Physical activity in later life is often promoted for its potential physical, psychological, and social benefits for older adults. However, sometimes these programs, despite good intentions, can perpetuate negative stereotypes about aging and youthful ideas about a good life. Have we forgotten to ask old people themselves how and why they are (not) active? As our guest explains, aging is not only a physical and psychological phenomenon but also a cultural phenomenon. Cultural narratives including ageing-as-decline, successful ageing and active ageing can have significant consequences on how we make meaning of later life. In this episode, we ask critical questions about what is ageing, who is an older person, and what implications different physical activity campaigns for older adults might have. Dr Adam Evans is currently an Associate Professor in Sociology of Sport at the Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sport (NEXS) at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. He is the current director of the Sport, Health and Innovation research group at NEXS, and is Editor in Chief of the European Journal for Sport and Society (www.tandfonline.com/toc/ress20/current). His research interests cohere around understanding the lived experiences of sport, physical activity amongst several groups, including older adults and those with specific health needs, together with work in swimming and aquatic activity.

Adam Evans gives a different perspective on dealing with bad customers from his experiencePublished by Marcus HartOn the Transform U Live Show, Marcus Hart had the privilege to interview Adam Evans, now entrepreneur and author, born and raised in Fort Myers, Florida. He attended the University of Alabama before returning to Florida and attending Weber University. His early entrepreneurial spirit allowed him to create a music magazine from scratch and a breakfast café before finishing college. Adam has owned bars in Ybor City or been employed in the hospitality industry as an experienced general manager for 20 years. He has a history of unique staff training techniques to replicate when in sales formulas for all staff members. Adam owns the Bar Almighty LLC, a bar restaurant and nightclub staffing training and consulting agency. He uses unparalleled access to over 25,000 quality hospitality employees across Florida to provide staff for events.Adam started a writing career with his first book, "Why the Customer is Not Always Right." This book takes a different perspective on dealing with customers from the experience of more than 20 years in the hospitality industry. What's more intriguing is that immediately in this interview, he goes off to explore some of the crucial parts of the book summarizing that it is dead wrong for any manager, restaurant, or bar owner-operator to subject their staff to any customer that is rude, obnoxious or blatantly not going to be the type of customer that's going to tip anyways.Book by Adam EvansIronically, the saying we hear the most is that "the customer is always right." The corporate heads expect their operators to follow this method of serving customers. Adam has made it his mission to help owners and managers get back to focusing on the operational side of business versus pleasing customers. Likewise, this can help increase revenue and profits. If we recall, we have witnessed many restaurants and bars forced to brainstorm innovative ways of staying afloat during the pandemic. Many restaurants and bars rely heavily on innovative alternatives for their customers through full-service driving-delivery apps like Doordash, Uber, EatStreet, and many others. "Most people don't understand the expenses of operating a restaurant," explains Adam Evans. "Most people don't understand that a rent payment for one location can be over $10,000 a month or that the light bill alone can be anywhere between 2500 to $4,000 a month, and let's not mention that the payroll gets up in the amounts of $45,000 per month and that's just one location. That's a lot of drinks you got to sell and a lot of burgers to make that money back long before you make a profit." Evans further explains. If you have customers that are complaining about food over and over and over again, you're screwed. Many owners work harder to even get to that break-even mark. Small restaurants are fighting tooth and nail every month to survive. General managers operating for large corporations face pressure to hit monthly quotas. Just imagine so many of these different restaurants facing similar issues but still operating on outdated methods to deal with customers even though the customers themselves have changed over the years decades. To hear the full interview, check it out on YouTube or any podcast app. You can learn more about Adam Evans, his company, and his book by visiting https://www.linkedin.com/in/adampevans/.
Cyber threats have been around as long as the Internet, but attacks have ramped up in the last few years, with the pandemic dramatically shifting more of our work—and our lives—online. Organizations also moved more of their operations to the cloud, creating a new potential liability. Recent high-profile security breaches have crippled some of Canada's largest companies such as Empire Foods, Indigo, and Maple Leaf Foods, with costly impacts to the tune of tens of millions of dollars. Organized crime and some nation states are getting better and better at breaching existing security. It's up to Canada to leverage our talent, technology, and knowledge to turn those cybersecurity challenges into opportunities. On this episode of Disruptors, an RBC Podcast, host John Stackhouse takes a deep dive into what is being done to fight cybercrime. Guests include Adam Evans, RBC's Senior Vice-President & Chief Information Security Officer Michelle Zatlyn, the founder, President, and COO of Cloudflare, and David Shipley, founder & CEO of Beauceron Security. What are the biggest risks to your data and what's being done to keep it safe? Listen in to find out. For more information about Cloudflare, check out their website. Click here to read about Beauceron Security. More information about RBC's cybersecurity initiative can be found here.

