Ida Rolf in Her Own Words: Lecture & Demo at Esalen (1967 Recording)

Voices of Esalen

Today, we're opening the vaults to share a rare and remarkable recording from Esalen's rich historical archive: a 1967 lecture and live demonstration by none other than Dr. Ida Rolf, the pioneering founder of Structural Integration—more commonly known today as Rolfing. But what is Rolfing? Often described as intense (and sometimes even painful), Rolfing is a powerful form of bodywork that focuses on the manipulation and realignment of connective tissue—fascia—to promote structural balance and physical freedom. Ida Rolf believed that by methodically reorganizing the body's structure in gravity, not only could chronic pain and postural issues be resolved, but profound emotional and psychological healing could also occur. This archival gem features Dr. Rolf in her element—lecturing with intellectual precision, delivering her insights with wit and candor, and guiding a live demo with such vivid specificity that, even without visuals, you feel transported into the room beside her. It's a masterclass in both bodywork and presence. A little backstory: Ida Rolf first came to Esalen in the 1960s at the invitation of famed Gestalt therapist Fritz Perls, who would become one of her earliest champions. According to The Upstart Spring, Rolf worked on Perls daily for a week. On the seventh day, during a neck session, he passed out—briefly. When he came to, he recounted a deeply buried trauma: a therapist twisting his neck under anesthesia decades earlier. The memory, and its accompanying tension, had haunted him for years. He credited Rolf's work with helping to release it. After that, Perls became an ardent supporter of Rolfing, and Ida returned to Esalen again and again. Esalen Institute would become the West Coast hub for her method, just as it had for Gestalt therapy. This episode is a rare opportunity to hear Dr. Rolf in her own voice, offering not just a window into the origins of Rolfing, but a taste of the charisma, intellect, and force of will that helped her change the way we think about the body, healing, and human potential.

Dr. T and Truth Fairy are delighted to welcome a very special guest to the show in this episode. Rachel Harris, PhD, the author of Swimming in the Sacred, joins them for an intimate conversation about what led her to write the book and what it contains. She details how wise women are largely left out of the larger conversation on psychedelic potential and shares knowledge from the women guides she talked with who had never been interviewed before. One of the points Rachel makes is that the women guides are not therapists and do not refer to themselves as therapists. They will refer to therapists outside themselves. We tend to be the ones who have conflated psychedelic guides with therapists. Rachel talks about how long traditional indigenously trained shamans will be considered apprentices and some of the ceremonies around the work they do. Rachel's own experiences touch on many ancient wisdoms and draw from years of study and research beyond physical work with medicines and awareness.Rachel describes lifelong learning and an unending search through experiences, a continuous exploration of self and spirituality, of being alive in the work of medicine. She expresses the need to talk about not exactly adverse experiences but about the reality of what can be experienced, of the truths of the challenges the medicine presents. Rachel's wisdom ignites strong memories and insight from both Dr. T and Truth Fairy and what evolves is a conversation so deep and honest that it is not to be missed.“Well, you know, these women are self-selected in a way that they've had unusual spiritual experiences, many of them, in their lives, often from childhood on. And... I write about this in the book because, to me, it's just very fascinating. Because I had this qualification, I had unusual spiritual experiences. I was missing a few other pieces, but that one I had. And so in that way I was similar to them. And I think because they have these unusual spiritual experiences, which, by the way, they don't mention to anybody ... They often say, I have never told anyone this and then they report an unusual spiritual experience, because our culture doesn't support this.” - Rachel HarrisAbout Rachel Harris:Psychologist Rachel Harris, PhD is the author of Swimming in the Sacred: Wisdom from the Psychedelic Underground.  She was in private practice for thirty-five years working with people interested in psychospiritual development. During a decade working in research, Rachel received a National Institutes of Health New Investigator's Award and published more than forty scientific studies in peer-reviewed journals. She has also consulted with Fortune 500 companies. Rachel was in the 1968 Esalen Residential Program, Big Sur, CA. This intensive six-month program focused on meditation and bodywork. In the early 1970s, Rachel studied with Dorothy Nolte in the movement system, Structural Awareness, based on Dr. Ida Rolf's Structural Integration (Rolfing). Rachel also co-edited the Journal of the American Dance Therapy Association for three years. Awareness of how people live and move in their bodies has always been an aspect of Rachel's approach to psychotherapy. In 2005 Rachel traveled to a retreat center in Costa Rica and serendipitously found herself with the opportunity to drink ayahuasca with Ecuadorian shamans. The morning after her first ceremony, Rachel began asking questions about the therapeutic potential of this medicine. She conducted a three-year research project with Lee Gurel, PhD that resulted in “A Study of Ayahuasca Use in North America,” published in the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs (Summer, 2012). Developed by Fritz Smith, MD in the early 1970s, Zero Balancing is a powerful body-mind therapy that teaches skilled touch to bring balance to body structure and energy. A session typically lasts 30 to 45 minutes and is offered through clothing. The practitioner uses finger pressure and gentle traction on areas of tension in the bones, joints and soft tissue to create fulcrums, or points of balance, around which the body can relax and reorganize.   