As leaders, it's on us to be thoughtful about how we help our people get better. Just yelling that someone messed up is not helpful. We need to provide an adequate solution. Dianna Nyad – She swam for 53 hours from Cuba to Florida. It looked like a solo mission. It was anything but. She needed a full team to make it happen. We need other people to help us accomplish big missions. A lot of people are afraid to win. They are afraid to put it all on the line and risk not being enough. Too many of us want to look cool and play it safe in case we lose. The people who sustain excellence over time commit 100% to what they're doing even though they might lose. It's worth it. It is “kind of a sin” to waste potential and the real champions never committed it. - Dan Jenkins Advice from her dad (legendary sports writer, Dan Jenkins): "Never let a thing go until it's as good as you can make it." "Interest yourself first before you'll interest anyone else." Key learning from Brian Daboll - Winning organizations are made up of people who've been doubted in the past. The "greats are a result of construction." We must be intentional. Go all in. Preparation. Practice. There must be a dept of preparation. "Never leave the field wishing you'd prepared more." "Pressure is what you feel when don't know what the hell to do." Michael Phelps was not born with an innate sense to swim fast. His body was well suited to swim but not much more than any other Olympian. "The work is what made him great." Day-to-day consistency leads to excellence. Derek Jeter built his schedule around being consistent every single day. Laird Hamilton built his resilience through doing hard things like cold plunges, saunas, and surfing tough waves. Activate your body to stress: Stress has two sides. We're meant to experience stress. Stress + Rest = Growth. We need stress to grow. Life is born without it. Pat Riley - What happens when people don't believe in their leader? They gear down their effort. Life/Career Advice: Shoe leather hard work. You can't substitute hard work. Find the thing you'd do for fun and see if you can build a career from it.   Sally Jenkins has been a columnist and feature writer for The Washington Post for more than twenty years. She is the author of twelve books of nonfiction including The Real All Americans, the story of the Carlisle Indian School, and its use of football as a form of resistance following the close of the Indian Wars. Her work for The Washington Post has included coverage of ten Olympic Games. This week, we discuss the keys to a successful taper! Every great training cycle includes a taper of about 10-14 days, allowing the body to recover and prepare for the stressors of race day. To most effectively address the ‘ins and outs' of a great taper, we break our discussion down into the things you should be doing (DO's) and the things you should avoid (DON'Ts). Ultimately, the basis of our discussion centers on the equation: Stress + Rest = Growth. When it's time to taper, it means that you have embraced the stress of an effective training cycle, and the rest will be the deciding factor for your growth as a runner. We hope that this episode provides you with a more detailed understanding of what a taper is and how you can implement it in preparation for a goal race!   As a peak performer I struggle with relaxation, but in today's episode I share my epiphany on why rest is essential to your long term success.  Like everything in life we experience life in distinct cycles. If we spend too much time in expansion there is no room for healing, transition or creation, all of which are essential phases of growth. It can be so tempting to envy those who have achieved monumental success and begin mimicking their routine, pushing yourself to your limits but stop and consider how much time these peak performers spend in relaxation. Without taking time to pause, even the best of us will experience burnout. In this episode you will learn how to balance that masculine and feminine energy by utilizing both rest and productivity to reach your ultimate goals faster and with the energy needed to maintain those achievements.   Key Takeaways: Roger Bannister: Resting is an essential component for peak performance [3:27] Stress + Rest = Growth [6:36] Constant stress without proper management can lead to burnout [7:00] Preparing your energy to receive [8:40] Without energy, you may not be able to maintain your new accomplishments [9:00] Embracing the cycles of life [10:00] You cannot expand into a new version of yourself without giving space to prepare [11:00] What season are you in?:  Healing, transition, creation or expansion? [12:15] Balancing the Masculine and Feminine; both rest and action are essential [13:00] When you rest you can be more productive and be of more service [14:00] Memorable Quotes: “Stress isn't a bad thing, it's the amount of stress and the way that we manage stress that ultimately leads to burnout.”