Dat de Vereniging Nederlandse Gemeenten het “voorbarig en risicovol” vindt dat de Tweede Kamer een einde wil maken aan de regionale samenwerkingsverbanden die werken aan de regionale energiestrategieën, de RES’en. HAN REIJNHOUT ( 1934 - 2024) Zijn overlijdensadvertentie las ik vanmorgen in de PZC. Niet van zijn familie maar van Stichting Behoud Hoogaars. Een advertentie, klein en weggestopt in een hoekje... Ik leerde Han kennen via Wilbert Weber, de toenmalige directeur van het Maritiem Muzeeum in Vlissingen. Hij stelde in 2010 een schitterende overzichtstentoonstelling samen met werk van Han onder de titel: Han Reijnhout, de man achter het detail. Op 75 jarige leeftijd kreeg Han niet alleen een expositie maar ook een boek met hoogtepunten uit zijn werk: Han Reijnhout, portret van een Zeeuws kunstenaar. Tekst: Gees R. Het interview was niet het makkelijkste van de vele gesprekken die ik voerde op mijn zoektocht naar mensen met een verhaal. Hij antwoordde beleefd op mijn vragen met korte one liners, soms uitvloeiend in een korte toelichting of anekdote. Dr Ruud Stelten, Flinders University Bad weather led Dutch ship into Western Australian coast The Dutch East India Company ship, the Zuytdorp, likely crashed into the shore of Western Australia due to a storm and not bad navigation, new research has found.   Published in the Journal of Maritime Archaeology, Flinders University archaeologists Dr Ruud Stelten and Professor Wendy van Duivenvoorde analysed ship logs, contemporary cartographic and navigational knowledge and weather patterns at the time in a bid to understand how the ship went down.   Four Dutch shipwrecks have been found off the coast of WA within the last century, with the Batavia and the horrors of its mutinous crew arguably the most famous of the collection.   Discovered in 1927 about 60km north of the WA coastal town of Kalbarri, and formally identified in 1958, the Zuytdorp was travelling from the Dutch port of Vlissingen on the way to Batavia, now present-day Jakarta, when it became lost at sea.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Af en toe worden we op onze eigen bijziendheid gewezen. Zoals nu, door de publicatie van de memoires van Angela Merkel. Ze was 16 jaar bondskanselier van Duitsland, werd in binnen- en buitenland op handen gedragen en gezien als de enige echte Europese leider, maar viel van haar voetstuk toen, vlak na haar aftreden, Rusland voor de tweede keer Oekraïne binnenviel. Ze had het allemaal fout gezien, en was zo ongeveer medeschuldig aan Poetins oorlog.  Ze hield in 2008 toetreding van Oekraïne tot de NAVO tegen. Ze was mild toen Poetin in 2014 voor de eerste keer Oekraïne binnenviel en meende dat met de Minsk Akkoorden te kunnen oplossen. Ze bood, onder het motto ‘Wir schaffen das', in 2015 vluchtelingen een plekje onder de Duitse zon. Ze hield, tot grote woede van Donald Trump en Joe Biden, vast aan de import van goedkoop gas uit Rusland via de Nord Stream-pijpleiding. Ze probeerde, in de Duitse traditie sinds Willy Brandt, de relatie tussen Rusland en het Westen te redden. Applaus? Jazeker, toen wel. Nu wordt ze verguisd en snapt daar, zoals ze tegen de BBC zei, niets van. Het was immers allemaal in het Duitse, maar ook in het Europese belang geweest. Toch? Hoe zat het met ons zelf? Maakten wij ons in 2007 en 2008 druk over Oekraïens lidmaatschap van de NAVO, dat George W. Bush eiste en Angela Merkel bestreed? Waren wij het niet die in 2016 Poetin verwelkomden in de Amsterdamse Hermitage om 400 jaar betrekkingen te vieren? En waren wij het niet die in datzelfde jaar in een referendum tegen het EU-associatieverdrag met Oekraïne stemden? Was het niet de Gasunie – dus de Nederlandse staat – die voor 9 procent eigenaar was van Nord Stream, en dat belang pas in 2023 van de hand deed? Waren wij niet, net als Duitsland en andere Europese landen, verslaafd aan het goedkope Russische gas? En zijn er onder ons niet ook velen die Mutti Merkel stiekem best terug zouden willen, in plaats van de klungelende Olaf Scholz?  ‘Vrijheid' heet Merkels autobiografie. Grondig en volledig, zoals dat een Duitser betaamt – dus 700 pagina's lang. Ze is een markante vrouw. Duitsland glijdt economisch de afgrond in, met de catastrofale problemen bij Volkswagen als metafoor. Is dat allemaal haar schuld? En als dat zo is, waarom is ze dan 16 jaar ook door ons op handen gedragen? Was het onze bijziendheid? Of was het gemakzucht, want meerijden op de Duitse bagagedrager was makkelijk. Aflevering 4 van de PZC Voetbal Podcast staat gedeeltelijk in het teken van de Kustmarathon. IJzendijke-voetbalster Lieve van Vliet liep hem zaterdag. In 2021 was SHV goed voor een omzet van 20 miljard euro en bijna een miljard winst.Maar John koos zijn eigen weg. In 1975 stapte hij uit het familiebedrijf en begon voor zichzelf. Met een startkapitaal van 10.000 dollar bouwde hij BCD Travel, dat uitgroeide tot wereldwijd marktleider in zakelijk reizen. Voor corona, in 2019 maakte BCD Travel een omzet van ruim 27 miljard dollar.Naast BCD heeft Fentener van Vlissingen nog heel wat andere bedrijven en investeringen. De laatste jaren houdt Fentener van Vlissingen zich vooral met liefdadigheid bezig.Wie is toch de mens achter dit succesverhaal? Drie directeuren van overslagbedrijf Bulk Terminal Zeeland (BTZ) in de Vlissingse haven zitten vast vanwege drugshandel. De politie zette bij het onderzoek een vergaand middel in: 100 kilo cocaïne werd via het bedrijf ingevoerd door een infiltrant, die de directeuren 180.000 euro betaalde. De burgemeester van Vlissingen heeft nu besloten BTZ te sluiten, waardoor de 35 medewerkers op straat komen te staan.  We bespreken de situatie met Rik Bolt van Omroep Zeeland en Daan Schalck (CEO van North Sea Port).

African Parks is een relatief onbekende maar machtige organisatie die de volledige zeggenschap heeft over meer dan twintig nationale parken en reservaten in twaalf Afrikaanse landen. African Parks is gevestigd in Zuid-Afrika maar onderhoudt ook nauwe banden met Nederland. Niet alleen is de Postcode Loterij een van de trouwste donoren, de organisatie werd ruim twintig jaar geleden mede-opgericht door de Nederlandse zakenman Paul Fentener van Vlissingen die in de nadagen van zijn carrière iets goeds wilde doen voor de planeet. Of hij daarin geslaagd is? Journalist Olivier van Beemen deed onderzoek naar het heden en verleden van African Parks. Hij schreef het boek ‘Ondernemers in het wild', dat deze week verscheen en maakte samen met Katinka Baehr een tweedelige documentaire voor ons: De witte weldoeners van African Parks.

Een groot probleem in de havens van Rotterdam en Vlissingen betreft uithalers. Dit zijn vaak jonge jongens die worden gestuurd om containers uit te halen. Het Openbaar Ministerie probeert dit probleem hard aan te pakken door snel te vervolgen en forse straffen te eisen. By the start of the new millennium, Damen has grown to become the biggest shipyard in the Netherlands and is a strong international player. But there's one thing Damen hasn't managed yet: building naval ships.It's a market that requires a special approach: references and experience are crucial. Spotify hoopt met het duurdere abonnement meer inkomsten binnen te halen. Het is nog onduidelijk hoe veel duurder het HiFi-abonnement wordt.Verder in de Tech Update: Pro-Russische DDoS-aanvallers claimen opnieuw de website van een Nederlands havenbedrijf te hebben platgelegd. The story of wax print fabric begins not in Africa where the fabric is adored today, but on the island of Java in Indonesia. That's because, in the 18th century, a Dutch entrepreneur Pieter Fentener van Vlissingen received a curious piece of cloth from his uncle who lived on Java. It had been dyed by a Javanese artisan using a nibbed bamboo stick to create imperfect lines and dots that are set to the fabric with beeswax. Pieter sets about mechanising the technique and finds buyers in West and Central Africa. In the third episode of Torn, Gus Casely-Hayford sets out to find out if wax print fabric can really be considered African if the original design comes from Asia and the manufacturing process is the result of European industrialisation. He asks those who wear wax print in West and Central Africa