Let's be honest, power is easy to make these days. Anyone with a modest budget can build a 1000hp dyno queen, but what about high-output engines that are expected to last for more than just a few full-power dyno pulls?Use ‘PODCAST75' for $75 off your first HPA course here: https://hpcdmy.co/hpa-tuned-inMixing a unique roots style blower (aka supercharger) with 8-into-1 headers for wow factor, Mitch Pullen of Pullen Spec Engines hasn't glossed over the essential parts to ensure this LS-based build will last. With 450hp to 1000hp on tap via an EMtron ECU control strategy incorporating a drive-by-wire (DBW) throttle body, this V8 swapped Fox Boy Mustang, an exciting project we couldn't resist chatting about.Use ‘PODCAST75' for $75 off your first HPA course here: https://hpcdmy.co/hpa-tuned-inSam Hiu Bin of CWI Performance runs us through this 7.3L V8 Mustang build that has taken the Ford 'Godzilla' V8, never designed for race cars, and put it in a race car anyway. Not only that, but the team has also added a ProCharger centrifugal supercharger to ramp up the output in a compact package. It is as compact as a 7.3L V8 shoehorned into a Fox Body Mustang can be, anyway. The biggest physical challenge with the Ford Godzilla for a swap like this is the height, but teamed with Indy Power Products, the oil pump has been moved so that a smaller wet sump setup can be used, allowing the engine to be mounted lower in the chassis. The CWI Performance 3-piece billet intake manifold also helps reduce the height at the top of the engine and incorporates a 1400hp capable C&R / PWR intercooler core to further improve packaging options as well as options to fit a 105mm or smaller LS throttle body or a Ford Coyote/Godzilla flavour too.Boost-wise, the car produces 450whp at around 2pi, with it only taking 15psi to get it over 1000whp and the EMtron package also takes care of exhaust gas temperature (EGT) monitoring for both tuning and engine health functions. Even using an E90 ethanol blend, the car does see some knock/detonation, partly thanks to its 10.5:1 compression ratio, but the dual bank knock control takes care of this when the temperatures get high enough for it to start occurring.

Between decibels and milliwatts ...

Foundations of Amateur Radio

Foundations of Amateur Radio Between decibels and milliwatts ... As you might recall, I've been working towards using a cheap $20 RTL-SDR dongle to measure the second and third harmonic of a handheld radio in an attempt to discover how realistic that is as a solution when compared to using professional equipment like a Hewlett Packard 8920A RF Communications Test Set. I spent quite some time discussing how to protect the receiver against the transmitter output and described a methodology to calculate just how much attenuation might be needed and what level of power handling. With that information in-hand, for reference, I used two 30 dB attenuators, one capable of handling 10 Watts and one capable of handling 2 Watts. In case you're wondering, it's not the dummy load with variable attenuation that I was discussing recently. I ended up using a simple command-line tool, rtl-power, something which I've discussed before. You can use it to measure power output between a set of frequencies. In my case I measured for 5 seconds each, at the base frequency on the 2m band, on the second and on the third harmonic and to be precise, I measured 100 kHz around the frequencies we're looking at. This generated a chunk of data, specifically I created just over a thousand power readings every second for 15 seconds. I then put those numbers into a spreadsheet, averaged these and then charted the result. The outcome was a chart with three lines, one for each test frequency range. As you'd expect, the line for the 2m frequency range showed a lovely peak at the centre frequency, similarly, there was a peak for the other two related frequencies. The measurement data showed that the power measurement for 146.5 MHz was nearly 7 dB, for 293 MHz it was -44 dB and for 439.5 MHz it was -31 dB. If you've been paying attention, you'll notice that I used dB, not dBm or dBW in those numbers, more on that shortly. From a measurement perspective we learnt that the second harmonic is 51 dB below the primary power output and the third harmonic was about 38 dB below the primary power output. First observation to make is that these numbers are less than shown on the HP Test Set where those numbers were 60 dB and 62 dB respectively. Second observation, potentially more significant, is that pesky dB thing I skipped over earlier. If you recall, when someone says dB, they're referring to a ratio of something. When they refer to dBm, they're referring to a ratio in relation to 1 milliwatt. This means that when I say that the power reading was 7 dB, I'm saying that it's a ratio in relation to something, but I haven't specified the relationship. As I said, that's on purpose. Let me explain. When you use an RTL-SDR dongle to read power levels, you're essentially reading numbers from a chip that is converting voltages to numbers. In this case the chip is an Analog to Digital Converter or an ADC. At no point has any one defined what the number 128 means. It could mean 1 Volt, or it could mean 1 mV, or 14.532 mV, or something completely different. In other words, we don't actually know the absolute value that we're measuring. We can