After a week of thinking about cooking turkey and a day of eating it, you might want to consider something else, so come with me to the Gulf of Mexico, where the sand is white and the seafood is plenty. This is the source of inspiration and menu items for Adam Evans, chef and co-owner, along with his wife Suzanne, of Automatic Seafood & Oysters in Birmingham, AL. Housed in a former mid-century warehouse, a table here has been one of the hottest in town since the restaurant opened in 2019. Adam started his career in Fairhope at The Grand Hotel, spent time cooking in some of the best kitchens in New Orleans, has worked as the executive chef of private events for Tom Colicchio's team at Craft in NYC, and was the opening chef of The Optimist in Atlanta for Ford Fry in 2012. Automatic Seafood & Oysters was a James Beard Foundation finalist for Best New Restaurant in 2020, and here he brings his passion for seafood back to his home state of Alabama.
We begin with the latest from the COP26 Climate Conference in Europe. We catch up with Simon Dyer from the ‘Pembina Institute' who's attending the sessions in Scotland this week. We ask Simon about the Pembina Institute's involvement at the Conference and what impact, realistically, Canada can make against climate change globally. When we talk about the issue of ‘cybercrime.' It's generally large corporations, government institutions and banks that are the ‘targets' of online criminals....BUT that trend is changing. We speak with Adam Evans, Chief Information Security Officer with RBC, who explains why cybercriminals are now focusing their attention on small and medium sized Canadian businesses. We've all heard the term “SAD” or Seasonal Affective Disorder but how much do you know about it and could you be suffering from “SAD” and not even know it? We discuss with Dr. Ted Jablonski, our “on-call family physician”. Finally, with Remembrance Day just a few short days away, we focus on the resources available to the Veterans in our city including Calgary's “Veteran's Food Bank”. We speak with the Food Bank's “Operation Manager” Charles Redeker about the demand this year, and the unique challenges faced by Veterans who are having trouble making ends meet. Breaking Bread with AMSE Welcome to the first-ever Thanksgiving episode! Moni and Flossie wanted this episode to feel like a gathering place for friends and like-minded people, so the AMSE team members joined in! But we wouldn’t be AMSE without you, so pull your chair up to the table and join in on the discussion. What are some of your favorite family traditions & recipes? Rachel Carpenter, Copy Editor, has a super-secret stuffing recipe that she won’t share with anyone, but she will make and share that with you! And when she’s near her mother and family, they get together the night before Thanksgiving and prepare the turkey together. Military life being what it is, she doesn’t always get to be with her family. But she is grateful for technology because it enables her to be a part of the tradition she loves. Selena Conmackie, Ft. Hood Chapter Leader, is from Hawaii, and for her, pumpkin crunch (also called pumpkin dump cake) is her must-have Thanksgiving tradition. But the funny part about this tradition is every year she asks her friend for the recipe. Just asking her friend for the recipe has become a part of the tradition around the yummy dessert! Here is the recipe if you would like to try it: Pumpkin Crunch Recipe. Kat Calvo, Partnerships Manager, is all about the pumpkin crunch, too! And traditionally, her family also makes it. Around noon, she usually starts drinking Coquito. Plus, she wraps and stuffs her turkey with bacon. That’s right, bacon. She said it’s her husband’s favorite way to eat it: Bacon-Wrapped Turkey. Adam Evans, Luke AFB Chapter Leader, always hosts a Friendsgiving at their house the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. They have a game they play called Play it Forward. The day of, they all arise very early to begin the game. The game requires a deck of cards, with each card having a specific task: take a selfie with a stranger, complete this riddle, overtip your server, and so on. The tasks are straightforward, and part of the idea is to go to every local business throughout the city. Once the task is completed, the player logs in their deck of cards with the number on the bottom of the deck into an app to keep track of the card. Next, the player leaves the card they have completed with that person they met, and that person can enter the card’s number into the game. They’ve been playing this game for the past six years. Some of the cards have traveled 1.2 million miles! Here is the game: Sneaky Cards Game. Christinna Kitchaiya, Social Media Strategist, says that she used to be traditional in her meal. But her husband is from Thailand, and now that they have traveled the world, their dinner consists of all sorts of flavors from around the globe! Plus, they like to invite people who don’t have a family to share the holiday with their home. Moni Jefferson, Co-founder, and CEO used to have a very traditional meal and still does, but now she likes to order out. However, she does make traditional Puerto Rican rice called Arroz con Gandules (rice with pigeon peas). Her family used to get dressed up for Thanksgiving, but now they wear Christmas PJs all day and watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Anna Larson, Ft. Hood Chapter Leader, has a huge extended family. We’re talking sixty 1st cousins, and they always got together for Thanksgiving. Her uncle was a gym teacher at a high school. When she was younger, the entire family would meet at the gym and use the commercial kitchen to prepare the meal. And for some reason, because she’s