These basic principles will work like the hyperdrive in the Millennium Falcon and propel you toward your biggest goals and aspirations.  Lets dive right in.  1. Take 15 minutes at the beginning of your day to write out your priorities and tasks. Don't stop there! Review the priorities and tasks throughout the day to keep on track.  2. Energy Demands Increase Over Time So far, we have discussed the degree of change going on in the world and how technology can be a force for good, but ironically, can erode personal resiliency as well. Now let’s look at the reality of our own personal energy and why it’s critically important to the resiliency equation. Physical energy peaks in your 30s and often begins to diminish (unless you take proactive steps to fight this trend) as you transition into your 40s and 50s. At the same time this erosion of energy begins to happen, the demands on your time and energy begin to increase, due to such things as: Aging parents Still helping your children Increased job responsibilities If you don’t look after your energy and resiliency reserves, you could hit a crossover point where your capacity is outpaced by the demands on your energy. This can lead to: ● Stress leave and burnout ● Heart disease, stroke, cancer or other health maladies ● Emotional and psychological disengagement Take a few moments on the current state of your energy and capacity.  If you lead teams and you are looking for ways of increasing capacity through the cultivation of enhanced physical, emotional, cognitive energy be sure to reach out to us. Change and Stress – Get Clear On Your Current Reality

s I’ve mentioned in previous posts, our lives are changing at a faster rate than at any time in human history. The amount of information in a single issue of The New York Times is about equal to the amount of information that people in the 17th century would have assimilated in their entire lifetime! Not only are we experiencing an explosion of information, we are seeing significant changes politically, socially, environmentally, economically and technologically. These changes are creating an environment that is extremely stimulating but can challenge our ability to prioritize and focus. We are all trying to understand and respond to the changes occurring in our work and personal lives. Most of us try to react to these changes in positive and productive ways, but sometimes we feel overwhelmed and confused. The skills and strategies in these posts will help you to manage effectively key “Transition Points” experienced through your life. The experience of change can cover a broad spectrum. It can be unexpected, sudden and unsettling, or it can be welcomed and planned. External global forces, as well as internal economic and social pressures, contribute to accelerating change. Today, change and new transitions are a way of life and resiliency training will help individuals to deal with change and take advantage of the opportunities that emerge. In response to change, you need to: ● Be change capable (the building of resiliency) ● Meet the challenge by staying effective and productive (applying the skills) We Need a New Set of Skills Keeping yourself afloat in the face of change demands skills beyond what you learned in school or at work. We need to be very intentional in how we manage all aspects of our lives; physical, emotional, relational, psychological, financial and spiritual (purpose, vision, and missions). Impact of Change Everyone reacts to change differently. For example, some of us find that adjusting to a new home takes enormous effort, while others say very little adjustment is necessary. Your ability to handle stress is also dependent not just on the primary event, but on other events that are taking place at that time. Let’s say you have just been given a promotion at work. If this event happens when life is calm and things are going well, you will experience this event as exciting or as a positive new challenge. However, if this promotion takes place when you’re going through a marriage separation and your teenager is struggling in school, the promotion may be experienced as extremely stressful. Similarly, there is a growing body of research that confirms that how you experience and internalize stress has as much to do with your attitude toward the stressful event as the actual event itself. People who practice change management skills have learned to reduce the stress of change and challenge Negative Effects of Stress Stress can be defined in many different ways. For our purposes, excessive stress is defined when you come to the point of feeling that “things are out of control.” It’s essentially when the demands being placed on you are in excess of the personal and social resources that you have available to you. In 1967, psychiatrists Thomas Holmes and Richard Rahe decided to study whether or not stress contributes to illness. They surveyed more than 5,000 medical patients and asked them to say whether they had experienced any of a series of 43 life events in the previous two years. Each event called a Life Change Unit (LCU), had a different “weight” for stress. The more events the patient added up, the higher the score. The higher the score, and the larger the weight of each event, the more likely the patient was to become ill. Within their group of 5,000 medical patients, they determined that those who had suffered serious illnesses or were involved in accidents had the highest scores, meaning they had experienced the most stressful changes in the previous years. Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale One of my main goals for this series of blog posts is to provide you with strategies you can use to build resiliency into your life. My expectation for you is this newfound resiliency will help you deal more effectively with the change and life events going on in your life. By understanding your stress, you will improve your self-awareness and self-care strategies, enabling you to deal more effectively with stress and maintain your health as you transition through stressful periods in your life. By using the Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale that follows, you can measure the stress load you carry, leading you to think or reflect on what you should do about it.   What was your score? ______ Take some time to reflect on what’s going on in your life. Did you feel good about your score or did it cause concern? Remember, self-awareness is the first step to improving your situation. What Can You Do? If you find that you are at a moderate or high level of risk, an obvious first thing to do is to try to avoid future life crises. This is easier said than done. However, we usually have some level of control that may allow us to reduce our stress load. It’s about avoiding times that will make things more difficult. For example, if you are planning to move homes, it may be prudent to time this event the year after you have successfully transitioned your daughter to a new University 1500 miles away. You can learn conflict resolution skills to minimize conflict with other people. You can avoid taking on new obligations or engaging with new programs of study if you know that your partner is going through a major life change. Sometimes, it’s about choosing to take things easy and look after yourself. All of this takes the cultivation of self-awareness, which is something that these blogs will help you with. More than anything else, going through this exercise brings attention to stress that you may not be aware of. Awareness can lead to reflection and reflection can lead to positive action. One Strategy to Improve Everything

Could there be one single strategy that could change everything? It should come as no surprise that the one thing is sleep. What do we know about those of us who sleep 6-7 hours? This level of sleep destroys our immune system It doubles our risk of cancer It increases our risk of heart disease It can put you in a pre-diabetic state It causes negative cascading of health defects “There MAY be the odd person who can hack their sleep but that is RARE. There is no such thing as training your body to not need sleep!” So what should we do? Researchers say to shoot for 7-10 hours of sleep After 10 days of 7 hours of sleep your mind becomes “mush” so avoid this bad habit Lack of sleep destroys empathy Sleep clears out and organizes grey matter Now that you know that, here are some practical tips: Make sleep consistent. Make a sleep schedule and strictly adhere to it. Blue light isn’t the only problem! Get all light out of your room, maybe invest in blackout blinds like these! Make your environment cool. Take a hot bath before bed, this encourages the release of your temperature internally. Exercise can help with sleep, but avoid exercise 3 hours before downtime. No booze, coffee or sleeping pills. 10 Health Strategies for an Amazing 2017

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 5, 2017 5:39

One - Get your sleep. Just as a healthy diet and regular exercise are necessary and essential for good health, so is sleep. Cutting back on snooze-time can lead to an out-of-control appetite (some studies show that people who sleep less are more likely to be overweight), a greater risk for coronary heart disease and type 2 diabetes. So try to get the recommended eight hours of sleep needed for good health, safety, and optimum performance. Two - Rise and shine — and eat. Breakfast gets your body’s metabolism going again after a night of sleeping, and gives you the gradual and adequate energy you need to get through the morning. You don't have to eat snacks to supplement your energy needs and expenditure. It doesn’t have to be complicated too. Microwave instant oatmeal, topping it with skim milk or yogurt and berries; in minutes, you’ll enjoy filling fiber with a protein and vitamin boost. Hard-boiled eggs, whole-grain toast with almond butter or a fruit and yogurt smoothie are also quick, nutritious choices. Three - Wash your hands. From banishing cold and flu germs to preventing foodborne illnesses, frequent hand-washing is one of the smartest preventive habits you can adopt. Wash your hands with warm water and soap before handling food, eating, or touching your face, and after using the bathroom or coming into contact with potentially contaminated objects such as doorknobs, toys, and menus. Four - Know your family health history. Your family’s medical history can give you valuable information about your health. Many diseases, such as heart disease, breast cancer, diabetes, and depression, can have a genetic component. The more you know about the health of your relatives, the better informed you’ll be about your risk factors and how to manage them. Five - Eat mindfully. One of the significant differences between people who