only compare values. In this case we can say that when we're measuring on the 2m band we get a range of numbers that represent the voltage measured along those frequencies. When we then measure around the second harmonic, we're doing the same thing, possibly even using the same scale, so we know that if we get 128 back both times we might assume the voltage is the same in both cases, we just don't actually know how much the voltage is. We could say that there's no difference between the two, or 0 dB, but we cannot say how high or low the voltage is. This is another way of describing something I've discussed before, calibration. So, if I had a tool that could output a specific, known RF power level, and fed that into the receiver and measured, I could determine the relationship between my particular receiver and that particular power level. I could then measure at all three frequencies and determine if the numbers were actually the same for these three frequencies, which is what I've been assuming, but we don't actually know for sure right now. So, at this point we need a known RF signal generator. The list of tools is growing. I've already used a NanoVNA to calibrate my attenuators and I've used a HP RF Communications Test Set to compare notes with. At this point you might realise that we're not yet able to make any specific observations about using a dongle to make harmonic measurements, but you can make pretty pictures... There's a good chance that you're becoming frustrated with this process, but I'd like to point out that at the beginning of this journey I can tell you that I had no idea what the outcome might be and obviously, that's the nature of experimentation. If you have some ideas on how to explore further, feel free to get in touch. I'm Onno VK6FLAB

Welcome to another exciting episode of the Doctors Building Wealth podcast! Join Leti and Kenji as they share their journey from Lake Como in Italy, where they discuss the topic of going international and buying an Italian villa. Their goal has always been to create a life where they could own an Italian villa to use as a gathering place for friends and family, and this dream is now becoming a reality. They explore the various reasons why some investors choose to buy rental properties in foreign countries, such as obtaining a golden visa for citizenship or residency, leveraging geographic arbitrage in affordable markets, benefiting from currency arbitrage, and diversifying their real estate portfolios across different countries. Leti shares her experience of overcoming initial challenges in securing a loan for the Italian property and explains a unique syndication structure they devised to bring their dream closer to reality. This innovative structure allows passive investors to invest in the property and receive a return or stay in the villa for a certain period each year, while Leti and Kenji still have ample time to rent out the property as a short-term rental and make it a profitable venture. They also highlight the potential tax benefits, such as accelerated depreciation, for foreign properties. The episode concludes with an inspiring message for real estate investors to explore various possibilities in international property investments and make their dreams of owning properties in different countries a reality. Tune in to discover how you can embrace international real estate investments and create a life of travel and multiple rental properties around the world. Don't miss this opportunity to learn from Leti and Kenji's experience and be inspired to take your real estate investment journey to the next level! __________________________________________________________ Have someone who you think should be featured in a future episode? In this week's podcast, we interview Dr. Gregory Hanson. He is a radiologist by training who founded flipMD, a physician-focused freelancing platform. What is truly remarkable about his story is that he started this company with his wife during residency and sold it to GoodRx in a little less than two years! Not only that, he did this with very little venture funding and he also managed the entire M&A (mergers and acquisitions) process himself without a broker. In this episode, we also delve briefly into his real estate journey. Like so many others in our community, he invested in short-term rentals, not only for the cashflow but also for the tax advantages. __________________________________________________________ Have someone who you think should be featured in a future episode? This week's guest is Dr. Latifat Akintade.  She is a practicing Gastroenterologist with an emphasis in Inflammatory bowel diseases. Latifat is also the founder of MoneyFitMD, a money coaching platform for women physicians and author of Done with Broke.  Latifat knew nothing about money, investment or real estate until about 5 years ago when she realized that she was on the fast track to burn out.  In the last 5 years, she and her husband have achieved financial independence through diversifying their sources of incomes. They started actively investing in 2019 after completing the Zero to Freedom course with Leti and Kenji. They currently own 11 doors in California and Washington state. With the right tools, she believes every woman physician can create their own rich life. Real estate can be a key part of that vehicle. She also believes that money is a tool for change and critical in our conversation of helping disempowered women physicians become empowered money badasses. When physicians are financially independent, they will practice medicine because they want to and not because they have to. When she is not coaching physicians or treating GI illnesses, she enjoys traveling with her family, spending time in her hammock, cooking and kicking it with her girlfriends.   