By addressing the deepest and densest tissues of the body along with soft tissue and energy fields, Zero Balancing helps to clear chronic tension and blocks in the body's energy flow. ZB has been shown to reduce stress, amplify vitality and promote better postural alignment. An osteopathic physician and surgeon, Dr. Smith was fascinated by the healing power of touch. During the late 1960s, Dr. Smith studied at Esalen Institute with many of the forerunners of the body-mind therapy movement, including Ida Rolf. He met J.R. Worsley, founder of the College of Traditional Chinese Acupuncture in England, whose demonstrations "cracked" Dr. Smith's beliefs in the purely Western medical model. During this period he also began to explore yoga, meditation, spiritual teachings in India, Eastern energy medicine, and quantum physics. Dr. Smith studied with J.R. Worsley and became a licensed acupuncturist in 1972, earning both bachelor's and master's degrees in acupuncture, and becoming a fellow in the Chinese College of Acupuncture. Dr. Smith's keen observations of anatomy and energy as a force in the body led him to develop the manual therapy system of Zero Balancing. Dr. Smith has been practicing and teaching Zero Balancing throughout the world for more than 45 years. He's the author of many articles and two books, Inner Bridges: A Guide to Energy Movement and Body Structure and Alchemy of Touch: Moving Towards Mastery Through the Lens of Zero Balancing How Can Zero Balancing Help You? Zero Balancing can help relieve body aches and pain, release restrictions in movement, and provide lasting relief from emotional distress to improve overall quality of life. Zero Balancing can also be helpful with specific goals such as relief from back pain, improving concentration or sleep, releasing unwanted stress, eliminating old behavior patterns, or boosting well-being. Zero Balancing works in conjunction with medical therapy and is not a substitute for it.

In An Autobiography of Trauma: A Healing Journey (Park Street Press, 2024), renowned developer of Somatic Experiencing Peter A. Levine shares his personal journey to heal his own severe childhood trauma offering profound insights into the evolution of his innovative trauma healing method. Casting himself as a modern-day Chiron, the wounded healer of Greek mythology, Dr. Levine describes, in graphic detail, the violence of his childhood juxtaposed with specific happy and exuberant memories, which helped him prepare for coming to terms with his horrifying experiences. He shares his inner experience of being guided through Somatic Experiencing (SE) to illuminate and untangle his traumatic wounds and describes the mysterious and unexpected dreams and visions that have guided him through his life's work. Exploring his dream visitations from Albert Einstein in depth, he explains how he came to view Einstein as his personal spirit guide and mentor and how he later discovered his own personal and profound real-life connection to him through his mother. Describing his breakthroughs in developing Somatic Experiencing, the author details how he helped thousands of others before resolving his own trauma years later with the support of his method. He explains how the SE method is derived from his studies of wild animals in their natural environments, neurobiology, and more than 50 years of clinical observations. He describes his education and career as well as his encounters with noteworthy figures such as somaticists Charlotte Selver and Ida Rolf, ethological zoologist Nikolaas Tinbergen, and autism pioneer Mira Rothenberg. Unveiling the inner story of the man who changed the way psychologists, doctors, and healers understand and treat the wounds of trauma and abuse, this autobiography reveals how anyone suffering from trauma has a valuable story to tell. And by telling our stories, we can catalyze the return of hope, dignity, and wholeness. Peter A. Levine, Ph.D., holds a doctorate in Medical and Biological Physics from the University of California at Berkeley and a doctorate in Psychology from International University. Today's conversation is with Don Hanlon Johnson Don is no stranger to the embodied and somatic work, he's been involved in this field since long before many of us have been born. Now in his 90's he has been involved with so many of the pioneers and lineage holders of this field. A blurp written by Don about himself reads, “As I move into my twilight years, I am aware that the seeds that brought forth my current work were planted over half a century ago when I had my first post in teaching philosophy at what is now Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles while participating with Carl Rogers in his research project on the efficacy of student-centered learning in the school system of the Immaculate Heart sisters from kindergarten through their university. That intersection of Rogerian humanistic psychology with the experiential tradition of Socratic and Husserlian philosophy, my long history of meditation, and my first visits to the newly born Esalen Institute, gradually shaped a comprehensive approach to the education of therapists and healers, bringing together the cutting-edge theoretical, with relevant experiential dimensions, and the intellectual aspects of developing an embodied consciousness. After studying and practicing the work of Ida Rolf, I founded the first masters degree program in Somatic Psychology and succeeded in having it authorized by license-granting state boards. I was a professor in that program for some 30 years. I am now teaching in newly launched Somatics emphasis in the doctoral program of Integral and Transpersonal Psychologies. My website has more detailed information."   