Past Master Jeff Bayer (Curmudgeon Supreme) and I begin reading another series of articles written by Past Grand Master of Indiana, Dwight L. Smith way back in 1964. It was a continuation or a follow up to his first article "Whither Are We Traveling?" Did anything change since he published the first articles? Did Masons pay attention? Did Lodges begin to read these with their brethren? Did Masons learn anything about what Freemasonry is not and what it is? Let's find out. Follow me on Spotify and iTunes. In part 3 of this series, Brother Jeff Bayer and I finish up an article published in 1964 by the Past Grand Master of Indiana called "Whither Are We Traveling?" We cover: The Puritan Influence on American Masonry. NO ALCOHOL IN THE LODGE!!! Freemasonry should be made over to fit what the Moose Lodge is and make it easier. No F@#ing WAY! The Casual Living of the Day The Over Emphasis on Togetherness! DEI!!!? We share some of our experiences working in the quarries of the Symbolic Blue Lodge and ask if any of what Dwight L. Smith said is still relevant. Ultimately, you have to ask yourselves: Why does some of this sound familiar? Was this always the case? When did this start to happen? Who is to blame for the state of masonry? What can we do to correct course and make masonry worth continuing? We take up our journey in August of 2022 right before one of our regular Executive Committee meetings and the whole reason why we wanted to record these conversations. We do repeat ourselves again on a few topics because some of what we had to present just overlaps. Our Executive Committee meetings were every 4 to 6 weeks and normally at Jeff Gibson's house. At the EC meeting, we learn what all the complaints are all about. A concordant body was not happy with us and wanted to rent our building again. Symbolic Blue Lodge is King. “If we play nice with a certain appendant body, all will go away”. January 28th, 2023, the Master of Palm Springs Lodge No.693 receives an email from Grand Lodge informing him that he has been removed from office and that our charter was suspended due to certain financial improprieties and violations of Masonic procedures. Several officers resigned due to the belief that Grand Lodge was being less than truthful and being economical with certain information. We are being accused of having a secret account that we are drawing money from. I will let you just listen to the rest of this episode so that You can get the full effect of what is going on in California Masonry throughout the whole state. Rainman tells us all the hats he wore during the first two years of our coming back and helping to make a lodge in our image. A quality meal always lifts morale, and we always have quality 3-course meals before a stated meeting for $20. We had a host who would escort you to your seats. The brethren, prospects, or visitors would help serve and clean up afterward. Rainman and the chef would argue all the time before starting meeting dinners. Rainman quit his posts, but other brethren stepped up and locked shields with us. What meaningful degrees mean to Rainman. Some of the pitfalls of a progressive line. No solemnity or decorum during degrees. Jeriel Smith from South Pasadena #290 Observant Lodge came down for a first degree and immediately postponed their degree because of what they saw that night. That's how impressed they were. A meaningful member experience. Have decorum, be solemn, be respectful, and above all bring back the mystery. The magnet that holds it all together The members that we have are invested in the success of our lodge. The 3 to 5 Year Plan is different for every lodge because Freemasonry is different. Are we volunteers in Freemasonry? Being financially responsible. Covid hits and stalls every lodge's progress for the next three years. A popular novel inspired a curiosity about fraternalism back in 2016 for Gary Harper which led him to start researching various fraternal orders.  After some study, he settled on joining the Odd Fellows.  There was just one problem, however: he had no way of finding a lodge to join.  Various emails to addresses he had found online went unanswered for years until finally, in 2019, he visited the IOOF Subreddit and made contact with an Odd Fellow in a neighboring state who was able to help him make contact with his local lodge.  Despite all the challenges in making contact with the lodge, he was able to join in October of that year.  Since that time he's become an ardent Odd Fellow with a zeal for promoting the Order.  Instead of being bitter about his struggles to join Odd Fellowship, he is willing to share his story in hopes of making lodges more visible to their communities so that others may have an easier path to joining.  He gives us a glimpse into the growth of his lodge, Kanawha #25 in West Virginia, as well as his Encampment and Canton.  No lodge was nominated for a Shoutout this episode so all of you listeners are encouraged to send in your nominations.  In the Odd Podge, Scott tells about his search for former Odd Fellows Halls in Arkansas' capital; Ainsle shares the news about the Goat Riders, a booster club for the DeMoulin Museum in Greenville, IL; Gary shares his efforts to charter a new lodge in West Virginia; and Toby tells about the Past Grand Master who was remembered in history as "Washington's One-Day Governor."