not sure how or why it started, there would be homemade pinatas for the children and the teens. The ones for the teens were always harder to get open. But by the end of the day, there would be piles of candy everywhere! The pinata tradition has stayed with her. Flossie Hall, Co-founder, and COO grew up in a very small town with very traditional foods. It wasn’t until she became a military spouse and was introduced to all the diversity within the Thanksgiving holiday that she realized all the good food she could add to her meal! She still serves traditional dishes but enjoys other dishes as well. As the neighborhood cook, she enjoys inviting others over, especially soldiers with no one to share the holiday with, to share with her family of 6 for the holiday. Caroline Schafer, the podcast editor, grew up with the regular traditional foods and loves to make and serve them. But having a son with Celiac’s disease means she has learned to tweak as many recipes as she can. Plus, even though it’s not Christmas, she likes to eat on her Spode Christmas china because it reminds her of her Mimi, who is no longer with her, and Spode was the china she used for the holidays. Each team member took some time to answer some This or That questions. We’d love to hear what you have to say! Sweet potatoes and yams - which is your favorite? Or are you like the AMSE team, and you aren’t sure of the difference? Canned cranberry or fresh cranberry sauce? Stuffing or dressing? Fun fact (because we found out some of the team didn’t know this): stuffing is what you stuff a turkey with, and dressing is served in a dish on the side. Cook or take-out? Everyone cooks. Mostly. Paper plates or China? Pecan or pumpkin pie? Of course, a Thanksgiving podcast wouldn’t be the same if each of us didn’t share what we’re grateful for this year. Even with all that 2020 has brought us, each of us shares our unique and heartfelt gratitude. Of course, one of those things we are all grateful for is you! If you’re new to Owning Up, make sure and subscribe, so you’ll know when a new episode drops. Hello listeners! I’m Caroline Schafer, the Podcast Producer for AMSE. We are just past the halfway mark with Season 2, and what an incredibly informative season we’ve had so far! Episode one started us off celebrating the momentous publication Military Spouse Entrepreneur Guide in partnership with Stars and Stripes! You can read the digital guide online and check your local military base for a copy of the paper publication, or you can request a guide by email. Episode two is all about the highs and lows of being an entrepreneur. Moni and Flossie shared their coping mechanisms for the lows, plus other helpful insights regarding sharing on outlets such as social media and such. Plus, entrepreneur Chavah Grant shares how she realized her gifts and turned them into her own successful business - Vida Chic Weddings. Episode three shares how to keep the naysayers at bay and why it’s important who you talk to about your dream to be an entrepreneur. Military spouse Adam Evans, an entrepreneur trailblazer, loves his current venture with Instant Handz. Adam shares that his “why” isn’t about money; it’s about community. Episode four explains why doing business the AMSE worked so well for Flossie and Moni that they created the AMSE platform for military spouse entrepreneurs to have a place to learn, grow, and launch their business. Military Spouse Entrepreneur highlight for this episode is Eloise Drain. In 2008 when Eloise set out to start a business, Family Inceptions, to assist families having fertility issues, she also experienced a lack of guidance when starting her business. Hear how, in the past year, Eloise found the resources and community of support she needs within AMSE. We are in a time where remote work is more popular than ever! And episode five shares why this is nothing new for the military spouse. This episode also offers some great information from Laura Early, Deputy Director of Wise Advise and Assist Team. Laura talks about how and why she and her business partner, Diana Jaquith, started their business. Want to start a business but don’t know where to start? Episode six is definitely for you! Moni and Flossie share nuggets of information about how to start a business from the ground up! And for extra encouragement, Monica Fullerton, creator of Spouse-ly, talks about her journey of starting her business less than a year ago and what she’s done to pivot and grow her business. Season 2 Episode 3: Adam Evans Welcome to Episode 3 of Season 2 of Owning Up! This week, AMSE founders Moni Jefferson and Flossie Hall share how to keep the naysayers at bay and why it’s important who you talk to about your dream to be an entrepreneur. Whether you’re a new entrepreneur or someone who’s been rocking your best entrepreneur life, you may have had to deal with those who don’t support the direction you’re going. No worries, though, Moni and Flossie have been there, dealt with that. In this episode, they talk about where validation comes from, plus how to know who to trust with your dream, and what you need to consider when sharing your ideas with other people to protect yourself legally. Plus, you’ll hear their excitement about Adam Evans, this week’s entrepreneur trailblazer. Here are some other things you’ll hear on the podcast: Always read through contracts. You are your most prominent advocate. You won’t always have someone there to be your cheerleader. Find what affirmations you need for yourself when you’re stuck in a rut. As a military spouse entrepreneur, if you don’t have thick skin already, you’ll need to develop it. Find mentors and advisors you can trust. It’s okay to set boundaries with naysayers or those that don’t understand