what it means to them that their most recognisable fabric is a product of colonialism. From the Togolese businesswomen who set up workshops and imported printing machines to supply the region with wax print in the 1950s, to their foremothers who bartered with European fabric merchants in the 19th century, and the tailors who sew clothes for millions of people in West and Central Africa today, wax print is African. But the fact that none of the major wax print producers are fully African-owned has led some designers on the continent to shun its use in favour of indigenous fabrics. Het eerste boek van Follow the Money, geschreven door Ties Joosten, heeft de ondertitel: Waarom we de KLM al een eeuw lang tegen elke prijs in de lucht houden. Het boek schildert een interessant verhaal over de geschiedenis van het bedrijf dat we allemaal kennen en waar we allemaal waarschijnlijk wel een keer mee gevlogen hebben. Is het goed om trots op dit bedrijf te zijn of juist niet? Met dit boek de geschiedenis van onze nationale trots leren kennen is op zichzelf enorm interessant. Het boek geeft ook een beeld van waarom de overheid vandaag nog steeds zoveel geld in dit bedrijf pompt. Door het boek heen zie je telkens weer ondersteuning vanuit Den Haag voor de KLM met financiële middelen, waarbij telkens weer de belofte wordt gedaan dat dit de laatste keer is. Loze beloftes, waardoor beleggen in dit bedrijf tot nu toe een financiële zekerheid is geweest, want in nood springt de belastingbetaler bij. Waarbij verschillende ministers met slimme/slinkse trucjes telkens weer de financiering goedgekeurd krijgen in de Kamer. Uiteindelijk ging ik mezelf steeds meer de vraag stellen: moeten we wel doorgaan met het ondersteunen van de koninklijke en deze industrie? Maar daar komen we later op terug. Plesman is een hardwerkende zakenman die de eerste luchtvaartshow in Nederland georganiseerd krijgt en ondanks een dodelijk ongeval op de eerst dag er toch een succes van weet te maken. Een groep vooraanstaande Nederlandse industriëlen, onder wie Cor van Aalst, Frits Fentener van Vlissingen en Anton Kröller, smeden plannen voor de oprichting van een Nederlandse luchtvaartmaatschappij. De captains of industry zijn op dat moment al actief in de Koninklijke Nederlandse Vereniging voor Luchtvaart (KNVvL), die nu nog altijd bestaat. Prins Hendrik, de echtgenoot van koningin Wilhelmina, is de beschermheer van die vereniging. Niet geheel zonder eigenbelang willen deze industriëlen de luchtvaart in Nederland op gang brengen; ze zoeken een snelle verbinding met Nederlands-Indië. Allemaal hebben ze namelijk zakelijke belangen in Indië, en ze zien op dat moment de kolonie nog altijd als de hoeksteen van een Nederlands wereldrijk dat zich kan meten met dat van de Britten of Fransen.  In 1919 zegt Adriaan König, de minister van Waterstaat, een voor die tijd ongekend hoge subsidie van 75.000 gulden toe, en verklaart dat 'de regering nooit zal nalaten haar steun te verlenen aan de Nederlandse luchtvaart'. Deze uitspraak en subsidie markeert het begin van een eeuw lang de KLM ondersteunen tegen elke prijs. Liefde voor vliegen In het tweede hoofdstuk zie je de drang van Plesman om telkens weer de nieuwste vliegtuigen te kopen, waardoor oudere modellen versneld moeten worden afgeschreven. Aangezien het bedrijf geen of nauwelijks winst maakt komt het geld om deze drang van Plesman te financieren bijna altijd bij de belastingbetaler vandaan. Waarbij hij de Nederlandse vliegtuigbouwer Fokker niet ondersteunt. Een andere opvallende drijfveer van Plesman is dat hij het aantal vliegroutes wil blijven uitbreiden, ook al zijn ze niet winstgevend. Plesman lijkt bovenal een liefhebber van de luchtvaart en is minder een ondernemer of directeur en maakt zich niet druk over de winst. In de Tweede Wereldoorlog ondersteunt Plesman met de KLM de Duitsers, door het onderhoud van de Duitse vliegtuigen te verzorgen. De KLM krijgt daar ook voor betaald, net als de NS, die betaald wordt voor het transport van Joden. Dit klinkt wat vreemd, want twee van Alberts zonen vliegen bij de geallieerden tegen de Duitsers.