successfully manage their weight and people who regularly struggle is mindful eating. Turn off the TV or computer, sit down at a table with your food on a plate, and focus on eating. Savor the smell and enjoy the taste. Put your fork down between bites, and take the time to enjoy your meal. Chances are you will eat less and feel more satisfied. Six - Add variety to your diet. Wild salmon and sardines are just a couple of the fish that provide heart-healthy fats such as omega-3, which lower your risk of cardiovascular disease and help preserve your cognitive function. Aim for two servings a week; more than that may add too much mercury to your system. On occasion, indulge in a glass of red wine (or any alcoholic beverage) or a bite of dark chocolate that contains at least 75% cocoa-both contain antioxidants that can benefit your heart. Also, both may relax blood vessels, which reduces clotting somewhat and makes it easier for blood to get to the heart. And finally, try to eat 5-7 servings a day of fruits and vegetables, and minimize your intake of carbohydrates. Seven - Volunteer. In addition to helping others, volunteers themselves often benefit from “giving back” to the communities in which they live and work and enjoy a rewarding sense of doing something good for someone else. As a volunteer, you gain valuable experience, learn new skills, make friends and meet others who share the same interests. 8Maintain strong family and social networks. Research has shown that people who have family and friends they can turn to for support and companionship may be healthier and less likely to experience depression than those who spend most of their time alone. Looking for new friends? Join a club, take a class or volunteer. Nine - Take a time out. At least once a day, close your eyes and focus on taking ten deep, full breaths. Inhale through your nose, feel your diaphragm expand, and exhale through your mouth. Deep, focused breathing slows your heart rate, calms the body and, as a result, calms your mind and reduces stress. Mix in at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity at least five days a week as well. Choose something you enjoy and will stick to. Recent studies found that brisk walking is just as good for your heart as jogging, or try biking or swimming. You needn’t do it all at once; two 15-minute workouts or three 10-minutes blocks work equally well. Ten - Drink more water to prevent constipation, dehydration, and other related diseases. Whether you drink bottled, filtered or tap, water helps keep your cells hydrated, flushes out toxins and prevents dehydration. Tea, juices, and sports drinks count, too, but watch out for added sugar, artificial flavorings, and caffeine, all of which can detract from the benefits. http://takechargeofchange.com Welcome to this edition of the Take Charge of Change podcast. In the podcast, I will out- line seven strategies that will help you to plan for a great 2017. Resolve any unfinished personal issues this month. If 2017 is going to be amazing, you'll need to drive it forward in a focused manner.  Unresolved issues sap energy and create a distraction. Take action to resolve conflicts with people who support you. Look inward to determine where you have conflicted with yourself. Set time aside to consider, commit and be accountable for your preferred future Take stock of all your opportunities. As soon as the year starts, you'll likely get right into daily work patterns that went on hiatus during the holidays.  If buried in the day to day, you may gloss over great opportunities only visible from a high level.  Use the holiday down time to reflect, and to make a list of every potential opportunity that can improve your life and business.  List three obstacles you can reasonably eliminate. Many of life's obstacles aren't complicated or even difficult to overcome, but they do require focus and commitment. Start by honestly assessing 2016 to determine who or what got in the way of your success. Chances are a few of these same obstacles are threatening your happiness in 2017 as well.  Pick three that you can work on over the next 90 days and get a jump on them. Start with the obstacles where you have the most control: your bad habits. List five people you are committed to meet. Somewhere out there are people who can help you.  They may be role models, mentors, referral sources or even new partners. These people can help take your performance and rewards to a whole new level. The only reason they don't do it now is that you haven't built a relationship of mutual value. Identify critical skills to master. Most of us are the happiest learning. Learning a challenging skill boosts confidence and creates a sense of accomplishment. Figure out a couple of new skills that will increase your profile and usefulness to those around you.  Budget the time in 2017 to ensure you have the necessary hours to make it happen. Schedule calendar time in January with those you value the most. Everyone is busy during the holidays. End-of-year commitments, holiday parties, and travel to see family can all keep people from having quality one-on-one time. There are people in your life who bring you joy, learning, and growth. Time with them is precious and sparse. Reach out to them today and get a January lunch on the calendar before year-end.  