We (Quinn) has been avoiding this question for quite a while. I even wrote a few thousand words about it a couple months ago and didn't publish it because it was a bit of a downer. But that's kind of malpractice in a way because we promised we don't shy away from the hard stuff even if the goal is to help you understand what you can do about it. Just like there's never really an optimal time in your life to get married, or have a baby, or get arrested, there's never a good time to talk about bird flu, which means it's always the right time to talk about bird flu, and especially when you've got the best of the best on the line. What can I do about bird flu? That's today's big question and my returning guest is the wonderful Dr. Nahid Bhadelia. Dr. Bhadelia is the founding director of the BU Center on Emerging Infectious Diseases. She's a board certified infectious diseases physician and an associate professor at the BU School of Medicine. She served as the Senior Policy Advisor for Global COVID 19 Response for the White House COVID 19 Response Team in 2022 and 2023, where she coordinated the interagency programs for global COVID 19 vaccine donations from the United States. Nahid was also the policy lead for Project NextGen, a 5 billion dollar health and human services program aimed at developing next generation vaccines and treatments for pandemic prone coronaviruses. She also served as the interim testing coordinator for the White House mpox response team and is the Director and Co-founder of Biothreats Emergence Analysis and Communications Network, or BEACON, an open source outbreak surveillance program. -----------Have feedback or questions? In this Monday episode of the brand new Ask Anna series, Anna is joined by Nahid de Belgeonne, Nervous System Whisperer, Author and Burnout, Anxiety and Trauma coach.Together Anna and Nahid tackle the following question: "About trauma . . . Does it affect your brain/ change how you think forever? I've had significant trauma, I've been to talking therapy and had EMDR. I can see massive improvements, but I wonder has it changed the core of me/ who I am/ how I think. This is the 100th episode of the Middling Along podcast! In a week of overwhelming world political developments, this podcast feels particularly timely... This time I welcome Nahid de Belgeonne: Nahid has had a varied career having previously worked fashion, publishing, technology and wellness. During her perimenopause, she swapped bricks and mortar studios in central London for her online clinic and now lives by the sea. Her Soothe Programme helps women recover from Burnout, anxiety and trauma and she has translated all her expertise into a book called ‘Soothe, the book your nervous system has been longing for.' Nahid talks to me about her own struggles with chronic anxiety, stress-related skin conditions, neuralgia, and almost dying from gangrenous appendicitis because she refused to listen to her own body - and subsequently learning how to ‘rewire' the brain through movement. Her in-depth research into why certain things work and why they are good for you led her to write ‘Soothe' and the programme it is based on. Listen to our chat to find out more about: How we are conditioned to do more, and more, and more…putting ourselves at the bottom of the priority list; How if you regulate yourself you also non-verbally regulate those around you - a win-win; How important it is to carve out time when your brain is not being constantly stimulated; How, if you are wholly engaged with what you are doing, your levels of contentment go up; That you feed information to your brain through your senses, interoception - listening in to the signals your body is sending you; Why we need to internalize our comfort instead of externalizing it; Why we need to be dealing with microstressors as they happen throughout the day instead of saving them all up and trying to ‘deal' with them at the end of the day. What the seemingly simple act of rocking can do for our bodies and brains. As Nahid says in the book: “The brain's job is to keep us alive by budgeting our resources…Your brain is constantly predicting what will happen to you next…” Our brains are working so incredibly hard in the modern world aren't they? Did you know that our visual distance gets fixed if sitting all day looking at a screen, which sends alarm signals to the brain. Walking in green spaces is a great antidote, even just for a short period of time - but walking in general is also helpful, the way our eyes move when we walk is also calming for our brains! Nahid also suggests that we treat your phones as a rare and precious commodity rather than an appendage! The importance of social connections and interactions for a healthy nervous system cannot be underestimated...there's so much more in this episode I'd love you to discover. For now, I'll leave you with my favourite quote from the book: “...what if ambition, speed and acquisition were not the only human goals? What