This was really a dream come true for me. Don was one of the people I had in mind to talk with when I created this podcast. Further proof that with hard work and diligence, dreams can come true. And they can be even more rewarding than imagined.   Todays talk ran the gamut of Rolfing history, phenomenology and other topics of which Don is an experienced and knowledgeable sage of. Interview begins @ 3:53 In this enlightening episode of The Sacred Speaks, host Dr. John Price converses with Dr. Rachel Harris, who shares insights from her latest book, "Swimming in the Sacred: Wisdom from the Psychedelic Underground". Dr. Harris illuminates her interview process with 15 veteran female guides from the psychedelic underground, revealing their enduring commitment to the spiritual over the medicalized use of these compounds. The discussion delves into the reasons these guides remain in the underground despite societal changes and legalization, attributing it to their belief in the greater spiritual and religious value of psychedelics. The disparity between psychotherapy and the spiritually-oriented approach these guides embody is examined, with Dr. Harris emphasizing that the spiritual process stands alone, independent yet not exclusive of therapy. The conversation explores the ontology of the visionary or “unseen others”, often present in psychedelic experiences, the transformative power of psychedelics, the voices of doubly silenced women, the unique bond women share with these medicines, and the relevance of cultural frameworks for the sacred. They also touch on the importance of selecting an ethical guide, concerns about the healer's ethical wellbeing, and the profound link between death and the psychedelic experience, and the importance and nature of integration for psychedelic process. Bio: Dr. Rachel Harris is a respected psychologist, prolific author, and eminent figure in the realm of psychospiritual development. She spent thirty-five years in private practice, focusing on individuals seeking psychospiritual growth. Rachel has an impressive research career, having received a National Institutes of Health New Investigator's Award and publishing over forty scientific studies in peer-reviewed journals. She has also shared her expertise with Fortune 500 companies. Rachel participated in the 1968 Esalen Residential Program, an intensive six-month meditation and bodywork course. She also studied Structural Awareness, a movement system founded on Dr. Ida Rolf's Structural Integration. This awareness of body consciousness deeply influences her psychotherapeutic approach. In the mid-1980s to early 2000s, Rachel facilitated workshops at esteemed institutions like Omega Institute, NY, and Esalen Institute, CA. She is the author of "Twenty Minute Retreats," which details the exercises she taught in her workshops. A serendipitous encounter with ayahuasca in Costa Rica in 2005 sparked Rachel's interest in the therapeutic potential of this medicine. This led to a three-year research project, culminating in "A Study of Ayahuasca Use in North America," and her influential book "Listening to Ayahuasca: New Hope for Depression, Addiction, PTSD, and Anxiety." She has recently authored "Swimming in the Sacred: Wisdom from the Psychedelic Underground." https://www.swimminginthesacred.com Website for The Sacred Speaks: http://www.thesacredspeaks.com WATCH: YouTube for The Sacred Speaks https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOAuksnpfht1udHWUVEO7Rg Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thesacredspeaks/ @thesacredspeaks Twitter: https://twitter.com/thesacredspeaks Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thesacredspeaks/ Brought to you by: https://www.thecenterforhas.com Theme music provided by: http://www.modernnationsmusic.com

Was ist Rolfing®? Judith Aston is widely recognized as a pioneer in the art and science of kinetics for her discovery of the Aston® Paradigm and consequent development of the many forms of movement training, bodyworks, fitness programs and ergonomics of Aston® Kinetics. In this episode of The ABMP Podcast, Kristin and Darren discuss Judith's ability to see the body, her early career teaching movement and physical education, and when she had her eureka moment with body symmetry. Judith Aston-Linderoth is widely recognized as a pioneer in the art and science of kinetics for her discovery of the Aston® paradigm and consequent development of Aston® Kinetics. Aston Kinetics is an educational system of movement, bodywork, fitness, and ergonomics that aims to treat each person's body as unique and customizes the work to match. Rather than enforcing physical symmetry, Aston Kinetics seeks to recognize which asymmetries are natural to a person's body and how to maximize their use when needed. Early in her career, from 1963 to 1972, Aston taught movement, physical education, and dance for performing artists and athletes at Long Beach Community College. In 1968, at the request of Dr. Ida Rolf, she developed the movement education program for Rolfing SI and taught this program for nearly a decade. Aston is an author, inventor of an array of ergonomic products, and creator of movement and bodywork programs.

