During Carey's first pregnancy, her baby was diagnosed with Intra Uterine Growth Restriction (a fairly subjective label that means the baby is thought to be small, and it is not known why). Because of this, she was subjected to multiple ultrasounds during the last few weeks of her pregnancy, and highly pressured to induce. Carey refused to be induced, and went into labor spontaneously. The labor experience was colored by the fears of the medical staff, she was subjected to coached pushing, and a whole team of NICU doctors took and assessed her baby as soon as she was born. Her baby was perfectly healthy and did not need the NICU, but Carey was still robbed of those golden moments post-birth, and bonding between her and the baby was disrupted. Although this kind of birth could have been someone else's “great experience”, it left her with a lot of healing to do. She knew almost immediately that what had happened to her in the hospital was unnecessary and created trauma for her and her baby. She said goodbye to the medical system, consciously conceived her second child, had a wild pregnancy, and a beautiful, healing, freebirth. Today we're talking about how to overcome, and avoid, traumatic childbirth experiences. My guest for this conversation, Rebecca, shared with me a statistic that blew my mind: 35-45% of people report having a traumatic birth… An absolutely enormous number! Throughout our conversation, Rebecca shares some key factors that play a role resulting in traumatic birth experiences, red flags to keep an eye out for when working with your care provider, and 3 top-tier tips for preparing for childbirth. Additionally, we go into her expert's take on elective labor induction, how to advocate for yourself, and different birthing positions. We round out our wonderful conversation with how parents and those in the birth team can learn to advocate for themselves if they are feeling pressured or coerced by their care provider. The information in this conversation is so rich and I'm hoping that by the end of this conversation, you're going to feel so much more ready to move into that experience and have the confidence of your team around you. Today on Yoga | Birth | Babies, Rebecca Dekker, PhD, RN joins me for this special conversation. Rebecca Dekker, a nurse with her PhD, is the founder and CEO of Evidence Based Birth® and the author of Babies Are Not Pizzas: They're Born, Not Delivered! Previously, Dr. Dekker was an Assistant Professor of Nursing at the University of Kentucky. In 2016, she shifted gears to focus full time on the mission of Evidence Based Birth.® Dr. Dekker is also host of the Evidence Based Birth® Podcast! Rebecca would like to offer the advice to expectant parents to do the research in finding the right care provider for you and educate yourself in building a supportive birth team. It is never too late, and it may feel like a trap, but you can be creative and resourceful in finding a way to get people who you trust at your birth. If it's not possible to switch, then make sure you have strong advocates in the room with you that are ready to speak on your behalf. Rebecca would like you to know that it's not your fault if your care provider is abusing you and it's not your job to find another doctor to replace them. Most the time, there's somebody else who can step in, and most of the time they come in really willing to help and feeling bad that you've had a bad experience. I can't believe we've reached 50 EPISODES of the Life With Grief Podcast, my friends! To commemorate this in a big way, I'm sharing a personal story that is close to my heart—the (very traumatic) birth story of our daughter, Audrey, in January 2024. I have to be honest, I was really going back and forth on sharing this. There was definitely a time in the last two or three months where I didn't want to relive this experience and wasn't sure if I would ever feel comfortable talking about it. But, I think it's an important story to share. Not only because I want to be very open and vulnerable with you and my grief journey, but this birth was such an important lesson in intuition for me. I've always felt like I was a fairly intuitive person, but honestly, since the deaths of my parents and as I've continued to grow and become more introspective, I felt like this was such a beautiful example of that. I couldn't not share it. Had I not listened to my intuition, the outcome of our daughter's life would have been very different (in other words, she would not have survived). So, I'm honored and humbled to share this experience with you today… Leave me a voice note and be featured on the podcast! https://www.speakpipe.com/LifeWithGrief Work with me: Explore my membership: https://lossesbecomegains.com/membership Work with me one-on-one: https://lossesbecomegains.com/work-with-tara Connect with me further: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lossesbecomegains/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lifewithgriefpodcast/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/losses.become.gains Website: https://lossesbecomegains.com/ Shop the LBG Daily Journal: https://lossesbecomegains.com/journal By accessing this Podcast, I acknowledge that the entire contents are the property of Tara Accardo, or used by Tara Accardo with permission. In the twentieth episode of The Motherwhelm, I am joined by my beautiful friend Erin, who shares her experience of pregnancy and motherhood living with type 1 diabetes, and the loneliness of navigating her postpartum period after a traumatic birth that resulted in PTSD and postpartum depression. This episode is a powerful one. Not least because it is the story of a lovely friend, but also because of how it perfectly represents the aspects of motherhood that so often get overlooked: challenge, uncertainty, strength, and resilience. Erin shares so beautifully and vulnerably, and I just know you will resonate with her story.

