On this episode of The Folding Chair podcast we have another BAD BILL ALERT, Dawn Jeffrey joins us as we discuss SB307 the “Generating Arkansas Jobs Act”. This bill is a giveaway to power companies on the backs of poor and working Arkansans who already struggle to pay their energy bills. The legislation in SB307 proposes allowing utility providers to fund their projects by collecting interest from the customers on construction of these projects prior to the project being complete by raising rates on their monthly bills. We also discuss the work of the Little Rock Freedom Fund and the various ways the organization uses community engagement and participatory action research to serve Arkansas.
On this episode of "The Brand Called You", the host interviews Nick Grono, CEO of The Freedom Fund. With over a decade of experience leading efforts to combat modern slavery and human trafficking, Nick shares his unique insights on nonprofit leadership, challenges in recruitment, the importance of diversity, and the need for strategic partnerships. Discover how purpose-driven leadership is reshaping the nonprofit sector. 00:35- About Nick Grono Nick is the Chief Executive Officer of The Freedom Fund. He is the author of a book titled ‘How To Lead Nonprofits'.
The CEO of the FreedomFund.org, Nick Grono, discusses his new book, How to Lead Nonprofits: Turning Purpose into Impact to Change the World. Nick shares his deep wisdom on leadership in the nonprofit sector, drawing from his extensive career that transitioned from corporate law and finance to public policy and, ultimately, nonprofit leadership.Nick highlights the Freedom Fund's vital work in combating modern slavery, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with over 150 grassroots organizations worldwide. He describes how nonprofit leadership differs from corporate leadership, pointing to the lack of structured training for nonprofit executives. His book addresses this gap by providing practical lessons, drawn from his experience and interviews with other nonprofit leaders. The conversation, with host Julia Patrick, peers into three critical themes: purpose, impact, and collaboration. Nick stresses that ‘purpose' is the nonprofit sector's unique superpower, capable of mobilizing teams, funders, and stakeholders to drive systemic change. He also discusses the necessity of investing in leadership development within the NPO space, arguing that funders should recognize leadership support as a vital component of their philanthropic investments. On the topic of ‘collaboration', Nick acknowledges the challenges yet highlights its transformative potential. He explains how the Freedom Fund operates as a collaborative fund, pooling resources from multiple donors to support common strategies. He also points out that competition for limited funding often discourages collaboration among NPO's--a problem the Freedom Fund addresses by committing to multi-year funding and fostering cooperative networks among grantees.Another major topic the duo talk about is trust-based philanthropy, an evolving approach that minimizes administrative burdens on grantees while providing unrestricted funding whenever possible. Nick shares how the Freedom Fund employs trust-based giving principles, including simplifying application and reporting requirements, to better serve grassroots organizations.Nick also advocates for “survivor leadership”, ensuring that those with lived experience in human trafficking and forced labor play an active role in shaping solutions. He explains how “frontline partners”, particularly local community organizations, are the linchpins of effective change, elaborating on why solutions must come from within affected communities rather than being imposed externally. This encompassing interview concludes with an inspiring message: nonprofit leaders must continuously realign with their purpose, invest in their leadership, and embrace collaboration to drive meaningful change. Nick's book serves as a valuable resource for current and aspiring nonprofit leaders looking to enhance their impact. Nick Grono, author of How to Lead Nonprofits and CEO of the Freedom Fund, delves into the unique challenges and responsibilities of nonprofit leadership, offering valuable insights drawn from two decades of experience in the sector. Grono reflects on the complexities of guiding purpose-driven organizations, contrasting the quantifiable metrics of success in the private sector with the more elusive task of measuring impact in the nonprofit world. He underscores how nonprofit leaders must grapple with ambiguity, balance diverse stakeholder expectations, and navigate the tensions between aspirational goals and practical realities. We explore the nuanced role of culture in nonprofit organizations and highlight the transformative potential of a positive, cohesive culture — what he calls a "superpower" — founded on psychological safety. This environment, where all voices are valued and dissenting perspectives are welcomed, is crucial for fostering innovation and ensuring better decision-making. Grono stresses that such a culture is cultivated by leaders who model vulnerability, acknowledge their mistakes, and create spaces for candid dialogue. The conversation also explores the thorny issue of impact measurement, which Grono argues is vital despite its inherent challenges. Unlike financial accounting in the corporate world, nonprofit impact is often subjective and context-dependent, demanding greater intentionality and honesty in its evaluation. Grono illustrates