The Shift to Feed Efficiency-Based Herd Management: Driving Profitability with Advanced Data with Dr. Veronica Shabtai, Afimilk; Emily Starceski, ADK Dairy; Shane St. Cyr, ADK Dairy; Walt Cooley, Progressive Dairy Publishing

This episode was recorded in Reno, Nevada for the 2025 Western Dairy Management Conference. Dr. Shabtai gives an overview of her presentation. Afimilk has a new technology that includes a feed efficiency sensor to determine eating, rumination, heat stress monitoring and more. The Feed Efficiency Service combined with the AfiCollar can estimate dry matter intake, which, when combined with Afimilk's milk meter data, yields an efficiency value of milk income over feed cost for each cow. She details how the algorithm works to predict intake and some of the challenges faced during the development of this technology. The algorithm was developed with Holsteins, but a Jersey algorithm is nearing completion. (5:33)Shane and Emily share some of their experiences with beta-testing the Feed Efficiency technology on-farm to evaluate, including animal-to-animal variation and variation in different stages of lactation. The panel discusses how genomics could pair with this data to aid in selection decisions. (9:21)Walt asks Dr. Shabtai to share how the company took the technology from research facilities to commercial farms, and asks Shane and Emily to share how the technology has proven itself on-farm. (13:11)Shane notes that they've had a handle on the milk side of the efficiency equation of individual cows for a while, but they didn't know much about the feed intake side of the equation. This technology allows for that. Shane also shares how this technology adds another tool to their dairy's sustainability toolbox.  (18:50)Walt asks both producers to share a metric that they thought was important before, but now that we have more knowledge and technology, it might not be as important as they thought. Shane's pick is starch level in corn silage, and Emily's is percent pregnant by 150 days in milk. (21:18)Dr. Shabtai shares the basics that a producer would need to implement this technology. She details a few things that have changed and will change about the product based on data from beta testing and notes there are always new things to see and find on-farm. (22:59)Scott asks Shane and Emily what metric they'd like to measure that they can't measure yet. Shane wonders if there would be a way for AI to compile weather and market data to assist with milk or feedstuff contracting decisions. Emily would like to be able to use more on-farm technology to help manage people. She shares how the data she has now allows her to see different improvements that could be implemented for different milking shifts. Shane talks about need-to-know information versus neat-to-know information. (26:35)The panel discusses how the technology is updated through software rather than hardware when new versions are available. They also share some tips for implementing the software on-farm. Walt asks each panelist their “I wonder if…” question. (29:58)The panel wraps up with their take-home thoughts, and Dr. Shabtai shares where farmers can learn more about Afimilk's feed efficiency technology by visiting afimilk.com. Welcome to Embrace Shabbat. The Gemara in Masechet Shabbat 118b teaches: אָמַר רַבִּי יוֹחָנָן: כׇּל הַמְשַׁמֵּר שַׁבָּתכְּהִלְכָתוֹ, אֲפִילּוּ עוֹבֵד עֲבוֹדָה זָרָה [כְּדוֹר] אֱנוֹשׁ — מוֹחֲלִין לוֹ RabbiYochanan said: anyone who observes Shabbat properly, even if he worshipsidolatry, as in the generation of Enosh, he will be forgiven. Rashi explains that Enosh is specificallymentioned because in his generation, the people began serving avodah zara . The Rambam explains thedriving force behind Enosh's sin: at first, the people of the generationrecognized G-d's greatness, and felt that honoring His celestial beings wouldserve as a means of honoring Him, as the heavenly bodies serve as intermediariesthat assist G-d. With time, however, people forgot G-d- the original Source-and began serving the heavenly bodies themselves, thinking that the stars andmoon were controlling the world on their own. How, according to Rabbi Yochanan, can Shabbatserve as a counterforce to this belief? While Shabbat may serve as a reminder that G-d created the world in six daysand rested on the seventh, that belief does not counteract idolatry; a personmay believe that G-d created the world and put it in the hands ofintermediaries, with whom He wants us to communicate. How does Shabbat provethat a person should deal directly with G-d? The Sefer AhavatEitan, a commentary on the Ein Yaakov ,explains that when a person keeps Shabbat, he attests to the fact that G-dcontinues to run and supervise the world. Observing Shabbat demands of a personto put their parnassah in the handsof Hashem and trust that He will continue to sustain them. Therefore, when aperson keeps Shabbat, he attests to the fact that HaKadosh Baruch Hu deals withhim directly without any intermediary. The bracha of Shabbat only comes through refraining fromworking. On a deeper level, the Yearot Devash teaches that each day of the week has a differentmazal and the mazal of Shabbat is "Shabtai", the mazal of destruction. Peoplebelieved that order to appease this mazal, a person must be in a sad andmelancholy mood. Therefore, the Jewish people were happy and celebrated Shabbatto show that they were not influenced by the mazal, because they dealt directlywith HaKadosh Baruch Hu. When a person keeps Shabbat properly, he demonstratesthat he does not need to worry about mazalot or intermediaries, as they deal with HaKadosh Baruch Hu directly. It is for these reasons that Shabbat is a dayof strengthening Emunah. In addition to refraining from the 39 melachot , a person must guard Shabbat. A person can accomplishthis by pondering Hashem's hashgacha and supervision- that He deals with uswithout an intermediary. A person may think about the fact that they do notneed to worry about mazalot, which today refers to natural forces that appearto have some strength, because they don't actually do anything. May theseEmunah lessons strengthen us with every single Shabbat. Have a Shabbat Shalom, and bez'h throughkeeping Shabbat, our sins will be forgiven.

