Episode 14 of the podcast takes us once again to Nagano Prefecture and Son of the Smith Hard Cider brewery. Opened in 2020, Son of the Smith Hard Cider are in many ways forging a new era for cider in Japan – a country that doesn't have a strong cider tradition. In this episode, I speak with head brewer Ikeuchi Takuro about the brewery's founding vision and the cider they are now producing – work that is redefining what is possible when it comes to cider. As Ikeuchi-san explains, his background in organic chemistry underpins brewing techniques that respond to the variation in apples from season-to-season. Such methods allow Son of the Smith to utilise apple varieties typically considered unsuitable for good cider while also adapting methods used in the United Kingdom, United States – including production of hop cider - and Europe to pioneer a new Japanese tradition.Make sure to check out the episode page on the Snow Country Stories Japan website for further information, relevant links and a map showing where the brewery is located. Given the size of Japan's snow country and often unfamiliar place names, understanding where each episode is talking about can be confusing. For that reason, each episode has a page on website including links and maps to help you get your bearings and learn more about the people and places discussed. This is week 5 in our 6 week series, “WE” as we try to better describe the church from a biblical perspective. So far we had the opportunity to talk about “We Are One Body,” “We Are Many Members.” “We Gather with Purpose,” and this beautiful reality that “We Eat to Remember.” This time we grab hold of maybe one of the most tangible realities, that is “We Are Commanded to Go.” We are, not they, not those, but we are.
We continue our series “We” with a focus on the why and not the how of the communion. We are not going to eat together tonight because it is important that we learn more, that we listen more, that grab hold of more before we start trying to do. This is not a technical teaching on the passover or the Lord’s Supper. We are not going to get into the depth of them being the same meal, not one replacing the other or what Jesus even meant when he said through Paul, “As often as you drink it.” So be patient. We are going to get to those things, but we are just not going to get to them tonight. The question is why do we eat and drink. Why do we do this thing that has become a habit and an ordinance. Our guest speaker Butch Ireland and pastor Abie Kulynych answer this main question in this sermon, “We Eat in Remembrance.”

“The disconnect between the research and what the public believes and understands is mind boggling.”Dr. Cyrus Khambatta & Robby BarbaroA full blown epidemic in the developed world, diabetes currently afflicts an astonishing 30 million people in the US alone, despite the fact that 1 out of 4 don’t even know they have it.Even more bewildering, over one-third of all U.S. adults have prediabetes. That's more than 84 million people, 90% of whom are unaware of their condition. Not enough? Over the last 20 years, the number of adults diagnosed has more than doubled, with no end in sight. For purposes of clarity, 90-95% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes are the Type 2 form. The good news is that Type 2 isn’t just treatable, it’s actually reversible -- often to the point of undetectability. And for those suffering from Type 1, certain diet and lifestyle changes render the illness more manageable than ever.To learn more about the nature of diabetes, how to avoid it and the many things you can do if you have it, I sat down with Cyrus Khambatta, PhD and Robby Barbaro MPH -- the team behind Mastering Diabetes, an online coaching platform for people living with all forms of diabetes that focuses on low-fat, plant-based, whole-food nutrition. Living with Type 1 diabetes since 2002, Cyrus received a degree in mechanical engineering from Stanford University and a PhD in nutritional biochemistry from UC Berkeley. In addition, he has co-authored many peer-reviewed scientific publications. Robbie has a master's degree in public health from American Public University, spent six years helping build Forks Over Knives, and has been living with type 1 diabetes since 2000. Experts in the science of insulin resistance, together they have successfully helped thousands prevent, navigate and reverse diabetes not by way of medication, but rather through simple changes in diet and lifestyle -- all principles beautifully chronicled in their new book, aptly titled Mastering Diabetes -- hitting bookstores February 18.Current medical dogma urges a very low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet for anyone suffering from diabetes or prediabetes. But is this actually true?Today Cyrus & Robby put this paradigm to the test. While it is true that a low carb approach may improve short-term blood glucose control, such a diet also increases the long-term risk for an array of chronic diseases.Although it may sound counter-intuitive, perhaps even radical, the hard science is ironically quite clear: eating a high carbohydrate, low fat, plant-based whole-food diet rich in fruit (yes, fruit) and vegetables is actually the most powerful way to reverse insulin resistance in all types of diabetes -- while also simultaneously preventing a litany of chronic disorders typically linked to today's popular low-carb approach.Whether or not you have diabetes, chances are you care for someone who does. For those who fall into this category, I truly believe that this conversation is potentially life-saving.The visually inclined can watch it all go down on YouTube. And as always, the audio version streams wild and free on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.I appreciate the work these two young men are doing to positively impact a disease that unnecessarily debilitates millions. It's an honor to share their message. And . I sincerely hope you take it to heart.Peace + Plants,Listen, Watch & Subscribe Apple Podcasts | YouTube | Spotify | Stitcher | Google PodcastsThanks to this week’s sponsorsHealthIQ: Health IQ uses science & data to secure lower rates on life insurance for people committed to living well – people like you and me. Dr. Vee Helene talks with Mitzi Ruddock, a Michigan marijuana advocate and founder of Buds, Corks, Forks (BCF), Black Cannabis Access & Advancement Alliance (BCA3), and yeWE (ya’ll eat WE EAT). This is the audio for GoB-TV episode: Barrel Aged Nonsense. Full video available at WGoB Network on Youtube. Guerrillas of Booze TV returns with a very special episode guest starring Ed from WE Eat. Chris couldn't be with us so we decided to punish Ed with an episode full of Barrel-Aged beers. Fair warning...the wheels come off the bus on this one almost right away and the profanity is turned up to a 10. The beers for this show include: Innis & Gunn Bourbon Barrel Scotch Ale, Shipyard Bourbon Barrel-Aged Smashed Blueberry, Founders Curmudgeon's Better Half, Paradox Zangria Bianca, And for our Bad Beer of the Night: Heavy Gem Virga. This was a train wreck for sure, but it's always a blast recording with Ed.
It's the stuff from nightmares. We Eat $5 Caviar, Tamarind, Wild Herring in Sour Cream, Gefilte fish, Peach Palm Fruit, Smoked Turkey Tail and oh so much more.

You will note that the name we say we SHOULD call the episode is not what we actually call it. I blame the beer. And it is GOOD beer - I ran into the actual owner of the brewery the day after we recorded it at the Co-Op, and gushed about how awesome it was. Otherwise, this week is a mixed bag. We have some outstanding foods, and some things that probably should be shot out of a cannon into the sun. But that is how it goes when We Eat it, So You Don't Have To!
Kevin is back from WA, and he brought goodies! One of his coworkers took him to an Indian Market, and helped find foods that Americans wouldn''t normally eat. So we've got something new to try. We also have a pile of chips from Home Goods, beer, wine, and frozen foods best left in the store. Oh, and some good stuff too. Find out what it is, when We Eat it, So You Don't Have To!