Her mantras in life are “Everything is possible. You simply have to choose” and “heaven is closer by the ocean”. Latifat will be speaking at our FREE virtual summit on August 1st.  Register now at semiretiredmd.com/ffvs23 to grab your FREE ticket! __________________________________________________________ Have someone who you think should be featured in a future episode? Planning for Success

Would you consider yourself a planner? Many, like Kenji, don't see themselves as planners. In fact, research has shown that people with Kenji's personality type actually struggle with planning. The reason is, his personality is a go, go, go-type personality. He's constantly getting sh*t done, so stopping to plan feels like waste of time. However, over the last 3-6 months, this has all changed. Now, instead of labeling himself "I'm not a planner," he now loves to plan and can't imagine beginning his day without a plan. Why the dramatic shift? He reached a threshold. A threshold is the point at which you get fed up with your current situation and you decide to make a change. So how did he make the shift? First thing is, he changed his identity. See, if you label yourself "I'm not a planner," then you will do whatever it takes to maintain that identity. Once you change your identity to "I'm a planner," things start to change. All of a sudden, you no longer fiercely hold onto the old identity. Second, he made time for it each day. It is actually built into his daily schedule. Third, he started to see positive results from planning, which created a positive reinforcement loop. See, when you plan effectively, you get better results. This is one of the keys to planning. It's not about getting more sh*t done. It's about focusing on the things you value the most. For example, you might value having your kids see you as a fun and loving dad. If that's the outcome you're seeking, then you have to plan time to create those fun and loving moments with your kids. This gives each to-do on your list more meaning. It's not something you check off. Instead, each to-do is important and meaningful to you, so when you accomplish it, you are achieving the results you're seeking. Now this episode isn't just about Kenji's dramatic shift, Leti also made significant changes to how she plans. She now organizes her planning around the different roles she plays in life for example: mother, wife, CEO, and community. So if you want better results in your life, consider planning for success! The Nissan parts list also includes the uprights, with 300ZX ones used to help try and reign in custom work and give more bolt in part options, and of course being something that physically worked with the package. Also touched on are some of the boost control strategies employed, but Brett is pretty straight up that his knowledge is more focused on being behind the wheel than behind the laptop, and with 20+ years of it his no doubt his feedback goes a long way to help dial things in for race day.You can catch Brett and this build racing in the ACL Race Series, and you can catch Brett racing other cars like the previous title winning Elusive Racing DC2 Integra at the World Time Attack Challenge as well as other cars in Global Time Attack and Pikes Peak Hill Climb events.

Have you ever heard yourself say, "I just don't have enough time to do [fill in the blank]. This is one of the most common excuses we hear from prospective students of our Zero to Freedom and Accelerating Wealth courses. They say, for example, "it's not a good time, maybe in 6 months." We understand that life happens and some people legitimately have more important things going on in their lives that they have to prioritize. But our guess is that it's the minority. Most people thinking about getting into real estate investing, DO have the time. Where does this come from? Oftentimes, it's rooted in fear. It's an excuse that they make up in their minds to help them cope with the fact that they aren't taking action. The reality is, they just aren't making it a priority. Ultimately, we all have the time to handle whatever we make a priority. If a loved one fell ill, you'd find the time to take care of them because their well-being is a priority to you. We are excited to share an exclusive interview with J Scott from our 2022 Fast FIRE to Freedom Summit, which was held in August 2022. J has a wealth of real estate experience and is the author of several books, including Recession-Proof Real Estate Investing and The Book on Estimating Rehab Costs. J and his wife started investing in 2008 and flipped over 400 homes between 2008 and 2016. After years of house flipping, he transitioned to investing in large multifamily properties. This move was prompted by his study of economic cycles. He realized that flipping houses or "transactional real estate" as he called it, wasn't a good investment during a downturn. On the other hand, multifamily investing, more specifically, cashflowing multifamily