In this special edition of The Traveling Therapist Podcast, Kym Tolson candidly shares the struggles of traveling while living with Celiac disease, a chronic condition that affects how she navigates food and health on the road. She is joined by fellow therapists Erin Davis and Christina Kantzavelos, who also live with Celiac disease, and together they open up about the challenges they face as they balance their nomadic lifestyles with managing a restrictive diet. Each of them shares their personal stories of late diagnoses and the hardships they endured before realizing gluten was the culprit behind years of discomfort and illness. Throughout the episode, they discuss the emotional toll that living with Celiac disease brings, from the anxiety of dining out to the frustration of navigating social situations where food is involved. The conversation sheds light on the daily obstacles of avoiding cross-contamination and how the condition impacts their mental health. Despite the challenges, they also share practical tips for fellow travelers with Celiac, offering both hope and understanding for anyone facing similar struggles on the road. Key points from this episode: Healing the gut is crucial for improving mental health in chronic illness, as gut issues can significantly impact brain function. Gluten exposure often triggers intense anxiety and PTSD-like symptoms, making it difficult to trust food in social or restaurant settings. Celiac disease causes grief over lost food experiences and social challenges, as managing cross-contamination becomes a constant struggle. Chaudhary also has extensive media experience including being a regular medical contributor for “The Dr. Oz Show.”LEARN MORE: https://drkulreetchaudhary.com/ADDITIONAL INFO (some in interview, some not) The Ayurvedic diet is tailored toward your dosha type, and some of the recommendations can shift with the season or as you age because your dosha can change during these times. Your dosha type will either be a vata, pitta, kapha or a combination of these and the beauty of an Ayurvedic diet is that it doesn't have to be done all at once.Helpful tips based on your dosha type to improve digestion: Vatas should take a stroll after eating: A brief, relaxing 5–15-minute walk will ground you and help to pull vata dosha types downward to support healthy digestion. Pittas go green: Pitta dosha types tend to favor certain fruits and vegetables over others and should minimize the consumption of sour and salty foods, acidic foods and beverages and meats. Kaphas spice it up: Kapha dosha types should consume spicy and bitter tastes, room temperature or hot beverages, honey and ghee in moderation and warm, cooked foods.Practice intermittent fasting: your gut needs a break to stay efficient, and your body detoxes and repairs overnight. Fasting during sundown honors your circadian rhythms. This automatically generates more energy and greater mental clarity, allowing you to jump out of bed feeling fresh and vibrant each morningThe Power of Mantra: There is an Ayurvedic proverb, “What you eat becomes your mind.” What this means is that your food influences everything about your mind—the way you think as well as your clarity, mood and memory. The foods we drink and the beverages we consume become a part of who we are and the impact that has on not only our brain, but our gut microbiome shapes the health of every organ in our body.
#Ep.046 Nepal's current state of infrastructure financing plays a critical role in shaping the country's development and prosperity. Adequate infrastructure is crucial for Nepal's economic growth, job creation, and overall socio-economic advancement. However, Nepal faces various challenges in securing sustainable infrastructure financing for long-term development. Limited fiscal resources, difficulty accessing affordable financing, bureaucratic hurdles, and governance issues hinder the financing process. Furthermore, political instability, weak institutional frameworks, and corruption pose additional obstacles to attracting essential foreign investment. Addressing these challenges requires comprehensive efforts to streamline bureaucratic processes, enhance governance practices, establish specialized financing mechanisms, and create a favorable investment climate. In today's episode of PODS by PEI, we have PEI colleague Saurab Lama's conversation with Radhesh Pant. Building on Radhesh's past experiences at the helm of the Investment Board of Nepal, Saurab and Radhesh explore the intricacies of project planning, financing, and implementation of various Nepali projects, and discuss the core challenges Nepal faces to ensure sustainable and effective infrastructural development. They further discuss the way forward for Nepal to improve its institutional organization, resource mobilization, and governance in the midst of the climate debate and the ongoing geopolitical contestations within the South Asia region. Radhesh is the Senior Managing Partner at VRock and Company and also serves as chairman in various boards for Asia Network for Sustainable Agriculture and Bio resources (ANSAB), Smile Nepal, and is a founding director for South Asia Institute of Management (SAIM). He also served as the Chief Executive of the Investment Board Nepal (IBN). He holds an MBA from University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and a Bachelor of Technology in Aeronautical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), India. I love Dr. Denise's focus on restoring quality of life and normalizing that there's no normal in sexual function and desires for men. Instead of a disease-centered approach that puts a diagnosis in the spotlight, focusing on getting back to enjoying life with a personal approach. Dr. Denise Asafu-Adjei is a urologist with subspecialty training in sexual dysfunction and male infertility. She completed a Fellowship in Andrology at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). She will be joining the Urology Department at Loyola University in Chicago as the Medical Director of Male Reproductive Medicine. We cover topics like: The reason why men don't seek out healthcare as often as women do Penis-performance and other cultural expectations Ultrasound and traction device therapy for Peyronie's disease When you have a concern, the first step is finding a provider you trust to get reliable and accurate answers to your questions. Men tend to be less proactive in scheduling routine appointments with physicians and face social and cultural messages that can be constraining, misleading, and create fear around going to the doctor for sexual health concerns. Because it's not openly discussed, concerns and underlying causes may go untreated for years. In my practice I see a gap in access to care, trust in the medical community, and not knowing when and who to schedule an appointment with when sexual health concerns arise. In Dr. Denise's practice, she has seen patients struggling to talk about their sexual health and that many physicians aren't comfortable talking about sex. Christina opens up about her journey back into clinical practice after being couch-bound. Christina, thank you for your vulnerability and transparency! I enjoyed the realness of this conversation, as well as our discussion about how chronic illness can absolutely rock you identity and your relationship with yourself. Christina Kantzavelos is a neurodivergent and first-generation (third culture) Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), life coach, writer, and chronic illness warrior. She received both her BA and MSW from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and her MLIS from San Jose State University (SJSU). Her experience includes 14 years of clinical experience in a range of settings, including both outpatient and inpatient psychiatric services, acute inpatient hospital services, insurance case management, home health, hospice, distaster mental health (humanitarian work), and private therapy and coaching. She specializes in treating clients with chronic health conditions (aka spoonies and medical refugees) and trauma (including medical trauma). Chronic medical conditions (i.e. diabetes, dysautonomia, EDS, Lyme disease, bartonella, Hashimoto's, mast cell activation syndrome, vasculitis, back and neck pain, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, vertigo, IBS, IBD, sickle cell disease, mold illness, etc.) often come with significant challenges, like fear, anxiety, medical PTSD, and may interfere with relationships and daily function. It is her experience and believe that chronic illnesses are often rooted in trauma(s) that cause a chronic stress/ fight-or-flight response, not allowing the body to prioritize healing. She utilizes various holistic evidence-based treatment modalities and practice-based evidence such as EMDR to get to the root, with an added focus on mindfulness techniques, positive psychology, neural retraining and strengths-based therapy. In addition, she provides life coaching, case management, and elder and disability care planning and support. She is also a writer, and an award-wonning gluten-free and health-conscious travel and lifestyle blogger, @buenqamino.