if we also valued sensing, exploring, learning, the beauty of the process, resting, creating, pausing, resetting, repairing, calibrating, or even compassionately being?” You can find more about Nahid's work on her website: www.thehumanmethod.co.uk Buy the book at https://www.waterstones.com/book/soothe/nahid-de-belgeonne/9781800817104 You can find her on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thehumanmethoduk/ You can also find her on Substack: https://nahiddebelgeonne.substack.com/ If you enjoy the podcast please help us grow by sharing this episode, or writing a short review online! In this hybrid political thriller and verité portrait documentary, A REVOLUTION ON CANVAS, Sara Nodjoumi, working with co-director and husband, Till Schauder, makes her directorial debut with this personal film, diving into the mystery surrounding the disappearance of more than 100 "treasonous" paintings by her father, seminal Iranian modern artist Nickzad Nodjoumi. The film follows Sara Nodjoumi as she traces a timeline of events, discovering her father's ongoing activism, his complicated relationship with her mother, artist Nahid Hagigat, and how the implications of his incendiary art impacted the trajectory of their family's future together. In 1980, Nickzad Nodjoumi (more commonly known as Nicky Nodjoumi) fled Iran in the wake of the Islamic Revolution. With his life in danger due to the controversial nature of his paintings on show at the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art, he joined his wife, Nahid, and daughter, Sara, in New York City, restlessly living in exile and continuing to paint. 40 years later, Sara begins an investigation to track down and reclaim her father's lost artwork from Tehran. As the investigation deepens, she unearths the emotionally charged story of her family mirrored in the political and cultural upheavals of her parents' homeland. Having participated in the pro-democracy movement to oust the Shah of Iran in the 1970s, Nicky's hope for a new Iran crumbled with the ascendance of an authoritarian regime. His provocative paintings, now depicting the new Islamic power brokers, were quickly seized, and rumored to be destroyed by radical Islamists or stowed away in the basement of the museum. As new protests ignite the streets of Iran in 2022, Sara and Nicky contact former workers at the museum determined to find someone on the ground in Tehran who can help locate the paintings but are stymied in their efforts until a contact in Tehran unexpectedly gains access to the museum's unseen basement and archival collection. Co-producers and co-directors Sara Nodjoumi and Till Schauder join us for a conversation on Sara's deeply personal inquiry into her family and the central events of her parents' life, paying tribute to their art while unveiling the complexity and longing that comes with living in exile from one's ancestral home. Nahid de Belgeonne, a yoga educator, author and Feldenkrais practitioner discusses the importance of movement and the connection between the body and mind. Nahid argues that our bodies are dynamic organisms that need to be engaged and not confined to a sedentary lifestyle. She mentions the development of talking therapies that incorporate physicality, such as sensory motor psychotherapy and somatic experiencing, to address the need for a holistic approach to mental health. Nahid suggests that having a good relationship with oneself is crucial for building healthy connections with others. She emphasizes the importance of understanding and regulating our own nervous systems in order to create a positive environment for ourselves and those around us. We discuss how our bodies can unintentionally shut others out and the need to practice being comfortable within a system of coexistence. Nahid then talks about her upcoming book, "Soothe," which combines scientific research and practical techniques to help readers understand and regulate their nervous systems. The book covers various aspects of the nervous system, including its context, influences, and ways to recover and reset in moments of emotional distress. The conversation shifts to the role of movement in emotional well-being, with Nahid explaining that even individuals with restricted movement or injuries can benefit from engaging in movement-focused activities. She mentions the use of imagination to simulate movement when physical limitations are present. The discussion concludes with a reflection on the importance of self-care and finding what works best for oneself. Naheed shares her personal journey of using movement to soothe her anxiety and emphasizes the need for a balanced approach to self-improvement and compassion towards oneself and the environment. https://nahiddebelgeonne.substack.com/ https://www.amazon.co.uk/Soothe-book-nervous-system-longing/dp/180081710X/ref=sr_1_7?crid=3L4V4303AHM9U&keywords=soothe&qid=1695472552&sprefix=soothe%2Caps%2C86&sr=8-7

