Back in 2020 I got to talk to Neelam, a TEDx Speaker and also the founder of Cysters- a charity focused on combating some of the misconceptions around reproductive health and is one of the only South Asian led charities in the UK who focuses on creating a safe space for women of colour who suffer from reproductive health issues. In the episode Neelam shares her story of being diagnosed with PCOS, what are the common symptoms & misconceptions around PCOS, the idea behind founding Cysters and why women's health is such a big taboo in South Asian culture. For those who don't know, PCOS stands for Polycystic ovary syndrome which affects the woman's ovaries, caused by an imbalance of reproductive hormones and sometimes cysts on the ovaries. Statistics show that 1 in every 10 women in the UK suffer from PCOS and worldwide it's around 6-10% so it's very common. Identity is a big thing for all of us and navigating the different parts of our identities can be really tough at times. In this episode Sunny shares his story of coming out as queer, allyship and what it means to him being homosexual when you are South Asian. IT'S SEASON 3 TIME! This is the first time that I've taken my mic out in six months but it's finally time to release the rest of the episodes I recorded in 2020 and early 2021. In all honesty, this season was supposed to come out last year, but Indian timing so here we are. So what's in store for season 3… In a few words, honest, educational and relatable conversations. I think the themes for this season are a bit more hard hitting as we go deeper into people's stories around topics not many South Asian's talk about publicly. Writing for Hollywood and creating stories sounds like such a dream job. Prathi does just that, she is an actress and screenwriter living in LA. She's worked on latest season of Titans, on HBOMAX as well as writing Plan B which released on Hulu earlier this year. Prathi also wrote and starred in Bollyweird, an indie webseries that features a multi-cultural cast, a bisexual love triangle, and was shot entirely in quarantine. Available on YouTube (linked it down below) We talk about her journey into screenwriting, South Asian representation and Indian house guest culture because that in itself a shared experience many of us face. We also get into the deeper topics like finding the balance of being assertive without being labelled bossy and how obsessed Indian uncles & aunties still are about our love lives. Thank you so much for the support that you've given Season 2, I really appreciate it. Season 3 will be out in September 2021. Divorce is something that is very prevalent in our society but also has a lot of negative connotations attached to it within the South Asian community. Data from the UK's Office of National Statistics for 2019 shows 107,599 opposite-sex divorces in 2019 in England and Wales, increase of 18.4% and 822 same-sex divorces, nearly twice the number (428) in 2018. The majority of divorces of opposite-sex couples in 2019 were petitioned by the wife (62%). In this episode I'm joined by Jigna who shares her journey with divorce. Jigna a full time finance professional and uses her weekends to create fashion content for her Instagram page. Today I’m joined by Ashley, a researcher of sexual abuse in South Asian communities, She has recently completed her research titled “Reclaiming Shakit: The journey to wellbeing for South Asian immigrant women survivors of sexual violence”. She has been advocating for survivors for the last four years, after noticing the gaps in the current systems that support South Asian survivors, having been through it herself. She felt it was important to understand the lived experience of South Asian survivors who are often left in the margins of sexual violence research and practice. We talk about what consists of sexual abuse, the culture of silence, the concept of honour (izzat) and the framework she designed to aid survivors with healing. Dating apps are the modern way of dating so today I’m joined by Meera, you might know Meera from the popular UK dating show called Take me out, she was a contestant on season 11. Meera is also a co-host of a dating and relationship radio show called your game and the perfect person in my eyes to talk about all things dating apps. We share personal stories about our experiences with dating apps from what we look for when we’re swiping, the dating apps we use and the alternatives that the South Asian community has instead of dating apps. That saying, I’m 100% that girl who will download a dating up and then delete it 3 hours later and not ashamed of that. Saying that, dating apps are great because you’re connected to so many people and obvs the swiping is fun, but there’s a part of me that’s always wary about them because of the cat-fishing and people’s true intentions. I’m very old school and always thought the best way to meet people for dates is through friends or they’ll magically appear, but that doesn’t mean I don’t give dating apps a chance, and on the rare occasion that I do, I always remind myself that there are people like me on those apps. Today, I’m sharing KJ’s story. In June 2019, KJ was walking home at night when she was randomly attacked and stabbed in the leg, since then she’s has been on a journey of recovery, transforming her trauma and helping other people through her instagram page ‘transforming trauma’. I’ve linked KJ’s instagram down below if you want to check it out, it’s a really awesome page and I love her courage for starting it. The last week has been really heavy especially with everything going on with women’s safety and the news of Sarah Everard. The news of her disappearance and murder has opened up the conversation on women’s safety and the fact that a lot of us don’t feel safe when walking home at night even though we’ve taken the massive list of precautions that we’re “supposed” to. Statistics