Y'all! Episode 48 is in your earholes! Thank you for popping back in for today's stories, where Bailey is first with the completely pointless murder of Tina Marcotte. Tina deserved so much better than her killer did by her. He was a useless loser with a stupid lie of an alibi, and there was no way he was ever going to get away with it. But you don't want to miss how he solved THAT problem. It's gross, but in this situation, he deserved what he got.And then Beth has a different kind of survivor story. The murder attempt turned into a race against time to save the victim, who lost 2/3 of herself. Today's survivor is 600 years old, has seen more history than most of us combined, and the reason this victim was attacked was for the most pathetic of reasons. Listen to how a guy confessed at his methadone clinic to being the person who nearly killed the Austin Treaty Oak, which has been part of Texas history since before there was a USA. There's more to this story than you might think.Thank you for joining us today. You know how much you mean to us, and we hope you are getting your entries in for the True Crime BnBeanie Giveaway on December 28, which will be announced in our December 30th Episode 50! You don't often hear of gins from Texas, but Treaty Oak have been distilling their Waterloo Gin since 2011. With a distinctly Texan flavour and attitude, Waterloo is best known for their Antique Gin, a barrel-aged liquid that many have described as one that will change your mind about gin. To discuss this further, we talk with Jamie Biel, Treaty Oak's director of science and sustainability about aged gin, botanicals, barrels and of course, sustainability.

In the summer of 1989, someone had tried to kill a beloved resident of Austin, Texas, and the people were demanding justice. The victim was barely clinging to life, as countless well-wishers sent get-well cards and cans of chicken soup. Who was this icon of Austin? A 600-year-old tree named Treaty Oak. And as the lone city forester valiantly tried to save the mighty oak’s life, the police were searching for the answer to the question: “Who would want to murder a tree?” To learn more about how CNN protects listener privacy, visit cnn.com/privacy

We talk about working with Miguel at Valentina's Tex-Mex BBQ to Stiles Switch BBQ & Brew to Whitfields, settling in at Alice's Restaurants. He gained incredible knowledge and experience working amazing cooks, pitmasters, and owners. We go deeply into what Treaty Oak is doing during this time and how they have progressed since he came on board. Lastly, we end with him speaking about the amazing work environment it is at Treaty Oak and what a majestic and property the 26 acres lies on.
Treaty Oak Distilling with Director of Science and Sustainability, Jamie Biel. Treaty Oak is anchored in the roots of tradition and yet each inspired by unique cultural impulses. They embrace the scientific method, even as they collect artistic perspectives to blend with the distilling process. As a group, they're driven to tinker and test. They are pushed to re-think the creative process the way disruptive musicians, chefs, and painters do. Treaty Oak experiment with ingredients and how they’re sourced, with distilling techniques, with ways of finishing—always informed by hard-won knowledge. They are all collected at Treaty Oak because their founder believes in the creative yield of eclectic experiences. They're here because of the question “what if …?” The people of Treaty Oak believe in everything that got them here. But more importantly, they believe all of that is enough to help them create the next great spirit. Treaty Oak Distillery is named after the famous 500-year old tree in Austin, under which Stephen F. Austin signed agreements defining the borders of Texas. Their gins are called Waterloo, after the original name of Austin. They moved to Dripping Springs, a place with a rich history of gatherings and shared perspectives. The wide variety and numerous sizes of stills they have running have given them a depth of knowledge of distillation that allows them consistency and quality. That search for consistency has led Treaty Oak to the column still. They have incrementally scaled up from a 5-gallon pot still to a continuous column.

Ryan Newland's path to pit building started with fabrication. Building unique set designs for Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Pink his innovative work set the stage for custom one-off pits that he would build after moving to Texas. Probably currently most well known for the hog cookers at Banger's in Austin, he collaborated with Sunny Moberg to build a wild motorized pit for Smoke Draw BBQ that you have to see and his pits are beginning to show up at many well known barbecue joints. From the Santa Maria style live fire grill for Treaty Oak to dual 500's and more, if you can dream it Backline Smokers can build it. Today’s guest is Daniel Barnes, founder and CEO of Treaty Oak Distilling in Dripping Springs. We sit down at the distillery’s 28 acre ranch and chat about the founding of the company, the early days of Texas distilling, their dedication to quality ingredients, process, and continuous curiosity, and how he took the 4th distillery in Texas and turned it into the only combination distillery, brewery, and winery in the state, with a distribution network spanning 8 states, and counting. Enjoy.

