Mercury is in Retrograde and so is Madrid. We're here for our not-so-regularly scheduled episode to talk less about tennis and more about the multiverse of madness that is tennis and pop culture colliding. Miranda prepared a quiz about the fame and popularity of tennis players in honor of the Met Gala. Katie gives her dream teams for the Laver Cup, including the addition of another team of her favorite oldies. In terms of tennis, because we are a tennis podcast, we discuss Daniil Medvedev's theatrics on court, the renaissance of Aslan Karatsev (the Aslanaissance, if you will), and thirst over Borna Coric, despite how he tries to hide his face and hair with a hat. Iga Swiatek will face Aryna Sabalenka's in Saturday's Madrid final which means the rivalry we've all wanted is officially happening. David, Catherine (in Madrid) and Matt talk through how both players have got there, Swiatek's intensity and focus this week, and the way in which Sabalenka is embracing the prospect of a rematch with the world number one. On the men's side, we look ahead to the Carlos Alcaraz vs Borna Coric and Aslan Karatsev vs Jan-Lennard Struff semi-finals. Yes, you read that correctly, Karatsev and Struff have made it all the way to the last four. We chat about how this run has come out of nowhere for Karatsev, the way in which Struff went toe-to-toe with a jaded-looking Stefanos Tsitsipas, and how much their qualifying match will affect Friday's semi. Elsewhere, we react to the news that Emma Raducanu will be out of action for several months while she recovers from hand and ankle surgery, and we discuss why it's time for Madrid to stop having model ball girls. Kosta thanks God after every comedy set, bees are fish, Borna Coric, thanks for listening, etc.
Borna "Born Again" Coric and "Sweet" Caroline Garcia are your singles winners for Cincinnati 2022. I apologize for the obligatory puns and will do better next time. Borna Coric absolutely punished the yellow spheroid this week. Stefanos Tsitsipas has some issues he needs to work out. Caroline Garcia exhibited a great deal of poise. Petra Kvitova didn't leave with a trophy but still had a great week. Plus - I read US Open advertisements! Also the schedule for qualifying week. THANKS for listening. Time for a few days off.
On Wednesday at the Western & Southern Open, Borna Coric defeated the #2 seed Rafael Nadal 7-6(9), 4-6, 6-3. How did both players look during the match? Where has Coric been the last few years? Why is Nadal's Cincinnati record so poor and what are his worst tournaments on tour? Is Nadal healthy? What happens next in "El Race?" I discuss all the angles from Nadal's match today and play Rafa's post-match press conference audio in its entirety. Also on today's pod: Paul and Shapovalov played a strange one. Jabeur escapes McNally. Raducanu rolls. Swiatek gets back on the horse. Stefanos Tsitsipas finally at long long last won a sporting contest that involved hitting a little yellow ball back and forth. 7 of the 8 Canada singles semifinalists are gone; only Pegula remains. Go Gators.
Catherine, David and Matt get together for a catch up at the halfway point in Cincinnati. There's chat about the gruelling turnaround after Canada, some high profile withdrawals from the women's draw, why Serena Williams vs Emma Raducanu wasn't the memorable occasion we expected, Raducanu's improved form, Iga Swiatek's criticism of the balls, struggles for Naomi Osaka, the emergence of Ben Shelton, Rafael Nadal's defeat to Borna Coric, and Andy Murray's cramping issues.
