Made when Gray was just 23 years old, it's a semi-autobiographical story that merges a character study of an estranged Russian-Jewish family with elements of the crime genre to arrive at something that pulls from the films of Francis Ford Coppola, Sidney Lumet and Luchino Visconti in equal measure. We begin by discussing the career of James Gray, his undersung filmography, and his reputation as a notoriously great interview subject. Then we explore the world of 'Little Odessa', its melodramatic flourishes, stunning camerawork, and deliberate tone and pacing. Finally, we look forward to what might be next for Gray as a filmmaker, having last released the film 'Armageddon Time' which functions as a compelling bookend to the director's three decades in filmmaking.Read Eamon's recent piece on 'The Battle of Algiers' and its relation to Palestinian resistance for The Hampton InstituteFollow Eamon Tracy on Twitter....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish.
*Who do the green roads and wide open spaces of Albion belong to? *This episode is a story is about a collision of two cultures - the counterculture of the twin tribes of urban free party ravers and new age travellers - and the mainstream culture of landowners, the legal authorities, English Heritage and right-wing politicians. *In the first of a series on '80s and '90s counterculture, Aaron Trinder, director of the documentary 'Free Party: A Folk History' came to the Bureau to tell how that collision played out in the years between 1985 and 1992 when extra-ordinary free festivals and parties built on youthful passion, music, community, dancing, the desire to connect with the ancient landcape - and drugs - were violently suppressed. *We hear of the brutal police tactics at 'The Battle of the Beanfield' and at Britiain's largest ever free rave at Castle Morton; how legislation has curtailed the culture of the travellers, the use of common land and ancient rights of access, and we note that whilst free festivals have been crushed, commercial festivals have become an essential part of the the mainstream culture, the entertainment industry and the economy. *Upcoming: Mark Angelo Harrison on Spiral Tribe More on Aaron's film 'Free Party a Folk History' #festivals #counterculture #freefestivals #spiraltribe #squatparty #travellers #newagetravellers #battleofthebeanfield #hippie #castlemorton #techno #drugs #lsd #soundsystem #raveculture #raves #StonehengeFreeFestival #stonehenge

The World of Eora is a news/lore podcast about Obsidian Entertainment's original fantasy world, Eora, as seen in the Pillars of Eternity series, and their upcoming game: Avowed. These bonus episodes come every off-week to offer bite-sized episodes of lore, usually to supplement the previous week's full episode. Today we discuss 'The Battle of Nakaro Atoll', which was *the* notable conflict between the Wahiki tribes of the Huana peoples (those native to the Deadfire Archipelago), and the foreign body of Rauatiains known as 'the Royal Deadfire Company'. If you're new to any of this that was probably a lot of information you didn't understand. The episode is only 10 minutes, so perhaps by listening it'll help illuminate some of that for you xD worldofeora@gmail.com @worldofeora