[7:12]   “What I see with a lot of people I work with is that they hit their new financial goal because they have stressed themselves out because they have overworked and are like “Yes I hit it” but then what happens is they fall four steps back and they lose it energetically, emotionally, physically because they didn't have the adequate amount of energy to hold it.”  [9:10]   “Why many people don't quantum leap, or step into a really big and very expanded version of themselves or financial goal is because their energy is tired, it is depleted.” [11:10]   “We are human beings, we are not human doings and if we want to continue to have sustainable growth that makes a difference, that we are really able to hold with integrity for the long term, it's going to require us to do things differently and to create a different paradigm and to live in a different paradigm that really understands the importance of rest.” [13:00]     Do You Feel That You Were Meant For More?   Join me for the 'Purpose to Prosperity' Virtual Summit!  Get trained by 20+ coaches and leading experts in Prosperity & Purpose!   PURPOSE TO PROSPERITY' FREE REGISTRATION: https://purposetoprosperityevents.com/carissajohnsen   Know someone that should be on the podcast? That has been achieved successfully by all accounts, with the book selling more copies each year than the year prior. There were two major media appearances that kicked things off. Full show notes at www.LearningLeader.com Twitter/IG: @RyanHawk12  https://twitter.com/RyanHawk12 Brad Stulberg is the author of Peak Performance, The Passion Paradox, and The Practice of Groundedness. He coaches executives, entrepreneurs, physicians, and athletes. He is also co-creator of The Growth Equation, an online platform dedicated to defining and attaining a more fulfilling and sustainable kind of success. Notes: Build deep community over efficiency and optimization. It takes more time. It has a physical connection and a sense of belonging. Don't move so fast that you don't see people. Keys to great leadership -- Look at the boundaries and create space for work to unfold. Don't be the helicopter parent or the micromanager. Don't neglect them, but ensure they have the space to grow and blossom. Move your body to ground your mind - It's so important to have a physical practice. Make it part of your work. It needs to be in order to support your mental health. The Milwaukee Bucks won the NBA championship. Their MVP leader, Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 50 points and helped his team win. But he may have earned even more fans when he was asked during a press conference how he keeps his mind right. His three-part answer, in his own words: “Focusing on the past is ego. Focusing on the future is pride. Focusing on the present is humility.” The six principles of groundedness:  Accept where you are to get where you want to go Be present so you can own your attention and energy Be patient and you'll get there faster Embrace vulnerability to develop genuine strength and confidence Build deep community over efficiency and optimization Move your body to ground your mind Trying to be "balanced" does not work. When you care deeply about something it draws you in. That's the point. You don't need to force some kind of proportionate allocation of your life. Aim for the self-awareness to PRIORITIZE and CHOOSE how you spend your time and energy. Wherever you are, the goal post is always 10 yards down the field. If you develop a mindset, "If I just do this, or just accomplish that, THEN I'll arrive," you're in for trouble. There is no arriving. The human brain didn't evolve for it. Enjoy the process. Be where you are. Everyone wants to be SUCCESSFUL. But few people take the time and energy to define the success they want. As a result, they spend most, if not all, of their lives chasing what society superimposes on them as success. Define your values. Craft a life around them. THAT is success. Stress + Rest = Growth. Too much of the former not enough of the latter you get injury, illness, burnout. Too much of the latter, not enough of the former you get complacency, stagnation. This equation is universal. It holds true for individual and organizational growth. "Wouldn't this be rad?" The process of striving for ambitious goals is what brings fulfillment. The process is how you live your life. "Your addiction to growth might be making you miserable." The human condition is oriented towards more. Advice on building a business: Think less about building the business and more about building the life you want to live. Brad limits himself to 15 clients and they only meet on Monday and Friday. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday are days for creativity, reading, research. Brad optimizes for autonomy and freedom. For the over-worked, over-scheduled VP: Find 2 hours a week for deep work. That's a start. Challenge the culture, test assumptions. Think of your schedule as a moral document Sustain excellence: Wise patience... Step back sometimes When making a big decision, adopt the lens of a wise observer, what would your wiser self tell you to do?  