these difficulties with examples from his work at the Freedom Fund, noting the pitfalls of oversimplifying metrics like the number of meals served or people rescued, which may fail to capture the broader systemic changes nonprofits aim to effect. Ultimately, Grono's insights underscore the unique leadership skills required in the nonprofit sector — an ability to navigate complexity, inspire trust, and build cohesive teams, all while staying anchored to the organization's mission. His reflections offer lessons not just for nonprofit leaders, but for anyone seeking to understand how to lead with purpose in a rapidly changing world. Non-profit organizations play an indispensable role in the world today, and are consistently rated higher than governments, the media or businesses in term of public trust. Yet many non-profit organizations suffer from dysfunction. New non-profit leaders find themselves unprepared for the challenges ahead, and even seasoned leaders often struggle to ensure their organizations achieve the impact they aim for. In How to Lead Non-Profits: Turning Purpose into Impact to Change the World (BenBella Books, 2024), Nick Grono, CEO of the Freedom Fund and former Deputy President of the International Crisis Group (ICG), provides a leadership framework that focuses on what truly drives success: maximizing impact by staying true to your organization's purpose, fostering an inclusive culture that inspires and empowers your team, and collaborating with the communities you serve, as well as with funders and peer organizations, to amplify your impact. There are countless books on organizational management and leadership. But most of them come from the business, for-profit, world, whose solutions do not translate well to the fundamentally different world of NGOs and charities. How to Lead Non-Profits fills that gap. Featuring insights and examples from nonprofit and charity leaders around the world, and informed by Grono's extensive experience, this book offers practical advice on how to use the power of purpose to shape every aspect of non-profit organizations—both internally and externally—as they work to make a difference in the world. This is an excellent guide not only for people in leadership positions, but also for anyone who works—or is considering working—in the non-profit sector; wants to start their own non-profit; serves on a non-profit Board or is simply curious about what good leadership in the non-profit sector looks like, regardless of who is in charge. On May 19, President Joe Biden delivered two significant speeches to Black voters. He started his day with a commencement address at Morehouse College, a historically Black liberal arts college for men. Despite media reports of massive protests, there were none. Later, he spoke at the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People's (NAACP) "Fight for Freedom Fund" dinner in Detroit. In both speeches, Biden highlighted his administration's $16 billion investment in historically Black colleges and universities, the historically low Black unemployment rate, efforts to reduce prescription drug prices, and actions on student debt relief. As President Joe Biden touted his administration's successes during his speech at the NAACP's annual Fight for Freedom Fund Dinner in Detroit on Sunday, hundreds of pro-Palestinian picketers stood outside the event to protest Biden's continued support for Israel's military action in Gaza. Plus, Detroit police are still searching for a 22-year-old suspect who escaped their custody while at Henry Ford Hospital on West Grand Boulevard Sunday morning. Ian's account of his groundbreaking reporting on slavery in the South China Sea, the first time a reporter had ever made it onboard a Thai distant-water vessel using enslaved labour. Found shackled by the neck as part of the crew on a dilapidated fishing vessel, Lang Long was a victim of the nightmarish world of debt bondage. A global scourge, sea slavery is something most people do not realize exists. This episode explains how it happens, taking us for the first time on board one such roach and rat-infested ship on the South China Sea, worked by 40 Cambodian boys. The episode also explains how overfishing has given rise to trans-shipment, fish-laundering and a prevalence of abuse that companies and governments have a tough time countering or tracking. In Germany you can go to prison for travelling on public transport without a ticket. It's estimated that 7,000 people are serving a jail sentence for this at any one time. Most of them are serial offenders, usually unemployed or homeless, the poorest people in German society. The law that enables courts to imprison people for not paying a fare dates from the early 1930s when it was introduced by the Nazi government. The public transport companies defend its existence. They say they lose hundreds of millions of Euros a year to people cheating on their fares and that it's important to retain the threat of prison as a deterrent. As Tim Mansel discovers for Assignment, others disagree and are campaigning for the law to be abolished. Most eye-catching is a campaign run by the Freedom Fund, set up in Berlin in 2021, which has raised hundreds of thousands of Euros. Its founder, Arne Semsrott, describes the law as “deeply unjust,” saying it “discriminates heavily against people who don't have money, against people who don't have housing, against people who are already in crisis.” Produced and presented by Tim Mansel (Image: Gisa März, who served a prison sentence for fare dodging.