show that 51% of the UK population are female and among all females 80% have experienced sexual harassment. Something that I did want to say that’s been on my chest, I feel like in the last week a lot of people sharing posts about women’s safety are women, but barely any men. We need men to be an ally in this because a lot of times the onus has been on women to protect themselves from men when actually we should be educating men on how to not be a threat. Today’s a really special episode, because we’re talking about Bhangra and Friendships. For people that might not know I’ve been a professional Bhangra dancer for 6 years now, with 6 competitions under my belt and it was a hobby that was a big part of my early twenties and today I’m joined by Jessica, a 3 time award winning UK best female dancer and a very dear friend. Jessica actually came with me to my first ever Bhangra class and I’m so glad that we were able to start our Bhangra journey’s together and we’ve been friends for a really long time so we thought we’d do a friendship test to you know reminisce. You may of heard Jessica on the podcast before because she was a guest in Season 1 episode 5 & 6 we were spoke about colourism, first dates and heartbreaks. Now before we get into the episode I do want to explain a bit about what Bhangra is for anyone listening who doesn’t know, Bhangra is a dance that originate d in North India, specifically in an state called Punjab which is one of the states known for agriculture. The dance was traditionally used to celebrate a good harvest. When residents from Punjab immigrated to the western world to countries such as the UK, USA and Canada they took that culture with them and Bhangra has been past down from generations. In the UK, there are various Bhangra competitions that have been formed over the years with one of them The Bhangra Showdown which started in 2007 by students at Imperial College London, which has now become one of the biggest Bhangra competitions in the world, hosting in legendary venues like Wembley Arena and the Hammersmith Apollo. Join us as we talk about how we first started Bhangra, what motivated us to continue dancing and the impact it has had on our lives. (P.s this episode is funny) Hope you enjoy the episode! Now today’s episode as the title suggests we’re talking about pregnancy loss, which unfortunately is so common but also not spoken about- and I don’t want to limit it to just the south asian community because I feel like it’s not spoken in any community that openly. Did you know that a miscarriage happens in about estimated 1 in 4 pregnancies (25%) and about 1 in 100 women in the UK experience recurrent miscarriages (that’s 3 or more miscarriages in a row) I’m so honoured that I’m able to share Mrs Patel’s story, she’s a south asian born in the states and now living in the UK. During her pregnancy journey she had two ectopic pregnancies, two miscarriages and two rounds of IVF. But the story has a happy ending as she welcomed baby Patel in 2020. Honestly, I didn’t even know what an ectopic pregnancy was until I recorded this episode. So if anyone else was like me and doesn’t know, an ectopic pregnancy is when a fertilised egg starts to grow somewhere other than in the normal lining of the womb. They can sometimes be called tubal pregnancies or tubal ectopics. In very rare cases, the pregnancy can also develop somewhere else – e.g. where the tube meets the uterus or in the cervix. If an ectopic pregnancy is not treated, the tube may rupture which means it needs to be dealt with urgently and fatal. It’s estimated that there are around 12,000 cases of ectopic pregnancy a year in the UK. Hope you enjoy the episode! In today’s episode I’m sharing five reasons why it’s okay to be single (there’s definitely more than five, but these are my top five). With valentines day coming up this weekend, I feel like it makes some single people feel inadequate because they’re not in a relationship. Society puts a lot of pressure on people to be in relationships and sometimes puts them on a pedestal. However, being in a relationship is a choice and you shouldn’t rush just because everyone else is. It’s okay to be single and honestly it has it perks. Today’s we’re talking about embracing our culture and the heritage we belong to, as Asians we have such a rich heritage that we might not know about but it shapes who we are today. We’ll also be talking about the Farmer’s protests that are currently happening in India. For those who might not, to break it down the Indian government has passed 3 farming laws which allow the farmer can sell directly on corporations however, it means that it will get rid of the minimum fixed pricing- which is the equivalent to minimum wage. This means corporations can pay what they want since they have the buyer power and the farmer will feel forced to sell at a low rate, which can lead to potential exploitation, high debt and potentially having to sell land passed down to them for generations. The farmers are protesting against these laws as they believe it doesn’t benefit them and only the corporations and want the old system back where they have stability and a fair minimum wage especially since 60% of the population depends on agriculture for a living. To put it into simple terms, the farmers are protesting for minimum wage (literally just minimum wage) to provide for their family because that’s the only income they have. In this solo episode, I share reasons why I love being single and some things I don’t like about being single. I also share some lessons that my single life has taught me. I just want to say, that being single isn’t a bad thing but sometimes society makes single people feel like there is something wrong with them, and that’s not the case at all. So if you are single right now, just remember that there is nothing wrong with you and you are beautiful just the way you are.