Fitch Ratings affirmed Israel's A+ credit rating with a stable outlook on Wednesday, while at the same time warning that the government's planned judicial changes could have a “negative impact” on the country's credit profile. A group of economists wrote another open letter this morning protesting the judicial overhaul. Who was signed on? In the past day, a plethora of Israeli leaders have made public speeches for and against the judicial overhaul, from President Isaac Herzog, Justice Minister Yariv Levin, National Unity head Benny Gantz and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Goren explains what conclusions can be drawn after hearing all these voices? And finally, Keller Lynn fills us in on the current status of the judicial overhaul legislation. Discussed articles include: As protests sweep nation, police use aggressive means to clear Tel Aviv rally Officers said to accuse top cop Shabtai of using force to impress Ben Gvir Sara Netanyahu accosted by protesters at Tel Aviv hair salon, extricated by police Fitch affirms Israel's A+ rating, but warns of impact of planned judicial overhaul Netanyahu compares Tel Aviv protesters to settlers who set fire to Huwara Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
May One Instruct a Non-Jew to Perform a Torah Violation of Shabbat in an Unusual Manner?

Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour

Play Episode Listen Later May 17, 2022 6:52

The Halacha permits instructing a non-Jew to perform a Melacha for the sake of a Misva only in a case of "Shvut D'shvut"- a double Rabbinic prohibition. Asking the non-Jew in itself is a Rabbinic prohibition, but the Melacha he is being asked to perform must also be only a Rabbinic violation. The double leniency of two Rabbinic prohibitions allows instructing the non-Jew. Therefore, asking a non-Jew to turn on a light, even for a Misva such as learning Torah, is prohibited, since turning on lights, according to most authorities, is a Torah prohibition. However, the Pri Megadim (R. Yosef Ben Meir Teomim, 1727-1792, Poland-Germany) has a Hidush (novel Halachic approach) and permits instructing a non-Jew to perform a Torah prohibition with a Shinui (in an unusual fashion). He applies this to telling a non-Jew to pick an Etrog off the tree (A Torah violation) with his teeth (a Shinui) to perform the Misva of Lulav and Etrog. The Shach (R. Shabtai b. Meir HaKohen, 1621–1662, Eastern Europe) in his Nekudot HaKasef (198:18) deals with a case of a woman who needs to immerse in the Mikveh on Friday night forgot to cut her nails before Shabbat. He permits her to instruct a non-Jew to cut her nails with a Shinui. A practical example would be telling a non-Jew to turn on the lights by flicking the switch with his elbow in order for the Jew to learn Torah. All these cases are permitted since a Melacha is only a Torah prohibition if performed in the standard method. Even if a Jew would turn on the light switch with his elbow, it would only be a Rabbinic prohibition. Therefore, performing an act classified as a Torah prohibition in an unusual fashion constitutes a "Shvut D'shvut."The Mishna Berura (Rav Yisrael Meir Kagan of Radin, 1839-1933), concur with this ruling, whereas the Melahayich Omnayich cites Rav Elyashiv as being stringent. Hacham Ovadia (in Hazon Ovadia) and Hazon David rules in accordance with the lenient opinion. This leniency is a solution for the elderly who live on high floors in a building and are unable to walk down all the stairs to attend Bet Knesset. While it is prohibited to instruct a non-Jew to operate the elevator on their behalf, it would be permitted to tell the non-Jew to press the button with a Shinui, such as with their elbow. The elderly person would also be permitted to ascend in the elevator after Tefila in the same manner. Even though he has already completed the Misva of Tefila, remaining in the lobby for the rest of Shabbat is considered Sa'ar (suffering) which is tantamount to a Misva. When applying leniencies such as this, Hacham David recommends instructing the non-Jew before Shabbat. It should be emphasized the leniency only applies to cases of Misva or Sa'ar (suffering), but not to someone who wants a light to read secular books and magazines!SUMMARYIt is permitted to instruct a non-Jew on Shabbat to turn on a light with his elbow to enable someone to learn Torah or pray.

