Disabled by cerebral palsy, Dom leads from a position of personal experience, empowering him to be effective.While the organization doesn't have a policy to only hire people with disabilities, by making the workplace attractive to them, he's built a team comprising people with that lived experience and perspective.Dom shared some of the tactics used to create an appealing workplace. They include unlimited PTO. “We have it unlimited for a reason. If people need to take care of themselves, they take care of themselves.”“We have a very progressive parental leave policy,” he says. New Disabled South offers “a year of parental leave– that's six months fully paid, full time off, and six months part-time hours fully paid.”In addition, the organization offers a robust insurance package that includes life, vision, dental, and health. “Also, we're a remote organization; we support our employees, making sure they have a comfortable place to work,” Dom says.A final aspect of the hiring practice is a four-day, 32-hour work week that allows people time to rest and enjoy life as well as work.This broad, employee-friendly policy grew out of Dom's superpower: empathy.AI Episode Summary1. It helped him to better understand the human connections between people.“I have seen a lack of empathy take down leaders and organizations,” Dom says. “It is something I just go back to often and remind myself to use my empathy as a strength.”Dom shared a story of a time when feeling and manifesting empathy was a challenge but also particularly important, and he could lean on this strength to help a friend.I was in a job that I was feeling frustrated with. It wasn't a good fit. The boss that I had didn't have a whole lot of empathy. He said some things to me–my wife and I were doing some work at the border at the time to help refugees, doing some organizing. At the time, he said something like, “I wish you cared as much about my business as you do about refugees at the border.” It was frustrating because I felt I was working hard. At the same time, it highlighted some misalignment for me.So, I share that because I was feeling frustrated, I was feeling afraid I was going to lose my job, or I was going to quit my job.At the time, we had a couple of friends who came to live with us as refugees from Honduras. When I got home that day, one of them had found out he had got a bad diagnosis and shared it with us. I got to put my stuff aside, be there for him and his partner, and be supportive and listen. It affirmed my commitment to that work. What wound up happening was I lost that job, and it wound up being the best thing that ever happened to me because I wouldn't be down this path that I'm on now. But my ability to put that aside and be there for someone who needed it put it into focus and put things into perspective and made me realign with my values and what was important to me. I showed up in that moment for someone who needed me.Dom offers a few tips for developing your empathy.“Take the cotton out of your ears and put it in your mouth,” he says. “Empathy is just sitting and listening to another person, not having to speak, not having to interject unless it's needed or asked for.”By following Dom's example and advice, you can strengthen your empathy. With practice, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. She continues to perform jazz music and participate in theatre productions as a performer and director. Outside of her studies, Ashleigh was very active on campus as a leader in many capacities. With the support of the university, Ashleigh brought organizations like the Black Student Association and Best Buddies to the campus community. She was employed in the Diversity and Inclusion Office as a student ambassador, and was awarded the university award for Outstanding Student for her commitment to including others.As a young adult, Ashleigh has been active with Gamma Phi Beta, OCU Student Foundation, Relay for Life, The Children's Center Rehabilitation Hospital, Oklahoma United Methodist Conference, New Leaders Council, Oklahoma Miss Amazing, KidsAlive!, Konnect HQ, Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma, and was awarded The Inasmuch Foundation Student Fellowship.Ashleigh is honored to be representing the great state of Oklahoma at the Miss America competition in December of 2021. She has already received over $65,000 in scholarships through competing in Miss Oklahoma and Miss America competitions, even having lost more competitions than she has won. Briona “Bri” Jenkins (she/her/hers) is a 31-year-old Black, queer woman changing the world while living in Austin, TX by empowering people to own their stories through vulnerability. Given the title, “The love child of Oprah, Beyonce, and Michelle Obama,” Briona Jenkins is a public speaker, activist for the LGBTQIA+, female, and people of color communities, and has years of experience using her platform to evoke change.Originally from Hamden, Connecticut, Bri attended Albertus Magnus College, in New Haven, CT., which is where she completed her undergrad as a Sociology major with a concentration in Social Work.Since October 2019, she hosts a podcast called The Tea with Bri where she sits and chats with a different guest every week about whatever topic the guest chooses. On December 4, 2019, she won the Austin LGBT Chamber of Commerce ‘Rising Star Award'.  Released in February 2020, she was the subject for a documentary entitled, “Uncomfortable Spaces”. In May 2021, she was awarded the Premier Achievement Award from her Alma Mater, Albertus Magnus College. When not at work Bri is very involved in the Austin community. She has served on a number of boards. In June 2021, she joined the board of Random Acts and is currently finishing out her second term as Co-Director of  New Leaders Council's Austin Chapter Board, and has served on the boards of Keep Austin Fed, Austin Black Pride, and Lone Star Victims Advocacy Project. She also appears on panels and stages all over the city and has spoken at the 2020 Women's March Rally in Austin, BossBabe's Annual State of the Uterus event, Texas State Business Week, on a virtual SXSWEdu panel, and two GISH panels about Racial Equality & Justice. 

