Since 1962 World Theatre Day has been celebrated by International Theatre Institute Centres, ITI Cooperating Members, theatre professionals, theatre organizations, theatre universities and theatre lovers all over the world on the 27th of March. This day is a celebration for those who can see the value and importance of the art form “theatre”, and acts as a wake-up-call for governments, politicians and institutions which have not yet recognised its value to the people and to the individual and have not yet realised its potential for economic growth. Says the World Theatre Day website. In this episode of BIC talks, we invited a cast of Bangalore theatre makers to speak to us about what they considered essential to their practice, to describe a toolbox, as it were, for a theatre artist highlighting what they felt necessary for mindful involvement in theatre. A second prompt was to pick a piece of text that has had an influence on their work. Subscribe to the BIC Talks Podcast on your favourite podcast app! BIC Talks is available everywhere, including iTunes, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Castbox, Overcast and Stitcher.

Sometimes I think that if all the world really is a stage ... then whoever does the casting needs to be fired. Since I was a very young man, theatre has been something that helped to pull me to a place of safety and belonging when the world was more than I could handle. This week, three amazing men to chat with. Gil Garratt, Artistic Director of the Blyth Festival Theatre, my old drama teacher Warren Robinson who along with his wife Eleanor, and Phil McMillan at GDCI in Goderich, nourished a young mans dreams of acting, singing and creating ... and our mutual friend and a fellow drama teacher from GDCI David Armour. It's all about the theatre this week on "A Life That's Good." #WorldTheatreDay

Sadler's Wells will showcase Deluxe as part of new Digital Stage - a free online performance platform, created in response to the cancellation of shows across its theatres as part of efforts to curb the spread of Covid-19. Deluxe will form part of the launch on Friday 27 March 2020, World Theatre Day, which can be accessed via Sadler's Wells Facebook page at 7.30 pm and will be available for seven days - so mark this in your diaries! Just as Covid-19 was starting to hit London, we interviewed BalletBoyz Artistic Directors, former Royal Ballet Dancers Michael Nunn and William Trevitt. Michael and William talk in this podcast about leaving The Royal Ballet after 12 years to create their own company and moving from classical to modern dance. They also look back at the pieces that are special to the company, talk about their studio process and share what makes a BalletBoyz dancer. With a long history of dance filmmaking, Michael and William talk about making the stunning Romeo and Juliet, winning the Palm d'Or, and their next dance film project (you'll have to listen to find out which classical ballet they're taking to the screen next!). Listen to the Artistic Directors talk about the choreographers of the two pieces in Deluxe - Shanghai-based dancer and choreographer Xie Xin and Punchdrunk choreographer Maxine Doyle. We're so excited that Deluxe is coming to Sadler's Wells Digital Stage on 27 March 2020 at 7.30pm. In celebration of World Theatre Day, this week we read Last Act by Christopher Pike. Jess remembered it as a cool theatre murder mystery. Now she rants the whole time about ridiculous theatrical decisions, inept and absent adults, and ableism. Come join the fun! Every musical needs a steady hand at the wheel, a leader that can shape and guide the production through rehearsals and tech and make opening night a success. The director of the show must wear many hats. Sometimes calm, sometimes fierce, sometimes both, but ultimately they must gather the people onboard the ship, and be responsible for the journey and destination. But there are also directors that add choreography to their plates and have to successfully do the work of 2 people in a production. Today on March 27th, World Theatre Day, we talk about this process with one of Vancouver's most well known director/choreographers Valerie Easton. We will talk about the challenges and rewards of directing and choreographing musical theatre, and also talk about her next show "Anything Goes" with Royal City Musical Theatre, where she must literally get the cast onboard the ship and successfully to opening night April 8th. So join us because there's no cure like travel from the pit.
On this date in 1977, 583 people died in the deadliest accident in aviation history. Here are some things you may not have known about the Tenerife Airport Disaster. KLM Flight 4805 from Amsterdam, and Pan Am Flight 1736 from Los Angeles via New York, were both traveling to Gran Canaria Airport at Las Palmas in the Canary Islands. A bomb explosion at Gran Canaria Airport forced five large airliners, including the two 747s, to be diverted to the smaller Los Rodeos Airport on the island of Tenerife. As the airport was not equipped to handle so many large aircraft, the taxiway was blocked by parked jets, which forced the use of the runway as a taxiway. During the time the planes were parked, a dense fog had rolled in, greatly reducing visibility. The passengers from the KLM flight were taken to the terminal while the plane was refueled. One passenger who lived on the island decided to go directly home and didn’t re-board the plane. The airport on Gran Canaria reopened and the KLM flight was sent to the end of the runway to wait for clearance to takeoff. The Pan Am plane followed onto the runway after being told to take an earlier exit back onto the taxiway. The fog was so thick that the controller in the tower couldn’t see the runway or the planes on it. The pilots couldn’t see each other either. The airport did not have ground radar at the time, so the only way to keep track of the planes was by voice on radio. English is the international language of aviation. With a Dutch crew on the KLM flight, an American crew on the Pan-Am and Spanish controllers in the tower, chances for miscommunication were rife in the already difficult conditions. The KLM crew mistook the controller’s command to lineup for departure with clearance for takeoff and throttled up. The Pan Am crew was still taxiing down the runway, having missed their intended and poorly marked taxiway. While the KLM 747 was coming up to takeoff speed, the tower instructed the