that you don’t have to have a 9 - 5. It’s your dream, your passion, not theirs. Check yourself - don’t be a naysayer or a discourager to others. Adam Evans is no stranger to being an entrepreneur, but his love for his current venture - Instant Hands, is full of all the things that are important to him. His “why” isn’t about money; it’s about community. Visit Adam’s website here: https://www.instanthandz.com/ If you’re new to Owning Up, make sure and subscribe, so you’ll know when a new episode drops. You can also join the Facebook group to see what other milspouse entrepreneurs are up to and receive the latest AMSE news. We’d love to have you join our fantastic community! Physical activity in later life is often promoted for its potential physical, psychological and social benefits for older adults. However, sometimes these programmes, despite good intentions, can perpetuate negative stereotypes about ageing and youthful ideas about good life. Have we forgot to ask old people themselves how and why they are (not) active? As our guest explains, ageing is not only a physical and psychological phenomenon, but also a cultural phenomenon. Cultural narratives including ageing-as-decline, successful ageing and active ageing can have significant consequences on how we make meaning of later life.In this episode, we ask critical questions about what is ageing, who is an older person, and what implications different physical activity campaigns for older adults might have.Dr Adam Evans is currently an Associate Professor in Sociology of Sport at the Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sport (NEXS) at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark.
Dr. Sammy Allen, 82, of Resaca, GA died Sunday, August 2, 2020, at Advent Health Gordon. Rev. Allen was born, October 4, 1937, as Robert Verland Allen, son of the late Vince W. and Myrtle McKinley Timms Allen. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson; Vince Allen, and by two sisters; Nettie Allen Baker and Johnnie Ruth Allen Dean. After several months of deep Holy Ghost conviction, he was saved by the grace of God in the summer of 1955. Immediately upon his conversion, he began to witness to others about their need of salvation. This burden became so heavy that he began to speak as a lay preacher in Sunday School classes, cottage prayer meetings, and even in church services every time he was given an opportunity. Bro. Allen announced his calling to preach in 1961. He soon was called to be the pastor of Maple Grove Baptist Church and New Prospect Baptist Church. These were half time churches. In October 1961, Bro. Allen was used of the Lord to organize the Concord Baptist Mission into Concord Baptist Church, and was the only pastor for 59 years. Immediately after he announced his calling into the ministry, God began to open doors for the young fiery preacher to preach revival meetings. This evangelistic ministry grew so fast that by 1964 the young preacher had to leave his job in the carpet mill and go full-time in evangelism. He continued to preach meetings week after week across the country in both small and large churches. In the late 1960s, God began to lay a burden on Bro. Allen’s heart for a Camp Meeting in the area where he lived. After much prayer and waiting upon the Lord, Faith Baptist Camp was born with the first Camp Meeting held under a large tent on the grounds in June 1970. Faith Baptist Camp has been very blessed of the Lord and has been used to be a blessing to so many people and churches across America. As an older man, Dr. Allen is held in high respect by all the Fundamental Baptists all across the country that knows him. He is known as an Evangelist, a Revivalist, a Camp Meeting Preacher, a Pastor, and a Preacher’s Friend by those who know him and love Old Fashion Christianity. He now holds two Honorary Doctorate Degrees. Every student of Faith Baptist Institute will be affected by the leadership of this dynamic man of God. Dr. Allen was married on December 28, 1962, to Jimmie Lou Wilson. She has stood by his side as a faithful, loving, God-fearing wife in every task he has attempted. God has blessed their home with two sons; Samuel (Sabrina) Allen of Resaca, and David (Gwen) Allen of Calhoun; daughter; Hannah Allen of Resaca, grandchildren; Samuel and Alexis Allen of Flowery Branch, Elisabeth Allen of Dalton, Nathanael Allen of Calhoun, Hagen Allen of Resaca and Brianna Allen of Resaca, Great-grandchildren; Caroline Allen of Dalton and Gibson Allen of Flowery Branch, GA. A host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives also survive. The funeral service for Dr. Sammy Allen will be conducted on Friday, August 7, 2020, at 2:00 p.m. from Concord Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Bro. Randy Sutherland will officiate along with Bro. Tony Hudson, Bro. Marion Atkinson, Bro. Denver Boling, Bro. Ronnie Simpson, Bro. Marvin Carr, and Bro. Joe Arthur. Pallbearers will be his nephews, Alan Sosebee, Ken Johnson, Steve Johnson, Nick Johnson, Joey Baker, Scotty Bryant, Ricky Bryant, Brandon Reeves, Doug Wilson, and Mike Andrews; honorary pallbearers are Jim Fox, Bobby Thomas, Mike Bell, Mike Lane, Rev. Charles Henderson, Tyrone Wilson, Donnie Rigdon, Rev. Steve Powers, Rev. David Cash, Stan Ritter, Ronnie Russ, William Nix, Rev. Billy Wilson, Rev. Travis Clayton, Robert Croft, Jamie Trammell, Adam Evans, Brandon Ensley, and Silas Foster. The family will receive friends at Concord Baptist Church on Thursday, August 6, 2020, between the hours of 4:00 PM and 10:00 PM https://www.tributearchive.com/obituaries/17725223/Dr-Sammy-Allen Dr. Allen preached this message, on Thursday morning, June 12, 2003, at the Pleasant View Baptist Church of Taylors, SC's Camp Meeting.

