Del Sol's relationship with Susan Moffat began as a chance encounter at a spontaneous street performance during the pandemic. SynopsisOn today's date in 1908, the Hoffman String Quartet gave a recital at Boston's Potter Hall, opening their program with a Romantic classic, Robert Schumann's String Quartet from 1842, followed by much more modern fare — Debussy's String Quartet written in 1893.And to close their program, the Hoffman Quartet premiered a brand-new contemporary work: a piano quintet by American composer Amy Beach, with the composer at the piano.The Boston Globe's critic noted “the audience was of goodly proportions and very demonstrative in its appreciation of Mrs. Beach's composition,” but (critics being critics), did a little nit-picking, concluding, “The work is thoroughly good, though a little too choppy at times.” The critic from The Boston Evening Transcript had fewer nits to pick, writing: “The quintet begins in the luminous key of F-sharp minor, and throughout Mrs. Beach modulates freely … [she] has sought a modern sonority of utterance … Her rhythms spurred the ear, and her harmonies [have] tang and fancy … In imagination, feeling, and expression, it is distinctly rhapsodic. In this episode, Dave and Andrew return to the venerable string quartet for a piece that mixes tonality, modernist music, Baroque dances, and Medieval modality. But will this mixture work for them? How do we learn from the past to change the future? This bonus is an excerpt of Charlton's interview with Matthew Ozawa, stage director for the New York premiere of Angel Island at BAM produced by Beth Morrison Productions. In this clip, Matthew shares how his first experience on Angel Island and personal family history inspired the staging of the Prototype Festival staging. And Charlton describes how this project has shifted his own relationship to the energy of the Immigration Station detention barracks. One of the complexities of Angel Island by Huang Ruo is that vocal parts are alternately in English and Chinese. For American choral groups, who are familiar with practicing Italian, German, French, and Latin diction, Chinese is not a common language with which they often have experience. And for this project, it was important to get it right. This bonus is an excerpt of Charlton's interview with Sidney Chen of Volti. Volti is the vocal ensemble that was instrumental in the development and world premiere of Angel Island. In this clip, they are discussing the nuances of Chinese language, phonetics, and coaching the ensemble through the oratorio's text.  They also share stories about both Charlton's and Sid's personal relationship to learning Mandarin Chinese. There is nothing like hearing a Late Beethoven String Quartet for the first time. Beethoven's late string quartets, Op. 127, Op. 130, Op. 131, Op. 132, and Op. 135, are among the 5 greatest pieces of music ever written for any combination of instruments. They reach a kind of cosmic understanding of the world that is unparalleled, and they remain the Mount Everest of every string quartet's repertoire. The quartet we're going to be talking about today, Op. 135, is slightly the outlier from the set, in that it is less expansive, slightly less complex, and as Misha Amory from the Brentano String Quartet says, “it is the work of a composer who seems to have suddenly attained some new, simple truth after miles of struggle.” Op. 135 is Beethoven's last completed work, and as this year begins, I thought I would check off number 2 of 5 Late Beethoven Quartets with this work that seems to exist on another plane of existence entirely. It is a piece of great depth and sadness, and also of ecstasy and lightness. It is a piece of great seriousness that is also full of a sense of humor that is rare in Beethoven. It contains one of the greatest slow movements ever written, a movement that would inspire one of Mahler's greatest symphonic movements, and it also features a zany and wild scherzo movement that could have been written two weeks ago. In short, Beethoven's Op. 135 has it all. Join us as we go through this masterpiece together!

41 Jahre nach seinem ersten Auftritt in «Musik für einen Gast» ist Stephan Braun erneut Gast in dieser Sendung. Aus dem Studenten der Veterinärmedizin ist ein gestandener Tierarzt geworden. Sein Musikgeschmack hingegen gleich dem von 1983 immer noch: Erlesen und anspruchsvoll. Das hat mit Stephan Brauns Sozialisation zu tun. Im Alter von fünf Jahren besucht er zum ersten Mal ein klassisches Konzert und will daraufhin Cellist werden. Rasch lernt er das Instrument und hätte auch das Zeug, Musiker zu werden, entscheidet sich aber dann doch für ein Studium. Nach drei Jahren in der Forschung wird er Tierarzt und übernimmt eine Praxis im Zürcher Oberland. Die Musik begleitet ihn aber weiterhin. Sei es als Hörer von Klassik, Rock und Funk, sei es als Vater dreier Kinder, von denen zwei immer noch Berufsmusiker sind. Die Zeit als Tierarzt ist mittlerweile vorbei. Seit September ist er pensioniert und hat zum ersten Mal im Leben keinen Plan, wie er sagt. Alles ist offen. Ein faszinierendes Lebensgefühl. Gut möglich aber, dass er sich bald wieder für eine neue Aufgabe entscheidet. Falls dem so ist, wird er sie mit genauso viel Leidenschaft anpacken, wie er es immer getan hat in seinem Leben.
