Alternative career change to entrepreneur. “One doesn't fail; one learns. When building a business, nothing ever happens the first time, and it's a constant cycle of trying, not failing but learning.” Monica Flores is a Learning Design Professional from Mexico that moved to Canada 20 years ago. Currently, she lives with her husband and her two little children. In our conversation, she tells us about how she studied to be a high school history teacher in Mexico, but right after graduating, her family moved to Canada, where she couldn't find a job as a teacher. She decided to do a masters in education, focused on adult education, fell in love with it, and never looked back. Nowadays, she works as an Instructional Designer (or Learning Design Professional) in the provincial government. An Instructional Designer helps experts create courses based on their expertise. With the theory and the science of learning how adults learn, they produce high-quality content that is engaging and effective. She has also been informally making contracts with people in her circle. Until now, she has been a full-time employee, but recently her husband decided he wanted to homeschool their children when the time comes. Also, they would like more flexibility to visit their parents, so they needed a second income. Last year, she registered as a business to formally make her contracts. In our interview, she tells us about how she learned to build a business from scratch and how it has been a journey in which a whole new world was unveiled in front of her eyes. She took courses, read books, started listening to entrepreneurial podcasts, joined entrepreneur groups, and found a squad for the moral support everyone starting a business needs. On the other hand, she also tells us about all the struggles that come with starting a business and how she has been managing them. For example, thinking of herself as a tired mom who must be devoted to her children and has good time management. You need to learn about the growth mindset and adopt it. You need to believe you can do it. Take what is good for you and what works for you, and make the best of being yourself.Catch this new episode of Rehab Rebels out now on Spotify, Apple Podcast, Google Podcast and all podcast platforms available. #020 How Occupational & Physical Therapists use equine modalities as a holistic approach to their therapy business. Alternative career change to therapy business using equine modalities. “One of my biggest passions is the idea of taking risks which is the other thing that made me pursue this as a treatment modality. Our self-esteem is built when finding the boundaries of what we are capable of.” Stephanie is a PT that graduated in 1992. In our conversation, she tells us how the Pathways Ponies Group was an organic extension of her personal life because she has always been involved with horses. She also tells us about how she's always been a Holistic care provider and how three years ago, she started a Master of Psychotherapy, which she finished this year. She thinks it is very complementary to her PT degree. Nicole is an OT that graduated in 1995. She tells us how she always wanted to work in pediatrics. Her typical work week consists of private practice one day, clinic another day, and another day she works at the Pathway Ponies Program with Steph. For the last 12 years, she's been focused on children and youth mental health with emotional regulation and anxiety issues. In our interview, Nicole tells us that when she was at the children's hospital, they had a therapy dog that would visit regularly. The OT department ran that program, and that was when she had her first taste of animal-assisted therapy and its power. Then she learned about Pathways Therapy. She started working there when Steph invited her to use equine-assisted therapy, and she thought it was a fantastic partnership. On the other hand, Steph tells us how she volunteered in a Therapy Riding facility as a consultant PT and worked with the riding instructors to figure out how they would adapt the riding to kids with disabilities. That's when she realized how much more could be done with the horses. She also tells us how she thinks the program is better with Nicole. The two of them are passionate about this area of care and have a similar approach despite being a PT and an OT. For Steph, it's been a joy having Nicole as a teammate and not doing it alone. During the conversation, they tell us how with this therapy, kids feel like they are riding instead of doing therapy. With this therapy they can get a lot more done in half an hour than what they can get done in a whole week in the clinic. They also love the magic that happens when kids or adults challenge themselves to do something they perceive as dangerous; they believe it is spiritually valuable and builds self-esteem. They also tell us about all their struggles including economically, as it is an expensive therapy. They tell us that once you find what brings you joy, that positive energy fills you up positively, so you can be creative, find ways to earn money and make a living.Catch this new episode of Rehab Rebels out now on Spotify, Apple Podcast, Google Podcast and all podcast platforms available. #019 Listen to how Angelas occupational therapy lead her to a personal research career in kinship care. Learn what kinship care is and how Angela based her research on kinship care. Alternative career change to online business and research. “I built a community, and I feel like I'm the professional doing the work and giving to others; but, at the same time, I feel others have given me back a lot in the process, and that's what motivates me to keep going.” Angela Tobin went to the Ohio State University and graduated in May ‘22. In our interview, Angela shared that she learned about Occupational Therapy (OT) school randomly and wasn't sure about it, so she changed to Psychology, but in the end, she returned to OT. Currently, her primary work is at the UNC School of Social Work, where she researches kinship families. She also runs a support group that meets twice a week, which she started three years ago while she was still a student for kinship families. Also, she is training in consulting within kinship care to provide information about kinship families and how we can support them. In our conversation, Angela tells us how she got interested in this personal topic as she comes from a kinship family. Angela realized that no one was doing anything related to Kinship Care in the OT field, so she thought outside the box and Googled kinship organizations in Ohio. She only found one, so she emailed them her idea, applied for a fellowship, and made a good connection to get help for her support group. For Angela, mental health is the route of OT, but she also thinks that holistically we can serve populations and rethink what Occupational Therapy is. She fell in love with the OT philosophy because it can apply to anything offering a unique glance that comes through in the work OTs do.Catch this new episode of Rehab Rebels out now on Spotify, Apple Podcast, Google Podcast and all podcast platforms available.
