Dorothy, a 24-year-old teacher from Harlem, is magically transported to the urban-fantasy Land of Oz. On her travels seeking help from the mysterious Wiz, Dorothy befriends a Scarecrow, a robot called Tin Man, and a Cowardly Lion.The Wiz was theatrically released the following year on October 24, 1978, to critical and commercial failure. The film received generally negative reviews from critics, with many unfavorably comparing the film to its source material. Some critics criticized the casting of Ross as Dorothy, while others criticized the direction of Lumet, who was considered a poor choice for directing a musical. He was 91.His death was confirmed by his publicist in a statement to NPR that did not mention the cause of death. The statement said that Jones died peacefully at his home in Bel Air, California, surrounded by his family.A private funeral has been held a week after his death.The memorial was attended by close family members in Los Angeles following the legendary music producer's death at age 91 on Nov. 3, the Associated Press reported Sunday. In this solo mini-episode, I talk about blaxploitation cinema by discussing 'Shaft' and 'Foxy Brown' (along with some talk about 'The Wiz' thrown into the mix). Note- I do spoil the (pretty great) ending of 'Foxy Brown' towards the end of the episode (around the 7:00 minute mark). I thought it best to give you this heads up.

This week we are graced by the presence of the wonderful writer/director, DeMane Davis (Lift, 'Queen Sugar', 'How to Get Away with Murder'). She's on the program this week to discuss The Wiz. She and April begin the conversation by fawning over the performance of the one and only Diana Ross as Dorothy. They also cover the technical prowess of director Sidney Lumet, and why he considers this film somewhat of a failure. The conversation then turns towards DeMane's work as a TV director. They go in depth on what a day on set actually looks like. DeMane tells a story about a time when the producers of her feature Lift brought on another editor. But she also stresses that the most important thing is getting your work out in to the world. And lastly, DeMane emphasizes the lessons she learned from The Wiz about believing in yourself, and that when you are comfortable and confident in the work that you're doing, that's when you become really dangerous.
