Why did moderate Republicans fade from prominence? What role did populism play in reshaping the party? And is there a future for pragmatic, effective governance in today's polarized America? This conversation explores the historical shifts, key figures, and structural challenges facing the Republican Party, offering insights for anyone interested in American political history.GEOFFREY KABASERVICE LINKS:
What happens when nearly 72 million Americans risk losing their health care? House Republicans are pushing a spending plan that could slash nearly $1 trillion from Medicaid over the next decade. It's part of a broader budget blueprint to cut $2 trillion in federal spending while making room for $4.5 trillion in tax cuts and boosts to defense and border security. But the plan is already hitting roadblocks. Moderate Republicans in swing districts where millions rely on Medicaid are pushing back, warning that these cuts could devastate rural and low-income communities. Speaker Mike Johnson insists the budget doesn't specifically target Medicaid. But when you tell the Energy and Commerce Committee to find $800 billion in cuts, there aren't many places to take from. With the GOP's razor-thin House majority, they can only afford to lose one vote, and as opposition grows, today's vote could come down to the wire. The question remains: Who pays the price? Heading into next week's primary and Republican caucus, some Republicans who find themselves in the middle feel unheard.
A seemingly drunk Marjorie Taylor Greene was having a good time at Trump's New Hampshire victory party this week, and she wanted to make sure that everyone knew it. She managed to get herself interviewed by a right wing network where she said, while slurring her words horribly, that political consultants for people like Nikki Haley should go to jail for working for a losing candidate. The woman is even more unhinged after she's had a few. Also, Donald Trump has won the first two Republican contests by fairly decent margins, and now the apparatus of the Republican Party is calling for everyone to unify behind him. But looks can be deceiving, and the real numbers from Trump's victories show that he has little to no path to victory in a general election. Moderate Republicans and Independents want nothing to do with him, and he can't win with only the MAGA coalition behind him.And a former Trump staffer that had previously served as a director for his New Hampshire campaign in a previous election was forcibly removed from Trump's victory party in New Hampshire after he posted a picture of himself with a smiling Alina Habba. Habba's presence has called into question her honesty and integrity, as she told the judge the day before that she was sick and the trial was then postponed. The former staffer was removed after posting the picture but right before the news broke on NBC.Finally, Donald Trump is tired of the primaries, and he's ready to be crowned the king of the GOP. The only thing standing in his way is his last remaining opponent, Nikki Haley. So Trump is now going scorched earth against Haley and all who support her, and in a post on Truth Social Trump threatened to expel and ex-communicate any Republican who gives money to Nikki Haley going forward. That's a rather empty threat, and it shows that Trump is trying to bully his way to the top.Subscribe to our YouTube channel to stay up to date on all of Farron's content: https://www.youtube.com/FarronBalancedFollow Farron on social media!Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FarronBalanced/Twitter: https://twitter.com/farronbalancedInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/farronbalancedTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@farronbalanced?lang=en

Moderate Republicans had a brief moment in the sun when they made sure Trump loyalist and election denier Jim Jordan wouldn't be elected House Speaker. The MAGAs are back to flexing their muscles now with one of their own in the Speaker position. Louisiana Republican Mike Johnson was elected Speaker on Wednesday, ending more than three weeks of manufactured drama pretty much where it started.
Host and Playbook co-author Ryan Lizza joins Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) to learn how he and other GOP moderates, institutionalists, and Biden-district Republicans have organized against Jim Jordan's campaign to be speaker of the House… and what the endgame is for Republicans to escape this mess. Ryan Lizza is a Playbook co-author for POLITICO. Mike Lawler is the representative for New York's 17th district. Kara Tabor is a producer for POLITICO audio. Alex Keeney is a senior producer for POLITICO audio.
Guest Andrew Handel, Director of Education and Workforce Development Task Force with ALEC, joins to discuss latest education freedom rankings by state. Discussion of financial freedom, open enrollment, parental empowerment, and more. Are states working to better their education systems? Round of of House Speaker vote fails for Jim Jordan...can we see unity? Discussion of who are the holdouts now. Is it still of the fault of "hardliners conservatives" for lack of progress in the House? Moderate Republicans seem to fight harder against conservatives in their own party, than they do Democrats.

In this episode, Alex starts by brushing over the election in Turkey that went into a runoff on Sunday. Unfortunately, Erdogan won once again and is now going to enter into his third decade as the leader of Turkey. Alex questions whether the election was truly fair, but either way he knows that it will be bad for democracy and bad news for secularism. Next, Alex dances in a small puddle of Schadenfreude because Texas' Attorney General, Ken Paxton, was impeached for violating numerous policies involving a powerful real estate developer. Moderate Republicans even voted to impeach Paxton as MAGA Republicans are threatening those that voted to impeach him. As the impeachment now moves to the senate for the trial, Alex is worried that Paxton could still survive. Finally, Alex is surprised but happy that Joe Biden and Kevin McCarthy ended up striking a deal over the debt ceiling debacle. After all the chaos and looming deadline, the deal is actually not bad for either side and has some moderate spending cuts along with sustained programs that Biden pushed forward in the Inflation Reduction Act. Alex argues that the agreement was good for the center of American politics but could be bad for the Republicans.

Church and Main: At the Intersection of Religion and Public Life
The United States stands alone among major democracies in having just two parties. For many years that was okay; because the Democrats and Republicans were actually two coalitions with smaller “parties” within them. But as the parties have become purer, our politics have become more polarized and unable to govern. It has also left a lot of people who were once part of either party on the outs. Pro-life Democrats and Moderate Republicans have become rare in our political culture. Could a third party break the logjam? History would tell us no but William Fleming would say yes. Fleming is the head of the Georgia state affiliate of the American Solidarity Party. What's unique about this party is the ideology that it springs from. The ASP is a Christian Democracy party. You might think this is some kind of far-right theocratic party, but it's not. Instead, Christian Democracy is an ideology that is ground in Catholic Social Teaching and Neocalvinist thought. It takes these teachings to provide solutions on issues such as poverty and the environment. The parties are found throughout the world, with the most well-known being the Christian Democrats in Germany and the Christian Democrats of Chile. In this episode, we learn about Christian Democracy and the American Solidarity Party. “The Proclamation is the drawing of a sword that can never be sheathed again.”This is the story of the Emancipation Proclamation.Anti-slavery, moderate-Republican President Abraham Lincoln has never liked slavery. He wants to prevent it from expanding to new US territories. But he also never intended to go on the offensive against the “peculiar institution” within those states where it already exists. The Illinois Rail-Splitter knows the law; he’s aware that the constitution protects slavery at the state level. Then the Civil War came. As the South breaks away from the Union, the North breaks philosphically on slavery. The abolitionists say ending slavery must be a war aim. The Democrats and border-states say this war is only about preserving the Union. Moderate Republicans and still others are mixed. Meanwhile, enslaved Americans within the Confederacy are seeking refuge in Federal army camps. How should Union Generals respond? Can they give sanctuary without upsetting the border-states that may still join the Confederacy? And do seceded states still have constitutional rights? Or does war mean the president can use his constitutional war powers to end slavery among rebelling states by proclamation? And if he does … what will that outcome be?The questions are boundless. The answers are unknowable without taking the plunge. Your move, President Lincoln.
