The Spring of '89 – Borrowed Keg & Sorority Shenanigans In this episode of 420 Reasons Why I Quit Drinking Alcohol, I take you back to the spring of 1989—my junior year at MSU, living in the Alpha Phi sorority house as the house manager. It was peak party season, and when a planned celebration on our sorority sundeck didn't materialize, my friend and I took matters into our own hands—by “borrowing” a keg from our favorite fraternity. What happened next? Well, you'll have to tune in to find out.

THE RUMORS ARE TRUE. I, Princess of Taboo, professional rule breaker, and champion of individualism, am a former member of Alpha Phi: the hottest, blondest, whitest sorority on my California college campus. Even more shocking? I absolutely loved it.That is, until I got kicked out. For my first solo episode, I take you through the highs and lows of my 2.5 years in Greek Life as the only New Yorker in a microcosm of "Trump's America." From rushing (in club clothes) and skyrocketing to the top of the social ladder overnight to crashing down in a school-wide scandal that ultimately got me terminated, it was never simple. And neither were - are - the ethics. My sorority showed me female love and loyalty that I never thought possible, but within a system that's classist, discriminatory, and exclusionary. In "finding a home," I lost myself, and became a part of a much larger societal problem.TALES OF TABOO MERCH NOW AVAILABLE AT ALIWEISSWORLD.COM/MERCH!Follow Ali on Instagram, Twitter, & TikTok @aliweissworld. Louis Avallone and Stephen Parr discuss the very serious problem of so many communities having to deal with murders night after night. Solutions are much more than just “jobs”. It is going to require citizens, religious leaders, and elect officials coming together 1.) to re-establish a community spirit which has been lost, 2.) to have the many moral leaders (including religious leaders) speak out and provide leadership and guidance, and 3.) to generally develop a better sense of hope and of support throughout the neighborhoods. The purpose — the only purpose — of government is to protect the individual American Rights to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. Thus, continuing to elect people to office who do not believe in either a Creator nor that government is supposed to be limited in its scope, those Rights are not going to be protected. Louis Avallone and Stephen Parr have a discussion about what is required of us to obtain proper personal guidance from the Creator on how to go forward. There was a time when sororities were very pleased to have their members involved in campus politics, and this included Alpha Phi. Apparently, today, belonging to a sorority and having your own opinions is not acceptable any more…..at least not if you are an Alpha Phi at LSU. Our American Mamas, Teri Netterville and Denise Arthur, share the story of Emily Hines who was thrown out of the sorority for dancing to the Bee Gees’ “More Than a Woman” in a TicTok video because it was viewed as being disrespectful of Biden’s transgender health secretary, Dr Rachel Levine. Between 1936 and 1938, Joseph Stalin (USSR) had several million arrested for being “Enemies of the People” as part of his “Great Purge” of anyone who he deemed to be a threat to his Communist leadership. Their “right to trial” became “show trails” because Stalin banned their right to have a defense…..all to generate terror throughout the population. It is estimated more than half were executed. Well, Pelosi is starting her own version of a “show trial”. She is setting up a commission to investigate what is being called the “Capitol Insurrection” on January 6. They plan to “haul in” Trump Supporters to go after; but will they show the video of the Capitol Police opening the doors to let the people go in to begin with? It is going to be a Circus through 2022!The cyber attack on the Colonial Pipeline system was unquestionably an international criminal attack; but was it also a terrorist act? Is “Dark Side” an international terrorist organization operating out of Russia? Did you know its software can be “rented” to use against one’s competition? What is going to be done about “Dark Side” by the USA? We need to have a very strong response, or we are going to have even bigger problems in the future from a reorganized “Dark Side” by a different name.So Prince Harry splits from his Royal Family, moves to the United States — which also split from his Royal ancestor, King George III, almost 250 years ago, and then proceeds to call America’s Right of Free Speech “Bonkers”! Interestingly, Piers Morgan, also British, definitely does appreciate the 1st Amendment! He thinks it is perhaps “the most important words in the entire Constitution”. Morgan goes on to say “It takes an extraordinary amount of entitled arrogance to mock the most revered building block of your adopted country's history.” Perhaps Harry ought to do a deep, comprehensive study of the American Revolution and the history of our Founding Documents before he discovers exactly what King George III learned about Americans the hard way.