Today's talk is a little different than our usual talks as we are in conversation about former Rolfer, Actor, and Artist John Lodge. We speak with his ex-wife Margaret VanderWaerden and EGSI Founder Ales Urbanczik about who he was, how he came to this work and what marvels he has left behind.   A new book has come out from the European Guild for Structural Integration about John and the work he was given from Dr Ida Rolf. They have pieced together parts of this work with additional sections by other Structural Integrators sharing their comments and stories.  It's truly a great book for the beginner and the advanced practitioner, I can't recommend enough.   We started with a little tech issues, and because of this our usual introduction has been cut off. We find our conversation beginning with Margaret talking about who John Lodge was and we just role on from there.  The book we speak about can be purchased here https://rolfguild.ch/JohnLodgeBook.html If you enjoyed today's episode, we'd appreciate it if you would leave a positive review of the podcast and subscribe to it through the platform of your choice. He studied spinal mechanics with many D.O.’s, including Philip Greenman. The founder of the Colorado Cranial Institute and he is a member of the International Association of Structural Integrators. He continues to enjoy practicing in the city of Boulder, Colorado. Nikki and I sat down to talk with Jim Asher and learn some history of both Dr Ida Rolf and the work she laid out... Lots of good and largely unheard stories included here. The sound quality did not come out as great as it was being in person, and while we do apologize for this, the quality of content that Jim shares is beyond priceless. There was also a street performer outside and you'll hear occasionally people cheering for him. In doing the editing, I decided to keep much of the talk as it was. While some stories repeat and some are circuitous, they are real and as stated from Jim himself and it felt important to me to keep it this way.  This is a longer than usual talk of ours and may be best enjoyed in sectional doses. About this episode: Jeff discusses various biomechanical modalities adjacent to yoga, whose influence can be an important factor in the cultivation of the vision of a yoga teaching practice, particularly in the one-to-one setting. Recorded in the backyard on a rainy day. Links mentioned: www.yogaonetoone.com Your Yoga Consultation Cheat Sheet More links in the body of the show notes. OVERVIEW/SUMMARY: Most yoga teacher training programs focus on teaching in the group setting. Over the past couple of decades, the number of yoga practitioners has exploded to now 40 million people, and so have yoga teacher training programs, in response. The old-fashioned way, however, was for one yoga teacher to teach one student at a time. This began to change when Sri Rama Krishna directed Vivakananda and others to take the yoga practices into the world, which led to yoga being introduced to the West. B.K.S. Iyengar and Swami Yogananda had a tremendous impact on yoga practices in the United States over the past century. How can a teacher come out of a yoga teacher training, which may have focused on group classes, and prepare themselves specifically to teach in the one-to-one setting? Open your mind to, not only other lineages of yoga than the one you have trained in, but in other biomechanical modalities that may be adjacent to the yoga practice. This is part of claiming your own practice and keeping the beginner's mind. Additional modalities may include Pilates, the Alexander Technique, the Trager Approach, Feldenkrais, energy practices, and others. The private yoga teacher will benefit from personal experience with these modalities to expand their toolkit for working with students with a variety of needs, backgrounds, and abilities. How does the yoga teacher begin to discern what modalities might be valuable in their teaching practice? They must implement these modalities in their own personal practice and test their value that way. A teacher should not bring to a student what they have not experienced themselves. In addition to the modalities listed above, biomechanical pioneers/pioneering ideas of the 20th century worth investigating: Ida Rolf (developer of the Rolfing technique). Upledger Institute (craniosacral practices) Muscle activation techniques Doug Keller Thomas Myers (Anatomy Trains) Erik Dalton Dr. Timothy McCall Dr. John Sarno The Bates Eye Method Related disciplines of body/voice and speech/movement/dance instruction are valuable, such as: Kristin Linklater Cicely Berry Voice and the actor : Berry, Cicely : Free Download, Borrow, and Streami... Includes index These alternate modalities can open the door to the more subtle aspects of the yoga practice. The most important component of the private yoga teaching practice, however, is loving your students. Seek beyond your own confirmation biases, remain curious, challenge what you know. Work directly with massage therapists, physical therapists, and chiropractors. Learn what works and what doesn't. Integrate your experience. On a practical level, your connection with these other practitioners can develop into networks that can serve your students, yourself, and these other practitioners through referrals. To sum up: have a beginner's mind, seek beyond your confirmation bias, remain curious, be grounded, engage in daily practice (awareness, discipline, self examination grounded in biomechanics), connect with practitioners of other modalities and experience them, communicate in terms of the biomechanics and allow that to integrate into more subtle, deeper, broader practices. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

