Mike Ferguson in the Morning 11-22-24 Mark Mix from National Right To Work talks about a letter he sent to President Trump urging him to reject a ploy by Big Labor to put Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer of Oregon in charge of overseeing the nation's labor policy. Chavez-DeRemer is a union boss lackey who sold out American workers' individual rights during her tenure. As Mark's letter explains, Chavez-DeRemer tried to ingratiate the union political machine to boost her political fortunes, most notably by co-sponsoring the so-called “PRO Act,” which would expose millions more workers nationwide to the threat of being forced to pay union dues or be fired by eliminating state Right to Work laws nationwide. But her attempt to line union bosses' pockets with forced union dues didn't win over voters, who threw her out of office. The PRO Act's other provisions provide more than enough evidence for why Chavez-DeRemer would jeopardize worker freedom if installed as Labor Secretary: The Act would wipe out the gig economy by subjecting independent contractors to union boss power, it would give union bosses far more power to seize power in a workplace without even letting workers vote on the matter, and it would gag employers during a union organizing drive so employees only hear union bosses' side of the story, and much more. the latest US Labor Dept jobs out today show a rapidly deteriorating jobs market. Not just in the media oft-cited CES (large corporations) jobs data but in the Labor Dept's second CPS survey that picks up smaller businesses which is retreating even faster. CES jobs for October rose a mere 12,000. (And previous months were revised down to an average jobs growth of only 67,000/mo. July-Sept. Even worse, the CPS jobs survey showed -220,000 net employment fall in October. Full time jobs continued to disappear while part time rose. Other negative job stats were discussed in the show. Slowing jobs picture contradicts media hype the economy was doing great in third quarter. The second half of the show discusses the 3 existential issues in the current US election being totally ignored by both Harris and Trump: the massive and accelerating US budget deficits, national debt and interest payments on the debt, the big Austerity spending cuts coming in 2025 regardless who wins the election, and the BRICS challenge to the very foundations of the US global economy empire that is developing further as well with 13 new BRICS members joining the current 10. (For more on my analysis of the BRICS check out my Youtube interview along with Indian economist, S.L.Kanthan, at https://www.youtube.com/live/veY2FoKsyuY )

Today's show focuses on upcoming November election. The status in the swing states is reviewed. How the candidates stand on the two key issues in the election per polls: Economy and Decline of Democracy in USA. Trump v. Harris proposals on issues appealing to working class voters in the key 3 northern swing states: taxes on tips, overtime pay, social security income, SALT, interest tax deductions on auto loans. The real condition of inflation since 2019. Conflicting stats on real wages and take home pay. The Labor Dept latest jobs report. The silent issue neither candidate is talking about: runaway deficits and national debt and nearly $1 trillion/yr interest payments on the debt now. Why whoever wins in November will propose severe Austerity programs. How the BRICS expansion and new financial world system represents an existential threat to US global economic hegemony and empire and how it will blowback on US economy. Show concludes with discussion how both parties are engaged in destruction of US democracy.
This Day in Legal History: GDR EstablishedOn October 7, 1949, the German Democratic Republic (GDR), commonly known as East Germany, was officially established. This marked the formal division of Germany into two separate states after World War II. The creation of East Germany came in response to the formation of the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) earlier that year, in May 1949. Backed by the Soviet Union, the GDR was a socialist state governed by the Socialist Unity Party (SED), and its formation signaled the deepening divide between the Eastern and Western blocs during the Cold War.East Germany's legal and political structure was heavily influenced by Soviet-style socialism, with a focus on state control over the economy and a one-party system that suppressed political opposition. The GDR also became notorious for its secret police, the Stasi, which played a significant role in monitoring and controlling the population. Over time, East Germany built the Berlin Wall in 1961, a physical symbol of the broader ideological and geopolitical divisions of the Cold War.The existence of two Germanys, one capitalist and the other socialist, persisted for 41 years until the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, leading to German reunification in 1990. The legal creation of East Germany on this day stands as a key moment in the Cold War era, illustrating the legal and ideological rift that shaped post-war Europe. The U.S. Supreme Court begins its new term with a docket of significant cases, including disputes over guns, transgender rights, workplace discrimination, and online pornography. After a busy summer of emergency decisions, the Court's first case focuses on the Biden administration's appeal regarding "ghost guns," which can be purchased online and assembled without traceable serial numbers. Another key case involves Oklahoma death row inmate Richard Glossip, who seeks a new trial amid questions about his conviction. Additional cases involve Tennessee's ban on gender-affirming care for minors, workplace discrimination claims brought by "majority background" workers, and the authority of federal agencies like the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and FDA. The Court also faces potential involvement in election disputes surrounding the 2024 presidential race. The fast-food chain alleges that the suppliers colluded to fix and raise beef prices by reducing the supply of slaughter-ready cattle, which artificially elevated prices. The alleged conspiracy, which began in 2015, was aimed at recovering profit margins impacted by years of drought. McDonald's claims that the suppliers limited production by closing plants and restraining market supply. The lawsuit seeks a declaratory judgment, damages three times the amount of losses sustained, and a permanent injunction to prevent future collusion. The U.S. Department of Justice had already investigated price-fixing in 2020, and testimonies from cattle ranchers have reportedly confirmed the conspiracy. During this period, the suppliers saw record profits, with JBS reporting a significant revenue increase between 2014 and 2021.McDonald's Says Tyson and Other Suppliers Fixed Beef Prices This is a public episode. At the beginning of this week, the Labor Dept.'s new law relating to independent gig workers went into effect. This new rule imposes 6 criteria that employers must use to determine the classification of a worker as independent contractor, or full employee. What is the problem? This regulation may eliminate the option for independent workers to find good work at a good wage. Amanda Griffith from Reason joins the show.
S&P Futures are displaying slight gains this morning ahead of this morning Non-Farms Payrolls report from the Labor Dept which could shed some light on the state of U.S. labor demand and influence how the Federal Reserve approaches upcoming interest rate decisions. Fed Chair Jerome Powell, meanwhile, says policymakers are "not far" from having the confidence that inflation is sustainably easing, fueling hopes for rate cuts this year. Fed Chair appeared dovish in his appearance before the Senate yesterday. Bidens' State of the Union speech was more political and did not contain any significant items that would drive markets today. In Europe, markets are slightly higher as the ECB displayed a dovish tone at the conclusion of the ECB meeting yesterday. Oil prices have reversed course and are now trading lower.

