be safe and comfortable in case of emergency can lead to injury. The trick is to balance the load to be able to travel quickly, but still have the essentials. 23:50 - You refer to the 10 essentials as the sacred scrolls for mountaineers. You did a pop quiz at a committee meeting, and no one could name all the 10 essentials. How did that lead to the revisions you made?26:20 - We should go through the list and talk about what the items actually mean. For instance, is navigation covered if you're using your phone, or do you always need a map? 27:30 - You mentioned an altimeter. How important is that for a hiker? 28:15 - Do altimeters come on phones or GPS, or is it a whole separate item? 28:45 - We've been talking about how important the 10 essentials are. But what's in your pack on a trip? 30:50 - I hiked the entire PCT and never turned on my headlamp. So it's really just there in case of emergency. What about sun protection and first aid? 32:05 - Do you ever pack anything in case of a bee string in your first aid kit? 32:27 - What about a knife and repair kit? 32:45 - For the fire category? 34:05 - What about your bivy sack and extras? 35:30 - What other tips do you have outside the 10 essentials? A LEGEND OF BRITISH CLIMBINGIn today's YouTube and podcast episode we have none other than Steve Mcclure who is one of the all-time greats of British climbing. We don't say this lightly either, because it takes a lot to cross the borders and generations of time. Steve has been operating right at the cutting edge for 25 years or so - this means there's a LOT of experience AND knowledge on what works when it comes to process and performance! He's redpointed up to 9b (Rainman), multiple 9a repeats and FAs, many of the hardest trad routes in the UK up to E10/11, bigwall adventures, international competition performances... it's a lot! Tom sits down with Steve in this episode to take on a broad range of topics around his career in climbing - all the way from mindset, to finger strength, to training during lockdown, to methods for "the older climber" to differences between inside and outside climbing. Fascinating stuff! Grab yourself a cup of tea (Yorkshire hopefully) and get ready for some amazing insights into three decades of climbing at the limit. Capitol Report talks with State Sen. Steve McClure following Gov. Pritzker’s State of the State Address…
Mina Leslie-Wujastyk has already established herself as one of the best sport climbers in the country, with redpoints up to 8c. For the past few seasons she has been attempting Rainshadow, Steve McClure’s iconic 9a at Malham. It’s more than a step above her previous ascents, and initially something that it hadn’t even occurred to her to try. It seemed too unfeasible. When pushing the limit at some point you will find it. We often say this with risk taking, but the same is true when pushing your physical boundaries. Over time Mina has become more confident that she could successfully redpoint Rainshadow, but at first it was an impossible dream. Staying motivated for a few sessions on a route isn’t hard; but staying motivated when your project enters double digits and multiple seasons isn’t easy. I wanted to understand how Mina stays focussed on a long term goal, and how she does that in the face of the chance that she might never succeed. In the last episode with Dave Thomas we saw how a need for control, maintaining integrity and establishing your own identity were important. Finding ways to enter that elusive flow state was how Dave achieved this. Mina isn’t out for risk or resolving inner conflicts, but her story boils down to the same key features: desire, belief and understanding her own identity. The difference is that for Mina flow is a tool to be utilised. STEVE McCLURE - the author of Beyond Limits, just established UK's hardest route: Rainman 9b (5.15b) at Malham Cove, home of another incredibly difficult McClure route: Overshadow - which was repeated by the legendary Adam Ondra back in 2007, confirming the rating as 9a+ (5.15a). If you want to learn how to navigate the most difficult climbing sequences without relying on your strength, finding the path of least resistance, this is one interview you don't want to miss. ABOUT: Steve McClure (born July 25, 1970) started climbing when he was a child with his parents. Initially he practiced trad climbing and started sport climbing only when he was 24. In 1998 he made the first ascent of Mutation, at Raven Tor, his first 9a and second 9a of UK in history. In 2000 he made the first ascent of another 9a, Northern Lights, in Kilnsey. The route was an old project of Ben Moon. In 2003 he established his third 9a, with the first ascent of Rainshadow, in Malham Cove. From 2000 to 2004 he competed in the Lead Climbing World Cup and in European Championships. On May 23, 2007 he made the first ascent of his hardest route, Overshadow in Malham Cove. This route is an extension to the 8a+ Overnite Sensation and at 2013 it represents the UK's hardest sport route. The free ascent took McClure about 30 days of work in three years. On May 16, 2011 Adam Ondra made the first and only repeat of the route, confirming the grade as a hard 9a+ (5.15a). In 2017 McClure completed his seven year project in Malham Cove; Rainman. Although Steve was reluctant to give the route a grade, he believed Rainman to be be considerably harder than Overshadow 9a+ (5.15a) - thus giving the route a modest grade of 9b (5.15b), making it UK's hardest route, and one of the hardest routes in the world.

The guys are joined this week by filmmaker/guitarist Steve McClure to discuss the great new rock documentary Hair I Go Again; a film that follows the long journey of two middle aged guys attempting to put their 80's rock band back together, the twists and turns, highs and lows, and challenges they face. Along the way, the guys get an education in the form of advice from numerous 80's rock luminaries including The Killer Dwarfs, Lorraine Lewis (Femme Fatale), Warrant, Jason McMaster, Tesla, Jack Russell, Steve Blaze (Lillian Axe), and Ron Keel. They also get advice from media personalities such as Eddie Trunk and Luc Carl. Hair I Go Again Hair I Go Again was a long time coming as the film was crowd funded a few years ago while the guys were on their journey to reunite the band. As you'll see in the film, getting 5 guys back together again is not an easy task. In this talk, Steve McClure shares his take on the making of the movie including quitting his day job to fully invest in this project, the tension between he and his partner on this journey Kyle Kruger, and what it was like to throw all caution to the wind in an effort to find out what might have been. I'm glad I did. I searched hard rock in iTunes and a breakdown of Warrant's Dog Eat Dog with producer Michael Wagener popped up. Being a huge fan of that perfect record I downloaded it to give it a shot. Wagener offered great insight and nuggets I had never known. The two hosts asked GREAT questions and they played most of an album I haven't heard in years. I went back and started picking off things that interested me. What I found was nothing less than brilliant. I had about 2800 CDs at the time. Having been re/introduced to things I'd never heard before or in years I went straight to the web and started buying music as if I had all the money in the world. I don't have all the money in the world. But I don't care as I have about a hundred more CDs as a direct result of this show. Who needs food? Music feeds my soul. These guys conduct great interviews and have been a great resource for hearing old forgotten classics. Just as important is they've introduced me to a lot of great new music. It's a great blend of memory lane and discovery street. Keep it up guys. You have a new subscriber and I will click through before purchasing anything on Amazon from now on.