Stimulus + your response = outcome When you feel restless to do something, use that as an alarm. Force yourself to take three deep breaths. What will you regret less? No raising voices... Your language shapes how you think and act... The Good Enough Mother: Not helicopter Not each and every need Doesn't neglect Gives a safe space to grow and blossom For the insecure leader... Approach them with curiosity Musicians have intense periods of focused practice. People have breakthroughs when they have been on a sabbatical... Embrace vulnerability to develop genuine strength and confidence with others... "The way to build trust is by being vulnerable." Don't be performative. It must be real. Build deep community over efficiency and optimization It takes more time to meet in person. Brad's tattoo sleeve: Mountains sit through it all. Trees = grounded, the roots support it. We need to tend to our own roots.

Chase DiMarco shares tips for practicing an evidence-based study technique called interleaving. Interleaving is tricky to apply because there is no golden rule that is analogous to the 1-1-3-1-1 rule for spaced repetition, for example. Instead, the effectiveness of interleaving depends on various factors such as the topic, the depth at which we are studying and our schedule.    [01:28] Interleaving Topics [03:36] Interleaving Materials [04:33] Choosing Study Resources [06:52] Filtering Question Banks [08:19] Stress + Rest = Growth [10:57] Recency Bias [12:14] Repeating the Same Question Bank   To interleave topics, one method is to ramp up the number of topics and the intensity of study as the week goes forward. For example:   Monday: Anatomy, 80% intensity Tuesday: Pharmacology + Anatomy, 100% intensity Wednesday: Biochemistry + Pharmacology + Anatomy, 100% intensity   This method provides several benefits including overcoming the forgetting curve. We tend to forget materials after three days, if we do not review them. This method allows us to review old topics, whilst still learning new ones. In addition, we can prevent burnout. If we study anatomy for the whole week, for example, we will get very tired.    We can also choose to interleave study materials, in addition to study topics. For example, taking the example schedule above, we might listen to an anatomy lecture on Monday, use an anatomy question bank on Tuesday, and then use flashcards on Wednesday. Using various materials for the same topic will help us to remember it better.    In choosing study resources, Chase reminds us that the evidence for one question bank over another is usually anecdotal — maybe something we read about in a forum. As such, if finances are tight, we should not be afraid to choose a more affordable resource, which is likely just as good. Referencing a forthcoming interview with Dr. Corey Fawcett on the Prospective Doctor podcast, every dollar that we spend on our education can add up to four dollars by the end of repayment. Before purchasing a resource, we should look at our budget and decide if the resource is really worth it.   Two more things to keep in mind: 1. remember to schedule breaks and 2. be aware of recency bias. We tend to schedule 7-day weeks without realizing that a good balance of stress and rest is essential to growth. Secondly, recency bias refers to the tendency to choose an answer to a question because we covered a topic involving that answer very recently. To combat this, we should apply metacognition and ask ourselves why we choose an answer — because it is correct, or because it is recent? #134: Tara Newman: Bold Leadership: The Difference Between High Achievers & High Performers

In 2009 Tara Newman and her husband declared bankruptcy. The business Tara’s husband had started had failed. In this episode, Tara tells her powerful story. Tara now has a business of her own. She is a high-performance leadership coach. After years in the corporate world supporting leaders and high performers, she created a thriving business, coaching high-achieving clients. In this episode, she talks about getting through the bankruptcy, starting her own business and how a high achiever becomes a high performer. I know that you had many experiences, including overcoming bankruptcy and starting your own business. How did that all come about? How did you fall down and pick yourself up? In 2005, Tara’s husband decided to start a manufacturing business. It came with significant start-up costs to purchase machinery, materials and build out a manufacturing space. What kind of business? Her husband manufactured rotationally molded plastic parts which include things like mannequins and rock climbing holds. Initially, he had success but then the 2008 financial crisis happened and people started sending this kind of work to China. They lost two of their biggest customers. Then in 2009, the bank called in their line of credit. They were given 30 days to repay $100000. Tara’s