Plan an Amazing New Year's Eve. There's a good reason New Year's Eve is the only holiday celebrated by nearly everyone on the same day worldwide, regardless of nationality, race or religion. It is a celebration of new beginnings. The focus to a great measure defines the success rate of change or the goal achievement that we will experience in life. Our ability to marshal attention has a huge impact on our life success and our ability to use our skills and talents. Some of the first formal studies on focus took place during the second world war. One of the first findings was that radar operators had the ability to stay vigilant and alert for many hours, even if they were experiencing sleep deprivation - as long as their motivation was high. If The motivation was low, they nodded off very quickly. The link between attention and focus ripples through almost everything we seek to accomplish. Typically, we only notice the endpoints of attention, not what's happening during attention. Our attention is engaged in a myriad of activities: comprehension, memory, learning, sensing how were feeling, reading the emotions of others, and interacting with others smoothly. Attention is under appreciated and usually goes unnoticed. And yet, attention has a huge impact on our total experience of life. So what are some ways you can marshal your attention? Here are a few ideas to get you started with your list. Make sure that you're getting enough rest. Nothing destroys our ability to pay attention and to focus then burning the candle at both ends. If you haven't done this for a long time, book some time in your calendar to get refocused on your life purpose, your vision for the future and critical missions in your life. If you believe strongly in something, you will experience an increased ability to focus Practice the principle of oscillation. Be a student of you. Clearly, understand those times of the day that your focusing powers are at the maximum. Make sure you book high leverage activities into these times. Take periodic breaks through your day to increase your energy and focusing ability. It could be an afternoon workout, a walk around the block or simply deep breathing At the beginning of each day learn to focus your mental and emotional energy by reflecting on the most important projects and tasks that you need to accomplish through the day. Throughout the day be sure to review this list to maintain your attention and at the end of each day reflect on your accomplishments and jot down those tasks that you need to work on the following day. This simple habit will help to improve your focusing powers immeasurably There are many other strategies to pursue, but hopefully, these ideas will get you started. How Tech and Media is Reducing Your Quality of Life

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 13, 2016 6:19

In this edition of the Take charge of change podcast, we will discuss why creating technology and media free zones is critical to your personal and professional success. The thousand channel universe, social media, and technology are all crying out for attention. Many social scientists and psychologists would argue that the human brain was never meant to function in a 24/7 news and information age. There may be positives attached to these technologies, but there are significant negatives as well. There are much-needed cognitive practices and strategies that we need to learn to ensure that we are not derailed intellectually, emotionally and relationally during this exploding information and technology age. Let's talk about the impact of media. Your brain has a couple of small, almond-shaped structures called the amygdala. The amygdala’s primary role is to attune us to potential danger. It’s a part of the brain that triggers the fight or flight response. That part of the brain that gets you ready to run from the tiger. Unfortunately, the amygdala has a tough time differentiating between real threats and perceived threats. Because of this, it's important to understand the connection between the microchip, technology, the proliferation of information, the drive for viewership by the media and how these factors and can lead to overwhelming and diminished capacity. Media’s job is to perpetuate bad anxiety in our lives on a day-to-day basis so that we will pay attention to the news information that they are churning out. News outlets know we pay way more attention to the negative stuff. Much of this information is not relevant to our day-to-day lives. In fact, we could ignore it for weeks or months without it having a significant impact on our lives. However, when we expose ourselves to this media content, we drive the amygdala into action. As the amygdala is activated, one of the results is the diminished capacity of the prefrontal cortex, the logical thinking and planning part of our brain. We begin to experience increased surges of adrenaline throughout the body; we lose our ability to see the broad range of options needed to make good quality decisions, and our focus begins to narrow. Decision-making and reasoning abilities are compromised! So, what are some strategies you can use to fight this secret war that is waging against your peace of mind? First - Question Quantity Ask yourself the question, “Am I consuming too much media?” If you are like many people, media and technology have likely become constant companions. You wake up to the radio, there’s news on your smartphone, you hear it on your drive to work, you