Natasha is a foster mom who welcomes teens and tweens into her home. She was selected for the national New Leaders Council to advance her work of foster care advocacy through Just As Special and was also selected for House of Pod's podcast incubator where she won funding for Just As Special's pilot season. Before launching Just As Special, Natasha founded the digital marketing company, Pulse Perfect Consulting, where she worked with many of Colorado's movers and shakers including Rocky Mountain PBS, Denver Public Schools, and Colorado Succeeds. Natasha is also a published poet and enjoys running in Colorado's foothills.

In addition to those tasks, Sarah has served on a number of committees and advisory councils responsible for developing policy at the local, state, and federal levels. Today is a really fun episode of Midwest Misfits. We bring to you a discussion on our most recent Book Club pick, Untamed by Glennon Doyle. Joining Colleen and I are our favorite pod friends Portia Burch, Marti Carrington, and Beaufield Berry-Fisher. Beaufield Berry-Fisher has an upcoming podcast debuting Feb. 7 called "Say Her Name" paying tribute to Black Women whose lives ended too soon by law enforcement. Beaufield is a playwright, podcaster, content creator, activist, and (most importantly) a mother. Beaufield is currently the Performing Arts Editor at The Reader and Resident playwright at Creighton University. Her last play Red Summer premiered at the Bluebarn Theater, taking on Omaha's tragic history of racial violence and the mob lynching of William Brown. Her next production In The Upper Room (Oneill 2018 Finalist) will be produced at the Denver Performing Arts Center in 2022. While living through the pandemic, with three small kids, Beaufield started the Village Co-Op, an alternative to traditional and remote schooling that allows families to survive and children to flourish in their early (and odd) first years in school. Beaufield lives in Omaha with her husband Rob and babies, Shine, Oscar and Georgia Pearl. Portia Burch is a Black queer activist and Omaha native, with a specific focus on anti-oppression. Portia was activated by the murder of Michael Brown, Jr. and the subsequent protests and riots in Ferguson, MO. As consciousness shifts towards reckoning with racism and white supremacy in the world, Portia is working to create a just and brave space in the training and development industry. Portia also has a focus on the aftercare of those that have been system impacted, as well as the fight for prison abolition. She believes that by addressing the systems of oppression that lead to incarceration, change can be made at the forefront. She works to amplify resources surrounding mental health care, safe and affordable housing, and employment assistance that are necessary solutions. Marti Carrington is an Iowa transplant who has called Omaha her home for 20 years. Marti is a lifelong learner, centering joy and liberation in her life. She has a passion for changing organizational culture from the inside out, believing this can be done in partnership with activism, political change, and social reconstruction. Marti's consulting firm, Equity Nerd, partners with HR professionals, organizational leadership, and executives to develop a culture of trust and safety for everyone. This involves the "nerdy" work of creating equitable policies and procedures, developing handbooks and materials that reflect the company's values and empowers employees, training and coaching, and creating a culture of feedback. Marti serves as the Board Chair for Omaha Girls Rock, serves on the Leadership Team for The Women’s Fund of Omaha Circles, was selected as a 2021 Fellow for New Leaders Council, and is Chair of the Douglas County Democratic Party Women’s Caucus. Resources The Richard Fowler Show Intro A coalition of the United States Department of Justice and 11 mostly red states announced Tuesday that they filed a new antitrust lawsuit against Google because of its search dominance. The complaint accuses Google of engaging in a number of anti-competitive practices. One of them is Apple’s exclusive relationship with Google that allows Google’s search engine to be the default in Apple’s Safari browser. The Wall Street Journal reports that some estimates place the cost to Google for this relationship at $11 billion, comprising some 20% of Apple’s total revenue.   A key piece of evidence here was a 2018 email from a top Apple executive telling his counterpart at Google, “Our vision is that we work as if we are one company.” Neither company has released the name of the executive who sent that email. But I am just beside myself trying to figure out, and I’m really trying to empathize with the person who sent it, why, out of all of the things they could have put in writing, why they wrote the absolute worst thing they could possibly think of.    