In this episode, Heidi Hadley dives into the vital role of co-regulation for your nervous system health. You'll learn how being around calm, regulated people — as well as connecting with animals and immersing yourself in nature — can significantly help regulate your own nervous system, ease stress, and promote a sense of safety and well-being.Key points covered:

UNLEASHED (at work & home) with Colleen Pelar

When we talk about the “human-animal connection,” most of us tend to think of it in positive terms–therapy animals, childhood pets, and all the many ways that animals enrich our lives. What we don't often think about, however, is the darker side of that bond–how animal abuse and other forms of domestic and family violence are often interconnected and can even be warning signs of each other. But when we treat violence against animals as completely separate from violence against humans, we often miss the chance to help vulnerable individuals of all species. My guest today, Phil Arkow, has spent decades studying the link between humans and animals in both its best and worst forms. A pioneer of animal therapy as well as the founder of the National Link Coalition, which works to raise awareness of the link between animal abuse and other forms of violence, Phil has seen both the dark and light sides of the human-animal bond. He came on the show today to talk about his work and share some words to live by. Links worth clicking The National Link Coalition (sign up for their newsletter!) In this podcast, Dr Gillian Tabor critiques her own research on the effects of percussive therapy on equine thoracic profiles, mechanical nociceptive thresholds, spinal and limb kinematics, and gait symmetry. The study aimed to provide evidence for the efficacy of percussive therapy devices, which are often marketed with unverified claims. The research methodology included a randomised, blinded crossover design, and the results indicated no significant differences between treatment and sham groups, although no adverse effects were observed. The discussion highlights the importance of distinguishing between statistical and clinical significance and suggests areas for future research.Dr Gillian Tabor is MSc ResM MCSP HCPCreg, a Chartered Physiotherapist, Cat A member ‘Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Animal Therapy and has lots of great help and advice for horse owners - check out all of her work here - Dr Gillian TaborRead the full research paper here.----To find out more about becoming a member >>> AskAnimalweb.comNot a Member? Cows join horses and dogs for human-animal therapy