unconsciously view news sites on your computer, it’s on the radio again during dinner, it’s on the TV or your computer during the evening. Your brain and its poor little amygdala don't stand a chance! Low-grade anxiety will likely arrive, and your view of the world will become negatively skewed, and your overall health is degrading. So step one, look at ways of reducing media consumption. Second - Create Media Free Zones Consider media free zones. As a start, get all media out of the bedrooms. Make the bedroom a sanctuary from all the crazy noise out there. No computers, smartphones or iPads. Replace these things with great books. Quality sleep is critical. Without it, your mental, physical, emotional and professional life will suffer. Third. - Keep Dinner Tech-Free Make the dinner table a media and technology free zone. That doesn’t mean you don’t talk about current affairs. In fact, that would be a very good idea. It prompts you to discuss current events in a more substantive way than the five-second sound bites offered by the media, and it’s a great way to build those meaningful relationships. When you go out for dinner, keep the phone in your jacket. The calls and messages can wait. Forth - Work More Wisely At work, consider media free zones. Start having meetings and discussions that involve no technology. This approach will lead to less distraction, and maybe your discussions will be more productive. When in a presentation put the phone away. Show some courtesy to the presenter, and maybe you'll learn something. When in a board meeting leave your phone in your office. Direct your full attention to the discussion. Maybe you'll learn something and make a contribution. Fifth - People First In your conversations with people, make it a point to ignore the technology. The e-mails and calls will still be there when you've completed the interaction. Nothing affirms people more than placing your entire focus on them when in conversation. When going out for dinner, eating meals with family or going out for coffee with a friend put the phone away. Break your habit of having to get your dopamine fix by being on your phone all the time. Use these times to focus on people and relationships – not the phone That concludes this edition of the take charge of change podcast. I hope you found this content helpful. Achieve Balance in Your Personal and Professional Life

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 3, 2016 4:25

Is work-life balance actually possible? In this edition of the Take Charge of Change podcast, we'll discuss the concept of work-life balance. Is the prevailing perspective on work-life balance a fairytale - I'm going to share a perspective that fits with the real world. The other day I was reading the book "Resilience" by the author Eric Greitens. He had a wonderful perspective on the whole notion of work-life balance. It's an important topic because we often find ourselves overwhelmed by the daily grind of keeping all of our commitments balanced. To truly find the balance sweet spot, it's critical that we look at balance as more about maintaining momentum than the idealized notion of everything in its place as we experience calm and tranquility. In the real world, balance is a lot like learning to ride a bike. Kids don't find their balance by sitting on a bike standing still but by riding a bike that's rolling. A lumberjack competing in a log roll contest doesn't find balance by standing still but by running on the log. So finding work-life balance is much like riding a bike or balancing on a log - it's about being in motion - it's not static. So Let's try to link this to the practical day-to-day of our lives. Many of us will spend the majority of our waking hours working. It's a huge part of what we do and seeps into almost every aspect of our lives. It's virtually impossible to separate your vocation from your personal life. Work and personal life are not two separate areas that compete with each other. They are areas that need to be effectively integrated with each other. If you experience professional fulfillment , that's going to radiate through your whole life and if you experience great relationships, the positive side effects of those great relationships will radiate through your professional life in a positive way. There's no way of getting around this integration. In fact, balancing work and all the other aspects of your life is really like being a conductor in a symphony. Some areas are stronger than others and then sometimes others reseed and others become stronger - it's a fluid process. There is an Old Testament verse that hits this notion wonderfully,  "to everything there are a season and a time to every purpose under heaven."  Our lives are constantly in a state of flow – daily, yearly and throughout the seasons of life. Yes, we need to think deeply and plan for our families, important relationships, our hobbies, our downtime, and of course our professions. But these are not separate rooms. The interplay between each area is the rich symphony of life and you are the conductor who needs to direct the ebb and flow of each are. We live a life of balance, by understanding the importance of momentum and to see life as a symphony, not a seesaw. I hope you enjoyed this edition of the Take Charge of Change podcast. Get the eBook!  