Our first segment this episode features the all new KTM 250 Duke. I think we can all agree that little bikes are fun. Especially if you're coming off a liter-bike or even a fast middleweight, a smaller bike by comparison feels lightweight, flickable and so easy to ride. We loved the KTM Duke 200 a few years back when we had it on extended loan, however it did feel just a teensy bit underpowered when we ventured out beyond the city, and especially if we had to take to a freeway or two. KTM has addressed that, and with new Duke 250 adding another 50cc, it makes a huge difference. Don Williams and Kelly Callan spent some time with the new KTM 250 Duke, and they absolutely loved it. Our guest this week is Brian Case, Executive Director of the Barber Motorsports Museum in Alabama; home to one of the greatest motorcycle collections anywhere. A few months back, Teejay Adams attended the glittering Motorcycles by Moonlight event dinner, held each year during the Barber Vintage Festival. It's a pretty magical event, and so Teejay finds out from Brian why it's a must-do event if you're at all interested in motorcycles. Oh and FYI… if you're on iOS, you can listen to this podcast on the new Faidr App. That's F-A-I-D-R, and it's a new concept in podcasting. Here's a quick reminder to leave us your comments on our social media—we're on all the usual platforms at Ultimate Motorcycling. We love hearing your feedback… so good or bad, please let us know what you think. If there's something you'd like us to cover, we'd love to hear those ideas too! @ultimatemotorcycling @UltimateMotoMag @UltimateMotorcycling producer@ultimatemotorcycling.com
In another special episode, Scott Bolton brings us interviews from the Barber Vintage Festival presented by BMW Motorrad, which has grown to become one of the largest vintage motorcycle gatherings in the world. Along with the several disciplines of AHMRA vintage racing, the festival features the Pro Challenge race which attracts current and past MotoAmerica Stars. This year King Kenny Roberts was the Grand Marshal, accompanied by his son Kenny Jr. 2000 GP500 World Champion. Scott was able to speak with Tyler Scott (02:15), Hayden Gillim, (07:16), Stefano Mesa (13:10) and Kenny Roberts Jr (17:38). Enjoy! Learn more at YamahaMotorsports.com In this week's first segment, Editors Don Williams and Nic de Sena tell us about the incredibly versatile KTM 890 SMT. Could this bike be an all-rounder? Every rider will see its strengths differently. The SM part stands for Supermoto, however the T actually means touring—and you're not touring when you're riding supermoto …or can you? There are even more uses for the SMT that aren't revealed in the three-letter designation, so Don and Nic push the starter button, and bring the LC8c parallel twin to life. In our second segment Teejay Adams chats with lady-racer Holly Varey. You may know that Holly was one of the competitors in Royal Enfield's brilliant BTR racing series in 2022 and 2023, and in the final race she finished on the podium. But there's a lot more to Holly's racing and she also wrenches and competes in several different AHRMA historic racing classes on a variety of machinery. Teejay caught up with Holly after the recent Barber Vintage Festival at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, AL. Holly is very articulate and descriptive, so it's fascinating to hear her talk about how she got started, what motivates her, and about some of the awesome motorcycles she's ridden along the way. Learn more at YamahaMotorsports.com In this week's first segment, Nic de Sena tells us all about the new Yamaha MT-09 SP. The SP comes hot on the heels of the standard MT-09 update earlier this year, with three key upgrades: top-shelf KYB suspension, Brembo brakes, and some interesting racetrack-inspired electronics. Interestingly, the MT-09 SP has now been joined by the long-awaited 2025 Yamaha YZF-R9. Revealed just last week, the track-only R9 is the larger sibling to the R7. It's got the same excellent triple-cylinder CP3 engine as the MT-09, yet the R9 is a full supersport machine that's positioned to go up against the other machines in the class. It'll be interesting to see how it fares, and as soon as we've had a chance to ride it, we'll let you know! In our second segment I chat with motorcycle racing royalty, 3-time 500cc World Champion ‘King' Kenny Roberts. Both Kenny and his son's world championship winning motorcycles—as well as one of Team KR's Proton MotoGP racebikes and all their memorabilia—is now all a permanent part of the Barber Motorsports Museum Collection. I