The week between qualifying for the Indianapolis 500 and the actual race is usually pretty quiet from a news perspective. But there's nothing usual about the last week in this year's Month of May. Major penalties assessed to two cars owned by Team Penske—including the car driven by two-time defending champion Josef Newgarden—inflamed long-running concerns about Roger Penske's ownership of both the IndyCar Series and arguably its most successful team. In an extraordinary press conference on Monday, IndyCar President Doug Boles announced that he and another Penske executive decided that harsher penalties were warranted in an effort to protect the integrity of the Indy 500. Their decision, he said, was made without the input of their boss, Roger Penske. Two days later, Team Penske announced something that would have been unthinkable before the 2024 season--that it was parting ways with three of the team's top executives. That included President Tim Cindric, long considered to be Penske's successor in the racing part of his automobile empire. The departures have been widely reported as firings. Boles dropped another bombshell late on Wednesday. He revealed that IndyCar has been exploring the creation of an independent governing body beyond Penske's control to officiate the series without the appearance of bias. If you live in the central Indiana media market, these rapid-fire announcements might have been bewildering. You've heard references to “cheating” and “scandal.” You've heard that the smoking gun for the qualifying penalties was something called an “attenuator” that had been illegally modified in some way. You've heard that all of these developments are a “big deal” for Penske, and therefore the series. If you don't follow IndyCar religiously, this week's podcast gives you the relevant background and serves as a primer on which elements are important. Our guest is John Oreovicz, a journalist and author who has covered IndyCar for three decades.
Host Brandon Contes interviews Fox IndyCar analyst and 2016 Indy 500 pole sitter James Hinchcliffe. There are some that feel Cindric had a path forged in gold before his feet. What most don't realize is that his parents didn't even want him to race a car. Most also don't realize how hard the Mooresville, N.C., driver has worked to make the most out of every opportunity he has gotten. Oh, and about those opportunities... he's made the most of them. From sportscar racing, Global Rallycross to NASCAR and in between, Cindric hasn't been average. In his rookie of the year attempt in NASCAR's Truck Series he put the bumper to a competitor at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park to get into the series' playoffs. Austin admits to Dale and Mike that it was a move that drew a lot of criticism and he shares how he learned from the experience Next was his big shot in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. The opportunity was something he admits he wasn't exactly ready for. The first year came with its challenges, hopping between three different rides. One of which, through their struggles, taught him another valuable lesson in his young racing career. Getting the nod to fill the seat of the Team Penske No. 22 ride was no surprise, based off of his pathway into NASCAR and his family dynamic. He took the opportunity and ran with it. Soon, Cindric developed himself from a road course threat to a winning racecar. In 2020 he won the finale at Phoenix and stuck his flag into the ground as a Champion in NASCAR's Xfinity Series. The next season, the winning ways continued, but a championship did not. With the knowledge he was already moving up to the Cup Series in 2022, Austin wanted to go out on top. A last lap move by Daniel Hemric stole that from him. In post race interviews, he handled it with the poise of a racer well-beyond his years. Dale and Mike discuss the approach with Austin. There's much more to Cindric than meets the eye. First off, his size. He's a tall racecar driver which is uncommon. He also plays the tuba. Yes, the tuba. Everyone talks about his racing lineage on his father's side, but did you know his mother's side has roots in Sprint Car racing and are winners of the Indianapolis 500? Open Segment Before Cindric entered the studio, Dale and Mike decided to grab JR Motorsports Xfinity driver Justin Allgaier and pull him into the Bojangles Studio for a quick chat. The driver of the Brandt #7 Chevrolet in the Xfinity Series recently tested his car and a Chevy wheel-force car at the newly reconfigured Atlanta Motor Speedway. As we go into this race with so many unknowns, Allgaier shares details on his first hand experience at speed and going backwards at the tricky Georgia speedplant. Dale Jr. also shares an unusual story about how he once had a beer with George Strait in Key West. AskJr Hannah Newhouse brings a bunch of great questions from the fans on social media and DIrty Mo Media's live Youtube Stream. Topics covered: DJD's new TV home on Peacock. DEI's number choices. Our next guest is the NTT IndyCar Series points leader, Josef Newgarden, who drove to victory in the June 8 DXC Technology 600 at Texas Motor Speedway. Newgarden made the strategic move of the race when Team Penske president Tim Cindric called him into the pits during a caution period on Lap 137. Running ninth at the time, but with only 11 cars running on the lead lap, Cindric believed a fresh set of Firestone tires would allow Newgarden to run faster laps than the other drivers on the track. The strategy paid off when Newgarden's laps were 218 miles per hour compared to the rest of the field running in the 208 to 210 miles per hour range. During the final round of pit stops, Newgarden's team short-filled the tank for a very quick stop and by the time the pit sequence cycled through, he was the leader on Lap 203. Newgarden led the rest of the 248-lap race, but had to fight off a fierce challenge from Alexander Rossi. It was Newgarden's first win at Texas Motor Speedway. RACEDAY's Bruce Martin caught up with Newgarden after he won the DXC Technology 600 to talk about that and other topics on today's Honda IndyCar Report.