properties is what he found to be a great asset class to be in during a downturn. This interview is packed with learning pearls and lessons. One of the biggest lessons he learned was not paying attention to taxes early on in his career. One of the benefits for new investors is that you can learn from other people's mistakes! The lesson here is, lower your tax burden as soon as possible so you can grow your money faster with compounding. As you know, here at Semi-Retired MD, we focus a lot on helping doctors and high-income professionals lower their taxes with cashflowing rentals. If you want to learn more, here are two strategies you can use: Real Estate Professional Status and Short-Term Rental Tax Loophole. In this episode, we interview Katrina Ubell and learn about her journey of transitioning from being a full-time physician to becoming a successful entrepreneur. Katrina Ubell is a pediatrician who worked in a private practice for over 10 years. She is now a certified life and weight-loss coach who has successfully helped over 1,300 physicians overcome/solve their weight-loss dilemmas. Growing up, owning a company, or starting a business was never in the picture for her. Katrina doesn't have any business background, but she grew interested in becoming an entrepreneur after catching just a glimpse of it. When she was in medical school, her body weight became an issue for her. Over the course of her training, she kept gaining and losing weight and could not figure out a way to lose the weight and keep it off. As she was approaching the age of 40, she did a life reevaluation. It was then she discovered life coaching and it changed her perspective entirely. It helped her to understand why what she was doing before wasn't working, and what she needed to change moving forward. 2016 was a pivotal year for her. She was able to lose the weight she had been struggling with for years, but still, she wasn't entirely fulfilled. She was feeling trapped in her medical practice and wanted to try something new while assisting her clients in getting results. She attended various webinars and courses where she learned how to run a business. That was her stepping stone in terms of broadening her base of understanding and building out a foundation for herself. It became a snowball effect from there as she felt empowered by helping others reach their weight-loss goals. Everything happened gradually. At first, building a team and learning how to manage and lead people, were not among her priorities. As she ran her business, she started hiring people -- sharing ideas and building things together. Even when she had people helping her out with the technical side of the business, Katrina was still attending courses herself. With first-hand experience, Katrina now teaches her students to trust themselves and their intuition. She strongly believes "it's not always the experts that know everything, you know a lot more than you give yourself credit for”. Though things looked like it was smooth sailing for her, Katrina still had her rough times. There were things that just didn't work out well for her. She says, “Entrepreneurship was amazing and difficult at the same time”. She hired a publicist as she was working on  attracting a literary agent for promotion - to get a book deal. This was towards the end of 2020, and without getting into more detail, Katrina and her team did not do their due diligence on her. She learned a lot from that experience and says, "it's easy to be like, I met this person and they seem great. It's a good idea before you really move forward to check a person out." Success for Katrina means to keep going. She believes it's continuing to persevere through the hard parts. She also continually works on herself like she always has to grow as a business owner and a leader. The impact that she wants to make on other people and on herself is what keeps her motivated and determined. She has the willingness to fight the odds while learning and growing. For Katrina, true wealth is having the finances to live your day-to-day exactly as you want. She believes that you should also find balance. Whatever that balance is, you should allow time to take care of yourself, time to do your work, and time to spend with the people who are most important to you. Why We Created a Short-Term Rental Course

Short-term rentals (STRs), also known as Airbnbs or vacation rentals have become increasingly popular over the last few years. This interest spiked during the COVID pandemic, and despite a recent slow down, interest continues to be strong in the post-COVID era.  We have seen the same trend in our groups. Three years ago, very few in our community were talking about STRs. Now, we see the vast majority in our community planning to add at least one STR to their portfolio. Why the strong interest? One reason is the potential for high cashflow. It's not unusual for a single STR to cashflow $50,000 to $100,000 when you self manage. Short-term rentals also give high-income professionals a way to shelter their income while continuing to work full time. Real estate professional status requires that you spend more time in real estate than your current profession, so it is not an option for many high-income professionals. These are just a few of the many reasons why so many high-income professionals are investing in STRs. While it's easy to focus on the positives, there are downsides to consider. Besides cashflow, there are a number of other reasons why STR's are so popular, which we cover further in this episode. However, we believe the most important reason (and why we created a short-term rental course called Accelerating Wealth) is because we saw a significant demand for them. We noticed that a large number of people were investing in short-term rentals. They were ecstatic about the potential for cashflow and tax savings. However, there are risks involved. We have seen people go out and buy a $1,000,000 short-term rental for the tax benefits, only to find out it doesn't even cashflow. The risk is that unless you conduct an analysis ahead of time, you may incur significant financial losses.  