sat down with Kenny at the recent Barber Vintage Festival, and he talks to me in his frank and funny style about almost everything. Why the bike now on display (his 1980 Grand Prix race-winning Yamaha YZR500) is his favorite race bike; what drove him to such extraordinary achievements; and what it was like to ride—and win—on the fearsome Yamaha TZ750 2-stroke dirt tracker that one time at the Indy Mile. Kenny candidly tells me what's different about the modern era race bikes compared to his era; why he wouldn't hire legend Max Biaggi to ride his KR MotoGP bike; what he thought of his fearsome rival Barry Sheene, and of course, with a twinkle in his eye—why he likes English women. It's a fascinating insight into one of the truly greatest motorcycle racers of all time. So, without further ado, from all of us here at Ultimate Motorcycling, we really think you're going to enjoy this episode! We love your feedback! This week we have a couple of unusual chats for you. In the first segment, Senior Editor Nic de Sena talks to Arthur Coldwells about the new Ohvale GP2 mini bike. This is a full race machine that is scaled down to work on kart tracks, and yet it is designed to give a rider the full racebike experience. The Ohvale is not a toy and many, many professional racers use one to enhance their skillset and help with their training. The second segment comes to you from the recent Barber Vintage Festival, held annually at Barber Motorsports Park in Leeds Alabama. George Barber himself was kind enough to spare a few minutes to chat about the new Advanced Design Center project that has been created on the top floor of the museum. Ably headed up by Brian Case of Motus Motorcycles fame, George Barber's Design Center is there to encourage and explore design. He has generously outfitted the center with every type of creative and production tool you can imagine, including a couple of high end 3D printing machines, and full clay-modelling capability. Brian Case has already collaborated with ex-Ducati designer Pierre Terblanche and their first project—done remotely with Pierre residing at home in South Africa I might add—is a modern take on the exquisite early 90s Ducati Super Mono, designed at the time by Pierre. The Advanced Design Center is a heck of a project and George Barber is justifiably proud of it. It is there to encourage and explore design, especially with young people who perhaps do not have the means to really explore their ideas or turn them into reality. If you're a designer with some ideas, please feel free to contact Brian Case at the Barber Advanced Design Center and talk to him about perhaps starting you off, or taking you to the next step in your career. His contact information is below. design@barbermuseum.org 2021 Ohvale GP-2 190 Review
In this episode I have a good old chinwag with Tony Sherriff, who did all types of motorcycle racing in the 1960s and 70s in New Zealand and Australia. Tony shares a lot of stories related to racing both on and off the track. We touch a little bit on how motorcycle technology has changed over the years, but much of what we discuss highlights the fact that while the motorcycles and the equipment have evolved over the years, the true spirit, adventure and excitement of motorcycles and motorcycle racing has definitely stayed the same…or maybe like a fine wine has gotten even better with age! We want to help out new and returning riders and give our input on what should be some of your first steps. With Jon on the Moto Amino app and hanging with the Dragon Krew, he meets Irishman. Irishman is a 23-year motorcycle veteran with well over 300k on sport and cruiser bikes. Then on top of that, he was a full-time MSF instructor while stationed in Japan and still fills in at Nash and Franklin County community colleges. We also want to thank Irishman for his service to our country as he served in the Marines for 15 years. We are once again happy to have KP Moto join us as well to provide his input as a young rider.Where to start:Take a training class - if you are new it's a great way to see if you like riding with out buying a bike. This week we introduce two new segments to the show, for times when we do not have an event, guest, or other original content style topic. The news roundup and spend my money segments proved to be good fun the first time out of the gate. New Roundup: Going forward, we plan to cover the news in a rapid fire style. One person will read the headline and summarize the story. Everyone else gets 60 seconds to respond and then on to the next topic. While Larry is finishing his