Sundiata Salaam is a people-centered educator with over a decade of experience who is dedicated to nurturing lifelong leaders who seek to transform the classroom and the world. Sundiata began his career teaching Eighth-grade English in Capitol Heights, MD. His interest in building supportive and holistic learning communities led him to Memphis, TN, serving as Freedom Prep's founding Dean of Students in 2009. With an understanding that the curriculum is the entire environment of learning — from the teachers' attitudes to the school's values to the socio-emotional supports — Sundiata was a dean focused on high expectations for the entire school community. In 2014, he was promoted to Chief Schools Officer, and then moved into a Chief People Officer role two years later. Sundiata received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and a Master of Arts degree in Pan-African Studies from Syracuse University. In 2023 Salaam founded Ubuntu Leadership Institute, with a goal to create the atmosphere where future leaders are always asking themselves: “What impact am I having on the whole?” Our hope is that our future leaders have/develop a compassionate heart and a critical mind as the foundation for school leadership. This week, we're sharing a presentation from the 2023 Another Carolina Anarchist Bookfair in so-called Asheville, NC. From the presentation: The Mediterranean Sea is Europe's deadliest border. For years, non-state actors like Sea-Watch and other NGO's have played a part in humanitarian search-and-rescue operations. In spite of legal repression and the technical challenges of maintaining a “civil fleet”, anarchists, anti-fascists, and other activists try to stop needless death at sea. Hear a report back from a wayward American yacht-punk who spent the summer doing rotations on two different SAR (Search And Rescue) ships. We'll discuss the general political situation, the reality of everyday operations and how you could get involved. One case Quoyle mentioned was the Luventa Crew in Italy, they were acquitted of all charges in April of 2024! For more audios from ACABookfair 2023, check out the site. To hear a 2023 interview we conducted with an activist with Maldusa on a similar topic, you can find it at our website. We also have this 2016 interview by A-Radio Berlin that we aired in 2016 about conditions  a No Border Camp in Greece. And here's one we conducted with an immigrant from Africa and a supporter in Germany in 2016. Also, check out this podcast called The Civil Fleet with voices of others involved in solidarity in the Mediterranean route. Announcement Sundiata Jawanza Mail Tampering? The 28208 zip code in Charlotte, NC, including the Lakeview neighborhood, is one of the city's areas with significant economic challenges. Residents born in this neighborhood have less than a 5% chance of transitioning out of poverty into the middle class. Originally established as a mill village for white workers in the late 1930s, Lakeview became predominantly Black in the late 1960s due to urban renewal and white flight. Today, the community faces ongoing challenges, including issues of trust, gentrification, and a lack of meaningful engagement. Jamaal Kinard and Adrian Sundiata from the Lakeview Neighborhood Alliance (LNA) join us to discuss their efforts to improve the quality of life in the Lakeview neighborhood. You'll Hear: (05:49) The origins of Lakeview as an exclusive park and neighborhood to its transformation and renaming, and how these shifts have impacted the residents' identity and unity. (13:35) Why the Lakeview community has faced significant socio-economic challenges and what short-term and long-term efforts are being taken to address them. (23:50) How the Lakeview Neighborhood Alliance rebuilds trust within the community and creates a solidarity economy. (41:03) How the gift card program has evolved from a pandemic response into a tool for financial education and empowerment, serving nearly 170 residents in 2024. (45:36) Why immediate relief should be balanced with advocating for systemic solutions like universal basic income and housing reform rather than relying solely on nonprofit efforts. There are a lot of epic tales that feature this theme, and it provides a great opportunity to send the hero on some sort of journey, where they can encounter monsters and challenges and all the exciting conflicts that make a story! We'll start with Sundiata Keita, a hero of the Mandinka people, and then explore a few other heroes from around the world. Once again, we have the great honor of having Dr. Sundiata Soon-Jahta on our podcast! This time, we talk about how social justice movements can often perpetuate the very systems of oppression and power-over dynamics that we're trying to walk away from, resulting in what Dr. Sundiata shares is a system archetype called a “feedback loop”. The solution? Well, as a systems thinker and anti-oppression organizer, Dr. Sundiata suggests that we all engage in some serious inner work. He believes that change is fractal and when we change within, it affects our outside reality and those around us. So, instead of feeling disempowered by all the injustice we see in our world, we can empower ourselves to be the very change we dream of and show up for our young people, families and communities in the ways we truly strive to. ~ You can find all of Dr. Sundiata's work including his Theory of Indivisibility and other think pieces and resources mentioned in the episode here: https://drsundiata.com https://drsundiata.com/blog/ And if you enjoy what you hear, please consider supporting Dr. Sundiata's work here: https://www.patreon.com/LiveIndivisible/posts