http://takechargeofchange.com/buy-the-book/ Welcome to this edition of the Take Charge of Change podcast. We live in a world of calculation, systems and logic. And yet, as human beings we are wired to relate to stories and to be motivated and inspired by stories. In this edition of the podcast we will explore the power of story. Stories play a huge role in our lives but most of the time we are not conscious of their impact. Without your personal and community stories you will have a loss of context.  You lose the necessary maps to properly understand your world. To harness the power of story in your own life you need to look at your life as a quest. A journey with meaning. It's our life journey that reveals meaning. Eric Greitens, in his wonderful book “Resilience” discusses this concept. He says, "you figure out the purpose of your life by living your life. You give meaning to your quest by what you do and say and suffer. The challenges you face and the choices you make create the meaning of your story. The harms, dangers, temptations, and distractions that confront you are obstacles, yes, but it's only by wrestling with those obstacles that your purpose can be understood." This is important because knowing our history can make us more resilient. This means being intentional about reflecting on our past victories, past life lessons and relationships we've had and currently have, and how these relationships provide us with strength, wisdom and support. A strong sense of the past, cultivated by reliving our stories, make us stronger and helps us to deal with the hardships of the present. We need to write the stories down and go back to them on a regular basis because it's so easy to forget them. Reflect on your stories and be strengthened before challenges emerge. These are not only stories that relate to your personal life but stories that could be helpful to your business, your volunteer organizations and your family. Each sphere of your life should have helpful stories that embed  wisdom and encouragement. Storytelling is not just about remembering what happened but trying to understand and effectively learn from what happened. Writing , drawing and then explaining are great ways to process the events of our lives and to help us build story’s. As well, other peoples stories help to give us role models for storytelling and building powerful narratives. Resolve now to begin building into your schedule a regular time for reflection and journaling so that you can capture the powerful stories that you experience, both in your personal life and in the life of your family, and of the people you collaborate with professionally. Discomfort Makes You Stronger

Welcome to this edition of the Take Charge of Change podcast.  Today we'll look about discomfort and how discomfort is a critical factor in the formation of strong character a prerequisite for building professional and personal resilience You know, when you think about it, if nature hadn't tested us we wouldn't have developed ways to protect ourselves against the forces of nature and to build convenience and more hospitable living environments. Now despite these modern conveniences, life today, in some respects, is similar to what is used to be. And what I mean is, the bad things we experience in our daily lives can make us stronger and can prepare us to be more able to deal with similar problems in the future. Two thousand years ago the Stoic philosophers Seneca, and Marcus Aurelius proposed imposing mild self discomfort to prepare themselves for inevitable adversity that would arrive in our lives and to develop more appreciation for the blessings we often take for granted. Most people have heightened levels of self-discipline when things are going well. But during times of trial and adversity our discipline muscles are pushed to the limits. In advance of challenge, it's important  to increase your capacity to deal with challenges by introducing mild discomforts and incremental challenge into our life. If we do this, we are more apt not to be taken off course when challenges of a significant nature hit our lives.  So what are some things you can do to introduce discomfort into your life to make yourself stronger? Well, consider taking a five minute cold shower as a way of growing your discomfort muscle. What about fasting. Do you think you would be uncomfortable going without eating for one or two days? Of course you would. Not only can this discipline make your interior strength stronger but you will more fully appreciate the blessings of great food that's all around you.  Take an inventory. What are the circumstances or situations that cause you to falter. And two, who are the people or things or circumstances that can potentially make you stronger?  Brainstorm ideas that create inconvenience and discomfort. Consider introducing them into your life to make you more resilient – walk to work instead of driving – go camping in the wilderness – go without technology for today – live like a miser for a week - stop your morning coffee for a week – intentionally engage with difficult people at work By introducing these challenges into your week you will begin to inoculate yourself. You can become stronger in advance of more serious challenges that come your way. I hope you enjoyed this edition of the Take Charge of Change podcast. Welcome to this edition of the Take Charge of Change podcast. In this podcast we'll talk about the cultivation of freedom and what true freedom really means in the context of our personal and professional lives.   