To find out how you can start profitably investing in STR's and mitigate your risk, listen to the episode below!  Have someone who you think should be featured in a future episode? The COVID pandemic was an unprecedented event that posed numerous challenges for real estate investors. One of the biggest challenges for owners was the loss of revenue from non-paying tenants. On top of the that, governments enacted eviction moratorium, which prevented owners from evicting these non-paying tenants. While COVID was unprecedented, these challenges aren't unique. These same challenges can occur during a global recession. So the lessons we learned from COVID are directly applicable to owners as they prepare for a future recession. In this episode, we cover these lessons and how you can use these lessons to help you prepare for an uncertain future! Have someone who you think should be featured in a future episode? In this episode, we go into the logistics of becoming a digital nomad with family. We first became digital nomads in 2017 when we had a 12 month old. We did it again in 2021, this time with three children and a fourth child joining us intermittently. We thought this would be a good episode to record now because we are seeing so many of our Zero to Freedom students getting to the point where they're achieving greater freedoms, both financial and time freedom, as they grow their real estate portfolios. We're also seeing many students enjoy their freedoms sooner because they understand the importance of enjoying the journey, not just focusing on getting to the destination. So you'll see them taking 2 months off at a time to explore the world (and of course checking out real estate along the way) or checking off those bucket list items that they never imagined they would be doing at such a young age. We also wanted to highlight that you don't have to stop investing in real estate while you are abroad. As long as you have everything in place ahead of time to allow you to find, acquire and manage a property long-distance (even from another continent away!). Renting your property to tenants who get their rent subsidized - ideally by the government, but it can be a non-profit or a company. If you've ever seen an ad for a real estate syndication, you might have come across headlines like this one: "Get the benefits of investing in real estate without becoming a landlord!" "This is your last chance to write off taxable income using 100% bonus depreciation!" While these benefits sound amazing, the problem is, many of these headlines are misleading. We're not saying that real estate syndications or the people leading them are bad. In fact, we led a syndication last year when we bought our 160 unit property. It's just that the people selling you on these syndications sometimes are not telling you the whole truth. And it makes sense. Being on the active side of investing is extremely lucrative. Syndicators make a lot of money with your money. So in this episode, we uncover these truths so you have a balanced perspective before investing in a real estate syndication. TRANSCRIPT OF AUDIO From the Cumberland Gap to the Atlantic Ocean, this is Virginia Water Radio for the week of May 25, 2020. MUSIC – ~10 seconds - instrumental That’s part of “DBW,” by The Faux Paws, from a 2018 collection called “The Hurricane EP” because it resulted when plans changed due to Hurricane Florence, which struck the Atlantic coast in September 2018.  That makes the tune a fitting opening for our annual preview of the Atlantic tropical cyclone season.  Have a listen for about 30 seconds to 21 names that we hope will NOT become infamous this summer or fall. GUEST VOICES and INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC - ~26 sec – “Arthur.  Bertha.  Cristobal.  Dolly.  Edouard.  Fay.  Gonzalo.  Hanna.   Isaias.  Josephine.  Kyle.  Laura.  Marco.  Nana.  Omar.  Paulette.  Rene.  Sally.  Teddy.  Vicky.  Wilfred.” You heard the names planned for storms that may occur during the 2020 tropical cyclone season in the Atlantic Basin.  The names were accompanied by “Tropical Tantrum,” by Torrin Hallett.  The Atlantic basin includes the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico, and the Atlantic tropical cyclone season runs officially from June 1 through November 30.  But tropical weather doesn’t always abide by the official dates.  For the past five years in the Atlantic basin, named storms have formed before June 1: Hurricane Alex in mid-January 2016; Tropical Storm Arlene in April 2017; Subtropical Storm Alberto in May 2018; Subtropical Storm Andrea in May 2019; and this year, Tropical Storm Arthur on May 17. Tropical storms and hurricanes are two categories of tropical cyclones, which are rotating storm systems that start in tropical or sub-tropical latitudes.  