Another day, another deal. Keeping up with the flurry of acquisitions, IPOs, SPACs and venture capital these days is no easy task. In fact, IPO dollar volume for 2021 has already reached $171 billion, surpassing the record totals of last year. Same goes for mergers and acquisitions, with record levels of deal activity tracked for 2021. The money is certainly flowing. Washington state now boasts 11 "unicorns" — privately held companies boasting valuations of $1 billion or more. Many of them — such as Highspot, Zenoti and Outreach  —  have raised venture capital rounds of $150 million or more in the past six months. And each day here at GeekWire we're updating our funding list — not blinking an eye when a company announces $30 million, $40 million or $50 million in new funding. Even more, we've tracked 32 IPOs, SPACs and acquisitions involving Pacific Northwest companies so far this year, including blockbusters like Okta's $6.5 billion purchase of authentication ID startup Auth0 and Twilio's $850 million acquisition of business texting startup Zipwhip. (See full list of deals here). To help put the wild market in perspective, we're joined this week on the GeekWire podcast by Ben Gilbert, a co-founder at Seattle venture capital firm Pioneer Square Labs and the co-host of the Acquired podcast, an in-depth show that discusses the ins and outs of acquisitions and recently ranked as the number one tech show on Apple Podcasts. Cloud-communications firm, Twilio Inc, plans to buy a toll-free messaging provider, Zip-whip, for about $850 million in cash and stock. Zip-whip, which provides a platform for businesses to use their landline or toll-free numbers to send text messages to customers, will become part of Twilio's messaging business unit once the deal closes. The deal is expected to modestly add to Twilio's gross margin and revenue, according to the company. Merge, a start-up that provides an integration platform for product development has raised $4.5 million in a seed round funding led by New Enterprise Associates. Launched in 2020, Merge aspires to provide a unified API for B2B to integrate seamlessly, which explains their up-front investment in their product. They plan to expand into other areas, likely CRM, as per reports. The French Government has stated that Google, and Microsoft's cloud technologies, can be utilized to store France's sensitive data, securely. With the newly added multi-scan report functionality, users can automatically scan an entire website or application and collect all of the information into a single Excel spreadsheet. It is vital to make internet services accessible to as many people as possible, given how the epidemic has forced businesses, to embrace digital transformation.

At Alloy, we use MindBody as our CRM, we took advantage of the coaching they offer, to learn more about it then simplified and customized it for our model. We closed off all the options that didn’t relate to our model. The reason we decided to work with MindBody is that their customer interface is excellent. This is very important as our clients can schedule and maneuver with ease. For the backend, as with any other CRM, you have to invest time and money to figure out how it works. One guiding principle for picking software to work with is simplicity and that the software should enhance human engagement not eliminate it. A personal conversation beats an automated message all the time. Besides lead management, we use Mind Body for communication, billing, and scheduling, which it does well. For our franchisees, we have a backend dashboard where we see their high-level metrics. Zipwhip is an SMS and MMS texting provider that has seen a 280-percent message growth over the past year. To support this growth and effectively deal with aging on-premises infrastructure, Zipwhip required a drastic migration to the cloud. Come learn how three engineers redesigned Zipwhip's infrastructure over nine months and began leveraging AWS services, including Amazon EKS and Nitro-based Amazon EC2 instances. Hear how they used F5 Network's BIG-IP Virtual Edition (VE) and NGINX (Kubernetes ingress controllers) to optimize application performance, visibility, and security throughout this migration. Finally, learn how with AWS, they increased performance, scalability, and resiliency while optimizing costs over traditional infrastructure. This presentation is brought to you by F5 Networks, an APN Partner.

Business texting is a dynamic and growing field. To keep pace with the new technology and high adoption rates of texting, CTIA (Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association) updated their Messaging Principles and Best Practices. These serve as industry guidelines, and now stress the importance of opt-in consent to protect consumers and the text-messaging platform from fraud and spam.  Some questions we'll answer today: What’s the difference between A2P and P2P messaging?   Why do the three types of text messages require different levels of opt-in consent?  And how do any of these best practices help prevent fraud and spam from polluting Texting for Business?  Tune in each month for the latest episodes of Zipcast.