The first job report in the US this year showed positive figures with 353,000 jobs. According to the Labor Dept, average hourly pay also jumped, while the unemployment rate held steady at 3.7%.It's almost double analysts' forecasts, and experts say this indicates the strength of the labor market and the economic growth. Jobs were added in the retail trade, professional and business services, in hospitals as well as nursing and many more. And yet, there are some industries in the US where lack of labor is affecting many businesses. Also, how much will affect local businesses a new trade deal in Northern Ireland, and why former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak is set to get out of prison earlier than expected.

(6/1/23) The Employment Report has had an amazing string of "beats" by a large margin, and for a protracted period of time, so tomorrow's employment numbers for May could have significant impact on the Fed's forward plans and the markets' mood. The anomaly has been how employment has remained strong despite Fed efforts to tame the economy. There IS slowing on the Manufacturing side of the economy, but not so in the Services sector, which comprises 80% of the economy, and represents the lower-end of wage earners. Yesterday's JOLTS report was strong, suggesting tomorrow's Labor Dept. report will also exceed expectations, confounding the Fed's efforts to bring down inflation by slowing the economy. "Sticky" Inflation remains higher than the Fed would prefer, and is not on a trajectory to weaken anytime soon. Fed futures are betting on more rate hikes in coming months. Dr. Rasmus discusses today's Jobs report in detail, dedicating the entire show to an analysis of the report. Is the 528,000 reported ‘new' jobs and only 3.5% unemployment rate accurate? Rasmus explains the various statistical operations on the actual raw jobs data that results by the Labor Dept. surveys in order to arrive at these numbers. How seasonality, new business formation, and other statistical manipulation on the ‘raw actual jobs data' results in artificially robust monthly numbers and why there are important contradictions between the two jobs surveys employed by the government in the report. Also discussed is why the reported 4.5% gain in workers' earnings are really a -4.6% decline in inflation adjusted earnings; why other government report stats like labor force participation rate and employment to population survey show no strong job growth trend; and why the reported 3.5% unemployment rate is really 7.2% even according to the report's other tables. Also discussed is the significance of an increase of 800,000 in part time employment in just the past month and data in Table A-8 of the report showing a decline in total employment since May 2022—from 156,180,000 to 156,000,000—contradicting the reported 528,000 new jobs last month and the 372,000 in June before.

Dr. Rasmus explains exactly what Artificial Intelligence is, how it so far has penetrated business and industries, and what are the various forecasts of its potential impact on jobs the rest of this decade and beyond. The ideology, misrepresentations, and falsifications surrounding the concept: will it produce as many jobs as it destroys? Like previous industrial technology revolutions. Or is it different this time? What occupations will be especially hit hard by AI? How will the AI and nextgen technology revolution now underway affect the future of work and employment in the USA? Dr. Rasmus also briefly reviews last month' job figures reported this morning by the Labor Dept. Is it really a ‘tight labor market' being messaged by the mainstream media? Also noted is the Federal Reserve chair, Jerome Powell's, statement this past week that the Fed will start tapering and raising rates earlier than reported previously. What does that mean for the economic recovery?

