Jon Workman is Vice President - Industrial Hemp Business Development at American Cannabis Company and President - Arkansas Hemp Assoc. He has had a long career in the industry, starting out growing up on a farm in Arkansas, getting into the finance industry in California, having much success, then a random snowboarding accident revealed he had multiple myeloma. Given 3 years to live, he was hit with another disease called TTP ( Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura). He shares, "I was in the hospital for over 60 days at City of Hope in Los Angeles, I was down to about 139 pounds. I'm six-one and it didn't look real real good on me. In fact, I was scared I was going to not make it out of there. So I I took it upon myself to bring in some assistance in the form of cannabis edibles" While Jon would not say cancer cured him, it definitely helped ease his recovery and he's gone on to be in remission since shortly after his last bone marrow transplant to address his TTP. In his own words, "I am a stage 2 cancer survivor of multiple myeloma bone marrow cancer. After two bone marrow transplants and countless hours in the infusion room getting the poison they call chemotherapy I can say I didn't know if I was going to survive. Fast forward 19 years later and looking back I see with clarity that my survival was comforted by the use of medicinal cannabis. Now I am here to share my story in an industry that is growing like a weed (bad joke)." Jon discusses his entrance into the hemp and cannabis industry, moving back to his home state of Arkansas, being inspired and encouraged by a childhood best friend to enter the cannabis industry; "at the end of the day, I came to think that it's what brought me to where I am, it saved me in some ways, and it's a message. I think that it's something God really wants me to do. I really you're put in places in your life and sometimes it's just opportunistic, but at the same time, I think it's a thing called luck. What is luck? I think John Wooden called it "when opportunity meets preparation meets opportunity" ". Jon describes his current role with American Cannabis Company; "with what happened in 2018 with the new farm bill, at the beginning of this year it transitioned my role at American Cannabis Company to the role I'm in now, which is the Vice President of Hemp Business Development. And so throughout this year, I've been working with farmers throughout the country to basically offer the same services we did with our marijuana but, but more for outdoor applications, then of course, indoor and there are quite a few greenhouse operations that we consult with as well for hemp, but we've been involved with quite a few different states and in these states are university pilot programs. In fact, just this morning, about two hours ago, we got the release of the USDA interim rules on hemp cultivation, for 2020. crop year. This is the first USDA rules we've had since well since 1937" Jon continues to outline his extensive involvement in the cannabis industry," I also work with a team of cannabis industry professionals to help individuals and organizations gain entry into the legal recreational and medical marijuana industry. We provide business to business consultative services for dispensaries, grow operations and extraction facilities. Our team is dedicated to providing real-world solutions for the ever-changing cannabis markets in the U.S. and abroad." There's much more within this rich episode. Thanks so much to Jon Workman for this education on overcoming adversity and finding inspiration and motivation within and without the cannabis industry; "When people I meet ask me what I do in the industry, I usually reply with, "I connect the dots for those that are trying to start an industrial hemp business as well as find markets for them to sell their product." Simply put my approach is to provide my customers with Best of Class products and service which I do on a daily basis." Thank you Jon! With the season drawing to a close we finally get our first look at Dr. Manhattan, and get to spend some time in what we perceive as his past. Much like the Watchmaker chapter from the original comic, the episode attempts to translate Manhattan’s perception of time by exposing the audience to interconnected and overlapping periods in his life. A conversation over beers with Angela provides a through-line as the episode jumps between various events; including a young Jon Osterman having his first voyeuristic experience, Veidt explaining his first plan to neutralize Dr. Manhattan, Jon adopting Cal’s existence, and Veidt’s retirement to Europa. Back in 2019 Angela is forced to sacrifice her husband’s demure, family man persona, in order to warn Manhattan of the impending attack. While Jon reconnects with Angela, he is having his first/last conversation with her grandfather in 2009, and the pitfalls of “time travel” are displayed. With the 7th Kalvary descending on them time is running out for the indestructible man; once again, the most powerful being in existence is the prisoner of providence, and once again he is too late. Always has been, always will be. Too late.

THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast

How does a guy go from once working as a commodities trader in Chi-town, to becoming a successful country songwriter and artist along with being an entrepreneur selling his own name brand Tequila?  Well, in this interview with Jon Wolfe, we’ll get the skinny on it all. Jon’s journey as a musician and songwriter is unique.  While he knew he was always drawn to music, he didn’t take it seriously until college when picked up the guitar and realized he really had a passion for it.  After graduation, and following his employer transferring him from Chicago to Houston, Jon started playing open mic nights which eventually led to a relationship with John Evans who was one of his first influencers and really helped him work on his songwriting.  As Jon immersed himself in the Texas music scene, he eventually got to know a few other artists and even was roommates with Hayes Carll for a time. Eventually, Jon ended up in Nashville with a deal and was writing up to 3 times a day on Music Row where he was able to learn a lot and cultivate his craft which he talks about in the interview. When the deal fell through, Jon ended up moving back to Texas and putting his solo career as a Texas Country Music artist into motion. While Jon continues to build his career as a country music artist in Texas, he’s also been working over the last couple of years to develop his own brand of Tequila.  He’s proud to announce that Juan Lobo Tequila is now available in many Texas locations and he and his team are working on expanding their reach. I Feel Uncomfortable Talking About Sex

Something Like Marriage

I am going to be honest, I feel uncomfortable talking about sex. Sex was not really a topic we had practice talking about with anyone. While Jon was caught up in a cycle of abstinence and binging, I was in my own cycle of repression and avoiding. Jon's work in therapy was to begin talking openly about his sexual experiences and his guilt and shame about his sexuality. He found the practice to be freeing and healing. His dark secret and life with porn were now known, and he used the opportunity to develop a healthy adult relationship with sex. While I was in the therapy group with other women related to Jon's secret life, the work we did in the group was centered around my self-care and not being obsessed with what Jon was or wasn't doing in his life. I had no practice sharing anything about sex, and wanted it that way! I find it to be difficult to talk about sex because it can be painful for me. There is a barrier for me to walk through when discussing my own sexuality or even engaging in sex. The work I have to do will be messy, but I am now choosing to heal my sexual wounds. Next week I will be brave and share my story. (Theme music: Ethan Anderson, Photo credit: Milan Surbatovic) Stream "I Feel Uncomfortable Talking About Sex"  Relationship Podcast Gems: Jon is comfortable talking about sex now, but he had a lot of shame and secrets when he was young. Jon learned what healthy adult sexuality really was through his recovery groups, talking, and reading. As a child, we have different perspectives of our experiences and take on responsibilities, guilt, and shame that wasn't ours. Men tend to talk about the act of sex, not the feelings of fear, and excitement. Experiencing it as a kid alone is difficult...fear, excitement, shame and pleasure. Jema did not practice talking about her sexuality but avoided all conversations about sex. The cultural norms around sexuality are so different - boys are almost encouraged to explore their body, it doesn't seem to be the same for girls. Jon forgets that it is difficult for Jema, he needs reminders that this work is painful. Jema's lack of curiosity about Jon's sexuality made him feel unimportant and unloved. Being on the journey as a couple, and then with other couples has created such profound healing in our life. Your Next Steps: Join our email list for new episodes and articles.