Before the podcast leaves Mali, I will address two allegations of plagiarism leveled at Disney. The first and weaker of the two claims is that Disney stole large parts of Mali's national epic, "The Epic of Sundiata," in creating the plot of the mega-hit "The Lion King."The second is about one of the film's signature songs, "The Lion Sleeps Tonight." The original version was written in 1939 by a South African man named Solomon Linda, who was paid pennies for the recording and died destitute, while American renditions of his song brought in millions. The episode also highlights the battle against Disney that Linda's daughters have been waging to access missing royalties and have Solomon Linda's name recognized as the original composer. Also, be ready for an insightful convo about an Instagram post where Ieishah Clelland (our Season 7 Co-Producer) questioned gentle parenting as a privilege. Akilah cites Dr. Sundiata's distinction between dialogue and discussion as we question our relationship with understanding, and with discomfort. So much goodness in here! Pull out your pause pad and join us.Madd Question Askin' Understanding Essay for people committed to Raising Free PeopleThere is a link between Understanding and control, and in our efforts to become more partner-centered parents and caregivers,we've got to look into that link.Control is not inherently a negative thing, but when control is our goal and we don't even realize it,we can demand things from childrenin the name of understanding, when really what we're after is a sense of control.Control is comforting.Control feels like certainty, yet comfort and certainty aren't always what's needed in a relationship. Is it a child's job to be controllable? Is it a child's job to give us a sense of certainty? How do we impact children when we don't understand something they do?And how much of our need to understand is tied to our desire to feellike we're in control and we're sure about what's going on?When are my efforts to control a child appropriate?and when are they more about my lack of understanding? Here's a resource for working through the questions and feelings you will face as you let yourself ask better questions:Restorative Justice and Conscious Parenting workshop. Happening Sunday, May 1st. Be ready for interactive exercises and group discussions, where we'll learn the roots of restorative justice work, the basics of the restorative process, and how this supports your conscious parenting process, harm caused by supremacy culture, and other oppressive systems.Discomfort is a significant part of understandingShout out to Ieishah who put this on the table and made us inquire about our relationship to discomfort. Ieishah reflects on conscious parenting and gentle parenting. Is our capacity for gentle parenting or to treat humans like humans impacted by our access to resources? Is gentle parenting a privilege?“Wake me when we're done using terms like gentle/conscious/respectful parenting as descriptors for "doing our best to treat vulnerable humans like humans." - Ieishah ClellandCheck out the full Show Notes and the Liberation Walk for this episode at https://www.raisingfreepeople.com/249/Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/akilah)

I'm not like that”. - DomariIn this episode, you'll notice that we're just getting the hang of the tech for this new format—but you'll still get a feel for what these listening parties are about!Every other Monday, we'll be at it again, so join Domari and Akilah as live audience members (no video necessary)! The next Listening Party is Monday, April 18th at 1 PM Eastern. We LOVE feedbackWe listened to Zeba Savage from Savage Learning Environment who brought up the importance of pausing, and the pressure of being perfect. He defeated the great and mighty empire of Ghana. After Sundiata conquered Ghana, he went on a mission to build the greatest empire ever. The kingdom of Mali had gold. They had developed the technology and wherewithal to mine gold, transport, and sell it/trade gold with their neighbors to the north. The gold that went to North Africa then went to Europe and then it went to China and all other places in between. During this time period, the Kingdom or empires from 1200 through the 1600s about 2/3 of the world's gold came from Mali. Highlights from the episode:History of MaliSundiata The Lion KingThe 9th Mansa: Mansa Musa The GreatMalian ArtAbubakari ll and his voyageConnect with Dr. Emmanuel NuesiriLinkedIn: @emmanuel-nuesiriConnect with Mark Dawson:Instagram: @iammarkdawsonLinkedIN: @mark-a-dawsonWebsite: www.bentonmuse.comTwitter: @Iammarkdawson