Welcome to the first video podcast of Review It Yourself, 'Visit It Yourself Episode 1: The Battle of the Standard (1138) At this position 884 years ago, a unique clash between forces from the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of Scotland was about to begin: A battle which come to be known as 'The Battle of The Standard'. But what was the reason for this imminent encounter? First a little background, the United Kingdom of today did not exist in the Twelfth Century. A United Kingdom of Scotland had emerged in the Tenth Century and it's Kings were very eager to exploit the power vacuum in the Northern area of The Kingdom of England. Henry the First of England ruled from 1100, until his death in 1135. He died after eating an excessive number of 'lampreys' (tiny eels). He had promised the crown to his daughter Matilda (one of his 28 children), after his son died when he drowned during the sinking of the Royal Boat The White Ship, in the English Channel. Despite making the English Lords swear allegiance to Matilda as his heir apparent, after his death the Lords disliked both the idea of a female Queen and Matilda's personality and went back on their promise. Matilda was brave, strong and knew how to fight, but whilst she was attempting to rally support for her claim to the English Throne, her cousin Stephen had himself crowned behind her back. This caused The First Civil War of England, known as "The Anarchy". How did the Scottish become involved? By the Twelfth Century, the demarcation line, or boundary, between England and Scotland was far from clear-cut. Often pre-occupied with France, England's Norman Kings decided to build castles to protect the North. The formation of these castles was not meant to prevent invasion as this was not feasible, their purpose was to buy time until relief arrived from the South. These castles would be supported once the better-equipped reinforcements from the South of England arrived. The Scottish, lacking any besieging resources usually withdrew. This meant that that face-to-face battles across open countryside between England and Scotland were not expected. The uniqueness of the battle is that in a time of skirmishes and sieges, this pitched battle stands out. Horsemen got off their steeds and fought on foot. Alfred Burne said of the battle, "there is probably no battle fought in England, of equal importance, that has so little controversy attached to it". The Scottish King in 1135 was King David the First. Whilst King Stephen fought to secure his claim, King David took the opportunity to invade Northern England and secure more territory, under the guise of appearing in England on behalf of his niece Matilda's aid. David justified his invasion by claiming that the King was a usurper who should not be on the throne. As was the tradition with English Kings, Stephen had left Yorkshire to be defended by the commons and the Barons, as the South and West of England had erupted into rebellion. The crown also focused upon France. Upon hearing of the Scottish invasion, Lieutenant of the North, Thurstan Archbishop of York, described as 'a man of action', preached a Holy War against the 'savage invaders', despite being too old to participate in the actual battle. Yorkshire men looked upon the challenge as a crusade against 'savages' and followed the banners of St. Cuthbert of Durham, St. Wilfrid of Ripon, St. John of Beverley and St. Peter of York. A major clash of forces now appeared inevitable... Thanks for listening!

Hearts of Oak have watched Paul Golding and Britain First from afar for years and after their result at the Wakefield by election I asked Paul to come and talk to us. I had no idea the lengths the state had gone to silence Paul and Britain First and in this interview, you will hear what has happened first hand. As a registered political party, Britain First should receive fair coverage during any election but yet their message, which rings true to any free minded conservative, is silenced by the establishment, the media and police. It's time for every member of the public to hear what Britain First are about so they can make up their own minds and decide without interference whether they deserve an X beside their name in any future election. A Choice of Anglo-Saxon Verse contains the Old English texts of all the major short poems, such as 'The Battle of Maldon', 'The Dream of the Rood', 'The Wanderer', and 'The Seafarer', as well as a generous representation of the many important fragments, riddles and gnomic verses that survive from the seventh to the twelfth centuries, with facing-page verse translations. These poems are the wellspring of the English poetic tradition, and this anthology provides a unique window into the mind and culture of the Anglo-Saxons.

On our latest episode of Bingeworthy, co-hosts Mike DeAngelo & Rodrigo Perez dig into Showtime's new anthology series, "Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber," which tells the story of one of Silicon Valley's most successful and most destructive unicorns, Uber. The season pivots on Travis Kalanick (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), Uber's hard-charging CEO who was ultimately ousted in a boardroom coup, and his sometimes tumultuous relationship with his mentor Bill Gurley (Kyle Chandler), the plainspoken, brilliant Texan venture capitalist who bets his sterling reputation on Uber's success – and then has to live with the consequences. After the initial intro and discussion of the series, writer/showrunners Brian Koppelman, David Levien, and Executive Producer Beth Schacter (BILLIONS) stop by to discuss the show and why these stories, like Travis Kalanick of Uber, keep popping up out of Silicon Valley. "All of this comes from Steve Jobs," Koppelman says and Jobs legacy really looms large over all these tech stories. Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the events of 21st October 1805, in which the British fleet led by Nelson destroyed a combined Franco-Spanish fleet in the Atlantic off the coast of Spain. Nelson's death that day was deeply mourned in Britain, and his example proved influential, and the battle was to help sever ties between Spain and its American empire. In France meanwhile, even before Nelson's body was interred at St Paul's, the setback at Trafalgar was overshadowed by Napoleon's decisive victory over Russia and Austria at Austerlitz, though Napoleon's search for his lost naval strength was to shape his plans for further conquests. Robert Graves' White Goddess is one of the most popular books ever written on modern Celtic mysticism, but as well as entrancing countless modern readers it has also enraged many Celtic scholars. Perhaps one of its greatest successes was introducing Kat Godeu ('The Battle of the Trees') to an English audience. Few had ever heard of this obscure medieval Welsh poem from the 14th century Book of Taliesin. But Graves' version has done little to clarify what the poem actually means. In this podcast I talk through the main problems with Graves' version and suggest another way of understanding this ambiguous Welsh text.

