Interview by Kris PetersIt's been almost ten years since Finnish melodic death masters Insomnium last graced Australian shores, but that means nothing now with the band is set to bring their signature blend of haunting melodies and crushing riffs to fans Down Under this May.Founded in 1997 in the Karelian city of Joensuu, Insomnium first gained recognition in 2002 with their wintry debut In the Halls of Awakening. Quickly building on this with fierce death/doom juggernaut Above the Weeping World (2006) or melancholic masterpiece One for Sorrow (2012), the band surprised everyone with their sublimely beautiful, achingly forlorn Argent Moon EP in 2021, only to shed their skin once more with Anno 296 in 2023, proving emphatically that Father time has no grip on pure metal.HEAVY recently spent some time with bass player/unclean vocalist Niilo Sevanen to get the rundown on what we can expect. We start by asking what has changed with Insomnium in the eight years since we last saw them."Well, our guitarists keep changing," he laughed. "Jani Liimatainen left the band last year, or the previous year actually, and now we have a touring member guitarist, Tomy Laisto, touring with us, and he's an excellent friend of ours. Excellent player, very good singer, super nice guy. And he's kind of a permanent live member at the moment. Let's see what happens with our guitarist situation in the future. But at least at the moment, we're touring with Tommy and Australian's are going to get to witness his vocals and his playing. I can promise he's an excellent guy."For the benefit of those who may not have witnessed Insomnium live before, we ask Sevanen to run us through a typical performance."On the albums we are very serious and sad and melancholic and dramatic," he began, "but I think the live show is more about having fun. So we are having a good time there. We hope people are enjoying too. It's a lot of headbanging and good times, and we try to deliver a very energetic show every time, no matter how jet-lagged or tired we would happen to be. But once you go on stage, you forget everything, and you get your energy up and for that hour or hour and a half, you'll be on and after that, it's time to rest again. But for the shows, we give everything we've got."In the full interview, Niilo provided more details about their current tour, expressing confidence in the live performance of the new material, noting positive crowd reactions and describing the shows as energetic and fun. Additionally, he mentioned their collaboration with fellow Finnish band Omnium Gatherum, enhancing the concert experience for fans.Reflecting on the band's origins, Niilo recounted how he and Markus started Insomnium in 1997 in Joensuu, Finland, inspired by melodic death metal bands. He highlighted the vibrant 90s music scene in Joensuu, and the challenges faced by aspiring musicians today. Niilo explained the band's evolution from imitating their influences to developing a unique sound that blends progressive metal, black metal, folk metal, and doom metal. He emphasized the organic nature of their creative process, where all members contribute to songwriting and arrangements, ensuring the music aligns with their identity, and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

I was lucky enough to meet Atso Almila in person recently and knew he would be the perfect guest to interview - a warm and charming man who speaks frankly and honestly with a touch of humour! I heard about how he and Esa Pekka Salonen passed their final exam at the Sibelius Academy in bizarre circumstances, he was very frank about how his time conducting in Joensuu came to an end, and at one point, he scares his 15-year-old dog! Nostalgiapalojen jaksossa 37 rokataan eli nostalgisoidaan Rocksalibandyn SM-kisojen syntyä ja historiaa. Rocksalibandya on pelattu jo 20 vuotta, vuodesta 2003 lähtien. A., Meunier, F. A. Abstract: Following exocytosis, the recapture of plasma membrane-stranded vesicular proteins into recycling synaptic vesicles (SVs) is essential for sustaining neurotransmission. Surface clustering of vesicular proteins has been postulated as a 'pre-assembly' mechanism for endocytosis - ensuring high-fidelity retrieval. Here, we used single-molecule imaging to examine the nanoclustering of synaptotagmin-1 (Syt1) and synaptic vesicle protein 2A (SV2A) in hippocampal neurons. Syt1 forms surface nanoclusters through interaction of its C2B domain with SV2A, that are sensitive to mutations in this domain (Syt1K326A/K328A) and knocking down SV2A. SV2A co-cluster with Syt1 and blocking SV2A's cognate interaction with Syt1 (SV2AT84A) also decreased SV2A clustering. Surprisingly, impairing SV2A-Syt1 nanoclustering enhanced plasma membrane recruitment of key endocytic protein dynamin-1, leading to accelerated Syt1 endocytosis, altered intracellular sorting and decreased trafficking of Syt1 to Rab5-positive endocytic compartments. SV2A-Syt1 surface nanoclusters therefore negatively regulate the rate of their own re-entry into recycling SVs by controlling the recruitment of the endocytic machinery. Tuomo on vallan mainio tarinankertoja, kannattaa kuunnella haastis jo senkin takia!