A horse-riding school in Australia is using cows as animal therapy to help people of all ages. This new type of mental health service is growing rapidly in Australia, but psychologists say national guidelines are necessary for the safety of both humans and animals. Karl McKeown is from Melbourne, Australia. He was born with cerebral palsy and scoliosis and four years ago he suffered a brain aneurysm. Coming to the Euroa Horse Park in Victoria is helping him recover by taking part in animal-assisted therapy. “And it does make you think, you have to slow down. They don't come up to your speed, you've got to go back to theirs and it does give you a whole new focus,” says McKeown. “And they become more aware of their body language, their communication, and the trust and respect grows,” explains Vanessa Hawkins of Euroa Horse Park. Animal-assisted therapy participants say they can feel real mental and physical improvements from being in the presence of animals, but health experts are still on the fence as to the therapy's clinical benefits. This sector is growing very fast in Australia and psychologists say there's an urgent need for national guidelines and regulatory boards. “The field is really in its infancy, and a lot more research is needed,” says Professor Sue Cotton of Orygen Youth Mental Health. “There are a number of countries in Europe that already have legislation in place that stipulates how many hours of training and that sort of thing,” says psychologist Melanie Jones. To help regulate this emerging sector, Wendy Coombe started a non-profit organization. “I think therapy animal, or animal-assisted therapy, has been used across a range of different services that do not always include a therapist,” says Animal Therapies Limited director Wendy Coombe. Experts say people who are considering using this kind of therapy should do their research on the service provider and also ask for guidance from bodies such as the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. “It's on us to actually be really, really clear if we are providing therapeutic services so that vulnerable people in the community don't become misled,” says Jones. #020 How Occupational & Physical Therapists use equine modalities as a holistic approach to their therapy business. Alternative career change to therapy business using equine modalities. “One of my biggest passions is the idea of taking risks which is the other thing that made me pursue this as a treatment modality. Our self-esteem is built when finding the boundaries of what we are capable of.” Stephanie is a PT that graduated in 1992. In our conversation, she tells us how the Pathways Ponies Group was an organic extension of her personal life because she has always been involved with horses. She also tells us about how she's always been a Holistic care provider and how three years ago, she started a Master of Psychotherapy, which she finished this year. She thinks it is very complementary to her PT degree. Nicole is an OT that graduated in 1995. She tells us how she always wanted to work in pediatrics. Her typical work week consists of private practice one day, clinic another day, and another day she works at the Pathway Ponies Program with Steph. For the last 12 years, she's been focused on children and youth mental health with emotional regulation and anxiety issues. In our interview, Nicole tells us that when she was at the children's hospital, they had a therapy dog that would visit regularly. The OT department ran that program, and that was when she had her first taste of animal-assisted therapy and its power. Then she learned about Pathways Therapy. She started working there when Steph invited her to use equine-assisted therapy, and she thought it was a fantastic partnership. On the other hand, Steph tells us how she volunteered in a Therapy Riding facility as a consultant PT and worked with the riding instructors to figure out how they would adapt the riding to kids with disabilities. That's when she realized how much more could be done with the horses. She also tells us how she thinks the program is better with Nicole. The two of them are passionate about this area of care and have a similar approach despite being a PT and an OT. For Steph, it's been a joy having Nicole as a teammate and not doing it alone. During the conversation, they tell us how with this therapy, kids feel like they are riding instead of doing therapy. With this therapy they can get a lot more done in half an hour than what they can get done in a whole week in the clinic. They also love the magic that happens when kids or adults challenge themselves to do something they perceive as dangerous; they believe it is spiritually valuable and builds self-esteem. They also tell us about all their struggles including economically, as it is an expensive therapy. They tell us that once you find what brings you joy, that positive energy fills you up positively, so you can be creative, find ways to earn money and make a living.Catch this new episode of Rehab Rebels out now on Spotify, Apple Podcast, Google Podcast and all podcast platforms available. For links and show notes, head to:https://rehabrebels.org/020Start your Rehab Rebel Journey!Receive access to FREE monthly progress updates, interview schedule, and a BONUS Top 25 Alternative Careers List for Rehab Professionals when you Start your Rebel Career and be part of the Rehab Rebels Tribe!Join us on Instagram and Facebook or your favorite social media @rehabrebels!Subscribe through Apple Podcast or Spotify!Support the show