In 2015, Levi broke his thoracic vertebrae playing men's league hockey leaving him feeling debilitated. After trying so many different methods to help his pain he found Rolfing. Rolfing changed so much for Levi he opened his own practice in Boulder, Colorado in 2017. He has since been able to help athletes suffering from a wide array of pain and injury issues. Levi is currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Clinical Counseling at Oregon State University to open a practice that combines Somatic therapy, clinical counseling, and coaching to help people heal from injuries and chronic pain who’ve tried varying treatment options. Rolfing is a proactive manual therapy system created by Dr. Ida Rolf as a diagnostic assessment for the body, utilizing physical touch and neuroscience principles. Instead of chasing symptoms, Rolfing alters the deeper sources of chronic injury and pain. Rolfing is not a massage technique and not another form of deep tissue massage or a way to stretch the fascia. Rolfing is a comprehensive diagnostic system that views the body in a structural sense and is not painful. During my journey in life, I have found Structural Integration in 1996 understanding immediately how powerful, transformative this approach is. Structural Integration corresponds very deeply to my own nature and so it was easy for me to desire to become a practitioner so since then I have organized my life around the aim of becoming a practitioner gathering all the prerequisite and collateral competencies that now are in my toolbox.I practice Rolf – Structural Integration in my own Studio in Milan since 2011. I also practice Sharon Wheeler’s ScarWork treatments especially on surgical scars. #70: Relieve Chronic Muscular Pain, What's Fascia? with Eric Owens, Delos TherapyBrief Summary & Guest Bio:Eric Owens is a co-founder of Delos Therapy, where Delos Therapists relieve clients of chronic muscular pain, inflammation, and dysfunction using mechanical pressure to pinpoint muscle tightness, known as “knots” or hyper-contracted fascia, to restore muscle pliability. Eric is also a co-founder of sister company, Delos Robotics, which is a robotics and AI approach to automate Delos Therapy treatments alleviating chronic pain for the masses. He graduated from Midwestern University with a Master's Degree in biomedical science. In today's episode Eric talks about what's wrong with foam rolling and traditional massage, as well as various pain-relief techniques. He teaches us what fascia is, what a healthy muscle should be like, and what to do about it at home and with a practitioner. ** Free Evaluation at Delos Therapy, Chicago (usually $30)Email info@delostherapy.com tell them “Marisa from the Foundation of Wellness Podcast” sent you for free evaluation, any location you want; 20-minute appointment, they'll discuss your condition and history, then 10-15 minutes of a sample treatment (that's almost a full treatment!)Delostherapy.com to choose locations (you may call to schedule, too)>>> Join me inside my new facebook group: “The Foundation of Wellness - a Refreshing Diet & Lifestyle Chat” : facebook.com/groups/FOWpodcastFor professional Inquiries contact host Marisa Moon, marisa@ marisamoon.com;Points of Discussion:- Eric's Father is the original inventor of the Delos Therapy technique, he was a mechanical and electrical engineer looking for solutions to his chronic pain - Muscles in their healthy state are soft, pliable, and spongy (when flexed it should be hard) - Imaging doesn't show differences in muscle states - Direct pressure into the hard muscle is effective - His Father worked on Evander Holyfield and many famous athletes- Pain is complex, multi-factorial. Many causes of pain like neurological, structural, muscular. - In medicine there's not a specialty in muscles and fascia- Patients should seek out multi-modalities for treatment- Most chronic pain has a muscular component that's overlooked- Dense fibrotic tissue in the middle of that muscle won't stretch, it's deep in the muscle- Stretching and foam rolling won't help eliminate muscular pain- What to expect in Delos Therapy Treatments?- Marisa shares her story about using Delos Therapy to treat her Piriformis Syndrome, a knot in the hip/glute muscle causing nerve pain similar to Sciatica- Eric explains Muscle Fascia - Fascia is layered under, and embedded in fat - first layer is superficial fascia - directly below that is fascia profunda - Muscle is wrapped in fascia in many ways - Each tiny muscle cell/fiber is wrapped in fascia to hold them together to make a muscle fascicle - Fascia wraps the muscle fascicle together to make your entire muscle - Muscle Fascia contains 6-10 times sensory nerves than muscle tissue - All pain and proprioception is communicated through fascia to your brain - Everything is moving towards the idea that “repetitive use of muscle tissue causes a fibrosis, a hardening of the tissue inside the muscle; and that pressure directly into it at multiple angles is by far the most effective way to break all that apart”.- How to treat muscle pain and fibrosis? - Foam rolling only affects the superficial layer and hydration - Modern foam rollers have “nubs” on them and suggest that you apply direct pressure instead of rolling - The fibrosis is deeply embedded in that muscle - Targeted pressure is the only way; think “3 dimensional” instead of stretching or massaging, target the fibrotic muscle in every direction - The direction and angle of the pressure are critical - Gliding across like a swedish massage doesn't work- Delos Therapy locations, expansion plans in Colorado and California- Delos Therapy plans for Robotics- Practical At-Home Advice - The Knobble, on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3azUqOj - Theracane or Hook Cane, on Amazon: https://amzn.to/2Ge2iHh - La Crosse Ball, on Amazon: https://amzn.to/2RjbeS1 - Advice for seeking a practitioner - Look up “Rolfing” near you (invented by Dr. Ida Rolf) which is similar to Delos Therapy - Clinical Massage Therapists will usually hold pressure but not often enough; gliding isn't for pain relief- Should you expect relief immediately?