dad was the 3rd partner in the business and he had put up his commercial property as collateral. They were also getting foreclosure notices on their house. How were you feeling? Terrified. Shut down. Catatonic. But she was also grateful for what they were going through because she knew it was going to be the greatest lesson of their life if they survived. Was there an ‘if you survived’? Tara felt stuck but she didn’t feel hopeless. She knew there was something on the other side of this. Tell me about the lowest moment. It was all low. And then there were moments of hope. The book The Secret had just come out and Tara’s mum told her to read it. She read it and it was the right book for her to read at the time. It helped her frame things more positively. It helped her seek solutions from a positive perspective. She started journaling and they had garage sales every weekend to help pay for groceries. Getting the foreclosure notices was a moment. She didn’t know how to process everything. She had never felt anything so catastrophic in her life. What was the turning point? The turning point when the bank called in the note. They were only keeping that business open to meet that financial obligation to the bank. They had the thought that once they had paid back the credit to the bank they could quit the business. After the note was called in Tara’s Dad liquidated some assets to pay it. When Tara and her husband realized that they couldn’t close the business, pay back her Dad and pay the credit card debt they had, they decided to declare bankruptcy. Tara is a fighter and she decided that this wasn’t going to define her. Even though when they declared bankruptcy, it felt like a death sentence. Tara had been wanted to start her own business and it no longer felt like that could happen. When did you declare bankruptcy? In 2010 they declared bankruptcy. So they are in year 9 of an 11-year term. In 2010 you declared bankruptcy. For the next year, what did that look like? There is not a lot of information available on how to overcome bankruptcy. Tara’s husband closed the business and was able to liquidate some of the machines and leftover material. He wasn’t in the right state to get a job. So he used some of that money to buy a trailer and do handyman services for a year while he wrapped up the business and figured out what to do next. He felt like a colossal failure and needed a lot of coaching and support to be able to out there and get a job. With Tara’s support, he was able to find a well-paying job. Over this time they learned so much about money - how to save and leverage their money. They became minimalists and learned that they didn’t need much. Each time they had a garage sale they had to dig a little deeper to find more stuff that they could get rid of What were you thinking? What was a thought that was going through your mind? When you go through something so traumatic, the ability to think and feel shuts down. The way you take in information changes. Tara could be in in the line with a cart full of groceries and two babies as her card is being declined. What’s going through your mind though? Is it ‘I don’t want to be doing this anymore’? When Tara’s husband was doing the home improvement work, things weren’t much better. And she told him she was done. He needed to go and get a job because she wasn’t losing the house. And how did you come back? For the most part, when they were going through this they were terrible communicators. They didn’t want to voice the reality of the situation and talk about being afraid. Once they started talking about it, the stress started to decrease. Having kids helped because they wanted to give them some sense of normalcy. Tara journaled a lot as a way of communicating with herself What was your first step to working again? Tara had been working full time throughout this time, even while helping her husband on the business. What was one of the biggest lessons you learned? You can live on a lot less than you think you need. They didn’t realize how little they needed to live on and to thrive. After declaring bankruptcy, her husbands way back to himself was ironman triathlons. He would train 20 hours a week and threw himself into redefining himself and his success. In 2014 he raced Ironman Lake Placid and stood in the finishing circle. Tara looked at him and felt like she was in the shadow of his success. That’s when she decided she was going to start a business. In August 2015 she left her corporate job. She had started her business and it was doing ok. There was enough to indicate that she’d be able to support herself and bring in money. Were you scared? She wasn’t scared because she’d spent 9 months building her business while working full-time. She knew that she had started to build something and that the worst that could happen was that she would have to go back to work. She wanted to put away some money because the first year of business was going to have a lot of ups and downs. Her husband declared they