The United States is an empire, even if its citizens don't all realize it. That is the conclusion from historian and political scientist Aaron Good, who joins Alan MacLeod on this week's edition of “MintCast.” Today, Good walks us through the history of how the United States came to dominate the world and the organizations it uses – especially the CIA and NATO – in order to enforce its control over the planet. He notes that as Europe and Asia were destroying themselves in conflict, the U.S. gave the powerful business think tank, the Council on Foreign Relations, the task of planning America's entry into World War II.Enter the war, win it, and establish dominion over global capitalism. They are going to essentially take control of Western imperialism. It's not stated that way, but that's what ends up being the consensus of people at the top of the U.S. And that consensus of the U.S. as the global hegemon of capitalism worldwide is the story of our time.”In this, the U.S. has been very effective dominating the planet for the past 75 years, although Good does later note that China's growing role is loosening the American grip on the world.  Good describes the U.S. as a “paper tiger,” explaining that:In a sense, the U.S. is musclebound to the military, meaning that we may have all these bases and all these billions. But there are two things that the U.S. does not have the ability to do. One is actually using its nuclear arsenal because it would kill everybody. It is a non-starter.”“The other…is fielding a military. When they talk about the U.S. potentially entering a war in Ukraine. Good luck with that!... Who in the world is going to fight in some World War One-style battle?! In Iraq, the U.S. lost fewer than 10,000, and that was very unpopular. By some estimates, 400,000 have died in Ukraine. How could you possibly expect Americans or Europeans to want to die in that way?”Today, Good and MacLeod also chat about the power and purpose of the CIA, how the United States laid the groundwork for Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and the use and misuse of the term “the deep state.”Aaron Good is a historian and former political organizer. His book, “American Exception: Empire and the Deep State,” was published in 2022. Moonaya is an extremely talented MC in one of the strongest hip hop scenes in the world. A Pan Africanist, her background represents her political views. Moonaya is originally from Benin, but she grew up in Senegal. While her father is Senegalese, her mother is Togolese, and one of her grandmothers was Nigerian. She grew up in a musical home where she heard a range of African music, as well as music from across the Diaspora. While she went to school to study law, she’s been writing hip hop music for almost 20 years. Her debut album, A Fleur 2 Mo was released in 2009. Her more recent project, the EP Petit Oiseau, was released in 2019. In 2017, she became the 1st Senegalese artist to sign with Sony. Over the years, her music has dealt with a range of topics. In “J’déprim” (I’m Depressed) she discusses the impacts of depression, in "Il est temps” (It’s Time) she talks about Pan Africanism and Black liberation, and in the song “Qui” (Who?) she samples Malcolm X’s speech and talks about self hatred and Black peoples. Moonaya also spoke a lot about European, American, and even Chinese imperialism in Africa. She spoke about the exploitation of Africa’s resources, European hands in African conflicts, and the continued colonial relationship between France and francophone Africa. She also spoke about the struggles being faced by Black people all over the world. "We are the richest continent, but we are the poorest people, and this is not normal!" Moonaya In this interview we also discussed the hip hop scene in Senegal. Senegal has a few women’s hip hop collectives, which have served as a resource for artists willing to work to build their careers. Moonaya talked about her experiences with these collectives as well as how helpful they have been to other artists. We also discussed the influences on her work, especially the growth of her own social and political consciousness. We also discussed the role of Western researchers in Senegal. Senegal has one of the most researched hip hop scenes, outside of the United States. Most of these researchers are White, and come from Europe and the US. A lot of the research that is produced on Senegalese hip hop is problematic. There are some American researchers, like Catherine Appert and Colleen Neff, who have done extensive work on hip-hop in Senegal, and have also pointed out the problematic ways that other Western researchers have written about hip hop in Senegal. Often because of language, Black scholars often choose to go to anglophone countries, and few do work in Senegal. Moonaya and I talked about the fact that more Black scholars need to go to Senegal, and we discussed some of the ways to overcome the language barriers: Hire a translator! While there is tons of scholarship on Senegalese hip hop, there is a need for scholarship on hip hop’s Pan African