- Should you Ice? - Certain inflammation can be good because it is meant to stimulate healing - If it's unbearable or you have something important to do, after therapy you can ice- How much is Stress causing your flare-ups and pain? - Is it coming from the brain? Is your mind telling you the stress is causing pain? - There's an emotional component to pain - The pain came from muscle fibrosis, but is exacerbated by stress- Sleep is absolutely critical for repair - Go to bed and wake up at the same time - Consider a sleep tracker like the Oura Ring- Muscle Health isn't about being stronger, flexible, or having more endurance. Muscle health is about PLIABILITY. It's the core of all of those things. - If you're NOT feeling stiff, do a self-examination: push into muscle tissue checking if tissue is all soft and pliable. If not, work on pliability.Resources:- DelosTherapy.com- Instagram @delostherapychicago: instagram.com/delostherapychicago- Facebook : facebook.com/DelosTherapy- Free Evaluation at Delos Therapy: Email info@delostherapy.com and say “Marisa from the Foundation of Wellness Podcast” sent you- The Knobble, on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3azUqOj- Theracane or Hook Cane, on Amazon: https://amzn.to/2Ge2iHh - La Crosse Ball, on Amazon: https://amzn.to/2RjbeS1 - Oura Ring: https://ouraring.com *** Marisa can be your health coach! Somewhere along the California coast, between breathtaking cliffs, mineral-rich springs, and ancient forests, Michael Murphy and his friend Richard Price created The Esalen Institute in 1962. This retreat center and intentional community was a magnet for luminaries like Alan Watts, Stanislav Grof, Ida Rolf, and Joseph Campbell who all became long-term resident scholars. Today on the show, I speak to the mighty Mike Murphy about the magic of Esalen and his menagerie of friends who’ve since become legends. We talk about brokering Boris Yeltsin’s trip to the US, psychedelics vs meditation, Alan Watts’ drinking problem, and how Esalen was vaccinated against cults despite hosting a few cult leaders (ahem Timothy Leary). The through-line of our conversation is the idea of evolutionary panentheism, a philosophy of an indwelling spirit made manifest through evolution. This perspective made Esalen the seat of the Human Potential movement and guides the continuing development of the center today. There is a Sanskrit word "Lila" which refers to a terrifying kind of play: this is the game of life and we are it’s divine protagonists. “The purpose of creation, is lila,” said Michael’s inspiration, Sri Aurobindo, “Lila is a purpose-less purpose, a natural outflow, a spontaneous self-manifestation of the Divine. The concept of lila, again, emphasizes the role of delight in creation.” So… you know, Life is a Festival. In this episode of The Sacred Speaks, John Price speaks with Dr. Rachel Harris about her book, Listening To Ayahuasca, and other related topics. Following her early experience in meditation and body practices at Esalen and with Suzuki Roshi, Dr. Harris formalized her interest in research focusing on the various ways that we may treat human suffering and then she experienced Ayahuasca in the rainforests of Costa Rica. Following her personal experience, she wanted to research “religious experience” as it manifests within the various reports that people provide following their own Ayahuasca journey. She explains the design of her studies and explores aspects of the biology of psychedelics, in particular, a network of the brain called the Default Mode Network, a network of brain structures “quieted” during psychedelic experience and meditation. The DMN is the “generator of our ego” it maintains the constructed world and self. Not only does Dr. Harris speak to the western approach to both the research-based use of psychedelics and the recreational use, but she also speaks to the worldview of indigenous cultures and how this metaphysical view that sees the world as alive has influenced and conflicted with the typical western worldview. While grounding her work in the Ayahuasca, her research reaches far beyond the experiences of Psychonauts and into the minds and homes of each and every one of us who seeks to transform the daily and the mundane. Bio: Psychologist Rachel Harris, Ph.D. is the author of Listening to Ayahuasca: New Hope for Depression, Addiction, PTSD and Anxiety. She was in private practice for thirty-five years working with people interested in psychospiritual development. During a decade working in research, Rachel received a National Institutes of Health New Investigator's Award and published more than forty scientific studies in peer-reviewed journals. She has also consulted to Fortune 500 companies and the United Nations. Rachel was in the 1968 Esalen Residential Program, Big Sur, CA. This intensive six-month program focused on meditation and bodywork. In the early seventies, Rachel studied with Dorothy Nolte in the movement system, Structural Awareness, based on Dr. Ida Rolf's Structural Integration (Rolfing). Rachel also co-edited the Journal of the American Dance Therapy Association for three years. Awareness of how people live and move in their bodies has always been an aspect of Rachel's approach to psychotherapy. During the mid-eighties into the early aughts, Rachel led workshops at Omega Institute, NY and Esalen Institute, CA. She wrote Twenty Minute Retreats: Revive Your Spirit in Just Minutes a Day with Simple, Self-Led Practices (NY: Holt, 2000). This book describes many of the psychological, meditative and body awareness exercises she taught in her workshops. In 2005 Rachel traveled to a retreat center in Costa Rica and serendipitously found herself with the opportunity to drink ayahuasca with Ecuadorian shamans. The morning after her first ceremony, Rachel began asking questions about the therapeutic potential of this medicine. She conducted a three-year research project with Lee Gurel, Ph.D. that resulted in “A Study of Ayahuasca Use in North America,” published in the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs (Summer, 2012). Michael works as a Rolfer and therefore works with the body every day; and, he states, “we are not properly introduced to our bodies in this culture.” He designates most of the hours of each day touching people, and the underlying philosophy may surprise you. This episode reminds us all to attend to the form from which we manifest each moment. Michael's meaning in life is born from attending to people's body, and his personal story will help you understand how he has become so enlightened by his work on the body as a student of the biochemist, Ida Rolf, Ph.D. Growing up on the East Coast, living on the East Side in New York City in the late 60s, and then moving to California in the 60s opened Michael's eyes beyond what he