Call it spring, some spring and some summer, or the most accurate but boring moniker, "Q2 2025," but the second quarter of this year saw the release of some VERY musically important titles in RPGFan's coverage. While Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 looms over everything in the RPG space for this time period, there were many notable other releases that also deserve your time, from RPGs to adventure games and visual novels.Oh, and classic RPG fans, just for the record, Mike would have included a song in honor of the overdue release of the Super Mario RPG (Remake + SNES) OST if he hadn't featured that game in our prior episode! As usual, we also have a longer list below of the many albums and releases we considered for this episode, so don't miss it!Featuring: Mike Salbato, Hilary Andreff; Edited by Mike SalbatoLinks for this episodeRose Betts' WebsiteMedieval Lofi on BandcampThe 8-Bit Big Band - "Orchestrator Emulator" Album (YouTube)Tracklist0:07:51 - The 80s Called (Thomas Regin) - Old Skies0:13:23 - Encounter Elite! Creating a musical score for interactive video games is like trying to hit a moving target. Luckily, Hans Zimmer's studio Bleeding Fingers has developed some clever strategies. I talk with their CEO Russell Emanuel and musicians Thom Lukas and Giovanni Rios about how they create innovative scores for games like Arknights, and why they thrive under creative limitations. Grammy-winning video game composer Winifred Phillips discusses how she builds adaptive scores that shift and respond to unpredictable gameplay. And video game historian and RPI professor William Gibbons explains why the technological limitations of ‘80s and ‘90s games actually fueled composers' creativity.   This week's episode is sponsored by The Perfect Jean. “In February of '21 I just randomly started. I just filmed a video, and I was like, ‘Okay, whatever.' Well, it was February 11th, and then February 15th we were on our way to pick up my dog, my puppy at the time – she was you know, nine weeks old – and I started getting notifications on my phone and I was like, ‘Oh, weird, I must have left some somebody, like, a comment on YouTube or something.' And all of a sudden, I look and I'm like, ‘Whoa, my video is popping off.' I was like, ‘What do I do with this?' And so I just, like, doubled down.” – Marco Cammarota This week's guest is a professional opera singer turned voice actor turned YouTuber. He grew up loving video games and video-game music after first discovering them when he was seven years old, and since then he's lived and breathed all things video games. He has a YouTube channel all about video game music – the beauty of modern composition, how it allows us to connect deeper to the games we love, and how we can better learn to understand ourselves through it and the experiences it provides. His name is Marco Cammarota – sometimes known as “Marco Meatball” – and I've been looking forward to hearing about his musical influences and his love of sound, particularly when it comes to video games, for a while now. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did! As always, if you have questions for my guest, you're welcome to reach out through the links in the show notes. If you have questions for me, visit audiobrandingpodcast.com, where you'll find a lot of ways to get in touch. Plus, subscribing to the newsletter will let you know when the new podcasts are available, along with other interesting bits of audio-related news. (0:00:00) - From Opera to YouTubeWe start things off with Marco's early memories of sound, particularly the songs his Italian grandmother used to play when he was a child. “Even the sound of the accordion triggers like a deep sense of nostalgia for me,” he recalls. “When it comes to music like that, that soundscape is really, really poignant to me.” He tells us more about how his childhood led him to opera, voice work, and even YouTube. “The desire to communicate and express,” Marco explains, “was the thing that awakened through this, like summer camp, and then I think that that's what led me down the path of musical theater and eventually opera, and, then voiceover and now this current career.”(0:16:30) - Video Game Music's Healing PowerMarco discusses the impact of his father's passing and the solace he found both in grief counseling and through video game music. “Grief counseling is something everyone should do if possible,” he shares, “just because grief is such a powerful and painful feeling. There are really no words to describe how bad it feels.” He talks about some of the game soundtracks that helped him process those emotions, from Outer Wilds to Disco Elysium, and one particularly timeless classic. “Final Fantasy is really based around classical and prog rock,” he explains, “and sometimes integrating the two in one setting. It's an incredible thing that most of my childhood was based around Final Fantasy's sound, and I think, like, largely that's why I also gravitated towards being sensitive to sound and music.”(0:24:21) - The...

So I thought, what is something that could get people talking and relates to something Martyrus and I love, and that's role-playing games. Throughout the episode, we both talk about certain elements that we simply love to see in an RPG. That means you'll want to grab your weapon of choice because we're all about to embark on a journey into a land far, far away.

Today we're joined Merseyside's very own, Crawlers, an incredible band that you will no doubt have seen playing sold out shows and festivals all across the world and who's music has captured the hearts and minds of a generation. While you might already know that they're signed to Polydor Records and no strangers to sharing stages with bands like My Chemical Romance and Jane's Addiction, it might come as a surprise as to how much Retro Gaming has played an important part in their lives growing up, and how it continues to provide inspiration both on and off the tour bus.I sat down with Holly, Liv, and Harry to talk about all things Zelda, speedrunning classic resident evil games, taking Pokémon Nuzlocking rules to the next level, how video game music influences the writing process, and much more.

RPG title screens bear a heavy burden. They're one of the first things we see in a game, making them one of the best places to leave a strong first impression. And often, a key component of that is the music. Several years ago, we highlighted eight standout title screen tracks in episode 71, and today, with a new panel, we're highlighting eight more! This fast-paced side-scroller had some of my fondest memories with my friends and my brother Tom. Ninja Gaiden wasn't a joke, as many of us who played it knew, but what kept us playing was the soundtrack. All three games could definitely fit into the break beats category, which is the style of music a lot of my DJ friends play. We all have origin stories about how we got into RPGs (several of us shared them almost six years ago in this feature!), so today our panel discusses music origins — what RPGs attuned us to the RPG music scene or otherwise elevated our senses and made us take notice. For some of us, this dates back to the days of the NES, and sometimes our awakening happened during the days of the GameCube. Whenever these songs hail from, they each hold a special place in our hearts.Featuring: Mike Salbato, Wes Iliff, Gio Castillo, Rob White; Edited by Paul DennisWarm Beginnings0:05:01 - Diddle's Organ (Yoko Shimomura) - Legend of Mana0:05:53 - Godot - The Fragrance of Darkness; That is Coffee (Noriyuki Iwadare) - Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Trials & Tribulations16-Bit Vibes0:25:35 - Kids Run Through the City (FFPR ver.)