Straight from Gabe's basement, the three of us bring you magic, in this 28th episode of the Thinking Outside the Long Box Podcast. We interview three amazing people, and get to listen to Jon while he readies the Hall of Justice!! While Jon is busy bagging and boarding THOUSANDS of back issue comic books, Gabe and Juan get to enjoy the sultry cooking of Mel, from Gabe's basement! All of your favorite TV shows, movies, and comic books are back with a BANG!! When the three of us get together, anything can happen, and you'll never think of the song Scatman, the same again!! Aside from the awesome conversation with each other, we also have three amazing interviews!! The first interview comes from Alex Paknadel, the writer of BOOM! Studios' Arcadia! This interview is so different from most of the interviews we do, and that is a good thing!! Not only do we talk about BOOM! and Arcadia, but we also find out a lot about Alex' views of the whole world in general, especially when it comes to technology. We find out that Alex is a soon to be father, and what gross things he's most afraid of! Interview number two, is joining us for a second time, after having been interviewed for our Fort Collins Comic Con episode. Kaai, of Nerd 2 Go Magazine, joins us at the podcast table, metaphorically.......This magazine sounds absolutely amazing!! It doesn't focus on only one aspect of nerd culture, and this is what makes it great!! You'll get an inside look at comic books, cosplay, table top games, and so much more!! The first issue will hit in January, and we will definitely be one of the first to ensure we read it!! Plus, maybe look for us in the magazine in the future! Our last interview is with Russ Lippitt. He is the brainchild, and writer, behind The Showdown! It is an amazing mix of cars, and horror! Why are all of these famous monsters holding races in Hell? The only way to know that amazing answer, is to make sure you go check out this book! Trust me, you won't want to miss out on all the antics that go down in the inferno!! From the first year of FOCO Comic Con, we bring you this 26th episode of the Thinking Outside the Long Box podcast!! It just so happens to be the anniversary of our podcast!! That's right, this is officially 1 year together as the coolest pop culture podcast ever!! While Jon is away at the Ska Brewing anniversary event in Durango, Gabe and Juan hold down the fort at the comic con! From what we were told, the Ska Brewing event was a success, and we hopefully will hear some audio from that show in the next episode!! As is typical at the comic cons, we don't normally have "interviews" scheduled! But, we do have some awesome conversations with people who are at the show!! As you've heard us tout many times, we are part of an amazing comic book group here in Colorado, aptly named the Colorado Comic Book Enthusiasts! We have a great conversation with Nathaniel, Keith, and Jason! If you live in Colorado, and love comic books, you should definitely look us up!! HOLY cow do we have some other awesome conversations!! The Comicstorian drops by to drop some comic knowledge on us, and plus their videos are hilarious!! We also hear from Kaai in Cosplay, who is developing Nerd2Go magazine, which sounds like something I want to read, and something you need to be looking into! We are sitting next to Arachna from Beware Theater, and she talks to us all about the amazing black and white movies, that were so bad they were awesome! We also have a short (PA guys was SUPER loud), but great conversation with Saro Hang. Saro is a local Colorado artist, who is also part of Red Team Go Colorado! This is a group of writers, artists, designers, etc. who get together and encourage/help each other. Definitely a tight nit group who is looking to do nothing but push each other to be the best! Remember, you can ALWAYS let us know what you think! We can only think of so many things to talk about every other week, and would LOVE to get some feedback and ideas from all of you out there who are listening!! Deconstructing Dinner at the Dairy Farmers of Canada On February 5, 2009, Deconstructing Dinner's Jon Steinman addressed the Dairy Farmers of Canada at their annual policy conference in Ottawa. The Dairy Farmers of Canada is the national policy, lobbying and promotional organization representing Canada's 14,600 dairy farms. According to the organization, they strive to create favourable conditions for the Canadian dairy industry, today and in the future. They work to maintain policies that foster the viability of Canadian dairy producers and promote dairy products and their health benefits. The organization is run for producers, by producers and has existed since 1934. To help speak to the organization's interest to prepare for the future, Jon's talk focused on the rapidly changing perspectives of food and farming among Canada's urban populations. The talk was not void of the critical approach that Deconstructing Dinner uses when covering the many issues addressed on the show and used as a foundation for the talk was a magazine-style publication titled the Real Dirt on Farming - a tool designed to communicate agricultural education to Canada's urban populations. While Jon commended the effort put into the publication, there was much to be found within deserving of a critical eye. Rally for Farms, Farmers & Food Security On April 18, the Farms, Farmers & Food Security rally was held in front of the British Columbia Legislature in Victoria. The intention of the rally was to raise awareness of the many underreported concerns around food and agriculture leading up to British Columbia's May 12 provincial election. Members of the three major political parties were invited, and The Green Party and NDP were both in attendance. The BC Liberals were not. Event co-organizer Jordan Marr ensured the rally was recorded for Deconstructing Dinner listeners. Guests Tom Henry, Editor, Small Farm Canada (Metchosin, BC) - Small Farm Canada is a national magazine promoting small-scale farming as a legitimate and viable endeavour. The magazine's editorial position is that the lives of small-scale farmers and their families are worthy, complex and rich in possibility, and that the communities serving small-scale farmers are unique and dynamic. Tom farms on Vancouver Island. Voices Jordan Marr - Farmer (Sooke, BC) - In 2006 Jordan graduated from a bachelor program in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems at the University of British Columbia, and then apprenticed for seven months on an organic farm in Nova Scotia. Jordan now farms in East Sooke. Brent Warner - , White Loaf Ridge Management (Saanich, BC) - White Loaf Ridge Management Company (WLR) is an independent contractor that was born out of interest on the part of owner Charlie Touchette, to satisfy the agricultural industry with educational and business development opportunities in order to nurture the livelihood of families who operate farms. Brent spent 20+ years working for British Columbia's Ministry of Agriculture & Lands and serves as the interim Executive Director of Farmers' Markets Canada. Linda Geggie - Food Policy, LifeCycles Project Society (Victoria, BC) - LifeCycles is a nonprofit organization dedicated to cultivating awareness and initiating action around food, health, and urban sustainability in the Greater Victoria community. We work proactively to promote and create personal, shared and community gardens, research, and educational activities and youth skills development programs.