Programledare: Martin WicklinProducent: Fanny HedenmoKontakt: sondagsintervjun@sr.se
The first time he went to a Christian church, during the time of the Islamic revolution in Iran, Mansour Khajehpour was a teenager. He went only to determine the best way to burn down the church building. But the woman who opened to door was caring and kind—and her Christlike kindness altered the direction of Mansour's life. The woman pointed Mansour to a Farsi-speaking pastor. Over the months to come, that pastor answered Mansour's many questions—but only one question per week—and gave him a Bible. At first, Mansour's heart was hard, but over time God softened him until the day he found himself closing his eyes, praying in a loud voice and committing his life to Christ. Today, Mansour is the pastor of a church in Seattle and a leader in the Iranian Bible Society, working to get God's Word into the Islamic Republic of Iran and to Farsi-speaking people in other nations as well. Listen as Mansour shares how three older missionaries made an impact on his life for the Lord and how he became involved—through his future wife, Nahid, who is now the Executive Director—in the Iranian Bible Society. Together they both experienced persecution for their Christian faith. Friends and pastors Mansour and Nahid knew well were martyred. Listen to Mansour tell how their examples were an inspiration, especially Pastor Hossein Soodmand's deep love and respect for God's Word. Mansour will encourage listeners to memorize scripture and spiritual songs—which provided him great help and hope in prison for his faith. Pray for Mansour and Nahid's continued work providing Bibles for our Iranian brothers and sisters, and for the persecuted church inside Iran.

How can we be fully human? Seems like an obvious question, but when the demands (stress/trauma) of our culture & lived experience asks us to show up more like a machine than an organic being, it's a valid one. Nahid de Belgeonne, the founder of The Human Method, believes “our modern times are relentless and our nervous system just isn't built for this kind of onslaught.” So how can we calm our anxious & nervous brains? How can we meet the overwhelming daily catastrophe of our climate, our culture, and our world and remain human and feeling in the face of it? Nahid suggests the answer isn't sitting in silence, seated meditation trying to be quiet. Instead, we need to befriend the “Master System” and work with our nervous system to better regular our selves. In this podcast, we discuss & experience: What does an unregulated nervous system look like? We taste the The Human Method with a 5 min practice Mind/body heirarchy & why “you are more body than you are mind” Habits & how our body/physiology impacts our thoughts How to trust our body & the reclamation of awareness Breaking the rules of spiritual practices & why silent, seated meditation doesn't often work About Nahid de Belgeonne The Human Method™ - the brainchild of Somatic Movement coach, breath and yoga teacher Nahid de Belgeonne, is a radical re-learning system that works to intelligently harmonise the mind and body, dynamically transforming the health of everyone from exhausted and burned-out high fliers, A-list celebrities, and athletes right through to clients recovering from illness, injury, sleep issues, stress, and anxiety. 68-year-old German citizen, Nahid Taghavi has been held hostage in Iran since 16 October 2020. The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention and Amnesty International have both stated that her detention is arbitrary and have called for her immediate release. Members of the German Bundestag from multiple parties have also stated that Nahid is unjustly detained and have called for her release too. Many things have happened in Iran in the last year. On this episode, we have the honour of speaking once again to Nahid's daughter, Mariam Claren who brings us up to speed on her mother's case. Nahid was released on medical furlough in July last year and was summoned back to Iran's notorious Evin prison 45 minutes after the German Chancellor criticised Iran's brutal crackdown on protests sparked by the murder of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody. We also discuss the release of French academic Fariba Adelkhah, German citizen and U.S. resident Jamshid Sharmahd being sentenced to death as well as what the Iranian regime, German government and international community should do. We end this episode talking about how journalists and the public can help free Nahid Taghavi and Jamshid Sharmahd. If you prefer, you can watch the video version of this interview on YouTube. Sam and Emma host Nahid Siamdoust, Assistant Professor of Middle East and Media Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, to discuss the recent political protests in Iran. Then, they are joined by Eli Friedman, professor at the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations and author of author of The China Question: Toward Left Perspectives, edited with Kevin Lin and Ashley Smith, to discuss the recent protests in China. