Look no further than TV news anchor Connie Chung's groundbreaking career for the textbook definition of representation. Host Cynthia Bemis Abrams explores Chung's impact as a trailblazing Chinese-American journalist through the lens of her 2024 memoir, Connie, A Memoir. This episode revisits Chung's rise through national television journalism, her lasting legacy, and her influence on American culture—including the surprise moment during her 2024 appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, where young women named Connie honored her inspiration. Cynthia also reflects on Chung's open letter in The Washington Post, written in support of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford during the Kavanaugh hearings, and how Chung's career helped define resilience in the face of systemic barriers.   Episode Quote: “There's no better definition of representation than the career of Connie Chung.”   Connie: A Memoir https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/connie-chung/connie/9781668639528/   Past Advanced TV Herstory ep about Connie Chung The Women Who Reported Watergate https://advancedtvherstory.libsyn.com/women-who-reported-watergate   The Kelly Clarkson Show Nov. 2024 https://youtu.be/9j97G7bXwCw?si=oTiCc-sXcauJUkpi   Chung's open letter in The Washington Post as reported in Time Magazine  https://time.com/5414736/connie-chung-letter/

Local television newsrooms are often chaotic with breaking news and even routine stories spreading news crews and reporters across a wide geographic area. All are gathering news for both digital distribution and broadcast purposes with multiple and constant deadlines. Someone must coordinate this mayhem and that person in the tri-state area of S.W. Ohio is Ramsay Fulbright, the Assignment Desk Manager for WCPO 9 News. He daily is sending reporters and photographers to stories across Cincinnati, SW Ohio, Indiana, and northern Kentucky. Once the news is gathered, Ramsay also leads a team of assignment editors who feed the news products to various producers of multiple local television news shows every day. Experience pays off for Ramsay. Over the years, his news judgment has been honed by his time as a news photographer. Prior to jumping to the assignment desk, Ramsay spent 11 years as either a photographer or the head photographer at stations in Arkansas, Tennessee, Arizona and at his home station of WCPO News 9 in Cincinnati. He lives in a fast-paced professional world, but he relishes the challenges. He boasts that no two days are the same and that the variety makes his job fascinating. A study conducted by Gallup and the Knight Foundation has found that local television news is trusted by more people than national news outlets. The latest poll showed the gap between trust in local and national news has grown by three percentage points since Gallup/Knight's findings on this measure in 2019. “In 2021, Americans were 17 points more likely to say they trust reporting by local news organizations “a great deal” or “quite a lot” than to trust reporting by national news organizations,” the report said. As a result, WOUB's Spectrum podcast is doing a special series on the impacts of local news by talking with representatives of three television stations: WEWS TV in Cleveland, WCPO TV in Cincinnati and WKRT in Norfolk, Virginia. We are trying to learn how local news stations operate, how they determine their content, and how they meet the needs of their audiences. Our first guests are Joe Donatelli, digital director at WEWS and Mark Ackerman, Investigative Executive Producer at WEWS in Cleveland. They discuss the need for strong investigative reporting on the local level as well as the demands of constantly changing and updating digital content. We also learn of their individual career paths.

Paul Solman, a business, economics, and occasional arts reporter for the PBS NewsHour since 1985, is passionate about bridging the political and cultural divides that Americans face – between right and left, rich and poor, rural and urban, and others. He channels some of that passion into helping run a nonprofit called the American Exchange Project – a domestic exchange program where high school students from across the United States travel to spend a week getting to know and living alongside teens from way outside their own bubbles. Last year, Solman reported a segment about the American Exchange Project and other efforts to counter polarization, as part of a series reflecting on what led up to the January 6th insurrection at the US Capitol. But, he argues the TV news format presents major barriers to telling more stories about peace and reconciliation. In this episode, Paul Solman and host Jamil Simon discuss why it's so difficult to tell peace stories on TV news. Also: how economic inequality factors into polarization, and the power of youth programs to promote the mindset that “we're all in this together.” Watch Paul Solman's Reports: Political Polarization Prompts Efforts to Bridge the GapWhy Louisianans blame government, not corporations, for pollution problemsLearn about the American Exchange Project at americanexchangeproject.org. Follow Paul Solman on Twitter @paulsolman.Making Peace Visible is hosted by Jamil Simon and produced by Andrea Muraskin. When I have a bad day, one of those days where I feel like nothing's going right. Rather than turn to a book, I sit down, and I write. And I'll just fill these pages. I can write really big, I can write angry; that's better than typing. because I can do what I want to. When I'm upset I can really get my emotions out. So I get it all out, and it gets it out of my system. It's a purging. Then I tear the pages out and burn them because it's not for anybody else. It's me getting rid of it. So Thoughts on Breathing I don't really do so many breathing techniques, but I will tell you something I do to relax. I lay back, because sometimes as a creative, just thinking, just sitting down and being alone with your thoughts matters. And what I do is I'll lay back and I'll take a towel and put it over my eyes like a blindfold. I shut out all the light so I can just be alone in my thoughts, or I'll use music to go along with that. So I can just sort of ease myself in so I think more than I concentrate on what's going on up here. Not so much of the breathing, but just on getting calm and focused. So Suggested Resources Book: Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey App: Youtube Bullying Story One of the stories that I tell people was, I had this kid who was a few years ahead of me, a big guy, pick me up and hang me on the wall on the coat hangers by my belt loops in the hallway, and I couldn't get out, I'm stuck. So to this day, I can hear the laughter of the kids. And it's very, very painful. In that situation, there's not much you can do, but then you flash forward. So The first boss I had in television news; he was just not a nice guy. The kind who would sit you down and stand over the desk and lean over you and talk down to you and be really stern, and at the time, I didn't know what to do with that. But with the mindfulness that I now that I have, I would do one of two things. I would either stand up and say, when you sit, I'll sit. Or I'd leave. When you decide to calm down, I'll come talk to you. Because that's just something I can't abide by anymore. And I think if I'd had more awareness about me; if I had had a little more confidence about myself because it's funny that stuff sticks, you know, people don't think it does. When you meet a bully even as an adult, you still kind of cower back.