The release of Edgar Wright's new film 'The Last Night in Soho', where the main character travels back to 1966, prompts Matthew to look back at the film music of that year. It was the time of 'The Good, the Bad and the Ugly', 'One Million Years BC', 'A Man for All Seasons', 'Born Free' and 'The Battle of Algiers'. The programme features muisc from these, plus 'Georgy Girl', 'The Blue Max', 'Is Paris Burning?', 'Dracula - Prince of Darkness', 'Fahrenheit 451' and music from Steven Price's new score for 'Last Night In Soho'.
So how's your prayer life? It's not meant to be a personal question, yet this is a question that needs to be asked--but only you can answer it. If we are honest, most of us could and should pray more than we do, but why do many never make the time? The first thing that one needs to understand about prayer is that it is a battle--before, during, and after. #firstprinciples #prayeressentials #thebattle
This week Finn & Uther (in separate rooms for the first time) watched 'The Battle of Algiers' (1966), Pontecorvo's brilliantly humane and incisively political episodic portrait of urban guerilla warfare. With that, they watched 'Red Dawn' (2012), which is basically the same as 'Battle of Algiers' just without the incisive, humane or brilliant parts. Ryan and Jamie are joined by Solomon Harrison to describe the historical farce that was the 1797 battle of Fishguard in Wales between British and invading French forces. They converse over Colonel William Tate, Napoleon Bonaparte and Shipwrecked Portuguese Wine.
In this extended special, I speak to John Gill, author of 'The Battle of Znaim: Napoleon, The Habsburgs and the end of the War of 1809', about the significance of this forgotten battle, and what actually happened. Billie Jean King won 39 Grand Slams and a total of 20 Wimbledon titles and is regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time. Born in California in 1943, she was the eldest daughter of Bill and Betty Moffitt. She discovered tennis at the age of ten: at 15 she won in her age bracket at the Southern California championships, and in 1961, she won the women's doubles at Wimbledon with Karen Hantze, the youngest pair to achieve such a victory. In 1968, when professional competitors were admitted to Grand Slam tournaments, she won Wimbledon for the third time and was paid just £750 while Rod Laver, the Men's champion, took home £2,000. So began her campaign for gender equality, which involved boycotting tournaments and setting up their own professional women's circuit. In 1973, then aged 29, she beat the 55-year-old former tennis champion Bobby Riggs in a match which became known as 'The Battle of the Sexes': it remains the most-watched tennis match ever. That year the US Open awarded the same financial reward to men and women and in 2007 Wimbledon followed suit. Billie Jean also founded the Women's Tennis Association and the Women's Sports Foundation in the 1970s.She married her husband, Larry, in 1965 but by the late 1960s, she had realised that she was gay. She was outed by a former lover who sued her for palimony in 1981, and although she won the case, she lost almost all her commercial endorsements. She has been with her partner, Ilana Kloss, for nearly 40 years and retired from singles matches in 1983 and doubles in 1990. She was awarded the Medal of Freedom by President Obama in 2009 and has continued to be an ambassador for her sport and for gender equality.Presenter: Kirsty Young Producer: Cathy Drysdale