were going to go on austerity and spend nothing. Tara knew she couldn’t go back there and that wasn’t going to work for her. She decided they were going to work on what they needed to thrive. She wrote a whole page of things in her journal. And was shocked to realize that none of them cost money. What was in there? To have a cozy blanket to sit on the couch with Intimate time with her husband Time spent with her kids Hugging her kids and telling them how important they are to her Time to read That list became the basis on how they spent their time, their money and their energy. It allowed them to save a tonne of money. If something wasn’t on their thrive list they didn’t spend money on it and if it was, they did. I love this idea of what do I need to thrive. There some things on the list that were silly. Tara knew she wanted a manicure once a week. That made her feel good about herself. It became a touchpoint for herself. She would look at her nails and think where is your mind at if you can’t spend $20 and 45 minutes to get your nails done. So what happened? Did you start to feel like you were thriving? Tara really did. She’s been wanting to leave her job for 10 years but the moment when you get the thing you dreamed about, it can be tricky. She had a few moments. She had the thing that she wanted and now she couldn’t lose the thing. In her worst moments, she knew that she just needed to go back to that list of things and she would be alright. Tara reflects on the failure of her husbands business and realizes that it was not the fault of the economy. They were in survival mode and couldn’t bring themselves to take the actions they should have taken. They could have hired coaches, employed more people or invested in sales training. Do you think to have a catastrophic failure gave you confidence and showed you how resilient you are? Absolutely. The worst thing that can happen to her business is that she goes bankrupt. And she’s been there. Don’t you think that the fear of the worst that can happen stops a lot of people? Oh yeah. But you’ve seen it so nothing can stop you because you got through that. Sometimes we can’t formulate beliefs because we don’t have proof. Tara has found it useful to borrow someone else’s proof. That’s why she shares her bankruptcy story. So that other people can borrow it. You work with a lot of high performers and achievers. Do you think they take it harder? When you are a high performer or achiever you face more fear than the average person because you are leaning into your growth edge. You are taking on challenges that most people won’t. I told one of my clients that she was a high performer because she was being really hard on herself and she was achieving. It was the first time that she had heard that identification for herself. Often high performers look at where they’re lacking because they want to achieve even more. When Tara worked for a corporate company she was running the performance management function. She created the way they measured performance and helped people evaluate and improve their performance. Every employer who was labeled as high potential would rate themselves harder than anyone else. People who were low potential had an inflated sense of their own performance. How do you inspire bold leadership for high performers? Most high performers who think of themselves as high performers are high achievers. Can you share the difference between a high performer and a high achiever? Tara thinks that being a high performer or a high achiever are both great things to be. But if you can turn a high achiever into a high performer it makes them even better. High achievers are really hard on themselves, try to control the outcome, set really big goals for themselves and don’t chunk things together. They achieve a lot of amazing stuff but struggle to find their wins and burn the candle at both ends in their pursuit of achievement. High performers know that you can’t burn the candle at both ends and that there is an equation to growth. Stress + Rest = Growth. They are as serious about their recovery as they are about their work. Sometimes I dance between a high achiever and a high performer. When I’m a high performer, I perform better. When I’m in high achiever mode, I’m typically stressed and unhappy and I know I need to shift. So you can oscillate between the two? Having an awareness of where you are on the spectrum can help you achieve with greater ease. High performers close the majority of their tabs. They know how to focus and have an appreciation for deep work. High achievers spin out quickly and get distracted. It doesn’t mean they aren’t achieving things. But do all those little achievements add up to the thing you want the most? High performers are incredibly discerning. They will slow down before they speed up. Society wants you to be a high achiever. That’s how we’ve been conditioned. It takes a lot to go against that conditioning and do the deep work on yourself to be a high performer. You