Dr. Wade Gilbert is an internationally renowned performance consultant and award-winning professor in the Department of Kinesiology at California State University, Fresno. He is author of the highly acclaimed book Coaching Better Every Season. Gilbert is a long-time advisor to the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee Coach Education Department and primary coach education consultant for USA Football. Specific to hockey, he has served as an advisor to leading hockey organizations and coaching staffs around the world, including USA Hockey, Hockey Canada, IIHF, NHL/NHLPA, WHL, and USHL. Most recently, Gilbert served as the mental performance coach for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics medal-winning Canadian women's softball team. Wade has literally written the book on Coaching Better Every Season - here are some of the key takeaways from the episode: There is no excuses for coaches not to be learning (don't let your insecurities, pride, or ego get in the way) Awaken to the people side of coaching (people first, sport second) The essence of coaching is navigating the moments Best practices versus best principles (personalize the principles to your situation) Each season is a journey and your job is to build a sturdy ship - there will be storms, but with a sturdy ship you will be okay The bottom line is that as a coach you might not be able to fully control winning, but you can control the experience your team has. Safe to say, Wade is an advocate in the fight against the ‘old school' coaching mentality and you too can join us by sharing with your fellow coaches!

Dr. Wade Gilbert is an internationally renowned coaching consultant and sports scientist, as well as an award-winning professor in the Department of Kinesiology at CSU Fresno. Growing up, he lived in a small rural Canadian town and started riding his bikes around with his friends, creating jumps and ramps around town. He started playing multiple types of sports, which would eventually shape his life to come. He ended up going through college studying to be a P.E. teacher. Eventually, he started working at UCLA, then was offered a job at Fresno State, along with his with his wife. They both relocated and started working with the Fresno State Athletics Department. Since then, He's worked with the United States Olympic Committee, National Hockey League, World Wrestling Entertainment, and more. He's worked with some of the most elite athletes and coaches in the world. Wade says that The Canadian Olympic Women's Softball team that he coached was the model of what a team should be, a working cohesive group of people. He uses them as an example of a team effort to accomplish one goal. He works with many different types of sports teams to show their weaknesses and strengths, as an advisor for coaches and athletes looking to improve their strategies. The crux of what Dr. Gilbert tells the teams he consults is this: You don't have to be the best athlete on the field, you just have to be present. And much like with recovery, it works the same way. You just need to be present, in the here and now and be receptive to advice and change. In 2017, he wrote the book “Coaching Better Every Season” where he shares his knowledge on communicating and teaching with athletes, coaches, students, and educators. Gilbert regularly shares his coaching insights through 'Coach Doc' commentaries on the Human Kinetics Coach Education website in his advisory role with the company. He also works closely with youth and Fresno State coaches locally, often testing the merits of new coaching methods and practices. In this Just Go Play podcast episode, Daryl Devonish and Matt Young speak with Eric McLoughlin from the Coaches Association of Ontario on how: Great Coaches can change your life.Eric began his coaching career at the age of 16 after an injury made him realize he wouldn't be able to reach the level of swimming he desired and found his passion for giving back to the sport that had already given him so much. Eric pursued his BA in Psychology and a background in Sport Psychology from Laurentian University that, along with resources he found available, helped him develop as a coach working with athletes from ages four to eighteen at the regional, provincial and national levels. Eric joined the CAO with a wealth of knowledge and experience in coaching, community engagement and events within the sport, non-profit and corporate sectors. He also holds a post-graduate Event Management certificate from the International Festival and Events Society’s (IFEA) Gold Pinnacle award-winning program at Niagara College and works hard to develop events, programs and projects that create lasting positive impressions. In his spare time, he loves to swim, play baseball and connect with people who share a passion for what they love. Eric believes in staying positive, eating smart and dreaming big. With the CAO, Eric supports over 150,000 coaches they support to help build a better system for coaching especially as 75% of coaches in the province are volunteers (that aren’t being paid and do so because they have a kid in it). Hear from Eric on how:You don’t need anything fancy to be a coach. To identify who the clients really are in the system and why it's important to hear what they are asking for.The barriers for entry can be mitigated so that more athletes, parents, and coaches have access to resources, programs, and support.Resources in the industry, such as Wade Gilbert, provide a base foundation of knowledge. Hear their discussion on what we can learn from the Google and Amazon's of the world and why tough decisions need to be made to not forget who we're in this for. At the end of the day, kids just want to have fun.You can learn more about the Coaches Association of Ontario and how they:Provide National Coaches Certification Programs that delivers coach education across a variety of topics. Support each coach through partnerships, mentorship programs, grants, and ongoing professional development of coaches. This weeks episode features