The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools board is getting closer to voting on its upcoming district goals for academic achievement for the next four years.For weeks, the board has debated on what goals the district should set out to both challenge the district and have a guiding light to shape board directives that are student-focused. Every five years, CMS centers itself around new goals and guardrails that can range from increasing literacy among elementary school students to ensuring a safe environment for its students at school activities. CMS Superintendent Crystal Hill made a final recommendation on four goals for the 2024 through 2029 school years. First, students in kindergarten through second grade scoring at or above grade level in early literacy will go from 67% to 91% by 2029. The 28-year-old Frenchwoman will return to the Top 20 after capturing her 10th career title and third WTA 1000 title, after defeating Petra Kvitova in straight sets.  Garcia joins the podcast to discuss her return to a more aggressive game and how difficult it was to navigate the five years between her breakout 2017 season and now.

Serena Williams' quest for a 24th Grand Slam title continued Saturday but she had to rally against a rejuvenated Sloane Stephens at the US Open.Williams lost the first set before prevailing 2-6 6-2 6-2 to reach the fourth round, her serve -- and legendary desire to win -- playing a big factor at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.Fans are being kept away this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, with the tournament operating a bubble similar to other sports. But there watching Williams was her daughter, Olympia, and husband Alexis Ohanian.The 38-year-old Williams faces another stern test on Monday when she meets Greece's Maria Sakkari -- who beat her last week.The turnaround for Williams against Stephens came at 2-2 in the second, when she saved a break point before breaking for 4-2 against the 2017 champion.Through the first five games of the second set, Stephens -- who wore a Black Lives Matter mask entering the court -- had been getting much the better of the baseline exchanges.She hit 13 winners and only five unforced errors in ground stroke exchanges while Williams tallied 14 unforced errors and just seven winners.After the key two-game swing, though, Williams raised her game. She didn't face another break point and finished with 12 aces.When Williams broke for 3-1 in the third, Stephens' chances all but evaporated.Confidence boostThe victory is sure to be a confidence booster for Williams after suffering upset quarterfinal losses at two warmup events when she held commanding leads. That included against Sakkari at the Western & Southern Open, when Williams led by a set and 5-3.If she goes all the way in New York, Williams would tie Margaret Court for the all-time lead in Grand Slam titles.Even in defeat, it's the type of outing that could kick-start Stephens' career. No one has ever questioned her talent but Stephens has struggled since reaching the French Open final in 2018.She entered the US Open with a 1-7 record in 2020 and only got a seeding of 26th when other players pulled out of the draw.Besides Williams' family, fellow players Naomi Osaka, Dominic Thiem, Sofia Kenin and Petra Kvitova took in the action from their luxury suites on Arthur Ashe that would otherwise go to corporate sponsors and guests.Saturday's most dramatic contest saw Karolina Muchova -- who beat Venus Williams in the first round -- save three match points to defeat Sorana Cirstea of Romania 6-2 2-6 7-6 (7).The Czech became the latest player to save match points en route to victory this week, following Andy Murray, Aliaksandra Sasnovich, Cameron Norrie and Varvara Gracheva.In a sizable upset in the men's draw, Canada's unseeded Vasek Pospisil beat Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut 7-5 2-6 4-6 6-3 6-2. As the U.S. Open got underway amid the pandemic today, seven players were put in what one described as a "bubble in the bubble" because they were in contact with Benoit Paire, the Frenchman dropped from the tournament after testing positive for the coronavirus, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press.The seven players were not identified to the AP by the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the U.S. Tennis Association has not announced the names of anyone involved.But two players from France acknowledged their involvement: Kristina Mladenovic, who is seeded 30th in women's singles, and Edouard Roger-Vasselin, who is entered in men's doubles."We cannot confirm any numbers or names of players due to health laws," tournament director Stacey Allaster said. "In the case of Edouard Roger-Vasselin, as he has publicly stated he is one of a select number of players in the enhanced protocol plan, I can confirm that he is one of those players."Mladenovic acknowledged after her first-round victory on Day 1 at the Grand Slam tournament that her movements were restricted because she spent time with Paire. She said she practiced with Paire for about an hour and spent 30-40 minutes playing cards with him and others in the lobby of a hotel being used by the USTA for what it has called a "controlled environment.""I am basically in a new 'bubble in the bubble,' so there's not very much I'm allowed to do, which makes it tough for me to compete and mentally be kind of fresh and ready," said Mladenovic, who doubled over and let out a loud yell after beating Hailey Baptiste of the United States 7-5, 6-2.Asked to describe what she can and cannot do, Mladenovic chuckled."Let's make it simple: I'm allowed to play my match," she said. Victoria Azarenka ended a 12-month winless drought in style at the 2020 Western & Southern Open, not only capturing her first main draw match win since the summer of 2019, but her first title since 2016 and her first title since returning to the tour as a mother.  Azarenka joins the podcast to reflect on her resurgent week in New York, why she came close to retirement in January, and why, no matter whether she's winning or losing, we just can't stop talking about her.

They wanted social reform.The Milwaukee Bucks showed how far they're willing to go to get it by opting not to play in their playoff game Wednesday. Two more games were postponed later in the day, the second time this season NBA basketball came to an immediate halt.Other sports followed, just as they did in March when the season was suspended four months because of the coronavirus pandemic.This time, the players will decide how long the stoppage lasts."The biggest thing that we all understand is if we're not playing, what are we doing? What are we doing to show and to help what's going on outside this bubble?" Boston Celtics forward Grant Williams said, shortly before the Bucks were scheduled to tip off their game against the Orlando Magic.Instead, the Bucks players remained in the locker room, finally emerging hours later to read a statement demanding action from lawmakers and encouraging voting by citizens.They changed the narrative across the entire sports landscape, putting the focus squarely on social justice reform in protest of the shooting of Jacob Blake, a Black man, by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin, while three of his children in his car looked on.While players and teams from baseball, the WNBA, MLS and tennis sat out their competitions Wednesday night, NBA players and coaches met for nearly three hours in a Disney hotel to determine next steps, including whether the season should continue. They did not come to a consensus, a person with knowledge of the meeting told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because details weren't revealed publicly.The NBA's board of governors will meet Thursday morning and likely address whether the playoff games scheduled for that day will be played. The Western & Southern Open won't be, with the U.S. Tennis Association, along with the ATP and WTA Tours, announcing play would be paused after two-time Grand Slam women's champion Naomi Osaka had already said she wouldn't play her semifinal match."I don't expect anything drastic to happen with me not playing, but if I can get a conversation started in a majority white sport I consider that a step in the right direction," Osaka tweeted.