It's fun to be creative and to be free and without constraints. Yet ironically, creativity happens in the context of discipline and order. You can have freedom from rules but if you don't have mastery over yourself, how creative can you actually be? Now at times, all of us can be a slave to something; lust, laziness, envy, greed, and pride. However, If we are not careful, these things can take over and diminish us unless we strive for self-mastery. The freedom to create is often the result of years of resilient practice and discipline. And of course, it's not as if you submit to discipline once and never have to do it again. Excellence is renewed through deliberate practice and discipline day in and day out. Freedom or lack of it is influenced more by what we do for and to ourselves than what others do to us. At the end of the day, most of us can make ourselves freer and more effective through self-mastery. We all have times when our commitments feel heavy.  So the take away is that creativity and freedom are natural benefits that flow out of daily structure, order and discipline. Kind of interesting. Ironically, if there is a lack of discipline order and structure in your life, don't expect freedom and creativity to manifest in your personal and professional life The writer needs to sit at their writing table everyday The artist needs to clean their brushes The entrepreneur needs to manage staff and Cash flow Freedom on the road requires obedience to traffic laws Financial freedom requires consistency and self-restraint http://takechargeofchange.com/buy-the-book/

Welcome to this edition of the Take Charge of Change podcast. In this podcast we are going to discuss resilient leadership. Leadership is rooted in resilient living. Great leaders demonstrate that they have a devotion to the cause and the people, not just the perks and the privilege. A leader earns devotion by showing and acting with devotion. What are some examples: – Officers eat last and lead from the front – Great leaders don't ask of their staff more than they are prepared to do – Great leaders lead with humility and can check their egos at the door – Great leaders are open to the wisdom of others In an age of corruption, spinning the facts, and a hyper focus on the individual, these kinds of sediments seem very old-fashioned. But true leadership is about both your internal worlds and your external worlds lining up so you live a life of integrity. You don't have to say to those around you that you live a life of integrity – the people you lead see it and will be inspired to follow you to achieve the important purposes and objectives that you are leading them towards. Pain, challenge, frustration. Three words that we don't like dealing with on a regular basis. And yet, many business leaders confirm that one of the most important characteristics for long-term personal and business success relates to your ability to deal productively with the inevitable frustrations, pain and inertia that comes up in everyday life. In part one of a two-part podcast series, we discuss the role that pain plays in our lives, a new way of looking at pain, and how pain and frustration can actually be harnessed to help us. Reflections are drawn from the great book Resilience by Eric Greiten and the philosophy handed down through the ages from the Stoic philosophers.   For additional information on building professional and personal resilience be sure to download our free e-book The Resilient Professional.   http://takechargeofchange.com/buy-the-book/

In this podcast we're going to talk about the connection between Excellence & Practice It's natural for us to not to want to work hard. It's against our nature. Most people default to the path of least resistance. However, there is no doubt that Excellence only comes from persistent and intentional practice. As well, it's important to understand the difference between how to do something and practicing. The art of learning is how we learn to do something. Practice is the art of attaining excellence in something. Ask yourself a couple of questions, “What have your formal education and experiences taught you over the years? Now ask the most important question, “Are there any areas that through diligent, purposeful and intentional practice you have become truly excellent?” If the answer is no, then there may be professional and personal opportunities that you are missing out on. Professional success will be accelerated when you seek to develop competencies that are truly excellent and separate you from the pack! I’ve worked in the wealth planning industry for over 30 years, and over that time I've become convinced that there is a correlation between physical, mental and relational health and a family’s income and net worth. Over the years we have come to associate the word philosophy with irrelevant lectures during our University years. What’s unfortunate about this notion is that fact that the study and application of philosophy was intended to solve real world problems. There is much we can learn from the works of Seneca, Marcus Aurelius and Epictetus. When you read their works from 2000 years ago it’s as if they were written yesterday. In this edition of the Take Charge of Change podcast, we will share reflections on Philosophy from the Book Resilience written by Eric Greiten’s.
