Freemasonry is described in its own ritual as a "Beautiful and profound system of morality, veiled in allegories and illustrated by symbols". The symbolism of Freemasonry is found throughout the Masonic lodge, and contains many of the working tools of a medieval or renaissance stonemason. The whole system is transmitted to initiates through the medium of Masonic ritual, which consists of lectures and allegorical plays. In most jurisdictions, a Bible, Quran, Tanakh, Vedas or other appropriate sacred text (known in some rituals as the Volume of the Sacred Law) will always be displayed while the lodge is open (in some French and other Continental lodges, the Masonic Constitutions are used instead). In lodges with a membership of mixed religions it is common to find more than one sacred text displayed. A candidate will be given his choice of religious text for his Obligation, according to his beliefs. The United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE) alludes to similarities to legal practice in the UK, and to a common source with other oath taking processes. In keeping with the geometrical and architectural theme of Freemasonry, the Supreme Being is referred to in Masonic ritual by the titles of the Great Architect of the Universe, Grand Geometrician or similar, to make clear that the reference is generic, and not tied to a particular religion's conception of God.Some lodges make use of tracing boards: painted or printed illustrations depicting the various symbolic emblems of Freemasonry. They can be used as teaching aids during the lectures that follow each of the three degrees, when an experienced member explains the various concepts of Freemasonry to new members.Solomon's Temple is a central symbol of Freemasonry which holds that the first three Grand Masters were King Solomon, King Hiram I of Tyre, and Hiram Abiff – the craftsman/architect who built the temple. Masonic initiation rites include the reenactment of a scene set on the Temple Mount while it was under construction. Every Masonic lodge, therefore, is symbolically the Temple for the duration of the degree and possesses ritual objects representing the architecture of the Temple. These may either be built into the hall or be portable. Among the most prominent are replicas of the pillars Boaz and Jachin through which every initiate has to pass.Historically, Freemasons used various signs (hand gestures), grips or "tokens" (handshakes), and passwords to identify legitimate Masonic visitors from non-Masons who might wish to gain admission to meetings. These signs, grips, and passwords have been exposed multiple times; today Freemasons use dues cards and other forms of written identification.

As cathedral buildings began to decline, some guilds and associations began to accept honorary members in order to boost their membership numbers. Modern Freemasonry lodges are considered to have developed out of these guilds. According to the Masonic Service Association of North America, the symbolism that is used in Freemasonry rituals is considered to have come from the medieval era.” p.2 pp.2 The History of the Freemasons Finally Explained by Marina Manoukian “In an article in the book GRAND LODGE 1717-1967, which was published by the United Grand Lodge of England in 1967, Bro. Harry Carr wrote of the Transition Theory as though it was an established fact. This is unfortunate as, although the book was an official Grand Lodge publication and therefore bore the stamp of authority, the opinions expressed in the articles were those of the individual contributors, not necessarily approved by the United Grand Lodge of England. Nevertheless, many brethren have assumed that Bro. Carr's account was officially accepted. It must therefore be emphasized that his views have been challenged by several writers since then; and, as he had to admit to me, there is not a shadow of proof to support the theory he had put forward.” p.3 pp.4 Brother Cyril N. Speaking on "Freemasonry in the 21st Century" When Keith Murray moved from Scotland to Australia he had few acquaintances, but as a member of Freemasonry he knew he had little to worry about. Being a member of the organisation gave him the ability to understand all sorts of different aspects of Australian life and it also gave him Brethren he could trust, and provided him with a great deal of confidence and support to build a new career here.” A chartered surveyor and licensed estate agent since 1986, specialising in commercial property, Keith worked in Glasgow and Edinburgh before moving to Melbourne around twenty-three years ago primarily dealing with shopping centres and retail development. He insists that he gained many valuable skills from his association with the craft: “certainly dispute resolution and public speaking but also understanding the different backgrounds of people, their culture, pressure points and positives to use in negotiations. Essentially Keith's work is about building relationships with clients and people, and Freemasonry allowed me to relate to people better, and thus gain their trust.” Formerly of the Lodge of Paisley St James in Scotland, Keith is currently the Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of Victoria and is a member of both Seavic , Earl of Dunmore and Amalthea Lodges. Keith appreciates the ability to extend the benefits of Freemasonry to his wife of 27 years. They have travelled across Victoria but also internationally and have formed many friendships which they both would call life-time friendships through freemasonry. At his installation as Grand Master, over 1200 people attended with many Jurisdictions represented including Scotland, China, India, Canada, The Bahamas, France, to name but a few.

It's all about perspective. Often Grand Masters are looked at as if on a pedestal. Surprisingly enough - they're actually real people, and today we get to know a special one. What's So Special About Massachusetts?  Though other Grand Lodges may try to contest it, the Grand Lodge of Masons in Massachusetts is generally accepted to be the oldest chartered Grand Lodge in the United States. Not only that, it's the 3rd oldest Grand Lodge in the world, behind only Scotland and the United Grand Lodge of England. To be the Grand Master of a place like this must be quite the job (and interesting to boot), right? Well... Today we find out. And in so doing, we get to know the man at the helm of the ship, so to speak, for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In this episode, your co-hosts are (once again) joined by very special guests Most Worshipful Paul Fulton Gleason, Grand Master of Masons in Massachusetts, and Bro. Christopher Rooney. In this installment we learn more about Most Worshipful Gleason himself - both his personal life and his Masonic career. First we learn where he hails from and how he found Masonry. Next we delve a little deeper into his career as an officer of both his Blue Lodge and Grand Lodge. MW Gleason shares how Grand Lodge officer candidates are selected and elected - a method that is likely different from many other jurisdictions. He also shares what it's like to govern such a large jurisdiction, comparing and contrasting with nearby neighbors (including Rhode Island). And we also learn some of his biggest challenges and greatest highlights so far from his time as Grand Master.   What's in this episode: We are once again joined by MW Gleason and Bro. Rooney We learn all about MW Gleason, including Where he comes from, and how he ended up in MA How he came to join Masonry How he ended up as an officer, both in Blue Lodge and Grand Lodge How candidates for Grand Lodge office are selected and elected. What it's like to govern this jurisdiction And ultimately, what it's like to be Grand Master of Massachusetts Episode Resources: www.MassFreemasonry.org Connect with Darrell, Bryan, and Worthy & Well Qualified Facebook Page Facebook Group Instagram Twitter E-mail - worthymasonic@gmail.com Support us by becoming a Patron! Have you ever wondered what goes on behind closed doors at a men only club? Maybe you have even asked yourself why segregated groups still exist. According to sociologist Todd Migliaccio, society has historically been male dominated making men only clubs suited to the running of it. However, with the current drive towards gender equality and movements such as MeToo and Time's Up, it begs the question; Why men only? Freemasonry is said to consist of two branches "not in mutual regular amity". The Anglo/American "Regular" tradition of jurisdictions, typified by the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE) (mostly termed Grand Lodges), and the European "Continental" tradition of jurisdictions, typified by GODF (mostly termed Grand Orients).