In part two of this two part episode, I go deeper with Lynn Thomas, Ulla Frederiksen and her husband, Fred Bueltmann, to understand some of their most miraculous experiences working with horses themselves, and witnessing the transformations of the groups and clients they have connected to horses.  (If you have not heard their individual introductions, I encourage you to go back to part one, which dropped yesterday to hear more about each of them, or read their bios in the show notes).  With Lynn's experience, vision, and passion for the impact horses have on well-being, in 2021 she co-founded Horses for Mental Health (HMH) as a non-profit advocacy organization to increase awareness, public engagement, funds and access to programs incorporating horses for mental health and personal growth.  Through the annual Seen Through Horses campaign, started in 2022, HMH convenes philanthropists, ambassadors, companies, governments, and programs to work in collaboration expanding the role horses play in mental health and realize our collective vision of a world where all mental health needs are met – together.  Horses for Mental Health, has a campaign coming up; read more about here:"We are excited to announce the second annual Seen Through Horses Campaign; a peer-to-peer campaign composed of individuals, nonprofits, mental health specialists, influencers, and businesses to increase awareness, public engagement, and raise funds to improve access to programs incorporating horses for mental health and personal growth. I had the pleasure of interviewing Leigh Anne Bianchi, Founder of Good Citizenship Project recently on TSC Talks. She was joined by her business manager Carla Bell. We had a free ranging discussion covering many topics but all regarding the benefits of the sort of unconventional programming Leigh Anne has developed through GCP and how this meets many of the huge gaping unmet needs for those individuals diagnosed with autism and other special needs that our systems of care have become too siloed and disconnected to address. “Developing a sense of meaning and purpose, social-emotional skills, work ethic, and peer relationships by volunteering, distributing donations, and supporting local farms."In my opinion, what she shares are gems of vital importance. AS someone who carries a diagnosis of Autism AND has worked within our siloed and disconnected systems of care, she gets it on a whole new level. What is missing, what is needed. One of her most important assets is her ability to ask why and watch, observe what is going on without judgment or preconceived notions based on dogmatic teachings not relevant to real life. Leigh Anne IS real life. She knows how what and why to reach and engage kids who have often had no one their entire lives really see them. The energetics of the interactions are often the most important part and the very part of our offspring's with special needs education that is rarely observed or explored. To do so freely requires unconventional programming and thinking and IS what will give these individuals deep embedded experience to carry forward and integrate into every aspect of their lives. Priceless. So that being said, this is one of the most important discussions I've had to date on TSC Talks personally as my son Jack has benefitted immensely from participating in this sort of immersive, apprenticeship experience gaining valuable skills, both tangible and energetic. Here's a recent description of gains made: “There's A LOT going on there when we're together. Not just the obvious, like physical fitness, and employment-based objectives, but Distress Tolerance, Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, time management, generalizing skills, problem-solving.... learning how and when NOT to answer back to an authority figure. (Instead of saying, "I know," or "I was going to do that," when he clearly wasn't, just saying "OK.") We address that OFTEN. Staying on topic, being able to complete a task WHILE socializing... Another example is planning. Looking at the task at hand (like cleaning a pen or stall) and being able to decide which tools you're going to need (the pen might require a garden rake and a metal pitchfork, vs. an aluminum shovel and a plastic pitchfork for the stall), and how to efficiently complete the task. Right now, he tends to be on autopilot at Jesse's, because he's done it before, and knows what tools to use. But if we go to a different barn/farm, he will sometimes just walk into the stall without any tools or automatically grab the tools that he'd use as Jesse's. But Jesse has brand-new rubber stall mats under the shavings, whereas other barns might have hard, packed-down dirt that is uneven, old, warped stall mats, or even slab cement under the shavings, which impacts the tools needed for the job. Additionally, the concept of 'using your head to save your feet and planning out the technique or way you're going to do something....like cleaning the stall of the older horse first so that you can put him in there to eat first since it takes him so long. Or, turning on the hose as you walk by it upon arrival, so you don't have to go all the way back out to the spigot when you're ready to fill waters” You get the idea. My name is Tara Lord. I am 23 years old, I work as a Youth programs Co-ordinator for a youth counselling and suicide prevention organisation and also work in a psychiatric hostel and as a community rehabilitation worker, I also have a role as a Youth Ambassador with the Mental Health Foundation of Australia and have volunteered with a number of organisations in the community. I have my own lived experience with mental health, and have always had a passion for helping people. One of my main passion lies where I run my own animal therapy business (Kupu Kupu Australia) , where I take my dog around to mental health and disability facilities, as well as schools, respite centres, aged care facilities, foster homes and much more. In WA there is little knowledge / services in animal therapy and that is something I am an advocate for to change hence I started my own business. Animal Therapy is proven to reduce cortisol levels (stress hormone) and increase oxytocin, the love hormone. I'm so lucky to have an incredible job where I'm able to share this with people. I have always loved animals, and I have seen from a young age the impact they have on people. I've always had a dog and they have always a brought so much joy to my life, whenever I was sick, sad, excited, anything, they were there for me. I have always had a passion for helping people, I learnt quite young the world is a scary place where terrible things happen, I knew from this moment on, I wanted to change the world in one way or another. I wanted to share love and happiness and be a voice raise to awareness for disability and mental illness. So I decided to start up Kupu Kupu Australia. Loki was adopted from SAFE Bunbury and after lots of training and hard work and gaining qualifications and accreditation as a therapy team, We work with private clients to overcome boundaries and join them on their journey in recovery. We visit schools for de stress days, visit hospitals and aged care facilities to spread some love and happiness, and work on recovery goals and facilitate programs and interventions to suit and help people's medical/ recovery plans. Our plans for the next couple of years is to purchase a large property and add some more friends to our Therapy team (including lizards, cats, rabbits, donkeys, alpacas and much more) all rescue- this will be a fully functioning therapy ranch where clients can come for respite, rehab and much more. We also are hoping to have accommodation for families to come and have a getaway as well emergency accommodation for people experiencing domestic violence. Kupu Kupu means butterfly in Indonesia which represents the transformation into a better life. For me its about creating an inclusive environment and ensuring everybody has access, I think there is a lot of stigma in society around mental health, and I want to ensure that everyone feels welcome. I think it's so important that we raise awareness and speak up about it, and I hope that within the work I do I can encourage people to do that. With all the work that I do I hope to break down barriers and reduce stigma in the community and raise awareness around mental health, I aim to be an advocate for change. I also recently received the Victoria Park Youth Citizen of the Year Award, and was a finalist in the 2019 and 2020 West Australian Young Achiever of the Year Awards, and am currently a finalist in the 2021 awards) I also recently completed the leadership WA course leadability which I found extremely empowering and just completed a training through the Mental Health Commission called recovery college facilitator training which I loved. I am always looking for ways to broaden my horizons and develop to support the community to work towards a shared goal of making a real difference