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on yesterday's Georgia Primary, Trump Inc.'s fraud charges, today's Supreme Court case, and more! Then Professor Nahid Siamdoust joins as she dives right into the current strike in Iran, exploring where we are in its broader course, before jumping back to the leadup to the Iranian revolution to explore the role of students – and the trust the Iranian populace has in them – in the country's culture of revolution. Expanding on this, Prof. Siamdoust walks through the widespread nature of the current protests in Iran, extending well beyond the university to women throughout the nation, and across the massive ethnic patchwork from Kurdistan to Turks and beyond. Next, they jump to the murder of Mahsa Amini by the Iranian morality police, exploring the rising tension between the theocratic regime and its diverse array of citizens, before jumping back to trace the inception of the Morality Police from the wake of the Iranian revolution. Wrapping up, they discuss the remaining social group that has yet to be fully won over by the protestors (the military and police) and what that fight currently looks like. Eli Friedman then joins as he gets right into contextualizing the last couple of weeks in China, and the protest that has risen from their “Zero Covid” policy, tackling the development of the Chinese public opinion for these policies, and the country's relationship to covid writ large. Next, they tackle China's history with mass protest movements, outlining the vast differences between these protests and the pro-democracy movement in 1989, and walking through the various current tensions in China's relationship with Democracy and the West. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss their criticism of CNN's one-sided rail labor coverage, parse through Warnock's victory in Georgia and the right's internal civil war coming to the fore as Herschel's relationships to Cruz, Graham, and Trump fail to take him to the Senate. Tucker Carlson reminds people that trans folks aren't their only threat – brown immigrants exist too! Madeline King talks anti-communism, Ben Shapiro discusses the First Amendment right of being a Theocrat that cracks down on First Amendment rights, and Vince from Virginia dives into the lingering issues around the midterms and Supreme Court, plus, your calls and IMs! It was just a year ago that the U.S. withdrew its troops from Afghanistan. On that date, Nahid Shahalimi, an Afghan female writer living in Germany, realized that she needed to hurry to record the stories of prominent Afghan women who soon would try to escape their country, or stay and risk death. She did so, and compiled their stories in “We Are Still Here.” The world's attention has turned to the crisis in Ukraine, but Afghanistan is still there and should not be forgotten, particularly the stories of women oppressed by the Taliban. This week, a conversation with Nahid Shahalimi, as she writes, “Listen to these women. See them. See their commitment to freedom and to their rights." On 16 October 2020, 66 year old German citizen Nahid Taghavi decided to go for a walk near her apartment in Tehran. It was a week after she had surgery and Nahid had high blood pressure. Within moments, she was surrounded by 12 armed men from the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps also known as the IRGC. She was arrested and taken to the notorious Evin prison where she remains to this day.The European Parliament has passed a resolution calling on Iran to drop all charges against Nahid Taghavi. Members of the German Bundestag from multiple political parties have stated that Nahid is unjustly detained and called for her release. Amnesty International has called Nahid Taghavi a prisoner of conscience. Nahid's daughter believes she is being used as a bargaining chip by the IRGC to extract concessions from the German government. This would be hostage diplomacy. We had the honour of interviewing Nahid's daughter, Mariam Claren in October 2021. Since then there have been significant developments around the JCPOA Iran nuclear deal negotiations in Vienna where talks on the release of foreign nationals wrongfully imprisoned in Iran are taking place at the same time. The families of these innocent individuals are worried that their loved ones may be left behind. On this episode, we speak once again to Mariam Claren. She talks about the possibility of her mother being released as part of the JCPOA deal, the possibility of her mother being left behind and how she's been coping with this constant trauma. Mariam also tells us what the German government, the European Union, journalists and the public can do to help free Nahid Taghavi.Follow Pod Hostage Diplomacy on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to keep up to date with our work.Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/PodHostageDiplo)