This was a high-level interaction with a competitor in which anticompetitive pitfalls were blatantly obvious. The first thing on this executive’s mind should have been to avoid an appearance of impropriety at all costs, especially given the discourse here in Washington about both companies’ market dominance and bipartisan support for regulating tech companies.   These executives are supposed to be the best and brightest, right? But this is just basic antitrust law and policy. A high-ranking executive in a company like Apple should know it. It’s just basic. It’s not hard.   I cannot help but wonder if the executive here was a person of color. Forgive me if I sound harsh. But companies like Apple use their purported inability to find qualified diverse talent as an excuse to justify the sheer lack of diversity in their executive ranks. I really want to know how someone, who is supposed to be so superior to everyone else who competed for their job, could make such a dumb mistake.    I’m not saying this person should be fired. Everyone makes mistakes. But for a company that seems so invested in meritocracy, I, like many of you, can’t help but wonder 1) was this executive a person of color, and; 2) how did the company respond to this? Are they treating it as an isolated, forgivable incident, or, are they are globalizing it, making a value judgment about the executive’s overall intelligence?   I’m not saying it’s right. I’m not even saying it’s healthy to think this way. I’m just saying it crossed my mind.    And I won’t even get into Jeffrey Toobin.

Recognized for his advocacy, Nick served a term as a member of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, State Advisory Council after being nominated by U.S. Senator Jack Reed. Locally, he has served as a board member at Times Squared Academy, a charter school dedicated to teaching STEM-related programs, and the Paul Cuffee Charter School. He is also a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Nick Figueroa was awarded by the Women’s Resource Center in Newport, Rhode Island with the prestigious "Men Who Make A Difference Award" in 2017. Additionally, he is a co-founding member of the Latino Policy Institute at Roger Williams University and the Rhode Island chapter of the New Leaders Council. Nick holds a Master of Arts in Education from the University of Rhode Island. He completed his undergraduate work in Public Administration at Roger Williams University.

TOP TAKEAWAYS Our names hold immense power - they’re not just a collection of sounds, they’re a representation of our identity.  When someone gets your name wrong, you almost become a different person. Growing up between two cultures is not unusual in the US - but it’s particularly tough on teenage children of immigrants when they and their families don’t get access to the unspoken “Culture Code” of how to succeed in the dominant culture. If you interact with someone with an “unusual name” (and really, what’s unusual? But we digress.), taking the time to ask them how they’d like it pronounced and PRACTICE getting it right is one fundamental part of creating psychological safety and true inclusion in any space.  By getting it wrong (especially repeatedly), you telegraph that you don’t care.  Don’t be that person. All languages have a “library” of sounds within them - often where we trip up on names is when they include sounds that our lips, teeth, and tongue aren’t used to.  The good news is that you can learn how to make these sounds - it’ll just take some practice! Jonathan Richardson is a Communications and Special Projects Officer and will be working on communications, impact reporting, and special initiatives. Jonathan has over 8 years of communications and development experience. He is the current President of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Hudson Mohawk Chapter and was recently awarded AFP Global's 2019 Oustanding Young Professional Fundraiser. Richardson is active in his community and passionate about professional development, community change, and social justice. One of his most notable achievements is the creation of the Emerging Nonprofit Leadership Accelerator program, which works to attract rising leaders working at New York Capital Region nonprofits and provide them resources, support and a network to succeed and stay in the sector. Richardson also serves on the board of Mission Accomplished Transition Services and the Capital District Chapter of the New Leaders Council. He earned his Master of Social Work and Master of Public Administration degrees at University at