Chuck Mitchell Season 2 continues with another extraordinary Tallahassee neighbor – Chuck Mitchell.  Chuck’s service to our community has impacted countless lives and will benefit generations to come. As we explore community building on this show, I especially love Chuck’s story because there’s a prominent theme of physically building.  As a founder of Mad Dog Construction, he’s impacted the way we build in this community – focusing on responsible growth and sustainability.  Through his volunteer work, he’s organized and participated in countless work parties to build homes for people.  He’s built playgrounds for kids.  And he played a major role in the creation of the Greenway along Miccosukee Road. But you know… that’s not even why I asked him on this show.  It’s his Animal Therapy work that caught my attention most recently.  Chuck told me a story many years ago that has stayed with me all this time… it’s about how dogs came to be allowed in our local courtrooms to support child victims of sexual violence.  This story is both heart breaking and heartwarming at the same time… but hearing about the impact the animals and volunteers have on people’s lives is what makes this story ultimately uplifting and inspirational. Because we covered so much territory with Chuck, we’re giving you two episodes with him.  In this first one, we cover the TMH Animal Therapy program, the beginnings of the Miccosukee Land Co-op and Mad Dog Construction, and throughout we talk about building community through shared experiences like a legendary softball team and volunteer efforts.  Then we’ll have Chuck back in the next episode to share two stories that demonstrate why local builders and residents play an important role in shaping the community where they live and work.  Join us for part 2 to hear about Chuck’s role in preserving the DeSoto site where Christmas was first celebrated in America. And also learn about the development of the Miccosukee Greenway which is surprisingly relevant today as our community considers how to develop the Welaunee area. We first met and got to know Liz Beeson in 2019. At the time, she was raising money for a Caring Cowgirl minivan to cart around her therapy mini dwarf horse and mini donkey. (Please go back and listen to Part 1 and Part 2 of her podcast with us.) Fast-forward to earlier this month, when we caught up with Liz to hear what's been going on in her and the minis's lives. Among other stories in this special podcast, Liz talks about joining Brianna Noble's "Heels Down, Fists Up" equestrian demonstrations for racial justice. We recorded this podcast outside of Thee Parkside in Potrero Hill in September 2020. Photography by Michelle Kilfeather

Pet Peeves - hot-button pet issues that make owners growl, wag and purr, or bare their teeth - Pets & Animals on Pet Life Rad

Service dogs have become a very public and vital part of our society. But there’s another area that doesn’t get quite as much hand-waving. Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) includes companion animals as a part of the patient’s therapy in a treatment plan designed by a health care professional. For instance, a child might be more willing to toss a ball for the dog to fetch, than follow a human therapist’s instructions to rehab a painful injury. A pioneer in the field, Nancy Stanley first introduced "Animal Therapy" to severely handicapped children and to convalescent hospitals for the elderly in 1982 after founding Tender Loving Zoo, a nonprofit organization.