A tropical cyclone is called a tropical storm—and gets a name—when sustained wind speeds reach 39 miles per hour; at 74 miles per hour, a tropical cyclone is considered a hurricane.  Tropical depressions—with wind speeds below 39 miles per hour—don’t get named if they never reach tropical storm wind speed,* but they can still bring heavy rainfall and flooding.  Hurricane-force storms are called simply tropical cyclones in some parts of the world and called typhoons in other parts. [*Editor's note, not in the audio: A tropical system that never gets above the tropical depression wind-speed level won’t be given a name.  But a lingering tropical depression that previously was at the wind speed of a tropical storm or hurricane will have a name associated with it.]Before a tropical system of any speed or name barges into the Old Dominion, here are some important preparedness steps you can take:Make a written emergency plan, including an evacuation plan;Assemble an emergency kit of food, water, medicines, and supplies, including cleaning and sanitation supplies needed in this year of the coronavirus pandemic;Prepare your home for high winds; andEstablish ways to stay informed, especially if the power goes out.Detailed safety tips for hurricanes and other severe weather are available from the “Safety” link at the National Weather Service Web site, www.weather.gov.  While the Weather Service’s “Hurricane Preparedness Week” for 2020 was May 3-9, right now is still a good time to start getting ready for the next tropical cyclone! Thanks to several Blacksburg, Va., friends for lending their voices to this episode, and thanks to Torrin Hallett for composing “Tropical Tantrum” for Virginia Water Radio in 2017.  Thanks also to Andrew VanNorstrand for permission to use this week’s music by The Faux Paws, and we close with about 20 more seconds of “DBW,” from The Hurricane EP. MUSIC - ~22 sec – instrumental SHIP’S BELL Virginia Water Radio is produced by the Virginia Water Resources Research Center, part of Virginia Tech’s College of Natural Resources and Environment.  For more Virginia water sounds, music, or information, visit us online at virginiawaterradio.org, or call the Water Center at (540) 231-5624.  Thanks to Stewart Scales for his banjo version of Cripple Creek to open and close this show.  In Blacksburg, I’m Alan Raflo, thanking you for listening, and wishing you health, wisdom, and good water. EXTRA INFORMATION On Tropical Cyclone Preparedness The following information is quoted from the National Weather Service’s “Hurricane Preparedness Week 2020” list of tips for each day of a week, online at http://www.weather.gov/wrn/hurricane-preparedness#prepweek. “Day 1 - Determine your risk.Find out today what types of wind and water hazards could happen where you live, and then start preparing how to handle them. Hurricanes are not just a coastal problem.  Their impacts can be felt hundreds of miles inland, and significant impacts can occur without it being a major hurricane. “Day 2 - Develop an evacuation plan. The first thing you need to do is find out if you live in a hurricane evacuation zone.  If you do, now is the time to begin planning where you would go and how you would get there.  You do not need to travel hundreds of miles, but have multiple options.  Your destination could be a friend or relative who doesn’t live in an evacuation zone.  If you live in a well-built home outside the evacuation zone, your safest place may be to remain home.  Be sure to account for your pets in your plan.  As hurricane season approaches, listen to local officials on questions related to how you may need to adjust any evacuation plans based on the latest health and safety guidelines from the CDC [U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] and your local officials. “Day 3 - Assemble disaster supplies. You’re going to need supplies not just to get through the storm but for the potentially lengthy and unpleasant aftermath.  Have enough non-perishable food, water and medicine to last each person in your family a minimum of three days.  Electricity and water could be out for at least that long.  You’ll need extra cash, a battery-powered radio and flashlights.  You may need a portable crank or solar-powered USB charger for your cell phones.  The CDC recommends [that] if you need to go to a public shelter, bring at least two cloth face coverings for each person and, if possible, hand sanitizer.  (Children under two years old and people having trouble breathing should not wear face coverings). “Day 4 – Get an insurance check-up. Call your insurance company or agent and ask for an insurance check-up to make sure you have enough homeowners insurance to repair or even replace your home.  Don’t forget coverage for your car or boat.  Remember, standard homeowners insurance doesn’t cover flooding.  Whether you’re a homeowner or renter, you’ll need a separate policy for it, and it’s available through your company, agent or the National Flood Insurance Program at floodsmart.gov.  Act now as flood insurance requires a 30-day waiting period. “Day 5 - Strengthen your home.If you plan to ride out the storm in your home, make sure it is in good repair and up to local hurricane building code specifications.  