had come to know in his traditional upbringing at all male boarding schools and Yale University, wherein he studied Russian literature. From random nights watching a live performance from Lou Reed in the east side of New York City in the late 60s to random encounters with Ram Dass or Alan Watts, Michael has a deep connection with the epicenter of the explosion of American counterculture and the exploration of human consciousness in the late 60s and 70s in California. For Life on Purpose Episode #71, my guest is psychologist Rachel Harris, PhD, who joined me for an enlightening and hope-filled conversation about her new book Listening to Ayahuasca: New Hope for Depression, Addiction, PTSD and Anxiety (New World Library). Ayahuasca, a psychedelic brew from the Amazon rainforest, is entering the Western lexicon through the popular media, the internet, and first-person reports. Considered a medicine by practitioners, the tea has great therapeutic potential that is just beginning to be studied. As a result of her own personal experience with ayahuasca, Dr. Harris was inspired to research how this medicine was being used in North America in the largest study of this kind to date. Listening to Ayahuasca describes her findings, including miracle cures of depression and addiction, therapeutic breakthroughs, spiritual revelations, and challenging or bad trips. “This book is intended for people considering ayahuasca and for people drinking the medicine. I hope it will help them integrate their insights and visions into their daily lives. There is much work people can do on their own to maximize the healing that ayahuasca offers,” writes Dr. Harris. “I also hope this book will inform psychotherapists about the process of integration after ayahuasca ceremonies, so they can provide a supportive and respectful container for the unfolding of healing.” About: Psychologist Rachel Harris, PhD is the author of Listening to Ayahuasca: New Hope for Depression, Addiction, PTSD and Anxiety. Ever feel that you're holding the weight of the world on your shoulders? Or perhaps just the stress of everyday life? More than 50 years ago a simple, low-load stretch that releases tightness caused in muscles. It's called Myofascial Release Therapy. This is not about working the muscles on your face but rather the tightness of the fascia. Fascia are the fibrous connective tissues enclosing a muscle. Kathy Murillo, an occupational therapist and advanced myofascial release practitioner talks about this form of physical therapy on this edition of Late Night Health. Myofascial release techniques are used to loosen those tight areas on the body that cause pain. Neck, shoulders, arms, lower back and more are areas mostly treated with this form of physical therapy. Practitioners of MRT must be licensed in other healthcare areas such as doctors of chiropractic, massage therapists, sports injury specialists or physical therapists. MRT is often used in combination with other therapies. The goal is to reduce pain from those stiff and tight areas where movement may be restricted. MRT enhances and increases the effectiveness of the other therapies. The exact phrase "myofascial release" was coined in the 1960s by Robert Ward, an osteopath who studied with Ida Rolf, the originator of Rolfing. Ward, along with physical therapist John Barnes, are considered the two primary founders of Myofascial Release.[5] [6] Some practitioners use the term "myofascial release therapy" or "myofascial trigger point therapy" referring to the treatment of trigger points. The phrase has also been loosely used for different manual therapy techniques, including soft tissue manipulation work such as connective tissue massage, soft tissue mobilization, foam rolling, and strain-counterstrain techniques. Myofascial techniques can be described as passive (patient stays completely relaxed) or active (patient provides resistance as necessary), with direct and indirect techniques used in each.

John Chitty lays out a 5-step sequence for working with babies. John's website: www.energyschool.com Episode highlights: There is a strong tradition and justification for therapy sessions with newborn babies. A main inspiration is Robert Fulford, D.O. Books: Dr. Fulford's Touch of Life: The Healing Power of the Natural Life Force – Robert Fulford, D.O. - Gallery Books Are We on the Path? The Collected Works of Robert Fulford, D.O. – Robert Fulford – Cranial Press Mentioned by Andrew Weil in Spontaneous Healing – Random House Fulford had good results with many common problems faced by babies. Baby's problems affect the whole family. Fulford championed cranial base work and ANS health as useful areas for helping babies resolve echoes of the birthing experience. Babies have significant ability to resolve issues when given some support. Fulford helped us see what effective support looks like. John has been teaching a class about working with babies annually for the last 8 years. The ideas he will lay out today are a summary of what he has incorporated into this class. He likes Franklyn Sills' Foundations in Craniosacral Biodynamics, Vol. II. It has several chapters devoted to babies. It is not exactly what John Does, but he likes it overall. Other Books: Craniosacral Therapy for Babies and Small Children - Ettiene Piersman  North Atlantic Books Pediatric Manual Medicine: An Osteopathic Approach - Jane Carreiro  Churchill Livingstone Craniosacral Therapy for Children -  Daniel Agustoni  North Atlantic Books   Ray Castellino – Santa Barbara - clinic pioneered recognition and conversation skills. www.castellinotraining.com   Carrie Conti PhD www.carriecontey.com   APPPAH – Association for Prenatal and Perinatal Psychology and Health www.birthpsychology.com   Dave Paxson www.facebook.com/davepaxson   John is working on a book right now about working with babies. Release date TBA. Many people feel daunted by working with babies, but a little goes a long way and it is better to go ahead and start. There are babies right now who could use your help! Changes made now have a lot of leverage in the life of the child and happiness of the family system. Armed with only a few steps and some basic knowledge, you can be of significant help. Try it out. John's 5 step sequence for working with babies: Can be useful for many different issues and employed at varying depths.   