connections in Senegal. On how through hip hop culture, the Senegalese are in conversation with the African Diaspora. My Presentation at 1st International online conference on Fourth Political Theory: Global Perspectives, New Challenges, Epistemological Problems 1 August 2020In my view, the Fourth Political Theory is an elegant articulation of a universal truth. When I first came across this Theory, I was amazed at how it fit perfectly with the work that a small group of us have been doing in the Caribbean for decades.I come from a local intellectual tradition called the New World Group, which was formed from the time we were becoming independent in the 1960s, and some of us resisted the Cold War between American liberal capitalism and Soviet Communism.I want to share our insights so that we can collaborate.Let's start with the Caribbean's place in MOdernity. The Caribbean was the birthplace of Western Imperialism and the Modern World, even before many places in Europe.  This is where Columbus came and his voyages were.Whole societies were created out of pure economic interests, vulgar and brutal materialism. We were foundational to the internationalisation of production, finance, distribution and trade chains and extreme inequality. All our production was exported, all of our necessities were imported, we produced nothing for our own use. We created vast proto-industrial plantations based on imported cheap (slave) labour. The predated industrialial capitalism in Europe. We represent the dark side of modernity. We have also been engaged in a long struggle against it.Both in the form of trying to create autonomous societies that try to free themselves of imperialism, and also in the form of providing some of the most cogent critiques of that imperialism, including the hypocrisy of its chief ideology, Liberalism. My presentation provides four main insights. The full conference can be found here: http://paideuma.tv/en/announce/1st-international-online-conference-fourth-political-theoryhttp://4pt.su/en

This is a segment of episode #223 of Last Born In The Wilderness “Mapping The Roots: A History Of Displacement w/ Mirna Wabi-Sabi.” Listen to the full episode: http://bit.ly/LBWwabisabi2 Read Mirna’s article The History of Displacement of Non-White Women in Villa Mimosa’: http://bit.ly/2Rb2gqs In this segment of my discussion with political theorist, writer, and editor at Gods & Radicals Mirna Wabi-Sabi, we examine the themes presented in Mirna’s article ‘The History of Displacement of Non-White Women in Villa Mimosa: Mapping the roots of Brazil’s most notorious red light district from the Byzantine Empire and WW1,’ which addresses the long and complex history of slavery and sex work in Europe and how this is tied to the varied forms of displacement of marginalized populations up the present moment. This examination also includes the work of historian Clare Makepeace and her research into WWI, heterosexuality, and the role sex work played in the expression of male heteronormativity up to the present moment. Mirna examines how this dynamic is felt today in the displacement of women, with a particular focus on Rio’s red light district Villa Mimosa: “A high speed train that will connect Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo is expected to pass through Vila Mimosa, and will displace these women once again. Countries like Germany, France, Spain and Italy have economic interests here and are investing in this project. There are plans to build a new place for the women to work called ‘City of Girls', but the budget still floats in the distance, far away from any European investors' field of vision. Western Europe's economic interests have marginalized other people for hundreds of years. Vila Mimosa is a microcosmic example of the global structure that has been, and still is, displacing and weakening the existence of non-white women. These economic interests certainly don’t benefit all people. Whom are they benefiting? Western Europe is small and vulnerable. As we can see in the map from before, it occupies half of the European continent, which is already the second smallest continent in the world, and has very few natural resources. Even so, it’s a force capable of evolving its methods of enslavement, and of sustaining a society where women like the workers of Vila Mimosa have no choice but to expose themselves to brutal situations to survive.” Mirna Wabi-Sabi is a writer, political theorist, teacher and translator. She is an editor at Gods&Radicals, founder of the Enemy of the Queen magazine and of the Plataforma 9 media collective. [Intro: 9:08] In this episode, I speak with political theorist, writer, and editor at Gods & Radicals Mirna Wabi-Sabi. Mirna and I begin this discussion by laying out the nature of our upcoming collaborative work together, as I’ll be traveling to southern Brazil for two months, beginning December 8th. In explaining how our work overlaps in crucial ways, we remark on the absurdity of contemporary politics in both in Brazil and the United States, and how the often narrow focus of climate