Many retrofits are not as costly or time consuming as you may think.  Have the proper plywood, steel or aluminum panels to board up the windows and doors.  Remember, the garage door is the most vulnerable part of the home, so it must be able to withstand the winds.“Day 6 – Help your neighbor. Many Americans rely on their neighbors after a disaster, but there are also many ways you can help your neighbors before a hurricane approaches.  Learn about all the different actions you and your neighbors can take to prepare and recover from the hazards associated with hurricanes.  Start the conversation now...[and] remember you may need to adjust your preparedness plans based on the latest health and safety guidelines from the CDC and your local officials.“Day 7 - Complete a written plan. The time to prepare for a hurricane is before the season begins, when you have the time and are not under pressure.  If you wait until a hurricane is on your doorstep, the odds are that you will be under duress and will make the wrong decisions.  Take the time now to write down your hurricane plan.  Know who issues evacuation orders for your area, determine locations on where you will ride out the storm, and start to get your supplies now.  Being prepared before a hurricane threatens makes you resilient to the hurricane impacts of wind and water.  It will mean the difference between being a hurricane victim or a hurricane survivor.” On Tropical Cyclone Names The following information is quoted from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, “Tropical Cyclone Names,” online at http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutnames.shtml. “Since 1953, Atlantic tropical storms had been named from lists originated by the National Hurricane Center.  They are now maintained and updated through a strict procedure by an international committee of the World Meteorological Organization [online at http://www.wmo.int/pages/prog/www/tcp/]. “[Six lists] are used in rotation and re-cycled every six years, i.e., the 2019 list will be used again in 2025.  The only time that there is a change in the list is if a storm is so deadly or costly that the future use of its name on a different storm would be inappropriate for reasons of sensitivity.  If that occurs, then at an annual meeting by the WMO committee (called primarily to discuss many other issues) the offending name is stricken from the list and another name is selected to replace it.  Several names have been retired since the lists were created.  [More information on the history of naming tropical cyclones and retired names is available online at https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutnames_history.shtml.] “If a storm forms in the off-season, it will take the next name in the list based on the current calendar date.  For example, if a tropical cyclone formed on December 28th, it would take the name from the previous season's list of names.  If a storm formed in February, it would be named from the subsequent season's list of names.  In the event that more than twenty-one named tropical cyclones occur in the Atlantic basin in a season, additional storms will take names from the Greek alphabet.” SOURCES Used for Audio National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), “NASA Provides in-Depth Analysis of Unusual Tropical Storm Alex,” 1/15/16, online at http://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2016/alex-atlantic-ocean.   Hey there word nerds! Today, I’ll be sharing a recap of all the exciting things I discovered at Digital Book World (or DBW) last week. 2017 marks the eighth year of this industry-focused event, with a shift toward solution-focused strategies paired with insightful in-depth programming. This year was also the the first time DBW has run a segment of the conference exclusively for indie authors. While this event is intended for the members of the publishing community—it truly is an industry event—there are a lot of things author can learn from DBW in order to thrive in today’s evolving landscape. And this doesn’t mean you need to be an indie author; even if writers planning to go the traditional route, there were a lot of important takeaways I got from digital book world this year. Three Main Themes at DBW While I heard a lot of fascinating statistics and gained so many new insights into publishing, there were three main themes that rose to the top.   Innovation: Cool new stuff that both publishers and authors are doing to connect with their audience and enhance the reading experience. Efficiency: To succeed in this business, it’s not just about working harder, it’s about working smarter, and this conference was brimming with awesome strategies and cool new tools I can’t wait to try. Sales: Let’s face it, if we want to create a sustainable career as writers, we have to understand sales. This means both knowing what the trends are now, and where the next opportunities might be.   