1990-luvun alussa Suomessa oli kaksi virkeän musaskenen kaupunkia, joita tituleerattiin Suomen Seattleiksi. Toinen niistä oli Joensuu. Viime viikolla aloitettu Tulenkantajat-teema täydentyy, kun yhtyeestä juttuseuraksemme Rolloa lanseeraamassa ollut ja omalta osaltaan suomiräpille suuntaa antanut Hannibal istahti juttuseuraksi PopuLappi-podcastiin. Sittemmin 2000-luvulla muun muassa Hot Heroesia ja Joku Roti Mafiaa keulakuvana luotsanneen, ajattomaan yhteiskuntakritiikkiin pyrkivän sanataiturin tarinat polveilivat korona-ajan herättämästä toiveikkuudesta räppärin writer’s blockeihin ja edelleen muuatteen rovaniemeläisen musiikkikirjaston kyseenalaiseen mutta ihanan itsetietoiseen asiakaspalvelutapahtumaan 90-luvulla. Se on rentoa mutta täsmällistä tai täsmällistä mutta rentoa; “Rap is the art of talking shit”, siteeraa Hannibal ja jatkaa rönsyilyä. Lappilaislähtöistä tarinaniskentää luvassa siis, olkaapa hyvät!

“One of the last warm and sunny summer days by the lake Pyhäselkä in Joensuu, Finland. Small waves gently crashing on the rocks.”
Today's guest is Jukka Varmanen, a professional coach from Heinola, Finland. Jukka started his journey as a coach in 2000 with the junior organization of Heinolan Kiekko as an U18 coach. After two seasons in Heinola he joined the junior organization of HIFK in Helsinki. After spending five years with HIFK he worked two years with Lahden Kiekko-Reipas which is now the Lahti Peilcans. In 2009 he gained his first experience on the professional level as an assistant coach with Jokipojat. For the 2010-11 season he became the head coach of the team. In our conversation Jukka describes his time as a head coach in Joensuu as a one of the most challenging barriers he had to overcome on his coaching path so far. Reflecting back the lessons he has learned there were very valuable to him. The experience he has gained there is until today his favorite failure. Afterwards he moved on and became the U20 head coach for Vierumäki United for two seasons. In 2013 he went back to the professional level and worked for three seasons as an assistant coach for his hometown team Peliitat. From 2011 till 2016 he also worked for the IIHCE in Vierumäki. During the 2016-17 season he gained his first experience in a different culture with the Chinese KHL team Kunlun Stars. After spending one season in the KHL he went back to Finland and joined the Lahti Pelicans in January 2018 as an assistant coach. After he had worked with the Pelicans he returned to the IIHCE for one year. During the 2019-20 season he worked in the NLA for SC Bern where he gained his second experience in a different culture. This season he will work again as an assistant coach in Liiga for JYP Jyväskylä. Furthermore, Jukka gained experience with the Finnish U18, U20 and Men's National Team. In 2019 he won gold medals with both the Finnish U20 and Men's National teams at the IIHF world championships. With Jukka we discussed his educational background in Vierumäki and how the studies have impacted his coaching. As he has gained a lot of experience as an assistant coach, we also talked with him what his role is in establishing a culture, identity and environment in a team. Additionally, we explore with him about the experience he has gained in different cultures. Finally, we spoke with Jukka about the time he spent working with the Finnish National Team program and what he has been taking away from it so far. As always, we ask Jukka for some recommendations of resources he found useful and interesting: "Sacred Hoops" and "The Last Season" by Phil Jackson, and "The Culture Code" by Daniel Coyle. Jukka also recommends several podcasts including "Training Ground Guru", "The Way of Champions" and "Coach Your Brains Out." Finally he recommends checking out Wade Gilbert's webinars. Joensuu 1685 - "Light in the Heart of Our Town" from the 2020 album ÖB on Gems Records. Formed in 2007 in Helsinki, Finland, Joensuu 1685 — a project of brothers Markus and Mikko Joensuu and non-related bassist Risto Joensuu — have been dormant for over a decade, but a 2018 reunion performance at the Flow Festival ignited the spark for them to complete an unfinished album. Today's featured track was inspired by "an image of a dying town," Mikko explained. “About a person in front of a gas station right at the edge of town, seeing the town and seeing oneself, what was, what is and what will be. It’s an image of the hope that runs deep in our bones…” The long-awaited sophomore release, titled ÖB, will be released October 9th via Gems Records. Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show.
What can cold cities, where people nonetheless bike year-round through snow and seemingly endless hours of darkness, tell us about what it takes to make better streets? In this episode, Sarah reports back from her trip to Finland and the the 8th annual Winter Cycling Conference, held in Joensuu and Helsinki in early February. How does active transportation figure into Helsinki's goal to become the world “most functional city”? What's the right way to prioritize transportation modes?

Arto avaa elämänfilosofiaansa, jonka keskiössä on hänen veljeltään oppimansa ajatus: ”doing good things with good people”.

One Life Left returns after a two week break and everything has changed. Or at least one thing has: the caretaker is on holiday, which means Ste is back to uploading the podcast which means it's frankly some kind of miracle that you're even reading this. If there's a second miracle and you can hear it too, here's what to expect: * Super special guest Rachael Reynolds talks Sunless Sea, Fallen London, drops some exclusive news involving another dev studio and teaches us how to do interviews * The team discuss their various engagements, including Simon's fun at Develop, Ste's adventures in Joensuu and Ann's trip to Kelis * There's some promotion for the not-at-all-confusing third #THIRDSDAY, this time on a Wednesday, i.e. potentially tonight, so see you at The Loading Bar * Reviews, news, features, letters, etc. And lots of music, talking of which... Track List: 1. Iron Ore - Sentiment 2. Klamm - Score 3. Calavera - About Us 4. Motionride - Whatever You Wish
