Are we as pastors putting the wrong emphasis on a different type of leadership than what we see in the Bible? Pastors Banning Liebscher and Phil Manginelli sit down with Tim Hughes, Senior Pastor of Gas Street Church & Founder of Worship Central, to discuss the importance of understanding how the Scriptures define leadership, and how pastors are actually called to be shepherds, not CEOs. There is an increasing pressure in the church to grow things and celebrate size, scale, and impressive events. We need to reevaluate what success is, and be clear on what the call of God is on our lives as leaders. Do you long for more - more than this world offers? Something that's just beyond our reach and beyond what we can see? Perhaps what you are longing for is heaven? In this message James dives into the wonder of the breath of heaven and the intersection of our lives today. * The song we sing at the end (not recorded in the podcast) is O Lord We Seek Your Face from Worship Central (https://youtu.be/i-4Q4kXfv84)
If worship of God is not central, we'll soon be disappointed in any church – regardless of how good it is.
In today's First15 podcast, we're going to spend time reflecting on how worthy God is of our devotion. Life is never better than when God is fully at the center of our lives, and fully at the center of our hearts. May we authentically give God our devotion today as we take time to discover how holy and worthy he is. Our Scripture for today comes from Isaiah 6:3, and today's worship is Devotion by Worship Central. -- Do you know your spiritual gifts? We have created a free test to help you discover your gifts! Spiritual gifts have been given to each of us by God to accomplish those purposes. When you learn where you're gifted, you will begin to see more opportunities to gladly fulfill his calling on your life. Do you find yourself grappling with these thoughts? I don't know my spiritual gifts. I don't know where to serve. I feel led to serve in a different capacity than I am now. How can I know for sure that God has gifted me in certain areas? Is there a particular way I have to use my gifts? Our latest book, What Are My Spiritual Gifts? is the perfect resource to help you better understand your gifts. The book partners with a FREE spiritual gifts test. Developed alongside our partner ministry, Denison Forum, the test and book are meant to open your eyes toward how God may want to use your unique gifts for the building up of the body of Christ. Within the book, you'll learn more about 17 specific gifts and see examples from the Bible of people who lived out each gift. You can take the free test and learn more about the book at supportfirst15.org. https://first15.org/give/ https://first15.org/
Darrell invites us to think about and celebrate a mystery which takes place every time we worship. When we worship here on earth, we are joining a worship service that is already in progress in heaven. By looking at the passages of Isa. 6, and Rev. 4&5, we see the heavenly worship has changed before and after the death and resurrection of Jesus. The changing dynamic of the heavenly worship shapes and empowers our earthly worship. On earth as it is in heaven. Today, when we gather together to worship, we are to cry out: worthy is the Lamb, who sits in the middle of the One who sits on the throne. I’m reading “Preaching and Preachers” by D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones. In the second chapter he makes the claim that part of preaching’s effectiveness is its unique role as a shared learning experience. He attacks the misguided notion that individual learning can replace corporate learning. Let’s examine this topic today. He writes: “Cannot all you want to be done equally well by reading - reading books and journals? Cannot it be done by television or radio…?” p42 Of course, today we need to add “online, YouTube et cetera”. Undoubtedly there is much of great value in podcasts and other media. I myself listen regularly to sermons by Tim Keller and media put out by Worship Central, The Bible Project and others. However, can this not so much supplement as supplant the need for the local sermon? Lloyd Jones goes on to say: “I suggest that the result [of purely individual learning] is a disappointing one, and I think I can give the reasons for this. The first is that this is a wrong approach because it is too individualistic. The man sits on his own reading his book. That is too purely intellectual in its approach, it is a matter of intellectual interest. Another thing, which I find very difficult to put into words, but which to me is most important is that the man himself is too much in control. What I mean is that if you do not agree with the book you put it down, if you do not like what you are hearing on the television you switch it off. You are an isolated individual and you are in control of the situation. Or, to put it more positively, that whole approach lacks the vital element of the church.” p42 It is his second point which resonates most strongly with me. A podcast or YouTube video gets 20 or 30 seconds in which to engage me. If it does not, or if I do not like its content, I move onto the next piece of media. By contrast, sat in my seat on Sunday, I am, to all intents and purposes, trapped! Hopefully trapped to a good end. Here, I’m not dealing with the quality of the presentation, so much as the challenging nature of the content. There is something uniquely powerful about learning from somebody who has a different personality, different background, different perspective and even a different belief to my own. I don’t have to accept it, but I do have to engage with it. And I do so within the community, rather than as an isolated individual. Wrestling with biblical teaching and spiritual issues in community is a far healthier context in which to do it, then simply in my own head. What I’d like to know today is, “What do you see as the particular value of corporate learning as opposed to individual learning?” Please add your comments on this week’s topic. We learn best when we learn in community. Do you have a question about teaching the Bible? Is it theological, technical, practical? Send me your questions or suggestions. Vamos !

In 2006, Hillsong United released United We Stand – a game-changing worship album that established Hillsong as a force unafraid to diversify, experiment, and otherwise challenge our expectations. 2013 seems to be the year they reinforce that image. Earlier this year, Hillsong United shook things up with the progressive and innovative arrangements of Zion. Now Hillsong Young & Free step into the action with their debut, We Are Young & Free (Live). The latest musical iteration from Hillsong Church have produced one of the more distinct sounds to come out of this local church in recent years. We Are Young & Free could be a game changer. We Are Young & Free is most definitely an anthem album. Party songs like “Alive” “Wake” and “In Sync” perfectly capture the current pop culture scene and offer a God glorifying alternative that this current youth generation has been waiting for.Musically this album is a bullseye: well-produced, thoughtful musicianship, and tasteful additions of EDM (electronic dance music) elements. Worship bands like the David Crowder Band and more recently, the Worship Central movement, have done a great job at incorporating electronic sounds and elements into their music, but never really knocking it out of the park and appealing more to a young adult demographic than to teenagers.Lyrically, all the basics of Christian theology are there; however, true to the Hillsong brand, an emphasis on God’s love and His grace is laced on every track of this album. It would be great if they departed more from the out-of-the-box worship lexicon, but the target audience isn’t likely to complain. And honestly, there could be worse things than giving your youth group something fresh, energetic, relevant. All in all, this is a stand-out disc that nails it for their target youth audience. We Are Young & Free will be a welcome addition to any iPod, pre-youth group music rotation or workout mix. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
