We are five days until the election and we accept that some of you may still need to make up your mind, but please, PLEASE, don't let a political ad (or mailer) help with that decision. To quote our uncles at Thanksgiving, "Do Your Own Research". Then Speaker of the House and Dorian Grey poster child Mike Johnson had some very blunt things to say regarding the upcoming session of the house, if the GOP wins. Then Michelle Velasquez from Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin joins the show and we talk about the last days of the election and what they are doing to get the message out to the voters. So you've heard the phrase "abortion is on the ballot" well there aremany states that actually will have the right to abortion access on its ballot this election. And one of the states that will is Arizona. I am joined by Chris Love the Senior Advisor to Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona and Spokesperson for Arizona for Abortion Access, the committee for the 2024 Ballot initiative that if it passes will establish a fundamental right to abortion in the Arizona state constitution. In addition to discussing the importance of the ballot initiative, Chris and I also discuss how her own reproductive health experiences as a Black woman got her into the work fighting to preserve and expand abortion access. Other topics we hit: how communities of color are most impacted when abortion bans are in place and why its critical to have women of color at the table of decision making on reproductive rights policy; holding true to your values as an advocate as well as navigating when those values conflict with immediate policy goals and importance of having advocates and activists fighting for abortion access whenLearn more about how you can help or donate to the efforts of abortion rights advocates in Arizona working on this initiative: Check outhttps://www.arizonaforabortionaccess.org/If you enjoyed the show and you want to join our community of other women of color who are embracing their voice head over to https://embracingyourvoicepod.com/Connect with Atima on:InstagramTwitterLinkedin

The two new leaders of Oregon’s Planned Parenthood affiliates are pushing to dissolve the political arm of their organization in a move that has blindsided some long-time advocates and has them worried about the future of reproductive rights in the state. Oregon has two Planned Parenthood affiliates. They provide reproductive health care, including abortion access, but do not engage in political work such as lobbying or campaigns. Last week, the leaders of those two affiliates sent a letter to the two groups’ political advocacy arm. They informed the lobbying group’s governing board that they plan to dissolve Planned Parenthood Advocates of Oregon and restructure the organization to focus more on “health care and advocating for the needs of the Planned Parenthood affiliates and their patients.” Lauren Dake, OPB political reporter, joins us to talk about the rift in the organization.
Carrie Noni highlights some of the most powerful conversations she has had with health justice advocates, who fight for equality and rights of all.

Joella Striebel, the public affairs regional coordinator for Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin, in studio on reproductive health, how to talk about it, a sex education bill, the abortion debate and free condoms. Striebel, last week, organized a Gov. Tony Evers' roundtable discussion with UW-Eau Clarie students last week. So Striebel recapped some of the things Evers discussed and what students had to say about reproductive health. We also talked about the ongoing fight in Wisconsin over abortion access, as the Legislature debated last week imposing a 14-week abortion ban. That included this state Legislator comparing women to animals. Currently the law is 20 weeks, but that only came after a court fight that struck down the state's 175-year-old abortion ban. Also, other news happening in Madison, we talked about a sex education bill proposed called the Healthy Youth Act. Began the show hitting on the abortion debate in general and how front and center it always seems to be in and some of the misconceptions of Planned Parenthood. That led into what Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin is about.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This week's Left of Lansing Short deals with how Democratic State House Rep. Karen Whitsett from the 4th district in Detroit not only voted against the Reproductive Health Act in House Health Policy Committee this week, but she's signaling she's vote against the RHA when it comes to a vote on the House floor! And with Democrats holding a narrow lead in the House, that would very well defeat the bill. To hear an even more lenghty discussion of the bill, please listen to to Episode 53 with Ashlea Phenicie, VP of Communications and Interim VP of Public Policy for Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan and Planned Parenthood of Michigan. It's one thing for MAGA Christian Nationalist Republicans to vote to push women's health and economic rights back to the 19th Century. But it's a betrayal when a so-called "Democrat" joins in that effort. --Pat leftoflansing.com leftoflansing@gmail.com
The "Friday Short" highlights the Reproductive Freedom Act, which Democratic State Rep. Laurie Pohutsky formally introduced this week. The RFA would reverse many hurtful abortion access restrictions put in place by Republicans through the years as they tried to enact their view of Christian Nationalism on the rest of the state. Please, listen to this week's Left of Lansing episode with Ashlea Phenicie, VP of Communications and Interim VP of Public Policy for Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan and Planned Parenthood of Michigan, as we discuss the RFA in more detail. --Pat leftoflansing.com leftoflansing@gmail.com
It's the 53rd installment of Michigan's premier progressive podcast! I start out mocking the right wing Michigan Republican Party for claiming to care about working Michiganders on this past Labor Day. Then, I talk about the latest from the nutty right wing Ottawa Impact faction, which is working to defund the Ottawa County health department all because it took steps to protect its citizens during the pandemic. I conclude my monologue by highlighting that while the right wing is busy trying to hurt Michigan and her citizens, progressive policies are doing the exact opposite. Governor Gretchen Whitmer made her key "What's Next" speech last week, calling on the state legislature to pass bills for cleaner energy, codifying major parts of the Affordable Care Act, paid family and medical leave, and for passage of the Reproductive Health Act. The RHA would reverse many of the Republican draconian laws which made it difficult for women trying to find abortion access. Ashlea Phenicie, VP of Communications and Interim VP of Public Policy for Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan and Planned Parenthood of Michigan joins me to talk about the RHA, and other reproductive issues in the second segment. The Last Call deals with former Michigan Republican Congressman Mike Rogers, who announced his candidacy for the state's open U.S. Senate seat in '24. Thanks for listening, and please, give the Left of Lansing a good review, and subscribe! And take the battle to them! leftoflansing.com leftoflansing@gmail.com