Pfizer has announced a new pill to treat COVID -- which could save thousands of lives. The U.K. has approved another COVID-fighting pill, this one from Merck. The White House made January 4th a deadline for larger companies to get their workers vaccinated, or implement weekly testing. Some Republican governors have already threatened to sue over the measure. The House of Representatives may finally vote this morning on two of the president's other priorities: a giant infrastructure package, and a larger social spending bill covering everything from child care to climate change. For the first time, we are seeing real world evidence of how well one HPV vaccine can prevent one of the most common cancers in women. The Biden administration is suing the state of Texas over a new voting law that Governor Greg Abbott signed in September. There were scary scenes near Cancun at a resort popular with American tourists. Mexican police say a drug gang killed two rivals yesterday. The memorial service for retired General Colin Powell will be held today at Washington's National Cathedral. We're watching a powerful storm system that could cause major flooding -- along the coasts of Georgia and the Carolinas. The NBA is investigating new allegations of racism and misogyny -- against the owner of the Phoenix Suns.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Dr. Rasmus addresses the state of working class America this labor day 2021. Creeping austerity is the defining term, as unemployment benefits are being cut, rent assistance not distributed & rent moratorium ending, job creation rapidly falling off by late summer in today's Labor Dept. jobs report, child care payments due to expire in December, student loan forbearance in January, and no new stimulus on the horizon. Rasmus cites the 11.2m losing unemployment benefits and debunks the Republican argument with data that workers aren't returning to work because of too generous unemployment benefits. The real reasons why many aren't returning to work are noted. Why landlords are scuttling $46B rent assistance while the Federal Reserve continues $120/B every month in free money to bankers and investors. Dr. Rasmus then dissects today's Labor Dept. jobs report for August and explains why only 235,000 jobs were ‘created' last month after 750,000 a month on average in the previous 3 months. Why the unemployment rate is at least double the official 5.2%. Why the actual employed numbers (not manipulated via seasonal adjustment) in August showed a decline in actual total employment by -364,000. Why the media and politicians always ‘cherry pick' the most optimistic statistic from the monthly job reports and ignore other contrary data in the same reports.
The huge sums of cash Congress allocated for pandemic unemployment assistance went a long way toward staving off an economic collapse during the worst days of the crisis. But the huge surge in claims through state unemployment agencies also highlighted weaknesses in the system — weaknesses the Labor Department is now trying to help states fix. Michele Evermore is senior policy adviser on unemployment insurance at the Labor Department. She talked with Federal Drive with Tom Temin about some of the efforts now underway, with the help of about $2 billion in grants under the American Rescue Plan.
In today's Federal Newscast, the Department of Labor will offer virtual seminars throughout August to prepare for federal contract minimum wage increases.

Dr. Rasmus addresses the rising chorus from conservative politicians, media, and ‘paid for’ economists that the Fiscal stimulus bills being proposed ($1.8T American Rescue Plan, $2.2T American (Infrastructure) Jobs Plan, and $1T American Families Plan) will soon overheat the US economy and cause rapid rise in inflation. What are the actual forces driving/not driving prices today in 2021? What’s wrong with the way the US government estimates inflation? Why does it underestimate it in order to overestimate real GDP growth? Why are the government’s methodology for estimating inflation kept a ‘secret’ from the public? Dr. Rasmus also comments on today’s Labor Dept. Jobs Report that missed forecasts of jobs created in April by more than 1 million. What’s going on? And what about that phony argument that workers are getting too much unemployment benefits, causing them to refuse to return to work at poverty level minimum wages ($7.25/hr. or $2.13/hr. for restaurant workers). Check out Dr. Rasmus’s latest print publication, “US 1st Quarter GDP: Recovery or Just Another Rebound’, at http://jackrasmus.com.
: Dr. Rasmus reviews the three main developments of the past week: today’s jobs report showing economy not creating sufficient jobs, the Biden fiscal aid stimulus bill stalled in Congress, and financial asset bubbles continuing to grow, including the financial speculators’ internecine war over Gamestop and other assets. What’s in the Labor Dept. jobs report that shows job situation even worse than the headline of 49,000 jobs created in January? What’s behind the Biden-Dems effort to push for the $1.9t stimulus ‘American Rescue Plan’ and why is unconomist, Larry Summers, again trying to get the Dems to spend less (as he did in 2009)? Finally, why are bubbles in stocks once again growing and analysts predicting a 15% market correction coming?

Agencies received tens a billions of dollars from the CARES Act to ramp up their IT capabilities. Nearly five months later the Labor Department said it's seeing an accelerated pace to its IT modernization projects. Those include greater adoption of digital signatures and a shift away from paper-based process. Labor's also seeing a rise in automation to make better sense of its workplace injury data. For more on the status of those projects, Federal News Network's Jory Heckman spoke with Labor's Chief Information Officer Gundeep Ahluwalia on Federal Drive with Tom Temin.