coaching scientist, team performance consultant and author Wade Gilbert. Wade is also a professor at California State University - Fresno and a editor for the International Sports Coaching Journal. Wade's book "Coaching Better Every Season" is the main topic of this week's episode but we also explore how he got interested in the science of coaching, why he decided to write the book, what are some important things for every coach to do, and what the ideas from his book look like in action for him. We also explore what makes a quality practice, how to develop a coaching philosophy and how to continuously grow as a coach. Wade's book is a required read here in the Degree Program at Vierumäki and one that we both enjoyed reading and highly recommend to any coach in any sport. It is a great combination of science and experience and has a lot of great knowledge for coaches everywhere. Check it out here: https://coacheducation.humankinetics.com/pages/coaching-better. In this Just Go Play podcast episode, Matt Young speaks with Wade Gilbert on Bridging the gap between Research & Reality with Quality Sport.Dr. Wade Gilbert is an internationally renowned coaching consultant and sport scientist and an award-winning professor in the Department of Kinesiology at California State University – Fresno. Gilbert holds degrees in physical education, human kinetics, and education, and has taught and studied coaching and talent development at the University of Ottawa, University of California – Los Angeles (UCLA), and Fresno State. He is author of the highly acclaimed book Coaching Better Every Season and Editor Emeritus of the International Sport Coaching Journal.Coaching Better Every Season that is applicable for coaches, parents, and anyone who wants to be a better leader and team member. Wade combines his academics with real-life experiences to provide realistic advise on how to make improvements in sport organizations. The biggest challenge he experienced was realizing that organizations who may seem professional may not execute best practices. The downfall of this is having people who may not have the right experience be in certain roles. Decisions in sport organizations are often made based on emotional and financial investments so hear the discussion on how coaches, parents, and all stakeholders can work together to create a better environment including:Be patient: change doesn’t happen overnight. Educate yourself: listen and ask questions to understand why things are done the way they are. Credible Resources: share materials from credible resources to understand what can help impact grassroots sport experiences.Engaged Leadership: be involved and engage everyone in the process. Create a team environment that shares the same values and skills that are being taught to athletes (shared vision, communication, collaboration, etc.) Be inspired by the conversation on how to intentionally build a stronger organization that leads to quality sport experiences for kids. Dr Wade Gilbert is recognized for his contributions to the field include the Dorothy V. Harris Memorial Award from the Association for Applied Sport Psychology, the Kristen Marie Gould Endowed Lecture on Sport for Children and Youth at Michigan State University, and the Cal Botterill Legacy Lecture at the University of Winnipeg. Today's guest is Jukka Varmanen, a professional coach from Heinola, Finland. Jukka started his journey as a coach in 2000 with the junior organization of Heinolan Kiekko as an U18 coach. After two seasons in Heinola he joined the junior organization of HIFK in Helsinki. After spending five years with HIFK he worked two years with Lahden Kiekko-Reipas which is now the Lahti Peilcans. In 2009 he gained his first experience on the professional level as an assistant coach with Jokipojat. For the 2010-11 season he became the head coach of the team. In our conversation Jukka describes his time as a head coach in Joensuu as a one of the most challenging barriers he had to overcome on his coaching path so far. Reflecting back the lessons he has learned there were very valuable to him. The experience he has gained there is until today his favorite failure. Afterwards he moved on and became the U20 head coach for Vierumäki United for two seasons. In 2013 he went back to the professional level and worked for three seasons as an assistant coach for his hometown team Peliitat. From 2011 till 2016 he also worked for the IIHCE in Vierumäki. During the 2016-17 season he gained his first experience in a different culture with the Chinese KHL team Kunlun Stars. After spending one season in the KHL he went back to Finland and joined the Lahti Pelicans in January 2018 as an assistant coach. After he had worked with the Pelicans he returned to the IIHCE for one year. During the 2019-20 season he worked in the NLA for SC Bern where he gained his second experience in a different culture. This season he will work again as an assistant coach in Liiga for JYP Jyväskylä. Furthermore, Jukka gained experience with the Finnish U18, U20 and Men's National Team. In 2019 he won gold medals with both the Finnish U20 and Men's National teams at the IIHF world championships. With Jukka we discussed his educational background in Vierumäki and how the studies have impacted his coaching. As he has gained a lot of experience as an assistant coach, we also talked with him what his role is in establishing a culture, identity and environment in a team. Additionally, we explore with him about the experience he has gained in different cultures. Finally, we spoke with Jukka about the time he spent working with the Finnish National Team program and what he has been taking away from it so far. As always, we ask Jukka for some recommendations of resources he found useful and interesting: "Sacred Hoops" and "The Last Season" by Phil Jackson, and "The Culture Code" by Daniel Coyle. Jukka also recommends several podcasts including "Training Ground Guru", "The Way of Champions" and "Coach Your Brains Out." Finally he recommends checking out Wade Gilbert's webinars.