have to be really bold, have strong beliefs, strong boundaries and have some unwavering and unapologetic ways about you. And you’re going to piss people off. Not everybody is going to like you or agree with you and that requires you to be bold. How do you think people can shift into a high-performance mindset? What’s a really practical way people can get into the mindset of a high performer? Tara likes looking at results. Everything is a result but it may not be the result you want. Was the result you got worth that time and effort? It’s important to be really intentional around your actions. I have recently shifted from achiever to performer. I put a hard stop to social media. Deleted Facebook, stopped scrolling and now there are no more comparisons. I felt like I was losing time and the result was I was beating myself up about what I wasn’t doing compared to other people. If you’d have told me this in achiever mode I’d have known I should quit social media but said I’m not going to do that right now. Another thing you should be monitoring are your ‘yeah, buts’. Because it’s a sure sign of resistance. This is an episode of Crush It Mondays.  Each week, I'll bring to you an inspiring message, habit, or contemplation in 5 minutes or less to get your week off to a powerful start.  This week, I want to talk about how to be brave enough to rest.  If you've been listening to this show for awhile, you've probably heard some conversations I've had around identity, burnout, mental fatigue, and how to define rest.  The fact is that for driven people like us, it's really hard to take down time.  I would hazard to guess that the majority of us need more downtime in our busy lives.  Everything we see tells us to hustle, train hard, work harder, crush it, do epic shit! But in order to crush it, we need to look at rest as a more weighted contributor to the equation.  As you heard in episode 14 from the book Peak Performance, Stress + Rest = Growth. And going WAY back to episode 1, we heard from Dr. Kristin Keim that it's not just about time management, it's about energy management.  There's a couple different types of rest; there's physical rest and there's mental rest.  Last year, one of the biggest lessons I learned was that mental fatigue greatly contributes to perception of physical effort.  If you had a hard day at work, or your "rest" day off your sport involved a lot of mental stimulation, you still may need more time off.  If you're pushing your body hard physically and also expending energy on projects, family, work and feel run ragged, you might need to rethink your training. In addition to muscles, your cardiac and respiratory systems needing time to heal, we also often forget about our endocrine system and hormonal regulation.  Fatigue also can contribute to hormone imbalances- like cortisol.   I did a videoshoot last week.  I raced Marathon Nationals, got home Monday night, and starting Tuesday morning, I did three 12-14 hour days. I wasn't riding the whole time, but I was standing, hiking, driving, riding technical terrain that involved a lot of concentration, and trying to get email done late when I got home.  I was frustrated over the long weekend because I was completely exhausted.  Instead of crushing it, I spent time laying around, I binge- watched Netflix, and kept my rides really short and easy.  It may sound silly, but it takes courage to rest.  Personally, I actually feel guilty and anxious when I'm not pushing myself but it helps to recognize that the rest is still a part of training.  And rest also helps with our mental health so that we can show up in a better mood, with more patience, and will have the ability to be more creative.  Rest also means making sleep a priority.  If you can, aim to be in bed for 8-9 hours. There's no magic bullet- but sleeping, eating healthy, minimizing alcohol, and taking down time for reflection can make a big difference. And if you still feel tired, take more rest.  You won't get faster or get smarter if you push too hard while you're tired.  And be kind to yourself while you are resting.  Remind yourself it's part of the process.  On days I feel terrible on my bike, and I start beating myself up, my husband says to me, "That's okay. It means you're still getting faster and just need more rest." I think that's a really positive way to reframe being tired.  Being able to recognize when you're beating yourself up, pause, and then change how you're talking to yourself with self compassion and big picture thinking will make rest seem like a bigger part of your work.  If it's hard, think of what you'd tell a friend if they were saying negative things to themself. Everyone has their individual limit of how much stimulus is too much.  We can't do it all and be the best all the time, and that is okay.  So for this week and beyond, I challenge you to actually take the rest when you need it and work on being okay with it. Needing more rest just means that you are still getting faster and smarter.