Ben and Leslie are secretly dating and life is good…for them. For everyone else, new office changes bring an inordinately high level of distress. But at least Ron has a delightful swiveling circular desk. Plus, we talk about pork, the perfection that is Calvin and Hobbes, workplace relationships, the fellow NBC show The Wall, and cheating in computer games based on game shows. Sean’s place of work also gets overrun by a bunch of teens with skateboards. Also, did you know Tobey Maguire is older than Jake Gyllenhaal? We sure didn’t! We’ve got a special guest this episode – look at us go! Daniel Barnes, CEO and founder of Treaty Oak Distilling, comes on with a delightful look at how each offering of the distillery is the embodiment of a Parks and Rec character. Daniel is also hugely passionate about diversity and inclusion in his industry, and it’s awesome to hear what Treaty Oak is doing to be more inclusive. Additionally, we talk about scaring people, crying during movies, and the different ways you can censor out nudity. Joey tells a story and says “like” about 45 times in 32 seconds. Sean has also eaten a lot of chili, so he’s especially fiery (in more ways than one). We always share some things we discuss on our social channels, so be sure to follow us on Twitter and Facebook! Treaty Oak Distillery: Where flavor meets familyWhat does a Cambridge University graduate, an Israeli Special Forces veteran, two U.S. Army vets and an engineer have in common? They help make up the team we met at Treaty Oak Distillery in Dripping Springs, Texas. Treaty Oak’s name goes back more than 500 years after the famous tree in Austin, under which Stephen F. Austin signed agreements defining the borders of Texas. The fourth oldest distillery in the Lone Star State, the whiskey they create is Texas through and through.“We kiss the vats everyday and that’s what makes it so special. It’s all done with love. This is a taste of Texas that bigger operations don’t have,” Alice Barnes, the Founder’s mother and matriarch to the staff, told us on our visit. The Ghost Hill Bourbon, which will feature in RackHouse Whiskey Club’s Christmas box, is sourced and distilled in Texas. Available in very few states, it’s a blend of three two-to-five-year-old barrels. A second bottle of Red Handed Bourbon will also be in the box. Support the show (http://www.RackHouseWhiskeyClub.com)

Four years ago, Charlie attended a panel at the 2014 San Antonio Cocktail conference that introduced him to barrel aged gin. He's been talking about it ever since as an example of regional distilleries doing amazing things. A chance encounter at the 2018 conference allowed him to reconnect with Treaty Oak, the distillery that blew him away all those years ago. In the full podcast episode (#318 of the Charlie Tonic Hour available at CharlieTonic.com), Charlie interviews their distiller. Here, in this week's Bottom's Up, he and Ginny Tonic retry their gin and experience their bourbon. How does it all hold up? What do they think? How will this story continue? Listen and learn!

I recently discovered your podcast and cannot stop listening! I have been trying to figure out the answer to this question for a while and didn't know who to turn to until I heard your podcast! Our photographer is awesome. We love his work and booked him for our engagement photos and our wedding. The main photographer (& owner) has 8 kids (seriously), and I have seen that he likes to bring his oldest son (looks 14 or 15) along with him to engagement photos and weddings and has him take pictures as the second photgrapher instead of a more experienced member of the team. It doesn't seem like he is bringing his son to teach him. Meaning him and his son are the team taking pictures, not the owner and another experienced member of the company. I'm sure that his son is a great photographer, but I really don't trust him to take pictures on the most important day of my life. We are contracted to have the owner and a second shooter take our pictures that day (along with another for video), and I'm nervous that the owner will try to make the second shooter his son. Plus, my wedding is from 7pm - 12:30am - how is a 15-year-old going to stay awake and focused for that long, until the early hours? So, how do I tell them/make it clear that I absolutely do not want his son to be there and want a real professional photographer to be his assistant (without offending him)? Thanks in advance!!!! The 500-year-old Treaty Oak in Austin, Texas was once called "the most perfect specimen of a North American tree." But in 1989, Austin's city forester realized that the Treaty Oak didn't look so good, and began to wonder whether someone had intentionally tried to kill it.