Pan Am crew to report when they were clear of the runway. The KLM flight engineer heard this and asked his captain if the Pan Am was clear. The KLM captain said “Oh, yes,” and continued with the takeoff. The Pan Am crew suddenly saw the KLM landing lights approaching at takeoff speed, and turned hard left toward the grass to try to avert a collision. The KLM crew saw the Pan Am at about the same time and pulled up hard in an effort to climb over the Pan Am. This resulted in the KLM dragging its tail for 72 feet. The nose gear of the KLM cleared the Pan Am, but the engines, lower fuselage and the main landing gear tore through the Pan Am jet almost directly above the wing. The KLM jet remained airborne momentarily, but stalled, rolled sharply and hit the ground about 500 feet past the collision. Its full load of fuel caught fire immediately. Both planes were destroyed. All 234 passengers and 14 crew members on the KLM flight died, as did 326 passengers and nine crew members on the Pan Am jet. 54 passengers and seven crew from the Pan Am flight survived, including the the flight deck crew. Investigators determined that the main cause of the collision was the KLM taking off without clearance. Other major factors included the weather and radio interference, while the use of non-standard language, the Pan Am jet missing the intended exit, and the overcrowding of the airport were contributing, but not critical factors. As a result of the accident, several changes were made to international airline regulations. Flight crews are now required to read back instructions from the controllers, rather than just acknowledging them. The words “take off” are only used after clearance has been given, “departure” is used before clearance. Cockpit procedures were also changed to allow the flight deck crew to raise concerns in the event of a misunderstanding. The Spanish government also installed ground radar at the airport after the collision. The Pan Am 747 involved in the collision was historic in its own right. It took the first commercial flight by a 747 on January 22, 1970. It was also the first 747 to be hijacked, when a flight from New York to Puerto Rico was forced to land in Cuba. Our question: What type of animal are the Canary Islands named after? Today is International Whiskey Day, World Theatre Day, and Armed Forces Day in Myanmar. It’s unofficially Quirky Country Music Song Titles Day, National Paella Day, and National Joe Day. It’s the birthday of musician Sarah Vaughan, who was born in 1924; filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, who is 54; and singer Mariah Carey, who is 47. Because we’ve recently featured 1977, we’ll spin the wheel to pick a year at random. This week in 1969, the top song in the U.S. was “Dizzy” by Tommy Roe. The No. 1 movie was “Charro!,” while the novel “Portnoy’s Complaint” by Philip Roth topped the New York Times Bestsellers list. Weekly question: When did Pan Am go out of business? I am Lindsay Price, resident playwright for Theatrefolk. Hello, I hope you're well. Thanks for listening. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas... I love Christmas songs and Christmas carols. I just think they're filled with a lot of joy, right? Although I cannot imagine having to work in a mall or in a store that starts playing carols at the end of November, it would be sort of like an assault I think if you had to listen to them day after day after day. It's like, “No please don't make me go to work, please don't make me and listen to 'Joy to the World' again!” Ahhhh. When you only have to listen to it at your leisure I think it's lovely. I think it's a lovely sentiment and I think it's a lovely song – I mean who doesn't want joy to the world? I want joy. I think joy is an awesome word. I love words that sort of sound like they are. Like joy. I think holiday is another word that's like that. It sounds like it is. Because who does not love a holiday? I love a holiday. Ok I'm all giddy now. I gotta go find me some eggnog and you're going to listen to my conversation with Teacher Nick Cusamano – we're talking about an awesome project for your drama class, that's right your drama class, that is happening right now. The World Theatre Video Project. Go Nick! Lindsay: Okay. Hello everybody! So, today on the podcast, we are talking about a specific project and the reason that I want to talk about this project is because it is something that every Drama class can do, it is something that every Drama club can do. Teachers, you know, grab your students and pull them together and get them involved with the World Theatre Video project at WorldTheatreVideo.com. I have teacher Nick Cusomano on the podcast. He is the, you created this, right? This is your deal. Nick: Yes, it's something that I was inspired by a tweet. One of my first Twitter followers was Karla O. She is the creator of the Drama Teachers Network. It's a WordPress blog. And, she was one of my first Twitter followers and we got to know each other on Twitter and then there, other friends of mine – Courtney, Elrond, and then Mohamed El-Ashiri – the four of us kind of, I think Karla posted out, “March 27's going to be World Theatre Day,” and I'm like, “We should do a video with two weeks,” and another two weeks wasn't enough time. Lindsay: Hey, you know what? When you've got two weeks, that's what you use, right? Nick: Yeah. So, I thought, “Well, let's record students doing All The World's A Stage from As You Like It.” Lindsay: Yeah. Nick: And so, we were able to get the footage together so we had two schools from the states along with another school, Mel Agar who teaches in Illinois, she sent in her video and then Courtney's students and then Mohamed's students and then Karla's students. And then, I edited that in together, all together as a video, and then we posted it. I world premiered it at the Google in Education Summit in Chicago on the 27th because that's where I was on that day and that was my Google demo slam and just had a great time connecting those students together. And, from there, right about that time I found out I was accepted to the Google Teacher Academy. Lindsay: Now, what is that exactly? Nick: About two to three times a year, it's kind of a competition.
Recently, I was invited by Kulraaj Anand of EBC Radio to initiate a drama club for the radio. Since my childhood days, I was always fascinated by radio drama. Growing up in a small town, we didn’t have much of … Continue reading →