justice activism in the Global North often limits our approach to addressing the roots of the ecological crisis more specifically, and the legacy of colonialism more generally. From there, we moving into an examination of the themes presented in Mirna’s article ‘The History of Displacement of Non-White Women in Villa Mimosa: Mapping the roots of Brazil’s most notorious red light district from the Byzantine Empire and WW1,’ which addresses the long and complex history of slavery and sex work in Europe and how this is tied to the varied forms of displacement of marginalized populations up the present moment. Even so, it’s a force capable of evolving its methods of enslavement, and of sustaining a society where women like the workers of Vila Mimosa have no choice but to expose themselves to brutal situations to survive.” (http://bit.ly/2Rb2gqs) Mirna Wabi-Sabi is a writer, political theorist, teacher and translator. She is an editor at Gods&Radicals, founder of the Enemy of the Queen magazine and of the Plataforma 9 media collective. Her work orbits around Capitalism, White Supremacy and Patriarchy, and resistance to Eurocentrism and Western Imperialism. This week, I am the guest as I am interviewed by Williams Pounds and Chad Wilson of the Green Party in the US.The topic is about moving past the divisions of "right" and "left" as we fight against perpetual war, neoliberal corporatism, and underdevelopment. It was a great discussion. We cover the following topics:- How we've got to throw away the labels because that is part of the divide and rule strategy- how "right" and "left" are all just different wings of the War Party which continue the Imperial Policy of Divide and Rule- How Trump's pullout of Syria policy reveals the underlying unity of the official "right" and "left"- the Venezuelan refugee crisis in small Trinidad- entrenchment of the US two-party system- how the internet has turned from a libertarian site of free information to a site of Orwellian surveillance and mind control- how the military-Govt-industrial-academia complex has tried to deny the recognition of Dr. Shiva Ayyadurai as the inventor of email- the appeal of Trump to the working class and debating his genuineness- What the Corporate Imperialists (East India Company) did in Asia in the 18th and 19th century -- which was the richest place on earth -- they are doing to America and Europe in the 21st century.- Western Imperialism started out as a Private Enterprise by the world's first Corporation, The East India Company. Even the American Revolution began against the East India Company with the Boston Tea Party.- We can't be afraid of embracing a Trump, a Putin, a Duterte, or someone labelled a "facist", "communist", "anarchist", "white nationalist", "racist" or whatever, that's the trick they use to hold on to their control. These are words meant to scare you- the internal politics of the Green Party and the struggle against even internal corruption- How the vast majority of Anti-Colonialists in the Third World are Nationalists, and the need fo alliances with Third World nationalist intellectuals- George Orwell's "Lion and the Unicorn": patriotism vs. ideology- How Ideology is used as a "trick" to divide solidarity, e.g. the Jacobites in England (based on loyalty) vs. the Jacobins in France (based on for an abstract idea. I think fighting for people is probably, in the end, more human and often better- Nationalism as the most important bulwark against global corporatism- How the fact When your movement is endorsed by Starbucks, Walmart, Coca Cola, the Chambers of Commerce, etc. you are not part of a Resistance

UN Approves Legal Inquiry into Burkina Faso Presidential Assassination (3:35) This month marks the twentieth anniversary of the death of Thomas Sankara, the revolutionary and former President of Burkina Faso who was assassinated in 1987. Sankara was known as the Che of Africa. He gave Burkina Faso its name – changing it from Upper Volta – and personally wrote the country's national anthem. He was popular for not living extravagantly; he traded in the government's fleet of Mercedes for Renaults and rode his bike to work. He also stood up to Western Imperialism, countering the World Bank and IMF. Circumstances surrounding Sankara's death remain a mystery, however recently the UN Human Rights Commission ruled in favor of an international legal inquiry into the assassination, as presented by an internal legal team coordinated in Canada. FSRN's Stefan Christoff reports from Montreal. /// listen to reports produced for Free Speech Radio News between 2002 - 2012, the flagship Pacifica radio daily news program, these reports were produced in Montreal, but also in Beirut, Lebanon. putting these reports up for archiving purposes, they address numerous grassroots struggles for justice and against oppression, particularly looking at struggles surrounding migrant justice, also indigenous movements for land and rights, while also struggles against colonialist wars today & the persisting impacts of wars past. thank you for listening ! stefan @spirodon