On a summer evening on June 11, 2001, EIU student and member of the Zeta Alpha chapter of Alpha Phi ,Shannon McNamara, enjoyed hanging out with friends for a few drinks. After everyone left and she was sleeping, a stranger entered her apartment and killed her in a brutal manner. Murder was rare in this community, yet the year prior another woman was murdered. Amy Warner was murdered in her home where her two children were present. Shannon fought the murderer and his organized method of approaching violence became disorganized when he was surprised and found himself being attacked in return. He made mistakes that would uncover this merging serial killer and stop him in his path . While there was not enough evidence for Amy, yet, Shannon's murder had exposed him and a long history of violent sexual assaults, battery, trespassing, and other traits of a budding serial killer. There was also pornography of women, children, and even animals on his computer. He was brazen and hid in plain sight and watched chaos erupt from his apartment while people searched for a malicious killer in the college town. The defense attempted to pull on the heartstrings of the public and jury by telling about his childhood of abuse and neglect. A drug given to the military to prevent malaria, Larium, was also questioned due to a discovery that military personnel who killed others and themselves seemed to be impacted by this drug. They also tried to use his alcoholism and black outs to explain his actions. At the end of the day he was found to be culpable of these horrific crimes. He was purely evil. These murders brought two inspiring families who supported one another to accomplish putting the killer, Anthony Mertz, away so he could not continue his rampage of assaulting young women.

(https://www.theh2duo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/1074-x-366-podcast-template-7.png) Erin Ruszkowski is a sophomore at the University of Alabama studying environmental engineering and policy and Spanish. Beginning in 7th grade she attended summer programs through Duke University TIP (talent identification program) program which helps gifted students discover their abilities, explore new academic challenges, and celebrate their accomplishments. Erin is a self proclaimed water nerd and has loved water since she was seven years old when she began asking her aerospace engineering parents questions about water and the environment. Erin is a presidential and engineering leadership scholar and also a member of the Alpha Phi sorority at the University of Alabama. Top Takeaways: As obvious as it seems that the millennial generation relies on social media, they understand better than most that it’s a place to connect socially, not the best way to get accurate information. Turns out they prefer to find reputable sources on Google. Erin talks about her Water Nerd’s Guide to Millennials internship project. She focuses on how we can market and connect to them and why advocacy is an appealing option in their generation. She drives home the message of using social justice and social action to bring people into the water industry, especially of her passion-driven generation. Neil Payne's short film Alpa Phi showed at Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2016.  He let me know that he had a lot to get off his chest about filmmaking, about what it's like to make films that challenge people, and about the challenges of life after film school. "Alpha Phi" Short from Neil Payne on Vimeo. When I approached Neil about doing the Discover Film podcast, he asked me to look at a commercial spec spot that he shot.  I found it so bold and direct, that I decided to make this one of the rare times that a filmmaker gets more than one piece of work embedded with their podcast.  (It doesn't hurt that it's 30 seconds.) Host Chris Vognar calls in from the Venice Film Festival and Dallas independent filmmaker Jason Reimer takes his spot in the studio. We consider the continued fallout from that promotional video for Alpha Phi at the University of Alabama. (You know, the one with the blond sorority sisters laughing, blowing glitter from their hands and prancing in bikinis.) Turns out, it was shot by a 20-year-old Coppell High School grad who is now dealing with the aftermath of viral fame. Next, “Wanna see some shapes?” Shapes is the title of the zine by Dallas artist Randy Guthmiller, who has built a mini zine publishing empire for local artists. Guthmiller talks about what it all means in advance of the inaugural Dallas Zine Party. Finally, we point our microphones back at guest-host Jason Reimer for a lightening round of topics. He’ll tell us about the book he just optioned for a TV series about the Chitlin' Circuit, we’ll discuss reports that his crew may (or may not) be negotiating to take over the historic Lakewood Theater, and we’ll get an update on Dallas actor Harry Goaz’s return to David Lynch’s strange world of Twin Peaks, courtesy of Showtime.