epic trip across North America I had the pleasure of sitting down and talking with Alberto Hernandez. Alberto operates the YouTube channel Florida Outdoor Adventures. As always we discuss his riding background and where he is today. Once we finished the obligatory “tell me about your bikes section”, we turn the show towards his adventures and why he got into creating content for YouTube. I really enjoyed my conversation with Alberto and look forward to bumping into him at the Barber Vintage Festival this October if our schedules align. Rich and Rico grill Jon about his mountain trip with the MotoNobodies. The weekend trip for Jon was about 850 miles. The group was made up of the following moto vloggers:Cruiser BrewserAmp'd MotoRouge MogulMatthew WilliamsWolfSPDFNTK (Jon) - Jon has done a video about the Loud Pipes Podcast. Jon has fixed the video as it was pointed out at the 6 minute mark the spyder engine was louder than Jon.The group had a hard time getting all connected with Senas and figured out after the trip that the Sena BackPack that was used to capture audio to GoPro cameras maxes out at 3-4 riders. Another lesson learned from trip is that the night before, sit down (generally while drinking) and pair the units. Looks like the sena 30k will be using 2.4 GHz Adaptive Mesh-Networking Technology. The reviews said it will be easier to pair up units and we'll update if we get a chance to test it. Joining Rico in studio this week, we have a great conversation to share with everyone.Devah WalkemRides a 1939 80ci Harley Flathead and a 1980 Sturgis Harley (only 1400 of these ever created)Learned on a Yamaha ViragoFlathead upgraded from 45 to 80 cubic inch by her husband Wymand. The bike had low center of gravity and was a great bike being short of 5'4".Main reason Devah rides is the freedom and seeing new sights, and the feeling of different windsBeen riding for 35 years and has gone from Toronto to New Orleans as well as Toronto to SturgisOnce ran out of gas in Oregon and once off the highway, a gas truck pulled in behind and filled them up!Tips for riding vintage bikes is to be mechanically inclined, have a good back, and be prepared to be looked at.Tip for women is to carry a scarf that can be used for to keep you warm and cool.Best state to ride in the USA is Utah in Devah's opinion.Salt river canyon in particular is a great place.Having ridden on the back for many years, she enjoys the different feeling of being a passenger, which allows for looking around more at the scenery and Nagigation (new term for us) EVENTS:American Flat Track Race - Charlotte, NC April 1, 2017Moto Vlogger Spring Mountain Ride - April 7, 2017 - Going to be staying in Pigeon Forge, TN.Barber Vintage Festival - October 6th-8th, 2017 - Leeds, AlabamaRunning time: 53 minutesQuestions or comments: feedback@rdubstudios.com or the Feedback page

Our special guest Deb Gasque from The Fashionista has an IRON BUTT, joins us to share her long distance riding experience. Being someone who likes coffee as much as do, we swapped our usual barley with beans for this episodeBackgroundOriginally from Utah, Deb moved to South Carolina and lives with her husband and garage full of bikes. Starting out in 2006 as a passenger riding with her husband, she decided to take hold of the bars and ride her own.BikesSV650 was the first bike, but the husband felt this may be a bit much to learn on (see the next bike).Honda Rebel 250 - In response to the first bike, Deb was a little put off by the "baby bike" but eventually came to appreciate the weight for learning, especially picking it up. BMW GS650 (named GOAT after dropping a few times riding in the mountains)1994 BMW R1100 RS1994 BMW R1100 RSL - "new" bike :)The ideaDuring winter while not much riding is going on, Deb reads and article about about the Iron Butt. Being a lover of a good challenge, Deb started mapping out how to complete the Iron Butt SaddleSore 1000. The ridesAfter some conversation with her husband, the planning was on and off she went. After completing the first Iron Butt ride Deb fell in love with long distance riding and has been hooked since. In 2015 Deb completed the Bun Burner 1500 within the 36 allotted hours and covered 1600 miles. This year she is planning to do the 50CC. The plan is to leave from Jacksonville, FL and ride to San Diego CA. On her way back she is planning to stop at the Barber Vintage Festival. Look for the Loud Pipes crew to be there for an update on the ride as we enjoy our second trip to Barber. This episode was great fun for us and we look forward to catching up with Deb in the future.