One thing I do know is that the Lord uses all things for good, even traumatic birth experiences. There was a time I suffered with PPD and PTSD because of the unwanted and dare I say unnecessary c-section. 8 years ago tomorrow my first born was brought into the world into strangers hands and bright lights. In this episode I recount the trauma, the truth of the situation and the triumph I'm not able to have because of the Lord's goodness. I hope you feel encouraged that no matter what outcome you have had in your birth or do have that God can use it for good. I also hope you can listen to my story and avoid the pitfalls I ran into headfirst so you can have a different story then me. On this week's listener series episode, we welcome Annie. Annie and her husband live in California at the wedding venue they own and operate. A few weeks before their due date, they experienced a wildfire that damaged a large part of their wedding venue. Annie experienced a lot of stress and started to feel the effects of it in her pregnancy. Around the same time, the nurses at their hospital went on strike which brought in travel nurses and a change of normal care to her delivery. Annie's story is a prime example that trauma can occur even when there is no physical danger to the birthing parent or the baby. What you will hear on this episode:- environmental stressors affecting their home and business- nurses strike- posterior position/sunny side up baby- epidural turned off without being asked- daughter born with bleeding blister and bruise from friction- postpartum with environmental stressors still at play- long-term impact on confidence in parenting- hope in healing If you have a birth trauma story you would like to share with us, click this link and fill out the form. Once you've experienced a traumatic birth, the best you can hope for from that point on is just-- a birth without trauma, right? It's best to just play it safe- not to push the envelope....? Regina has been married to her husband Miles for 11 years and mother to their 3 children. Currently the Lowenfields live in Southern Indiana where they are building an events venue on their 75 acres. Today we'll hear how Regina and Miles experienced trauma, tried to cope, and then went big with their most recent birth experience. Before we jump in, I want to share an important update with you all. The release of this episode coincides exactly with the 5 year anniversary of this podcast. I am just so thrilled to look back over the last 5 years and to celebrate the 264 episodes that have been shared in that time. I also want to let you know that I am now going to be going on hiatus with the podcast. I am so excited to focus my energy on a few projects that the Lord has been drawing me into over the last year, and most importantly to spend every waking moment soaking up the beauty of my three little ones. I'm not sure if anyone's told you, but holy moly time goes FAST and one day you wake up and your oldest is seven years old and you wonder what the heck happened. So in the meantime, know this: I am still honored to provide you with the deepest homebirth childbirth education through The Homebirth Collective or Happy Homebirth Academy, both of which are self-paced and accessible in the show notes, at myhappyhomebirth.com, or through my instagram bio. I'm not going to be checking in on instagram or facebook often, so if you need anything, the best way to reach me is at hello@myhappyhomebirth.com. If this podcast has meant something to you, would you take a moment now to leave a review? It would mean so much to me. Episode Roundup: If you've experienced a traumatic birth in the past, don't feel that you have to settle for 'not traumatic'. The opposite of a traumatic birth is not merely 'not traumatic', but it's ecstatic, and that's something that you can prepare for, pray for, and quit often attain. Alright, my friends. What an honor this has been. I look forward to coming back in the future with more beautiful stories, but in the meantime, I am praying for all of you. That you'll enjoy your pregnancies, your births, your babies, your children. That you'll feel the love of the Lord covering you like a blanket, realizing that it's somehow even deeper and stronger than that insane love we feel for our babies. I'll see you back here next time.