1) Recognition – we suffer as a culture from over-scientification of ourselves. This misses the reality of the baby's identity as a newly arriving soul into our realm. This can be approached in a secular manner, with only an acknowledgement that there is an invisible world out there that is not understood by science. Religion or mysticism is not required to work with John's ideas, just an acknowledgement that the therapist be comfortable with the idea that we cannot measure all of reality, as much of it is invisible. We need to recognize the Baby. A formula for recognition: I know who you are I know where you came from.   I know why you are here.   Look baby in the eye with appropriate proximity he/she would have with mom's eyes (12 inches or so) . and recognize: I know who you are - a unit of consciousness from another sphere I know where you came from - the invisible world I know why you are here - to encounter the resistance of matter for the fulfillment of consciousness. Recognition alone may bring about positive changes.  2) Tidal Movement From Craniosacral Biodynamics - simply palpating the Tide seems to stabilize the system, and recognize baby on another level of embodiment. It can be done anywhere on the body. May have one hand on baby, one hand on mom. Babies may have inhibition of the downward phase (exhalation). Our culture contributes to this. We need to be more conscious of caring for the autonomic nervous systems of babies. They are mostly oriented to the social nervous system, and have limited defaulting to sympathetic arousal modes. If that fails, they go into parasympathetic shock and enter a shut down, numbed out, spaced out. We call these babies “good babies” (!) Helping mom is a high order priority for working with babies. Helping her relationship with her husband can be beneficial to the family system, and baby can slide into a healthier ANS state embodied by the parents. 3) Cranial Base disengagement. Address the strain in the system introduced by natural processes or unnatural interventions. All of the different factors seem to settle in the cranial base (occiput/sphenoid/temporal).  Vagus nerve passes through the Jugular foramen in the cranial base. This is a good place to start. A basic way to work with this is light contact on the occiput behind the ears. It does not need to be precise. Hold an intention of space for the system as an inherent emerging principle. Try to establish better range of motion in the cranial base. This often helps with nursing. 4) Birth Story This does not need to be told “over” the baby. Work with the baby to review the way birth was supposed to be in order to help the body resolve urges for fulfillment. John will give more examples in the book. Too often in therapy the emphasis is on fixing what was bad. We should emphasize resources first. Revisiting stages of birth is done with intention and physical contact. Some resistance followed by release, at feet, shoulders, head, finding way to optimum. It is always good to conclude with baby moving to mom. 5) Polarity Two-Chair Method Developed by Robert Hall M.D., student of Fritz Perls, Randolph Stone, and Ida Rolf. John holds the baby and lets mom have a conversation with the baby. John does Body Low Slow Loop with mom (a practice from Chapter 9 of John's book Dancing with Yin and Yang and presented in the next Craniosacral Podcast Episode) to settle mom and then imagine the baby is in the empty chair. Mom is asked to speak to the baby, and even ask questions. Revelation often emerges. Mom is asked to be the baby and even more insight arises. Mom accesses her intuitive information. Issues of the estranged father, if important, can also be addressed. Dad is often left hanging when baby arrives. It is good for the baby if mom and dad can work some of that out (chapter 11 of Dancing with Yin and Yang.) This is a low-pressure form of therapy, much of the above approach can be done non-verbally. Follow baby's gestures. They have meaning! Our whole healthcare system would benefit greatly from spending more time understanding the state of consciousness of babies and really bringing that understanding into clinical work. The medicalization and scientification of birth overlooks some very important factors. At least we could administer some of our interventions with a higher degree of sensitivity to the baby's needs. Our insensitivity can contribute to many problems later in life for individuals. John likes William Emerson's work, but is not a fan of cathartic methods when working with babies. The baby is not excessively activated during the interaction in his sequence. Looping and pendulation (Peter Levine) is a more skillful way of working. We are always looking for signs of the social nervous system coming back on line.   Stephen Porges - triune nervous system www.stephenporges.com   www.craniosacralpodcast.com

“There are not as many people, at least I don’t meet as many people that understand the concept of work. And I don’t mean loading bales of hay or physical work. But, the understanding that you are going to have to have your hand on that plow for years, a decade, two decades, and during that time you are going to come across the most fatiguing delays, the most mortifying disappointments, and the presumptuous judgement of the ignorant on what you are trying to do. You are going to face those things and you have to keep your hand on the plow and go.” * In this episode, Tom Myers, founder of Anatomy Trains and Kinesis Myofascial Integration, discusses how he was first introduced to the power of movement in his undergraduate studies of theater at Harvard University. Tom recounts his exploration of different movement and spiritual groups in his nation-wide travels as a young adult. He explains his introduction to the structural integration work of Ida Rolf that eventually lead him to develop Anatomy Trains. Tom describes the journey of solidifying both Anatomy Trains and Kinesis Myofascial Integration and his experience teaching these modalities. Lastly, he offers insight on developing body intelligence in an increasingly industrialized world.
