Each month we do a scoliosis workshop in the second week of the month. This month we discuss many topics related to scoliosis, including how to determine what the best treatment is for you. We also talk about scoliosis specific exercise and bracing. This was also on YouTube live, and you can check it out below. https://youtu.be/Gi7_OlihSeU
In this episode, Skylar shares her story and experience on scoliosis surgery during college. She also describes what it is like living with spinal fusion. Being a PT student at Rocky Mountain University in Provo, UT, she has learned about the body and spine and requested an internship at my clinic. She wanted to learn more about scoliosis treatment. She shares some great insight into the education PT's receive about scoliosis and specifically treatment, as well as her experience with PT after surgery. Skylar is a great example of working hard and not letting a large scoliosis curve, or fusion, get you down. She is still a runner and athlete and has learned how to address her scoliosis as well. This is a great episode for anyone who is diagnosed with scoliosis or who has had surgery and is wondering what their outlook will be. One of the main things she talks about that helped her was to get in touch with others who also have scoliosis or who have been through surgery. Hopefully this episode helps those going through similar things. To learn more about scoliosis treatment at Align Therapy, check out https://aligntherapyutah.com/
Jenn and I sit down at our white table to discuss how we've made and implemented massive changes in our lives and how these decisions have affected each of us individually. It seems these things occur in a particular season for us, and August is the month for change. I've recently decided to leave my full-time job to build a full time coaching business, and Jenn and I have started to create a joint entity called Align Therapy and Coaching, all exciting news. I talk for a few minutes about how I felt change was on the horizon throughout the year, no matter how hard I fought it.Jenn takes a few minutes to describe some of her emotions surrounding the fear of losing autonomy and individuality in creating this new joint business and how we are working through that together.
Being a Physical Therapist myself, I tend to look for conservative ways to treat spinal problems. Scoliosis Specific Exercise is a research-backed conservative treatment approach for scoliosis. In this episode, we talk to Korey Derocher, DPT, who is a certified Schroth Therapist at Align Therapy. We discuss what Scoliosis Specific Exercise, such as The Schroth Method and the SEAS Approach, means along with who it can benefit. Scoliosis specific exercise is very different than regular physical therapy. Just like anything that is specialized, more training is required to treat scoliosis. At a regular physical therapy office, you will most likely be treated with core strengthening and maybe some stretching if you have scoliosis. Sometimes they will try to stretch the concave side, and strengthen the convex side as well, but this is a very incomplete view and approach. Scoliosis MUST be treated in a 3 dimensional way, and without creating any progression the curve above or below. The scoliosis specific exercise techniques we use at Align Therapy are the Schroth Method, as well as the SEAS Approach. You can learn more about scoliosis and how it is treated conservatively at https://aligntherapyutah.com/child-teen-scoliosis/
In this episode, David Butler describes why he decided to start a podcast based around the experience of those with scoliosis. His experience in treating those with scoliosis plays a large role in his passion for conservative treatment for spinal deformities. The goal of this podcast is to help inform and empower those living with scoliosis and other spinal deformities. There are a lot of people I get along with, but there are few people I align with (pun intended) more than Aaron Alexander, the human body genius who created Align Therapy, an integrated approach to functional movement and self-care that has helped thousands of people out of pain and into health. So, it’s generous to call this an interview — it’s really just a recording of two guys geeking out about all of the things they love: the undervalued nutrient of human connection, the skewed priorities of Western society, spiritual development and spiritual bypassing, Shaolin monks getting hit in the nards as a practice, and how we can all leverage movement for not just fitness but also self-care. And Aaron’s newest tool to help people with self-care and exercise, whether you’re at home or on the go, is the Align Band. With Aaron’s instructional videos as a guide, you will immediately have access to self-care practices, mobilizations, exercises, and therapeutic techniques pretty much anywhere that has a door. This is a great step towards making your life a gym and every movement part of your fitness practice, which can bring us one step closer to the ancestral lifestyle that our bodies were designed for. Aaron is also the host of the Align Podcast and the author of The Align Method: 5 Movement Principles for a Stronger Body, Sharper Mind, and Stress-Proof Life. This guy has so much wisdom to share, especially when it comes to optimizing your body and integrating healthy movement into your daily life, and you really can’t go wrong with any of it. You can also get 10% off an Align Band by using code “luke10” at alignpodcast.com/alignband. Topics Discussed In This Episode: Touch + Community = the primary fuel for the human organism The physical and psychological repercussions of not receiving enough human contact as an infant or child Releasing childhood and ancestral trauma to find more coherence between our heart and our head Learning from your human design The human zoo of celebrity The new Ram Dass documentary, Becoming Nobody Not drinking your own Kool-Aid Spiritual bypassing The Shaolin monks who get hit in the dick as a practice (you can watch it here) Making your life a fitness practice The research on our sedentary lifestyles done by James A. Levine Taking advantage of NEAT (non-exercise activity thermogenesis) The value of not always having rock-hard, shredded abs Reverse engineering the human organism to get to a place of compassion and love The East Forest x Ram Dass album More about this episode. Aaron and talk about the importance of proper body mechanics and functional strength. He breaks down what core strength actually means. We also discuss the benefits of a proper mindset. Aaron got me to level up and become more aware of how I was using language. We often add so many unnecessary words to our story that we are subconsciously defeating ourselves. I left this podcast feeling more empowered, open, and alive. Hope you enjoy