Tis the season for giving thanks, and we here at the Rules of the Game podcast are immensely grateful for the amazing work done by nonprofits across the country to advocate on behalf of ballot measures during the midterm elections. On this episode, we'll highlight several noteworthy wins. From protecting reproductive rights to expanding education access for Dreamers, it was truly a remarkable year for rallying public support and seizing policy wins at the ballot box. Our attorneys for this episode Leslie Barnes Natalie Ossenfort Tim Mooney Shownotes Ballot Measures: A Quick Review of the Rules Yes, 501(c)(3) public charities CAN support / oppose ballot measures (including ballot initiatives, bond proposals, constitutional amendments, etc.) Public charities can lobby (within their lobbying limits) Advocacy for or against a measure = lobbying The public is a legislator in the ballot measure context Under the insubstantial part test, ballot measure advocacy = lobbying. Using the 501(h) election, ballot measure advocacy = DIRECT lobbying. Public charities should refrain from supporting / opposing candidates that may appear on the same ballot (remain nonpartisan) Different rules for private foundations, which should NOT engage in ballot measure advocacy due to prohibitive excise tax, but can take advantage of lobbying exceptions and use general support grants and specific project grant safe-harbors to support the work of their grantees 501(c)(4)s can engage in nonpartisan as well as partisan ballot measure work, but partisan work should remain a secondary activity of the organization Regardless of what type of tax-exempt org you may work for, also keep in mind state / local law, which may require reporting of ballot measure activities and expenditures Big Wins! Arizona Proposition 308 Championed by Mi Familia Vota, Unidos US, Arizona Community Foundation, and more! Grants undocumented Arizona high school graduates the ability to obtain in-state college tuition prices and gets rid of Prop 300, which passed with 71% of vote in 2006 and banned state benefits for undocumented persons Measure 26-228 in Portland, Oregon Championed by Coalition of Communities of Color (Unite Oregon, Latino Network, Muslim Educational Trust, Imagine Black, NAYA Family Center, Pacific Islander & Asian Family Center, LWV Portland, etc. Expands City Council - Creates four City Council districts with three councilors each and ends City Councilmembers managing day-to-day city services and operations. Emancipation on the Ballot 5 states (OR, TN, AL, LA, and VT) considered proposed state constitutional amendments asking voters whether to abolish slavery Passed in 4 states. LA voters will try again with a revised ballot measure. NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund explains why slavery is still legal in over a dozen states and permitted under the US constitution Why Slavery is Still Legal in America – And How Voters Can Take Action (naacpldf.org) Congress considering amendment to 13th Amendment Alabama Citizens for Constitutional Reform worked to pass AL's new constitution that removed slavery as well as multiple racist provisions Nonprofits will continue to play vital role in implementing these laws Michigan Proposal 3 (aka Reproductive Freedom for All Proposal) Establishes new independent right to reproductive freedom in state constitution and invalidates conflicting state laws Allows state to regulate abortion after fetal viability, but not if abortion is necessary for patient's physical or mental health Supported by Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan, ACLU of Michigan, Michigan Voices, and others Similar wins in California and Vermont. VT's Proposal 5 won with 72% of the vote! Abortion rights now enshrined in VT constitution. It was supported by groups like ACLU of VT, LWV VT, Alliance for a Better VT and more. Michigan Proposal 2 (Expanding Voting Access) Championed by ACLU of Michigan, NAACP Michigan State Conference, and League of Women Voters of Michigan Changes voting policies in Michigan, including requiring nine days of early voting, authorizing absentee ballot drop boxes, and allowing voters without photo ID to sign an affidavit verifying their identity. Carolyn Harding with Whitney Shanahan, Founder of ProChoice with Heart, a growing organization that focuses on holding protests across the country fighting for women's rights! They wear red as a symbol of women's oppression, inspired by Margaret Atwood's book and hulu show, Handmaid's Tale. According to Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio, “On September 1st one of the most extreme abortion bans went into effect — Texas's S.B. 8 will ban abortion at six weeks of pregnancy and encourages private citizens to act as abortion bounty hunters — allowing anyone to sue any Texan who they believe provided an abortion, or even helped a patient get an abortion, after six weeks.” Can you lay out what just happened in Texas, with the six-week abortion ban. We are joined by Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin president and CEO, Tanya Atkinson, to discuss the U.S. Supreme Court court's midnight assault on Roe v. Can the newly united Democrats stand up to the pressure?

While overall access to contraception and other reproductive health services have increased over the last 20 years, access for low-income women and women of color has dropped.