RMM-Episode 032: Marbury v. Madison, how a PGM of Virginia established the doctrine of Judicial Review

In this episode Ben reads Chief Justice Marshall's opinion in Marbury v. Madison. This case founded the concept of Judicial Review integral to our Separation of Powers; a quote from Marshall is written in stone in the Supreme Court today: "It is emphatically the province and duty of the judicial department to say what the law is." Struggling to maintain legitimacy for the new Court (its first Chief Justice, John Jay, had already stated the Court lacked "energy, weight, and dignity"), Marshall, Past Grand Master of Virginia, cemented the ideal of Judicial Review almost by accident, maneuvering his opinion through a political minefield, to avoid an otherwise irreconcilable rift with the Executive. It is ironic that such expedience emerged so vital a tenet as the Separation of Powers.Marbury had come to the Court to compel the new Secretary of State, James Madison, to deliver his commission papers, for a Judgeship John Adams had granted him. After losing the election in 1800, Adams had appointed a slew of judges before Jefferson took office (the so-called "midnight judges"). Once in office, Jefferson appointed Madison Secretary of State and commanded him not to deliver any commissions to Adams' men. Marbury came to the Supreme Court for redress, not necessarily because of any legitimacy the fledgling Court was seen to possess , but because, before becoming its Chief Justice (appointed by Jefferson), John Marshall was Adams' Secretary of State to whom the duty of delivering the commission papers had properly devolved....Marshall's opinion is legendary - not only because of its emergence of Judicial Review, but, perhaps more importantly (though overlooked modernly) because he saved the Court in a political dodge.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/rockymountainmason)

Whence Came You? - Freemasonry discussed and Masonic research for today's Freemason

This week. we hear from one of the founders of the Illinois Lodge of Research, Alphonse Cerza, in his piece titled, “Work, Work, Work.” What does the American way of life have in parallel to the Masonic Lodge? What does Masonic unemployment mean for the profits of a Lodge? Then, We’ll read a piece from a Past Grand Master of Michigan, as he gives a parable of a Cherry Tree. Each branch of a tree-- a tree that represents Freemasonry where each branch represents an independent body. When those branches get full of fruit, fall, and break off, what happens? What other parallels can we draw? Find out this, and a whole lot more, coming right up. Stay Tuned. They also outline some of the ways in which communication has been less than successful in Odd Fellowship, like the challenges some people face when they contact lodges to join.

Yes, Grand Masters have controversial opinions. Usually, we don't get to hear them. Today, we do. Buckle up. Those in power must watch their tongue. It can be almost dangerous for someone in a high office to share controversial opinions. We see this in politics, civil & charitable organizations, and of course, social & fraternal bodies like ours. If a sitting Grand Master were to voice a radical opinion it could have quite an impact on the Fraternity, and maybe not for the better. However, when the word "Past" gets added to your Grand Lodge title, and there IS no higher office left for you to seek... well, then, I suppose, you're free to tell it like it is. And that is exactly what Most Worshipful Iacobucci does in part 2 of our conversation. Being Grand Master has its perks, eh? Most Worshipful Peter Iacobucci and Right Worshipful Gil Fontes are the junior Past Grand Master and Past Grand Marshal of the Grand Lodge of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. They join your hosts Darrell and Bryan on this special two-part adventure to share their story, their journey, and their thoughts. In this episode - part 2 - things get a little more interesting. MW Iacobucci shares his thoughts on the personalities of the Grand Masters of Rhode Island who came before him, and what was necessary or useful then vs. the approach needed during his term. He goes further, sharing his thoughts on how best to rule and govern both as Grand Master and as District Deputy Grand Master. Our esteemed guests share their views on the differences between jurisdictions, and how it affects everything from daily operation & ideology, to issues like innovation, safety & guns in the Lodge, and even women in the Lodge. Finally, we learn how MW Iacobucci and RW Fontes got roped into higher office in the first place, and how the future looks.   What's in this episode: MW Iacobucci’s thoughts on personalities of past GM’s in RI His thoughts on how best to rule and govern as Grand Master and District Deputy Grand Master - and how NOT to Differences between jurisdictions yesterday, today, and tomorrow, including Day to day operation Ideology Innovation Safety and guns in Lodge And women in the Lodge And lastly, how MW Iacobucci (and RW Fontes) actually got roped in to office in the first place. What's it take to be Grand Master? Well, we asked an ACTUAL Grand Master (and Grand Marshal) exactly that. Their answers, insights, and opinions may surprise you. The reality is - there's a lot to it. Many Masons may view the Grand Master as the absolute power and authority of a given Masonic Jurisdiction. Others may view him as a roadblock to progress, or an anchor they must drag on the way to positive change. Some, perhaps new Masons, may even view him as some untouchable, mythical, unicorn-like being atop a glorious, glowing pedestal. The truth is, it's not quite like any of that. They discuss how the pivotal situations and choices that brought them to Masonry. We learn about Grand Lodge of Rhode Island's interesting (and perhaps unique) progressive grand officer line. RW Fontes also delves into the real role of a Grand Marshal, and how essential it is to a Grand Master. They share their rare perspective on how a bird's eye view of Masonry compares to Blue Lodge thought processes. And finally, MW Iacobucci shares his perspective on issues facing lodges, and what the role of the Grand Lodge & Grand Master SHOULD be in aiding with those issues (vs. what most Masons think it should be).   What's in this episode: MW Peter Iacobucci and RW Gil Fontes, junior Past Grand Master and Past Grand Marshal of The Grand Lodge of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, join us to discuss: How they came to Masonry, and their journey through the Grand Line How the the progression of officers in the Grand Lodge of Rhode Island works The real role of the Grand Marshal Taking the big picture view of Masonry vs living on the “blue lodge ground level” MW Iacobucci’s perspective on issues facing lodges, and what the role of Grand Lodge & the Grand Master should be vs what most Masons think it is… and what the Grand Master thinks it is.