This is the Longevity Now All-Stars mashup show, featuring six guests doing lightning round questions. I've been attending the Longevity Now Conference in Anaheim for years and have used it as a home base to record 10 of my 150 episodes over the past two years. In fact, a few of my very first shows were recorded there in 2016. The LNC is one of the most well-attended health and wellness conferences in the world, and with good reason. You'd be hard-pressed to find a more diverse and brilliant group of people. I've interviewed many of the esteemed speakers, vendors, and even a couple attendees. There’s so much packed into this monster of an episode and six incredibly unique perspectives, but there’s one thing everyone agrees on – SUGAR IS BAD! This extraordinary show covers an insanely wide variety of topics like being hit by lightning, seeing entities at John of God in Brazil, drinking your own pee as medicine, the power of Ayurvedic medicine, the benefits and risks of plant medicine, and just about every other health trend the world has ever known. This unique bonus episode includes appearances by the following guests: Zen Wyldflower Nishimura, one of the biodynamic chocolatiers behind ZenBunni and a purveyor of the best incense in the world. Sabrina Riccio, a medicine priestess & soulistic alchemist who transformed her life after a critical lightning strike. Scott Linde, a modern apothecary & the creator of Sun Potion. Aaron Alexander, a human body genius and the creator of Align Therapy. Sahara Rose, the best-selling author of the Idiot's Guide to Ayurveda and, as described by Deepak Chopra, “a leading voice for the millennial generation into the new paradigm shift.” Tero Isokauppila, the shroom dealer who founded Four Sigmatic #ONSHROOMS. to do the cleaning) One toxin that you should be avoiding… but that you probably put in your body every day The difficulty of overcoming overstimulation (especially with a marketer’s mindset) Aaron Alexander, CR, LMT, CPT has over a decade of success as a manual therapist and movement coach. The founder of Align Therapy™, Aaron helps his clients move from pain into health through an integrated approach to functional movement and self-care. [Note: For the complete set of show notes, links, and contact info, head to https://www.wholelifechallenge.com/podcast] Believe it or not, your every movement is teaching your body to adapt. Your everyday life, all your physical activity and inactivity, creates the foundation for your health, or lack thereof. By becoming more aware of this, then controlling the messages you send to your body, you can rebalance it and literally move toward a pain-free, more enjoyable life. Aaron and Andy talk about everything from how our childhood influences our emotional drive and physical trajectory to Rolfing, why watching yourself in the gym mirror might be a great idea, the importance of head-to-toe alignment, and whether sitting really is the new smoking. We are all the products of what we do every day. That means we have a constant opportunity to move toward or away from health. In this podcast, Aaron will get you started on recognizing and rectifying how your body and mind functions through everyday awareness.
The average person SITS 7.7 hours a day, with some people sitting up to 15 hours! By comparison, the average person only gets 6.5 hours of sleep each night. No wonder we're seeing a shift away from health in the average person. After all, 71% of the US is overweight. These statistics tell us a LOT. We sit too much. We sleep and move too little. And you already know we eat more than we ever have in the history of our species - most of that coming from low quality, processed foods. But not you - right?! ;) Back to this sitting thing... The CDC has called sitting the new smoking. Since most of us work from a seated position, commute to work sitting in cars, buses, trains, and planes, and then spend much of our down time sitting in front of TV's, hunched over phones... This podcast is something you need to hear. I'm joined by Aaron Alexander of Align Therapy to discuss how our posture impacts - no, it DICTATES - our physiology. Tune in to find out how you can optimize your sitting time and overcome the muscular, skeletal, and emotional crippling that comes from sitting in submissive, depressive, "douchey" positions for 1/3 of your life (8/24 hours a day). Hack your posture while sitting to optimize your physiology, feelings, mood, decisions and hormonal health. #LiveOptimal
Align Therapy in Your LifeA practice not thought about enough is how we move. If we took the time to analyze how we move we would probably uncover the root causes to most of our joint pain and inflammation. Pulling the best practices from various different worlds, whether it's CrossFit, Yoga or Martial Arts they all have something valuable to offer. If we can pull from all that and instilling those practices into our daily movement, it will eventually become who we are. Too often we get wrapped up in the quick fix. When Aaron is looking at someone's health, he is looking at the structure organisation around their joints, their skin quality, the elasticity of their tissue, how much they smile, their eye contact and how they relate to people in a social environment, all that is health and it is all things successful people are doing. Several years ago, I learned about mindfulness the hard way. I was eating a cardiologist recommended diet that apparently wasn’t working for me and I failed to pay attention to any of the warning signs. The first person to draw attention to my mindlessness was the woman who is now my wife and co-founder at NBT. Only recently did I discover the decades of careful research on the simple practice of noticing, and how that can be both good for you and fun. My guest this week is Dr Ellen Langer, PhD, a social psychologist and the first female professor to gain tenure in the Psychology Department at Harvard University. She is the author of eleven books and more than two hundred research articles written for general and academic readers on mindfulness for over 35 years. Her best-selling books include Mindfulness; The Power of Mindful Learning; On Becoming an Artist: Reinventing Yourself Through Mindful Creativity; and Counterclockwise: Mindful Health and the Power of Possibility.