Welcome to Embrace Shabbat. The Gemara in Masechet Shabbat 118b teaches: אָמַר רַבִּי יוֹחָנָן: כׇּל הַמְשַׁמֵּר שַׁבָּת כְּהִלְכָתוֹ, אֲפִילּוּ עוֹבֵד עֲבוֹדָה זָרָה [כְּדוֹר] אֱנוֹשׁ — מוֹחֲלִין לוֹ Rabbi Yochanan said: anyone who observes Shabbat properly, even if he worships idolatry, as in the generation of Enosh, he will be forgiven. Rashi explains that Enosh is specifically mentioned because in his generation, the people began serving avodah zara . The Rambam explains the driving force behind Enosh's sin: at first, the people of the generation recognized G-d's greatness, and felt that honoring His celestial beings would serve as a means of honoring Him, as the heavenly bodies serve as intermediaries that assist G-d. With time, however, people forgot G-d- the original Source- and began serving the heavenly bodies themselves, thinking that the stars and moon were controlling the world on their own. How, according to Rabbi Yochanan, can Shabbat serve as a counterforce to this belief? While Shabbat may serve as a reminder that G-d created the world in six days and rested on the seventh, that belief does not counteract idolatry; a person may believe that G-d created the world and put it in the hands of intermediaries, with whom He wants us to communicate. How does Shabbat prove that a person should deal directly with G-d? The Sefer Ahavat Eitan, a commentary on the Ein Yaakov , explains that when a person keeps Shabbat, he attests to the fact that G-d continues to run and supervise the world. Observing Shabbat demands of a person to put their parnassah in the hands of Hashem and trust that He will continue to sustain them. Therefore, when a person keeps Shabbat, he attests to the fact that HaKadosh Baruch Hu deals with him directly without any intermediary. The bracha of Shabbat only comes through refraining from working. On a deeper level, the Yearot Devash teaches that each day of the week has a different mazal and the mazal of Shabbat is “Shabtai”, the mazal of destruction. People believed that order to appease this mazal, a person must be in a sad and melancholy mood. Therefore, the Jewish people were happy and celebrated Shabbat to show that they were not influenced by the mazal, because they dealt directly with HaKadosh Baruch Hu. When a person keeps Shabbat properly, he demonstrates that he does not need to worry about mazalot or intermediaries, as they deal with HaKadosh Baruch Hu directly. It is for these reasons that Shabbat is a day of strengthening Emunah. In addition to refraining from the 39 melachot , a person must guard Shabbat. A person can accomplish this by pondering Hashem's hashgacha and supervision- that He deals with us without an intermediary. A person may think about the fact that they do not need to worry about mazalot, which today refers to natural forces that appear to have some strength, because they don't actually do anything. May these Emunah lessons strengthen us with every single Shabbat. Have a Shabbat Shalom, and bez'h through keeping Shabbat, our sins will be forgiven.

Computer software has been an integral part of our lives and the global economy for at least the last 35 years. Interestingly, the space environment, by comparison, has only recently become “software-defined” — with programmable satellites, robotics, AI, and machine learning becoming more commonplace in orbit. The demand for significant processing power, storage and better intelligence has simultaneously created a huge new market for space tech companies. In this episode, Ramon.Space CEO Avi Shabtai joins us to explain the software-defined space revolution. Shabtai, whose startup aims to bring supercomputing and a variety of new in-space applications to satellites, outlines the unique challenges that the harsh space environment presents to software developers.  Shabtai and I also discuss the benefits of reprogrammable space technology, the evolution of the satellite control center, new space-based applications, troubleshooting space software, and the job market for space software engineering talent.

Josh shares some of the techniques they're using to maintain organisation-wide narratives around user-centred innovation, from creating comic books to tapping into the design skills of shop floor employees. The conversation goes on to explore how Lowe's is combining applied neuroscience and more traditional user research techniques to get a clearer sense of people's reactions to pioneering technology - like robotic exoskeletons - as well as Josh's own journey from creative agencies to designing one of the first augmented reality games with a Star Wars-themed Laser Tag gun. Host Marcela Sulak reads Aharon Shabtai's poem 'Our Land' (translated by Peter Cole), which features a kind of 'afterlife' Tel Aviv: ... Soon we will all / meet in the Tel Aviv below—Weinstein the milkman, / and Haim the iceman,Solganik / and the staff at the dry-goods co-op:Hannah and Frieda and Tzitron; / and the one-armed manfrom the clothing store / at the cornernear Café Ditze... Aharon Shabtai was born in 1939 in Tel Aviv and spent his childhood on Kibbutz Merhavia. He’s the brother of Yaakov Shabtai, author of Past Continuous. His poetry’s incredibly intimate references to his personal life have made Shabtai a controversial figure among contemporary Israeli poets and critics. He’s also an outspoken critic of Israeli policies in the Palestinian territories, and of human rights violations. Here's the ending of 'Nostalgia' (translated by Peter Cole): And when it’s all over,my dear, dear reader,on which benches will we have to sit, those of us who shouted “Death to the Arabs!”and those who claimed they “didn’t know”?   Texts: War & Love, Love & War: New and Selected Poems, translated by Peter Cole (New Directions) October 29, 2010.
