Back in 1966 when the Vietnam War was raging, folk singer Arlo Guthrie started performing a song called Alice’s Restaurant Massacree . The 18-minute talking blues tune was about a Thanksgiving gathering in Western Massachusetts, after which Guthrie and a friend were arrested for dumping some garbage in the town of Stockbridge. The song was turned into a movie and despite its length became a Thanksgiving standard on rock radio. WBGO’s Jon Kalish tells us how a New York radio station helped launch the song.

because you don't want to freak out the squares. * What's fruity, cheezma? * Trying to get your friends to follow the script of your joke but they keep making their own jokes instead. * Tweeting about there being no hits for "fruity cheezma" and now there being one hit for "fruity cheezma." * The cheese tea rocking the boba world. * Copping to a certain amount of midwestern provincialism. * The probability of inhaling boba being very high but it's great though. * Blowing a tapioca ball directly into the mouth of your enemy right as they're inhaling. * The end of your boba beverage being like The Very Hungry Caterpillar. * A dare than someone should not have taken and that someone having possibly been you. * Cream cheese and fruit going together. * The kind of logic you don't want to be applying to food. * Putting all your old food combo ideas on the menu without testing any of them because Fruity Cheezma worked out somehow. * Wanting peanut butter to work with sliced cheese because you can roll it up like a taquito. * Figuring out that milk and Cheerios go together because they're both kind of off-white so next you try orange juice and Cheez-Its. * Cheez-Its staying crispy in orange juice because they're so oily. * A Cheez-It being named Arthur and loving its mother. * The driver in front of you making a right turn on red from the third lane over because she was in a hurry to get to the library and walking up to her to ask for reparations. * A telling being told or not being told.

Arlo Guthrie's first record release was the fabled "Alice's Restaurant," released in 1967.  It was unusual for several reasons ... most notably that it was 18+ minutes long and mostly narration.  Here, Arlo reflects on his debut offering, which became an instant classic. Welcome to episode 28 of See Hear Podcast. It's Bernie's selection this month, and he's gone for a film based on a song. It's the Arthur Penn-directed "Alice's Restaurant" based on the song of the same name by Arlo Guthrie.   The original song / monologue was a funny (allegedly true) tale about how Arlo gets arrested for dumping garbage away from the city dump and then gets rejected from being drafted to fight in the Vietnam war.  He's not moral enough to kill people because of his "criminal record" as a litterbug.   The film tells this tale, but (by necessity) fleshes out the story into an episodic series of events concerning Arlo, his friends Ray and Alice, the hippies they become surrogate parents to, and conservative America at war with itself as well as being at war on the world stage.   The music connection? Well it is based on a song, but music was a huge part of the counter culture of the period. Arlo is caught up in the values and the music of his predecessors as well as his contemporaries.