This last piece is extremely important. It’s only when we understand the money piece that we can develop creative new ideas for earning a sustainable living from our writing. If we don’t know what’s going on in the industry around us, then we’re operating in a vacuum. As I go through each of these three themes from DBW, I’m also going to give you a little piece of homework—an assignment with each one—so you can implement these concepts with concrete, actionable steps. Let’s get started! Innovation What cool new stuff is the industry up to? Hands down, one of the places where I saw the most creative thinking was in platforms, and I don’t mean your author platform, but social media and other tech platforms where both authors and publishers are doing cool creative things. Trends include... Audio! By far the biggest buzz at DBW is around audiobooks. Using Facebook ads to build your email list as well as to sell directly. Platforms that are offering unique reading experiences (like Crave) or increasing authors’ reach (like Wattpad). Efficiency How can you work smarter? The two big areas of focus when it comes to efficiency focus creation and promotion. Finding new opportunities for your intellectual property (e.g. branded stories on Wattpad, capitalizing on audio rights, etc.). Agents play a huge part in helping authors make smart choices with their IP. While the query process can be tough, agents are still hungry to discover great talent. “Any given Thursday, you can walk into a bar and hear people singing karaoke who are pretty decent. But as agents, we’re not looking for ‘pretty good,’ we’re looking for someone who can sing at the Met or who can sell out Madison Square Garden.” —Regina Brooks, Lead Agent and President of Serendipity Literary Agency Understanding how to reach out to the media for publicity, and developing a multi-faceted PR approach. Take a “sniper rifle approach” to marketing and promotion, instead of a shotgun. Patience and persistence were common themes, especially at DBW Indie. You need to try different approaches but give them time to build traction (especially with SEO and digital tools). Sales What’s happening in our industry and what does this mean for authors? Perhaps my favorite session was given by Peter Hildick-Smith, Codex Group founder and president. He broke down the sales process into three steps, then talked about different strategies pertaining to each one. These steps are: Discover, conversion, and sourcing.   Discovery: Do readers know the book exists? How can we make potential readers more aware of books? Readers need two or more “exposures” to the book before they want to buy it, and that number goes up if the price of the book is higher. The good news is that the author’s connection to his/her audience can be a big influencer at this stage. Conversion: Now that readers are aware the book exists, do they want to read it? This is where cues like the cover and messaging around the book can make a big difference at this stage. Price and reviews/recommendations can also be a big influencer here. Sourcing: Readers know about the book, they want to read it, but will they buy it? Here is where things vary based on the specific book. Delivering a varied mosaic of information about the book (and where to buy it) from day one improves chances of sales.   About Digital Book World Starting with the only conference designed to address the radically changing commercial publishing environment, Digital Book World has evolved into a year-round platform offering educational and networking resources for consumer publishing professionals and their partners — including agents, booksellers and technology vendors — online and in person. You can keep up with Digital Book World and what they’re up to by following them on Twitter. For more info and show notes: DIYMFA.com/131

What use is an F-call?

What use is an F-call? You've come across the term dB, or Decibel. Likely you've heard of dBi as well. These terms are all related to Decibels, but mean completely different things. A decibel, named after Alexander Graham Bell, is a RELATIVE measure of two different power levels, that is, one power level compared to another power level. 3dB is about twice as much power, 6db is about four times as much, and 10dB is exactly 10 times as much power. This means that you can say that a feedline has 6dB loss, that is, you need to put 20 Watt in at one end to get 5 Watt out at the other. In short, a dB is a ratio between two levels of power, in the feedline case, the power in vs. the power out the other end. In antenna land, you'll have heard dBi as the measure of the amazingness of an antenna. A dBi is a measure of gain of an antenna when compared to an ISOTROPIC source. This is a theoretical reference, that cannot actually exist in nature, but at least it's always the same, which allows you to compare two antennas to each other when their gain is both expressed in dBi. You might also come across a dBd, or antenna gain when compared with a dipole. A dipole in itself can be compared to an Isotrope. Its gain is 2.41 dBi or 0dBd. Which incidentally goes to why many antenna manufactureres play silly games with dBi and dBd. An antenna described as 24 dB should send you back to the manufacturer to ask them, 24 compared to what? If it's 24 dBi, it's compared to an isotrope, if it's 24 dBd, it's compared to a dipole. This means that there could be a 4.81 dB difference between two incorrectly named "24 dB" antennas. There's more than this, think about dBW, dBV, dBu, dBmV, dBA, dBZ and many, many more. The thing to take away is that a dB is a relative term. One compared to another. If only one's specified, you don't nessicarily know compared to what? dBi references it to an Isotrope and dBd references it to a dipole. I'm Onno VK6FLAB