Dr. Rasmus explains why the official U-3 unemployment figure of 13.3% is a gross misrepresentation of the unemployment rate. What’s wrong with the U-3. Plus the Labor Dept’s own admission that the 13.3% is distorted by the questions it has asked the jobless. Why the Labor Force participation Rate and Employment to Population ration show little improvement in the jobless situation. Why there is a brief phase of 2-3 months when the economy will not keep falling but level off and maybe recover 20% of the loss of the past few months, but why a W-Shape recovery longer term is on the agenda. Why most jobs won’t come back or return only slowly over the next 10 yrs. Dr. Rasmus concludes with some commentary on his latest blog publication, ‘Confronting Institutional Racism’, and why (and how) the demonstrations and protests need to expand and grow organizationally, in terms of alliances, and in its demands—or it will go the way of the ‘Occupy’ movement of 2011 and ‘yellow vests’ in France in recent years. There is a correlation between market performance and the economy, despite the divergent action of recent weeks during the COVID-19 Pandemic. RIA Advisors Chief Investment Strategist Lance Roberts parses the numbers in the latest Labor Dept. report on Unemployment, and posits chilling questions about the results as presented---and asks who's NOT being included in the tally?
Dr. Rasmus explains why a V-shape recovery from the current crisis will not happen, despite all the marketing spin by Trump, politicians and myopic economists. The show today addresses first the employment numbers reported by the Labor Dept. Rasmus explains those numbers don’t include the last two weeks of March and the 10m workers filing for unemployment benefits. The official unemployment rate of 4.4% reported is thus a gross understatement (and also useless since it always states job losses for only full time employed). Why aren’t those still working being rewarded for hazard work is the next theme of the show, based on Dr. Rasmus’ recently published ‘Covid-19 and the Forgotten Working Class’. The last half hour addresses the theme why a V shape recovery is not going to happen. Rasmus explains why uncertainty and negative expectations by business and households alike will mean more cash hoarding, savings instead of consumption, debt paydown, slow recovery of bank lending, decline in business and household demand for credit, global trade collapse, and business cost cutting carried forward—all mean a slow and tenuous recovery of business investment and consumer spending. Two additional ‘wildcards’ that could depress recovery still further as well might be politicians returning to austerity in 2021 to offset the massive deficits ($6.7T) and $30T (from $22T) national debt + the Fed’s possible failure to prevent a financial crash in coming months. (Check out Dr. Rasmus’ blog posts on the economy today at jackrasmus.com).
When it comes to overseeing weird variations of retirement accounts, the IRS and Labor Department don't cooperate as closely as they should. That's the finding of the Government Accountability Office when it looked at prohibited transactions for Individual Retirement Accounts. Director of GAO's Education, Workforce and Income Security Team, Charles Jeszeck, joined Federal Drive with Tom Temin for the details.
Ep. 201 - The Curious Case of Don Blankenship, or as Rolling Stone Magazine called "The Dark Lord of Coal" and other's refer to the "Most Hated Man in West Virginia". This full-length interview covers the tragic day when Massey Energy's Upper Big Branch Mine in WV exploded killing 29 miners. After years of fighting increased regulation by the Obama Labor Dept., CEO Don Blankenship was indicted on four felony counts, and although all counts were dismissed, he was found guilty on a misdemeanor and served a year in prison. After being released, Don ran a Senate campaign losing the nomination to run against West Virginia Senator, Joe Manchin. It was during this campaign many considered his words racist and the media, both news and comedians, skewered him. One of the most enduring catch-phrases from this campaign, "Cocaine Mitch" referring to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, is still used today. This is a fascinating story where we hear the other side of a rather tarnished coin that involves union corruption and political malfeasance going up to the highest levels of the Obama Administration.https://youtu.be/FZNJeAobmyIIf you're enjoying the series, PLEASE Support #WhiskeyPolitics at http://paypal.me/mywhiskeypolitics. Starting today we will be answering your questions regarding the job search. We’ve been soliciting questions from subscribers on LinkedIn and social media regarding the job search and this weekly special episode will drop every Wednesday in the afternoon so make sure you’re following so you get the top tips. You can submit your questions to Findafitnow@gmail.com Today’s question is around how to negotiate a higher starting salary. The recently reported JOLT survey found there were 7.14 million job openings in the U.S in August. That's a record since the Labor Dept. started keeping track in 2000 and the national "quits rate" (yes, that's a thing) stayed unchanged at a strong 2.4%. That means workers are confident that if they leave one job, they'll be able to find another because there are now a record 902,000 more job openings than unemployed workers. What’s staggering is that there has only been a meesley 2.8% increase in pay around the country. You would think that employers would be paying more to hire the best talent. So what that means is that when taking a new job you may need to negotiate for a higher starting salary and you're in a great position because of these national stats.