Albany, SUNY, focusing on nonprofit management and social welfare policy. Julio Casado '08 studied Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University, received a Master’s degree in Management from the Harvard University Extension School, and is a 2018 Fellow of the New Leaders Council. He was born in Dominican Republic, grew up in Harlem, and is proud to call the Bronx home. Today's guest is my friend Nick Melvoin. Nick has spent his career fighting for our city’s schoolchildren. He believes that together, with the right leadership, we can ensure that every student in Los Angeles has the opportunity to succeed. Born and raised on the Westside of LA, Nick served as a seventh and eighth grade English teacher at Markham Middle School, an LAUSD campus in Watts, where he coached soccer and baseball and helped his students launch a school newspaper. At Markham, he saw firsthand how LAUSD failed to support schools and neglected the needs of our city’s most vulnerable students. When he and two-thirds of Markham’s teachers lost their jobs due to budget cuts, he fought to be re-hired and worked to end the indiscriminate, seniority-based teacher layoffs that harm so many LA families. As a teacher, Nick joined the ACLU, Mayors Riordan and Villaraigosa, and others to bring a ground-breaking civil rights lawsuit which argued that LA’s layoffs violated the rights of students. They won. Nick holds a Bachelor’s degree from Harvard University, a Masters in Urban Education from Loyola Marymount University (LMU), and a law degree from the New York University School of Law, where he was a Root-Tilden-Kern Scholar. In addition to serving as a teacher, Nick has worked in the Obama White House with the Domestic Policy Council and the US Attorney’s office where he took part in various civil rights investigations as a legal clerk. Today, Nick leads and facilitates efforts by students, parents, teachers, and community members to rethink and shape the future of our city’s schools. He is also an adjunct professor at LMU where he teaches teachers how to improve their own advocacy in the classroom. In working for nonprofits such as Teach Plus and Educators 4 Excellence, Nick helps to improve the support teachers across the state receive before and during their time in the classroom, as well as amplify teacher voice in policy-making. Nick serves on the boards of the Los Angeles County Young Democrats, Brentwood Community Council, Teach For America Associates, University Synagogue's Social Justice Committee, and United in Harmony. He is a graduate of the Jewish Federation’s New Leaders Project and the New Leaders Council and chairs the Jewish Federation’s Educators’ Network. Nick is also proud to serve as a director of Camp Harmony, a camp for homeless and underserved children. “We have to show up and we have to apply for things outside [Indian Country]. There is no one better than us to than to represent at the national level.” Chelsea Wilson (Cherokee Nation) works at All Native Group, a division of Ho-Chunk Inc. She is active in the DC chapter of the New Leaders Council a member of the executive committee and is a previous fellow with the organization. If a full-time job and a one organization was not enough, Chelsea Wilson also chairs the Frontrunners Committee of the organization She Should Run. Chelsea Wilson describes herself as a giver, and if you cannot tell, she puts that into practice through the work she does personally and professionally. That character trait pays dividends back to Chelsea through the mentorships she’s developed over the years. And each mentorship helped Chelsea develop and find new ways to give back. It’s a classic story about how hard work, mentorship, and networks come together to provide opportunities to grow personally and professionally. Chelsea worked for the Cherokee Nation where her boss mentored her and gave her projects to stretch her development. Eventually that led her to DC. I knew Chelsea’s boss at Cherokee Nation and she mentioned to me Chelsea’s interest in moving to DC. When I ran into her at a reception, that a “pushy friend” forced her to attend, I mentioned that I was looking to hire someone for my team. After living in DC, Chelsea found her path through NLC and She Should Run. It’s refreshing to have someone that can articulate that their interest to serve in public office comes from a genuine place of giving. Many people say it, and for many people it’s true. But with Chelsea, you can feel her desire to serve. In this conversation we discuss finding finding mentors the right way, growing professionally, and being willing to fail by trying. Chelsea Wilson combined each of these into her current work and others are starting to take notice.