This week I’m joined by Rob Adam Evans to discuss the scoreless draw that took place at St. Mary’s against relegation rivals Stoke City on Saturday. Despite the storm that blew in and brought snow to much of England in the days leading up to the match, volunteers and the staff at Saints gave it their all to make sure fans could get safely to and from the stadium. Rob and I didn’t talk all that much about the snow or the walkways, but we did look at the match and discuss the few positives that were there, the impact it had on our standing in the table, and what we need to do going forward in order to remain in the Premier League. Rob was fantastic to chat with, and I hope you enjoy the hour or so of our two hour conversation about the team and life in general that made it into the podcast. On the latest episode of “Hot off the Press,” Chef Pete talks with Fisher’s Executive Chef Bill Briand, fresh off his nomination for the coveted James Beard Award. With 16 years of experience in the food industry, Briand is the first chef in Baldwin County, Ala., to be nominated for this prestigious award. Briand began his career in New Orleans working alongside celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse, who also happened to be the first guest to dine at Fisher’s the night before its Memorial Day Weekend opening in 2014. Briand went on to work with acclaimed New Orleans chef Donald Link at Herbsaint, Cochon and Butcher. Chef Briand and the Fisher’s team prioritize the integrity and quality of the ingredients in the dishes they prepare, depending on the local farmers and fishermen to provide them with the freshest produce and seafood each season. Their goal is to not only serve delicious food, but to elevate the dining experience by sharing the story behind it. In an effort to offer both locals and tourists a unique dining experience like no other on the Gulf Coast, Fisher’s is hosting the Southern Grace Dinner series featuring award-winning and celebrity chefs from across the South. For the third consecutive year, Chef Briand will open up his kitchen to spotlight the top-notch talent and cuisine of acclaimed chefs from across the region, as well as to showcase the rich and diverse bounty of the Gulf Coast. These exclusive dinners will allow guests the opportunity to mix and mingle with their favorite chefs at a cocktail reception, followed by a communal-seated dinner in Fisher’s laid back and relaxed signature style. Co-sponsored by Gulf Shores Orange Beach Tourism and Alabama Gulf Seafood, a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Southern Foodways Alliance. The Southern Grace Dinner series kicks off May 12th with featured chef Nina Compton, owner and chef at Compere Lapin and runner up on Bravo’s “Top Chef” Season 11. This summer’s stellar culinary lineup also includes guest chefs Alon Shaya, Isaac Toups, Frank Stitt, Ryan Prewitt, Adam Evans, Justin Devillier and Bill Smith. If you haven't heard of the Hillbilly Weatherman by now after the winter we just endured, then you either live in a cave (not a bad thing) or you live in an area that didn't see a flake of snow. Many northerners would kill for either scenario. Adam Evans is the Hillbilly Weatherman and he tells the weathercast like most probably think it. And, turns out, Adam is a really really good deer hunter. So much so that when we pitched him the idea of being a guest he said, "I LIVE FOR DEER HUNTING". Our kind of crowd... Adam tells us all about his viral internet journey that he's been on over a few short months, amassing more Facebook followers in a week than most business pages will collect in a lifetime. Adam shares a few deer hunting stories, gives us a weather forecast, and a deer hunting forecast for 2015. The Hillbilly weatherman is authentic, brutally downeast honest, and above all, a really good person, even though he swears a little bit.
